Like our cover says, “Happiness Is Homemade.” We know that more this year than ever before, even as we begin to emerge and shake off the dregs of 2020. If we’ve been given anything over the past year, it’s that we can finally value and appreciate both our time at home and our time away from it. In this issue, you will find tips and tricks for gardening at home, an innovative Airstream© renovation and a tour of a newly-redesigned kitchen. There’s advice for how to upgrade your home’s furniture and style, as well as an overview of the residential and commercial real estate markets in Collierville.

You will also discover a new, recurring section dedicated to Main and Mulberry, a multimedia company based in Collierville that specializes in podcasts and video series. Here, we encourage you to scan the QR codes provided to hear full episodes of podcasts featuring local entrepreneurs, Collierville aldermen, up-and-coming musicians and more. Kneading the Dough Main and Mulberry: Grindstone is a series that features small businesses and their owners’ daily efforts. In an early episode, we spoke to David Pippin, owner of 3 Guys Pizza Pies.

David Pippin 3 GUYS PIZZA PIES

P

ippin worked with a national restaurant chain for 25 years before branching out to start his own small business, 3 Guys Pizza Pies. Holding several positions through a time of growth, Pippin said working in a larger corporation was a great learning experience, but explained, “I kind of felt like I had been an entrepreneur at heart for my whole life, but just had yet to really take the big step to go out and do my own thing.” So, when Pippin came across the opportunity to acquire an existing restaurant, he knew it was time. “You just get to a point where you have to decide: ‘I’m going to do this, and I’m prepared as I can be,’ or, ‘I’m going to let this dream go and focus here, or on another dream.’

“YOU JUST GET TO A POINT WHERE YOU HAVE TO DECIDE: ‘I’M GOING TO DO THIS, AND I’M PREPARED AS I CAN BE,’ OR, ‘I’M GOING TO LET THIS DREAM GO...” - David Pippin

I was at a point where I had read everything and had done my homework. So, we jumped in, and it was a learning experience,” Pippin said. In 2010, Pippin opened 3 Guys Pizza Pies, a full-service pizza restaurant, on Highway 64 in Lakeland, TN. He wanted the restaurant to be family-focused. “We want to be the neighborhood pizzeria where you go after the ball game,” he said. They serve draft beer, have lots of TVs for watching sporting events and arcade games for the kids. After seeing success in Lakeland, Pippin ventured into Southaven, MS before opening a third store in Collierville. If you haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying a meal at one of their locations yet, 3 Guys Pizza Pies offers a wide range of options. “A lot of our food is cooked and processed in-house. In particular, we make our dough every day, we grate our own cheese from 40 lb. blocks, and we cook [our meat] in-house,” he said. The pandemic, of course, affected 3 Guys Pizza Pies. “At first, the thought process was, are we going to be able to stay open, just from a government regulation [standpoint],” Pippin shared, “and is the public going to be buying pizza? What are we going to do about the employees? We were fortunate; we saw pretty quickly that people would come pick up the pizza.” For 3 Guys Pizza Pies, being “the neighborhood pizzeria” has been a blessing. “I think we do have an advantage of people feeling like this is their local pizza place,” says Pippin. The community support that 3 Guys Pizza Pies has received throughout the pandemic is a testament to their success. Small businesses depend on community support, and if there’s anything we’ve learned, it is that locals care about small businesses. story | AUSTIN ESSARY

Hometown Auto & Detail Collierville has been a growing town for a while now and has even surpassed the 50,000 population mark. However, one thing Collierville continues to maintain is its community. Small business owners know that they will have the support of the community behind them as they branch out into their new endeavors. For Collierville native Heath Weaver, owner of Hometown Auto and Detail, it was no different. Weaver grew up fixing cars and even worked with Toyota© and GMC©. “Cars have always been the thing,” said Weaver. After overcoming a major medical incident, Weaver decided to reassess his life. “I told myself, ‘I’m going to start my own business. I’m going to give it one year and see how it goes,’” he said. It was easy to see what that business would be. When he started his detailing business out of his home, Weaver initially had huge support from his neighbors, which transformed into enough community support to open his own shop in 2019. Since he had experience in 16

customer service, Weaver wanted that to be the main priority for his business. “I don’t meet strangers,” he said, “which is why our motto for the shop is ‘We treat you like family.’” Alongside building relationships with customers, Hometown Auto and Detail prides itself on excellent service, top-of-the-line treatments and affordable prices. Throughout this past year, Weaver has been able to maintain those relationships and even upgrade his services, now offering complimentary sanitation sprays after every detail. Hometown Auto and Detail even won The Commercial Appeal’s 2020 Memphis Most, and is the only auto detail shop to win this prize. Weaver acknowledged that without the support of the community, opening and maintaining the shop wouldn’t be possible. “We just have huge support from Collierville and Germantown,” he said, “which is why I went with Hometown [as the name] because it really means something to me.” Soon, Weaver hopes to open another shop in Germantown, to provide a closer location for some of his customers. story | AK LEWELLEN

Happiness is Homemade W

hether you’ve been involved as a realtor, builder, home buyer or are merely an observer, it is obvious that lately the Collierville real estate market has been on fire. Our market mirrors the national one — high demand coupled with lower inventory to make for an incredibly fast market. In this issue’s “Realtor Tips,” Allen Green, of John Green & Company Realtors®, explains Collierville’s real estate statistics from a year-todate perspective, detailing how the market changed from April 2020 to April 2021. The Town of Collierville is also in a steady period of growth, with 45 active residential neighborhoods, over 80 approved residential and commercial construction projects and more than 25 new projects under review as of early June. As “On The Right Path” explains, Collierville is a desirable place for corporate headquarters and new office construction for a variety of reasons. More than anything though, this past year allowed for time to focus on home improvements that enhance quality of life. Since spending more time at home, we’ve all been concentrating on how to make our homes work for us. In the next few pages, you’ll find tips on how to grow a healthy and tasty garden in your backyard (or on your kitchen counter), a beautiful renovation of an Airstream© as a home-away-from-home, trendy interior design tips if you’re thinking of shaking things up and a new kitchen that anticipates a future where large at-home gatherings are normal again. If we’ve learned anything over the past year, it’s that Collierville real estate and Collierville residents can’t be kept down — and the future only gets brighter!

GARDENING TRENDS

Trendy & Tasty GARDENING IN 2021

T

hroughout the past year, we all searched for hobbies that kept us engaged and relaxed in equal measure, so it’s no surprise that gardening hit new heights during 2020. “With so many people staying at home, there was a surge in pastimes such as gardening and cooking that provided a sense of calm and accomplishment when we weren’t able to get out and do [our] former favorite activities,” said Angelo Kelvakis, Rise Gardens© Director of Research & Development and Master Horticulturist. First spurred by the sudden lack of produce and ingredients at the grocery store early last year, home gardeners kept up the practice and the trend has only grown. Within just

22

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

a few months of lockdown, seed companies across the United States saw a double or triple increase in sales, reported Reuters©. Few people are actually harvesting enough veggies and fruits to feed their families full-time, but they are stretching what they buy from the grocery store and using it as a teaching opportunity for their kids. Whether you’re high-tech gardening indoors or getting dirt under your fingernails outside, the act of gardening is family-friendly, soothing and environmentally sustainable, so its popularity practically explains itself. “People are drawn to gardens instinctively as a way to reduce stress and bring moments of joy into our lives. There’s nothing like the feeling of seeing a seed sprout and turn into a

beautiful, nutritious plant that can feed our families,” explained Kelvakis. So whether you prefer to stay in the air-conditioning or feel the sun on your brow, here are some ways you can catch up on this gardening trend:

Indoor Gardens One of the most popular recent inventions is the “indoor garden,” where you can hydroponically grow veggies, herbs and flowers. “Hydroponics is a technique of growing plants that uses water instead of soil in order to get nutrients to the plants. In soil, microorganisms break down complex organic chemicals into forms that plants can take up. In hydroponics, because we don’t have those same microorganisms, you supply nutrients in their simplest form which plants can immediately absorb. This is one of the reasons why hydroponics can grow food faster than soil,” said Kelvakis. Some options can even fit on the kitchen counter, so fresh produce is always top of mind! Most indoor gardens provide you with 4-6 seed pods at a time, allow you to fill a reservoir tank for watering and provide automatic perfect light via an attached UV lamp that hovers above the seeds. Kelvakis recommends growing produce with cooking in mind. “When you are able to grow greens like red and green lettuce, kale, chard and arugula, you can make some tasty salads,” he said. Lettuce greens, a variety of herbs — from basil to chamomile — and small tomatoes are easiest to grow indoors, as they can be harvested and eaten fairly quickly. Outdoor Gardens Backyards are places for fun and relaxation but they can also be highly functional spaces to grow a variety of veggies for the upcoming season. When starting to plan out a backyard garden, gardener Ben Powers recommends tracking the sunlight in your yard, figuring out what you want to grow so you can determine the right growth schedule and paying attention to the quality of your soil. “I initially tried to start a garden in 2020 and didn’t pay attention to the soil quality — it totally failed, but I learned a lesson about quality and fertilization,” Powers laughed. MiracleGro© also recommends keeping in mind where your water source is located. It’s easier to bring a hose to a garden bed than to carry a heavy watering can! A 2019 study of home gardens, conducted by the University of Tennessee’s Department of Plant Sciences, revealed that bean varieties, okra, cucumbers, squash varieties, collards and pumpkins all

grow fairly well throughout the state. Powers said, “I’ve found success with mustard greens, lettuce, yellow squash and leafy greens like chard, cabbage and bok choy.” However, there are also outdoor options for people who don’t want to get too dirty. Collierville resident Cindy Richards uses Tower Gardens® by JuicePLUS+©, which combines aeroponic and hydroponic gardening to achieve near perfect results. “The roots are suspended in air and fertilized water is pumped through. There are no weeds and you use about 90% less water than in the ground. Your produce grows twice as fast and you get twice as much,” she explained. Outdoor Gardening Options • Elevated garden bed • Tower Gardens® by JuicePLUS+© • Vertical gardening trellis Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, starting small or building big in the backyard, gardening can bring you joy, fresh food and a sense of satisfaction. “These [veggies] are riper and more nutritious than grocery store produce,” Richards said. “It’s a healthy thing for me, that’s why I do it.” So, don’t feel overwhelmed and just ease into it! “[Starting a garden] can seem like a lot,” said Powers, “but don’t hesitate. You can always figure it out. Don’t overthink it.” We hope you find advice and inspiration from this article — now get out there and start growing! story | REGAN HEWITT

Gardening Tips & Tricks • Start small and experiment! Powers recommends using a 4x4 garden bed at first and utilizing the “Square Foot” gardening method, which simplifies the gardening process by dividing the bed into a grid and allows for planting seeds closer together. “It shades out weeds and creates a microclimate,” he said. • If you don’t want to break the bank on testing local soil or buying enough premium topsoil to fill an entire garden bed, alternate topsoil with yard waste, such as dead leaves and grass clippings.

2 FREE SESSIONS

• Visit a local garden center! Local employees and owners will be able to advise you on what grows well in your area, the pros and cons of different gardening styles and so much more. Powers recommends buying your seeds here as well. • Invest in gardening books and digital gardening journals, such as Territorial Seed Company’s Garden Planner©, for tracking growth, sending planting reminders and more. • Have fun with it! Whether you’re aiming to be a “market gardener” who sells food at a local farmer’s market or simply trying to have fresh salads each day of summer, never let the stress of your vision get in the way of enjoying your garden.

A New Life For

O

ver the past year, people became creative with their transition to working from home. “Van life,” as many social media influencers called it, skyrocketed all over the United States. Living in a van or renovated bus became a safer way to travel and work. However, this is far from a new concept as campers, RVs and the classic Airstream© have been around for decades. The Airstream© dates back to the 1920s and became very popular in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Today, roughly 80% of original Airstreams© are still on the road. With their compact frame, users are able to carry all of the necessities without the hassle of a giant vehicle and since the Airstream© attaches to your car, you’re still able to get around town easily. It is the perfect solution to camping in style, and for avid campers Jana and Rick Redmond, it was a dream come true. The Redmonds grew up camping with their families. Jana and her cousins would go to the park by Lake Martin, Alabama during the summer, while Rick and his grandparents would go camping around Ohio in their own Airstream©. When the couple decided to get an Airstream© for themselves, it seemed like a no-brainer. “They’re such an iconic, Americana piece of history,” said Jana. However, they wanted to make sure they found the perfect Airstream© for them. “When we decided that we wanted to look for one, we wanted an old one because we wanted to put our own spin on things,” she said. Since Airstreams© have been around for almost 100 years, there are a lot of variations in sizes and styles. “We bought four Airstreams© out of people’s pastures,” she explained. “All different sizes, and [since] the smaller ones are the most valuable, and they’re just so precious looking, we decided we were going to renovate the small one.” Since their Airstream© is over 60 years old, there was a lot of mechanical work to take care of first, such as plumbing, replacing subfloors, getting new tanks, axles and

so on. “When it was time to do the [interior] renovating, I knew exactly who to call,” Jana said. Becca Gaines, of B.Gaines Interior Design, had previously worked with Jana on other home projects. “Becca just makes the best of the situation when I bring her projects,” she said. Since the owners already had a vision for the Airstream©, now named Olive, Becca was able to bring these ideas into reality. “My vision was bright white, especially in a small space like Olive,” said Jana. With only 14 square feet of space to work in, Jana wanted the Airstream© to feel bigger while still maintaining its coziness. “One thing about working with Becca is that she just gets me. I love organic and I love fabrics,” she said. Some bigger pieces, such as the wooden

“One thing about working with Becca is that she just gets me. This is not the only clever design piece used in little Olive. Since Olive is so small and has to host two people comfortably, with the possibility of housing grandkids without too much strain, a foldable couch was a must. “We

have what they call a Gaucho Couch, which is a couch but at night you can pull it out and two people can sleep there,” explained Jana. Sleeping wasn’t the only concern. Storage space is crucial for long trips and, since space is limited, it’s important to use all of it. Charles Kinard, from 323 Woodwork, came up with a door system to allow for privacy in the bathroom without the bulkiness of a full door. “There is a closet in the bathroom, so when you close this door system, essentially two doors come together,” explained Becca. “We have some hidden ingenious touches in this camper that were brought to us when we started working with this tradesman.” “Picking out the details was just kind of the cherry on top,” said Jana. Small details were painted in an olive green color, in homage to the name, and other final touches, such as various pillows and personal items, have made Olive the perfect camper for the Redmond’s upcoming adventures. Jana and Rick enjoy camping, going to state parks across Tennessee, Alabama and Florida and tagging along on family vacations with their new Airstream©. “We love to go to the beach,” said Jana. “If any of our kids are going, we will take the Airstream© down there and get a place in the park.” Being able to have bonfires at night and cook outside, while the comforts of home are only a few steps away, adds to the quality time of their vacations. “You can really connect on a new level that’s hard to do at home,” said Jana. “It’s really sweet.” Little Olive has brought Jana and Rick together in a whole new way. “We usually go to the West Coast for vacations and we love to travel up Highway 1,” said Jana. “When we retire, I want to go up the East Coast and go up all of the coastal towns.” Little Olive has got a lot of miles ahead of her, and even more smiles and stories to share. story | AK LEWELLEN photos | SELAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY COMMERCIAL

REALTOR TIPS COLLIERVILLE REAL ESTATE YEAR IN REVIEW

As the fog begins to lift from the COVID-19 restricted year we just experienced, I thought it would be interesting to take a look in the rearview mirror and see how the real estate market in Collierville has performed. At the time of publication, the most current statistics were through the end of April 2021. Here are some quick facts about the real estate market in Collierville, from April 2020 to April 2021 year-to-date (YTD):

especially on the new home side. Rising construction costs and supply chain issues are making it harder to bring new

• The number of sales increased by 14.3%, as April sales YTD in 2021 were 336 versus 294 for 2020. • The average sales price in Collierville increased 10.7% to $465,127 in 2021 versus $420,047 in 2020. • The average price of existing homes increased 11.7% to $436,031 in 2021 versus $390,507 in 2020. • The average new home price increased 11.9% to $631,557 in 2021 versus $564,205 in 2020. As you can see the real estate market in Collierville has been very resilient over the last year and continues to keep trending in a positive direction. The total sales of 336 YTD are the largest number in Collierville since the early 2000s. With interest rates and home inventory still at all-time lows and demand for housing at an all-time high, most experts agree that the real estate prices will continue to increase, even if it is at a smaller rate than over the last twelve months. Even with values moving up, you may see a drop in the volume of sales due to the lack of inventory, 32

products to the market and will likely slow the number of sales down for the foreseeable future. While other industries, such as restaurants and hospitality, have suffered greatly over the last year, the residential real estate market in Collierville has not only held its own — it has excelled! Hopefully, when we look back next year, it will be a similar result.

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS

Trends That Will

Become Tradition About an hour northeast of Charlotte and an hour west of Raleigh, tucked into the middle of North Carolina, lies High Point. It is the furniture capital of the country, cuddled in what would seemingly be the middle of nowhere. Yet it holds a powerful grasp on the trends and direction of the entire furniture market, both nationally and internationally. When you drive into High Point, you are greeted by a beautiful university, which is then very quickly followed by what looks like a high-rise downtown area of nothing but furniture brands. After a year of COVID-19 and unprecedented hurdles, welcome to High Point Market 2021! For three days, you must shuttle around town to prevent exhaustion and plan

34

on having a high energy bank to make it through. I got to immerse myself this year and saw three distinct trends. I’m not one for trends, but these are here to stay! The first thing we saw, everywhere, was gold. You’ve seen it and probably thought, “Nope. This is going out as quickly as it came in.” Trust me, this isn’t your grandmother’s gold bathroom faucet. Embrace it. Start small with some accessories and then let it grow. We saw gold and antique bronze everywhere and couldn’t get enough of it. You can even mix it! It is the furniture version of the skinny jean, so save your jealousy and get some. You won’t be disappointed.

The second thing that we couldn’t get enough of was motion. Who doesn’t love a swivel chair, especially if it also glides, reclines and is in a gorgeous custom fabric? What about a recliner that backs up flush against a wall and reclines all the way back without changing angles on the wall? I know – we’re blowing your mind right now. We saw recliners disguised as normal chairs everywhere and we were not upset at all. Finally, your husband can get the recliner he wants, and you don’t have to look at those bulky pillow arms ruining your

flow. Put something in motion. It is soothing, conducive for conversation and great for entertainment. Lastly — and shockingly my favorite — was color! I couldn’t get enough of it, which surprised me because I am a lover of all things cream, grey and navy. Now, however, wrap me in jewel tones, tuck me in a velvet blush, top me off with any blue leather and call me done. Color can be intimidating, but so rewarding and fun. Pick a good statement piece and build around it. If you love leather, it is a good time for you! Get a new leather piece but instead of a traditional deep brown, try a soft blue or a kale green with nailhead. You won’t regret it. You might not know where to start, so grab a friend, find a furniture store with individualized customer service, go in, take your time shopping and embrace the change. Your home begs you.

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

A

lthough we’ve spent the past year limiting gatherings, Bathsheba Sams was preparing for the future, when parties would once again be routine. When she moved into her Collierville home in 2002, she had to do very little work on the home. Only recently, did she consider some changes. “About five years ago, I started thinking about how to make [my kitchen] more open,” said Sams. “I wanted to allow for connection, and make it more functional.” The COVID-19 pandemic gave her the time to invest in her kitchen and make those changes she had been thinking about. Designer Wholesale came recommended by a friend and they immediately began work on Sams’ home. From early November 2020 to late January 2021, the team totally transformed the space into exactly what Sams had imagined. To open the space, two walls were removed — one between the kitchen and dining room, and one that separated the kitchen from the living room, where the barstools are now. “That was actually a load bearing wall that they had to reinforce and build a secondary stud structure for,” explained Sams. A counter at the end of the kitchen, that separated the kitchen from the hearth room, was also removed. Now, the kitchen, dining room and hearth room flow together, allowing for constant conversation and engaging

floors and the seats of the barstools, to make sure they all flowed together! Now that the kitchen and dining room are complete, Sams said, “I could not be more pleased with the outcome. I like that there’s more space for social cooking, and you can have multiple people preparing food.” This is a home just waiting for its next big gathering! story | REGAN HEWITT

interactions across the house. Sams said, “I tell people, if they come over, be prepared to participate in the meal, even if it’s just [by] opening a bottle of wine.” Sams chose her new kitchen cabinets — described as a “vanilla bean” color — and their hardware from the Designer Wholesale showroom. Her granite countertops keep the cream color scheme consistent while incorporating the darker cabinets found in the dining room. “I like neutrals because then I can do a lot more with colors,” Sams explained, “rather than committing to a blue or gray.” In the dining room, darker cabinets were built-in on top to provide contrast, while keeping a neutral tone, and the lower cabinets match those in the kitchen. In addition to glass-fronted cabinets and both a wine rack and wine fridge, they included a single corner cabinet to double as a serving space and a games cabinet! The dining room table and the kitchen island were both custom built. The island itself is mobile, with tons of storage space in the form of large drawers. “The kitchen didn’t really have enough room for [an island], but I wanted one. So, they built a moveable one. I’ve slid it down to the end of the kitchen and served charcuterie off of it,” explained Sams. A new table was also something Sams had been interested in for a while. “I wanted a farm style table, instead of a formal dining table,” said Sams. “When I mentioned it, Mark [at Designer Wholesale] said, ‘I can do that.’ He found 150-year-old wood from barn doors and made it.” The team also restained the hardwood

On The Right Path: C O L L I E R V I L L E U N I Q U E LY POSITION ED FOR OFFICE

I recently read an article where Ben Owenell, co-managing director of GBT Realty, said of the Brentwood, Tennessee area, “…with very little Class A office currently available in this growing submarket, the site is an opportunity for a company to gain tremendous visibility but also offer its employees a community with a high standard of living, recreational amenities and a quality public school system.” Owenell could have easily been talking about Collierville, as our community is uniquely positioned to take full advantage of the post-pandemic office development wave. Besides the fact that Collierville sits in Memphis’ primary path of growth and affluence, what other advantages can we offer?

CORPORATE BASE The FedEx® World Technology Center (WTC) drives our economy in numerous ways and influences other corporate office users. In previous pieces, I have shared that FedEx® receives over 10,000 non-badged visitors per year and over 700 of their team members actually live in Collierville. With median home values currently at $330,000, that’s roughly $230,000,000 of residential property value influenced by FedEx®. FedEx’s® stability in our submarket has directly and indirectly motivated others to be part of our community.

We now have close to 4,000 corporate headquarters jobs in Town, as JuicePLUS ©, Helena Agri-Enterprises ®, MCR Safety©, Orgill ©, Mueller Industries © and IMC Companies © have all made the strategic decision to be part of one of the most attractive office markets in the region.

DECISION DRIVERS Site selection consultant John Boyd, with The Boyd Company©, coined the key factors in office site selection with the term “TALIO.” What does “TALIO” stand for and why is it important? How does Collierville stack up? Talent: With close to 60% of our population holding a bachelor’s degree, our market is an attractive place for business professionals and technology talent to live or commute. Proximity to the University of Memphis, University of Mississippi, Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University ranks us high on the talent tally. Access: Having an airport with strong domestic and international flights is a key corporate relocation driver. Our airport continues to upgrade their schedule, which is critical for a serious headquarters relocation and expansion contender. In the meantime, our central location gives us same-day or next-day access to over 40% of the U.S. population.

Lifestyle: One of the key elements to any company’s long-term success is their ability to retain talent. The award-winning Collierville School System, our diverse housing market, ready access to healthcare and top-shelf recreational amenities add greatly to our retention score. Incentives: In the competitive world of economic development, incentives, such as tax abatements, play an elevated role in the overall recruitment process. Through our Industrial Development Board, Collierville offers tax incentives that are fully vetted, analyzed and managed. Operating Costs: When you compare Tennessee to the other fifty states as it relates to costs and business friendliness, we historically rank in the Top 10. A recent CNBC© study, “America’s Top States for Business,” places Tennessee at #13 overall.

SUBURBAN SHIFT The “end of the office forever” is somewhat overstated, in my humble opinion. I think that office space will change to accommodate the next wave of office work as we know it. People will still work at the office as part of their work rhythm… it just might be nuanced. Collierville is perfectly positioned

here, as we have close to 400 acres of developable land available to welcome the new, redesigned and reconfigured office space. Also, as we continue to grow to over 50,000 in population, we are located where the workers live. Commute times and access to the office are to our advantage. Attractive, wellrounded and accessible suburban office markets will continue to be popular. I remain bullish that our well-positioned and unique community will continue to be an attractive consideration as organizations work on their longterm facilities plans. Southern Security Federal Credit Union© will soon break ground on their 20,000 square foot facility on Byhalia, and David Halle has aspirations for 32,000 square feet of office space to complement his residential development at Poplar and Bailey Station. You might say, when it comes to office development, Collierville is on the right path. John D. One Kitty. Two Kitty. W H I T E K I T T Y. N E W KI TTY. I like it here. I like it a lot. Someone had me as their pet, but then they forgot. My name is Riley and I like to cuddle. When humans pet me, I melt into a puddle. When I arrived at the shelter, I had much to learn. Then, they discovered something about me. Now my story takes a turn. The humans here noticed that sometimes I miss when I jump. Strange for most kitties, even those that are plump. They took me to the vet who made us aware. I have cerebellar hypoplasia, which gave me a scare! But it’s not a big deal, I’m just like other cats. So if you paused here to worry, waste no time with that! Sometimes I wobble when I walk or I play. The humans say “it makes me cuter,” and that makes my day. My condition isn’t contagious, but it is forever. But not a concern, I’m used to it, I’m clever. One more thing I need to confide. My condition requires that I MUST LIVE INSIDE. I’m only one-year-old, so I’m playful and fun. I like to chase pipe cleaners; I bat them and run. I’m healthy and ready for my forever home; searching for someone to call my very own. Could you be my human, my forever, my love? I feel confident you are. We will fit like a glove! Please come by the shelter and meet me, please do. Because forever will be awesome if it’s me and it’s you.

XOXO,

Riley

Renovating Friendship

In many ways, the Bible is a story of friendship. There is friendship within the Godhead between Father, Son and Spirit. God befriends Adam and Eve in the garden, but sin breaks the friendship. As God’s revelation continues, people stay distant and friendship with God repeatedly fails because of sin. Jesus came to restore our friendship with God. The Pharisees call Jesus a friend of sinners, which was intended to be an insult, but nothing could be further from the truth. In Mark 2:13-17, Jesus makes his way to the shore of the Sea of Galilee and continues to teach. As he is passing by, Jesus sees a man named Levi sitting at a tax booth. Jewish tax collectors were easily the most hated men in

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” -Mark 2:13-17 Hebrew society, as they had betrayed their own people for the Romans. Jesus sees more than a social pariah; he sees the man. Jesus does the unthinkable and calls this “villain” to follow him, and the craziest thing happens – he does. He leaves his job, deserts his post and follows Jesus. Later, Levi hosts a party for all his tax collector and sinner friends. Jesus joins this motley crew surrounded by

42

disciples and sinners. This revolutionary social practice is too much for the scribes and Pharisees to bear. In disgusting condescension, they question Jesus’ behavior and companions. He does not argue with them about sin but clarifies that he did not come for the religious hypocrite who claims to be righteous by his religious deeds. Jesus is a physician who has come for the sinner who acknowledges the malady of a sin-sick soul. Jesus loves sinners and delights in seeing their transformation. Levi, who many will recognize as the gospel writer Matthew, leaves everything to follow Jesus. The grace of God transforms this greedy tax collector into a faithful disciple. Is it possible to have a friend who knows you better than anyone, even better than you know yourself? A friend who, despite knowing everything about you, still loves you, even likes you? Could you have a friend who will transform you so that you might be a better friend to others? Yes. His name is Jesus. He is a friend of sinners. He will be your friend too.
