Royal Botanical Gardens by Tourism Burlington
Nestled between the escarpment and the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe, Burlington is close to the urban buzz of Toronto, yet surrounded by the tranquil beauty of parks and gardens. Our city offers visitors a full spectrum of activities, from scaling the heights of the Niagara escarpment to catching trophy sized salmon in a great lake. There’s culture, history, festivals and fun all year round in this safe and friendly community.
For Naturalists & Adventurers Paradise found! Enjoy a walk along the Waterfront Trail and Brant Street Pier, have a picnic or just relax and enjoy the view. You will see all kinds of boating activity, from lake freighters and sailboats to kayaks and wind surfers. There are thousands of acres of parks and conservation areas offering year round adventures. Bird watching is a rewarding experience here, with trumpeter swans, bald eagles, pelicans, great horned owls and several endangered birds making their homes in the parks and along the water’s edge. For a naturally occurring oddity, visit one of the only magnetic hills in Canada, on a rural section of King Rd. At Bronte Creek Provincial Park, children can enjoy the play barn as well as watch the farm animals up close. There’s a historically preserved farmhouse where you can experience life as it would have been live in the late 1800’s. Swimming, hiking or learning about wildlife are all activities that visitors can enjoy.
A World Famous Royal Garden: Named one of the top ten gardens in the world, the Royal Botanical Gardens is Canada’s only royal and its largest botanical garden. Visitors come from around the world to see the spectacular collection of lilacs, the world’s largest, the magnificent rose gardens and the masses of tulips, peonies and irises in the spring. In summer months, there is an international sculpture show in the gardens along with special events, plant sales, nature walks, gardening and painting workshops. In the winter the popular Holiday Traditions exhibit with its unique model trains is a must do seasonal activity for families. The shop in the garden’s centre is a great place to find special one-of-a-kind gifts.

Adventure at Our Doorstep: Kelso/Glen Eden, Mountsberg, Crawford Lake, Hilton Falls,
Rattlesnake Point, Robert Edmonstone and Mount Nemo Conservation areas offer adventure experiences, such as hiking, rock-climbing, swimming, skiing and fishing, and each reflects a distinct character through its special attractions. Visit an authentically reconstructed native village at Crawford Lake, or sleep under the stars at Kelso. Do an Owl Prowl or Wolf Howl, learn about raptors and birds of prey or just enjoy the quiet serenity of rural Halton. For a truly unique adventure, head to the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve, to hike the pathways created hundreds of years ago along the Iroquoia portion of the Bruce Trail.

Play in Our Parks:
Enjoy the Downtown Waterfront where the Rotary Centennial Pond serves as a reflecting pool and miniature sailboat space in summer and a skating rink in winter. The Dofasco Waterjet Park is the ideal place for children to play on hot summer days, and the elegant Spencer’s at the Waterfront provides fine dining with a spectacular view of the pier. Visit Paletta Lakefront Park to experience a 14-acre heritage estate on the lake. At LaSalle Park, you can feed the ducks and trumpeter swans and watch freighters come into the bay. There are excellent picnicking opportunities at LaSalle, Hidden Valley or Lowville Parks and many offer hiking trails, fishing, playgrounds, and winter activities. For a more contemplative experience, walk the Central Park Labyrinth, one of the first Canadian labyrinths in a public space that is wheelchair accessible.
Walk the Pier The Brant Street Pier is a signature destination in Spencer Smith Park that extends 137 metres over Lake Ontario providing breathtaking views of the lake and Burlington’s shoreline. The pier has a distinctive S-shape, colourful lighting, and unique lookout above the deck that provides a great vantage point to watch water sports, sunrises and take in the festivals held in the park.

For Arts and Culture Enthusiasts A visit to the Burlington Art Centre will introduce you to local, national and international artists and to the world’s largest collection of contemporary Canadian ceramics. There are frequent exhibits and exceptional finds in the Art Etc. shop where you can buy juried art created by well known artists. Spend some time in the indoor conservatory, or enjoy a snack at the Café. If a play is the thing for you, Burlington’s talented local theatrical groups are on-stage with productions throughout the year. The Burlington Performing Arts Centre brings big name shows to the city plus showcases community activities. Check out the performance calendar at burlingtonpac.ca for details. In the summer, the city comes alive hosting several major outdoor festivals. During the Sound of Music, streets are closed to traffic and every corner becomes a venue for bands. There is also “Concerts in the Park” to enjoy throughout the summer, featuring local musicians at beautiful outdoor parks and at the Royal Botanical Gardens. For something completely different, visit the Crossroads Centre, where cutting-edge broadcast technology mixes with spiritual outreach. This state-of-the-art facility boasts one of the finest television production centres in the world, a beautiful chapel and is the production headquarters for 100 Huntley Street, Canada’s longest running television show.

Watch History Come Alive One of the earliest areas of Ontario to be settled, Burlington has a vibrant history and preserves it in both its museums and historic streets. Joseph Brant Museum, is a replica of the home of one of Canada’s most colourful heroes. Captain Joseph Brant was an aboriginal leader and United Empire Loyalist who helped the British fight in the American Revolutionary War. He built his home on land he was granted by King George III, just a few hundred yards south-west of the present day museum. The museum has exhibit space and houses more than 10,000 artifacts. Stroll the historic streets of downtown Burlington to discover some of its first homes, and churches dating back to the late 1800s. A Walking Tour of Burlington Downtown brochure is available from the Visitor Information Centre or on our website. The Burlington Historical Society has published a number of interesting books on the area which are available for purchase at our Centre. Travel through three distinct time periods with a visit to Ireland House at Oakridge Farm, (circa 1835-1837), a living history museum and woodland, gardens, a potting shed, cottage/drive shed, and picnic areas. Tours of the property, living historical demonstrations, special events and educational programs are offered. North of the city you can find the Halton Region Museum, with its fascinating display of artifacts that tell the story of the early days of Halton. Antique quilts, shadow boxes, old implements and authentic clothing bring history to real life. Be sure to plan a visit to the Streetcar & Electric Railway Museum where you can take a ride and explore the 1912 Grand Trunk railway station.

Day Trip Destinations Burlington is a great place to use as your base for day-trips, with drive-to destinations offering a full day of entertainment, or leisurely scenic drives along the waterfront or countryside. Here are a few suggestions or you can contact the Visitor Centre for other ideas and more detailed directions.
• Great Attractions – Head out to the Royal Botanical Gardens,which has Canada’s longest
footpath, the Bruce Trail, running through it. Plan a hike or just wander through the beautiful gardens and enjoy lunch, events and other amenities offered.
• Burlington’s Waterfront - Spend the day exploring the waterfront with its pier, children’s
play area and water jet plaza, and enjoying Spencer Smith Park. Cross the street to tour the Burlington Art Centre and the Joseph Brant Museum and enjoy dining downtown. In winter pack your skates and enjoy the lakeside rink and Festival of Lights.
• Bronte Creek Provincial Park features trails, camping, a play barn with farm animals, skating rink and the largest outdoor pool in Canada so, it is a perfect stop in any season.
• Follow quiet rural roads north into the Niagara Escarpment for panoramic views
and great outdoor adventure at the various conservation areas. Tucked beneath the Niagara Escarpment, the Halton Region Museum sits in the heart of Kelso Conservation Area, and is the centre for exploring Halton’s natural and cultural heritage.

Scenic Drives • East Lakeshore – from the Visitor Centre, head east on Lakeshore Road past beautiful homes
on tree-lined streets. Stop at waterfront parks en route: Sioux Lookout, Paletta Lakefront and Burloak for spectacular Lake Ontario vistas. Continue on to Oakville to watch the boats come in at Bronte and Oakville Harbours.
• Beach Drive – from the Visitor Centre, go west on Lakeshore Road and turn left before the
Joseph Brant Museum. Be sure to stop at Beachway Park and rent a pedalboat or stand-up board, then take a walk across the boardwalk at the dune crossing. Turn left onto Eastport Drive, Hamilton, where you can stop at the Canal to see large freighters and pleasure boats go through the lift bridge. Walk the waterfront trail at Confederation Park and stop for a cool drink overlooking the water.
• North Shore – from the Visitor Centre, head west on Lakeshore Road, which turns into
North Shore Blvd. The tree-lined streets with up-scale residential homes show glimpses of the waterfront enroute. Stop at LaSalle Park and Marina to walk the trails and gaze at sailboats in the bay. Continue on LaSalle Park Blvd to Plains Rd. and head west for a stop at Royal Botanical Gardens and then continue along York Blvd to Dundurn Castle in Hamilton.
• Rural Burlington – from the Visitor Centre, head north on Brant St. until it becomes Cedar
Springs Rd. Travel through farmland intermixed with golf courses until you reach Britannia Rd. Go east to Guelph Line and north into the village of Lowville, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch at Lowville Park. 16
