DIRECTORS’ NOTES
Welcome to the 2019 Lawyer Show! This year marks our 18th season of this event, and we are delighted to present Urinetown: The Musical!
This is the off-the-wall musical that went from the New York Fringe Festival to Broadway and has been produced around the world. The themes of ecological devastation, a culture of desperation and unequal wealth distribution seem to ring out louder than ever. The satire allows us to laugh and gasp...and the music is just so darned catchy!
This event is a showcase of a community of wonderfully talented and committed performers who work on this show year in and year out. You’ll see veteran performers who have spent a lot of time onstage, as well as some fresh new faces in their very first Lawyer Show. They make it look easy but these generous souls have put a lot of their cherished free time into this show, rehearsing for a combined 3,430 volunteer hours. A shout out to our design team and to our returning Musical Director, Arielle and newly enlisted Choreographer, Lyndsey. We couldn’t do it without their creativity and the amazing dedication of our talented cast and band.
Lawyer Shows play a leading role in supporting the theatre arts and are a true partnership between the business and artistic communities as we come together to raise funds for outreach activities, youth programming and new play development. The staff and Board of both Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre would like to send a sincere thank you to our wonderful and loyal sponsors, reception and silent auction donors, ad purchasers, special guests and everyone who buys a ticket – you all make an important contribution to our major fundraising event of the year, making it possible for us to dream a little bigger.
Thank YOU for joining us this evening! We give you a standing ovation for your support of theatre in Vancouver, our two companies and the fantastic cast of performer/lawyers on stage. Please join us at the reception in the lobby after the show for some great food, drink and celebrations!

CAST
Michael Airton OFFICER BARREL
This is Michael’s twelfth Lawyer Show, and this year he returns as Officer Barrel, the thuggish but well-meaning (?) sidekick to Officer Lockstock. After nearly ten years practicing personal injury law for plaintiffs, Michael recently joined the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC as legal counsel in the Child and Youth Services Division. Michael recently realized that his characters in two of his last three Lawyer Show appearances got violently murdered, but he’s quite sure that’s just a coincidence and won’t be repeated this year.
Wes Berger HOT BLADES HARRY
Wes is thrilled to rejoin The Lawyer Show following his turn as Teen Angel in 2017’s production of Grease. This year, he’s back to bring a sadistic flavour to the Rebel Poor’s drive for social change. Outside The Lawyer Show, Wes’ career highlights feature a stint as Huckleberry Finn in Patti Hillman’s 2001 run of Tom Sawyer, a go-go-go-go as Joseph in Colin Vint’s 2005 production of Joseph, and a role as the maniacal Reg Brewes in the 2015 UBC Law Revue. “At least they can’t say I’ve peaked early.”
Rob Burns JOSEPH ‘OLD MAN’ STRONG / ExECUTIVE
Rob’s life as a thespian began at UBC with a role as Batman. There was an interlude of some 40 years before returning to the boards. In nine outings with The Lawyer Show he has played a guitar slinging Duke, a fire conjuring Enchanter, a Broadway producer and a high school principal. In this tenth venture, his character’s rebellious behavior and the ensuing consequences will spark a revolt! It is a fantastic experience and an honour to be part of this amazing cast and to be able to support such worthy organizations as Carousel and Touchstone. In the off season Rob sings with the North Shore choir “Espiritu” and the infamous Plucking Twits. He has recently retired from his practice at North Shore Law LLP. There will be time for more theatre, music and boat building.

Alison Colpitts ROBBY THE STOCKFISH
Alison just finished law school and will clerk at the BC Court of Appeal in September. She’ll then return to Clark Wilson LLP for her articles, having summered there last year. As an undergraduate student, Alison performed in Hair!, Urinetown, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe and she is particularly excited to be part of another Urinetown production. Alison joined The Lawyer Show last year and is thrilled to have found that the legal community shares her passion for song and dance. She fills her days with reading (for fun!), yoga, feminism, and tea.
Alison is proudly sponsored by Superstar Sponsor Clark Wilson LLP
Katie Comley DR. BILLEAUx
Katie Comley is an associate with Miller Thomson LLP, practicing labour and employment law. After graduating from the Allard School of Law at UBC in 2015, where she co-wrote and co-directed its Law Revue, Katie was delighted to discover The Lawyer Show. Urinetown is Katie’s third time treading the boards; the first was as Prudy Pingleton in Hairspray (2016), and the second was with the ensemble in Grease (2017). She would like to thank this year’s brilliant cast and crew, and her husband Ruaidhri for supporting her musical theatre habit.
Shannon Currie TEAM CLADWELL
Shannon is thrilled to be cast in the chorus of this year’s show in her first Lawyer Show appearance. Shannon is a tax litigator at the Department of Justice and has practiced there since 2008 when she was called to the bar. She is grateful to be part of this charitable event in support of the arts. Many thanks to everyone at Touchstone and Carousel Theatres who have worked hard to bring this production to stage. The committed and talented cast is sure to put on an entertaining show!
Cobi Dayan MR. MCQUEEN
Cobi is thrilled to be back for his fourth Lawyer Show, having previously appeared in The Drowsy Chaperone, Grease, and Hairspray. Cobi caught the acting bug and had his first foray into theatre over 20 years ago, right here at Carousel Theatre for Young People. You may also recognize Cobi from his performance as Commercial Litigation Associate at Miller Thomson LLP, a role he has enjoyed playing since 2016. Cobi wants to thank everyone involved in this year’s production and to Mel and Aviva for all their love and support!

CAST
John Forstrom
CALDWELL B. CLADWELL
John practices commercial litigation as Associate Counsel with Hakemi & Ridgedale LLP, a proud sponsor of The Lawyer Show for many years. John’s most recent (and only) prior theatrical role was in a 1978 high school production of The Mikado, in which he played a small, but pivotal role as a “gentleman of Japan” in several crowd scenes. Now, unencumbered by the conventional constraints of experience, training or any demonstrable talent, John hopes to bring a fresh new perspective to interpreting the role of Caldwell B. Cladwell, the evil plutocrat who runs Urinetown. John wishes to extend his hearty thanks to all the good people of Carousel and Touchstone Theatre for providing him with this opportunity – and remind the rest of you that it was their idea.
Johanna Goosen MRS. MILLENNIUM
Johanna is thrilled to be returning to The Lawyer Show for the sixth year in a row! Thanks to the cast and crew for making the experience so much fun. And thanks to Touchstone Theatre and Carousel Theatre for Young People for running such amazing programs and making all of this possible.
Liam Kearns OFFICER LOCKSTOCK
Liam is delighted to be making his 5th appearance with The Lawyer Show, having appeared in Spamalot, Legally Blonde and Hairspray and last year as the bumbling lothario, Aldolpho in The Drowsy Chaperone. When he is not being a property and estates lawyer, Liam sings with the Vancouver-based men’s choir, Chor Leoni and traveled on tour with them last summer to Singapore and Bali. Other notable shows have been Shrek, How To Succeed in Business..., Sweet Charity (TUTS), Guys & Dolls (RCMT) and Falsettos (Wizard). Thanks goes out to his family and best buddies, Ryan, Mo and Gary who are always there to hear about his triumphs and tragedies!
Paul Kressock TINY TOM
Paul returns for his third Lawyer Show, having appeared in Hairspray in 2016 and Grease in 2017. He finds The Lawyer Show to be a refreshing change of pace and nothing gives him a greater thrill than musical theatre – save, perhaps, a nice cross-examination!

Jennifer Lang-Hodge TEAM CLADWELL
This is Jennifer’s first year performing in The Lawyer Show, and she is thrilled to join such a talented cast! Jennifer spent much of her childhood in competitive dance and choir, and she is delighted to be back on the stage! She loves Broadway musicals, and has been to New York multiple times solely for the purpose of watching as many Broadway shows as possible. When not rehearsing for Urinetown: The Musical, Jennifer practices in the area of Employment & Labour Law at Norton Rose Fulbright.
Justin Lapeña BILLY BOY BILL
Justin is an administration manager at Kearns & Company and a Vancouver based actor/graduate of Capilano University’s Musical Theatre Program. CAST
Kate Lawrence TEAM CLADWELL / ExECUTIVE
Kate Lawrence is proud to represent North Shore Law LLP in Carousel and Touchstone Theatre’s 2019 production of The Lawyer Show, Urinetown! As much as Kate abhors the various human rights violations in Urinetown, she is delighted that she was invited to join this year’s cast as they sing and dance their way to annihilation in this dystopian (near) future dramedy. Hail Malthus!
Gerald Lecovin SENATOR FIPP
This will be my 19th Lawyer Show. My days of bouncing onto the scene in shorts and with a racquet, yelling “tennis anyone?” have long passed. Each year’s show I expect to be my last. But then, lo and behold, a part emerges, doable by a senior citizen. I attend try-outs, not to demonstrate my talents, but rather to confirm my survival. So, as the show must go on, so must Lecovin. I wish to acknowledge the efforts of that phalanx of faceless physicians fantasizing over my frail physique, but for whom I should tonight be playing Yorick.
Julia Law
LITTLE SALLY
Julia Hyunju Law is a senior associate at Borden Ladner Gervais in the Insurance Tort and Liability group. After dabbling in drama classes and church productions, Julia’s childhood dream was to go into theatre. When Julia was in high school, her mother took her to a local theatre in her hometown Victoria, B.C. While she was captured by the performance, her mother revealed the main character was pursuing his interest for acting while practicing as a lawyer. Julia believes this foreshadowed her taking part in The Lawyer Show today. This is Julia’s second Lawyer Show and she is very excited to be a part of it. Julia wants to thank her husband, Tim, and her son, Eden, for supporting mommy’s creative outlet!
Linda Leong Sum PENELOPE PENNYWISE
Of her eight Lawyer Show roles, this is Linda’s crappiest. A poo-pourri of favourites include: Trix (The Drowsy Chaperone), Motormouth Maybelle (Hairspray), Muriel (DRS), Paulette (Legally Blonde), Domina (Forum), and Jenny Southstreet (Guys and Dolls). She has also performed in numerous local productions, including The Music Man, The King and I, The Forbidden Phoenix (Richmond Gateway), Heathers the Musical, The Wedding Singer, The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Fighting Chance) and The Theory of Everything and Flower Drum Song (VACT). Linda works as a diversity consultant/harassment investigator. Enjoy the amenity!

Kaja Marinic TEAM CLADWELL
Kaja is a third year associate at Burns Fitzpatrick LLP working in general civil litigation. This is her second time participating in The Lawyer Show. While she enjoyed playing a 1920s wedding guest last year, Kaja appreciates the opportunity to really test her acting chops as a soulless, bloodsucking professional in a suit. Besides performing in rooms full of lawyers, Kaja’s hobbies include playing soccer, skiing, learning ukulele, and cuddling an incredibly sweet cat named Maclean.

Carousel Theatre for Young People has been creating theatre for young people since 1976 and is Vancouver’s professional mainstage TYA Company. Our vision: to empower young people through the magic of theatre.
Young People are not simply audience members at CTYP; they are active participants at the very centre of all that we do. Carole’s vision Stages of Play encompasses a full season on our Family Stage at the Waterfront Theatre, explores Shakespeare’s canon every summer with our Teen Shakespeare Stage, and explores original Canadian creations for our BEE Stage. CTYP’s year-round drama school teaches young people ages 3-17 to express their creativity and individuality through the theatrical form.
Each year 35,000+ young people, educators and families attend CTYP’s effervescent theatrical experiences. Our playful approach to creation and collaboration, unwavering commitment to outstanding production values and attentiveness to mentoring emerging theatre artists are key principals of our artistic practice. A testament to the artistic quality of the productions we create, CTYP’s pursuit of excellence has been recognized with 87 Jessie nominations and 13 awards in the last ten years.
Carousel Theatre for young People would like to thank the following funders for their ongoing support:
