3 HAI SING CATHOLIC SCHOOL 2023
Dear HAIsians, It is with great pleasure and a sense of pride that I extend a warm welcome to each one of you as we unveil the latest edition of our school magazine. In 2023, a significant chapter unfolded in our school’s story – our shift to a temporary campus. Despite the physical constraints of an unfamiliar setting, our school community continues to thrive with a vibrant, can-do energy. The rich tapestry of experiences captured within the pages of this magazine is a testament to the resilience, adaptability and indomitable spirit that define Hai Sing Catholic. As you embark on a visual journey through the carefully selected photographs of significant school events, take the time to reflect on your personal growth and pay tribute to the dedication, effort and love of your teachers who have guided you through the year. May this magazine bring you much joy and inspire you to embrace change, celebrate resilience, and recognize the strength that lies within our community. Ad Veritatem per Caritatem, Hai Sing shine forth! Ms Adeline Lim Principal

Celebrating Triumphs - A testament to perseverance and growth As we stand at the threshold of a new chapter, it’s crucial to acknowledge the incredible journey our HAIsians have undertaken. Their achievement is a celebration of their unwavering perseverance, grit, and tireless effort. In a world that often measures success in outcomes, it is the journey that defines us. Our HAIsians have demonstrated a remarkable growth mindset that goes beyond the classroom walls. The challenges they faced were not roadblocks; they were stepping stones that propelled them forward. They confronted difficulties head-on, learned from setbacks, and persisted in the face of adversity. Well done, HAIsians! You’ve created a roadmap for others to follow!

“During the training session, I learnt about my role and duties as a Class Chairperson. I realised that I play a very crucial role in my class as I am a representation of my class - a role model whom my classmates follow. During the Investiture Ceremony, as I rose, my teacher pinned the chairperson badge on my collar. I felt a sense of pride.” ~ Isaac Loh, 4 Truth

For the first time, the HSC Student Leaders Investiture recognised and inaugurated CCA Captains/Presidents alongside the Student Council EXCO. Our special guest, Mr Aadil Jamari from the Class of 4E3 2019 (7th SC EXCO, Director of Community Outreach Branch) delivered an impactful speech and reminded us that regardless of position or title, all Haisians can choose to serve, make an impact, and write their own leadership story.

HSC’s Personal Advancement and Development in Leadership (PAdDLe) workshops are 3h modules focused on building Sec 1 and 3 students’ self and team leadership competencies. As a follow-up to the PAdDLe modules, the Student Ambassadors in Leadership (SAiL) Camp aims to further build pinnacle student leaders’ self and team leadership competencies according to the language of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership; equip them with the desired traits of a servant leader based on our school values; and enable them to contribute actively within their respective spheres of influence - whether it be their Class, their CCA or the whole student body (as Student Councillors).

A big part of mental well-being is also about finding our purpose as youth: being PROUD of our potential to grow, learn and achieve! We were very happy that we could commemorate Youth Day in conjunction with HAI Spirits Week. This comprised three Morning Podcasts on mental well-being, an Assembly programme to Inspire (Stories from Haisians), Aspire (Rubiks’ Cube Competition) and Perspire (Teachers’ Dance and Fruit Popsicle Treat), and a special CCE lesson.
63 HAI SING CATHOLIC SCHOOL 2023
As a precursor to the 2024 Secondary 1 Orientation, the Student Councillors and the selected Senior Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs) planned a series of station games for the whole Sec 2 cohort. Through a plethora of activities, Sec 2 students were able to work cohesively and celebrate their final moments together as a lower secondary class whilst working towards common goals.

Every HAIsian will go through a 2 year ALP programme - STEM in Education (Sec 1) and STEM in Community (Sec 2). This year, students took coding lessons to develop their logic reasoning skills. They then went on to complete design and build tasks where they constructed models, prototypes, or structures to solve problems or understand engineering principles. This culminated in a SMART City project where they applied their learning. The programme helps students develop 21 CC Inventive and Critical Thinking skills, and a deeper understanding of STEM concepts.

To deepen our students’ connection with their cultural heritage, students were introduced to three engaging activities during the year-end Hai-Experiential Week: Dikir Barat, Gasing, and Chinese Klotski. The Gasing game proved especially thrilling, requiring participants to whip and ensure the top’s continuous spin. Dikir Barat had students immersed in rhythmic tunes, clapping in unison, while Chinese Klotski offered a test of wits and patience, a delight for puzzle-solving enthusiasts.

The Sec 1 Drama Exposure Programme provided a captivating entry into the realm of performing arts. Beyond merely observing, students actively immersed themselves in real-life scenarios, delving into social issues through interactive storytelling, a defining aspect of Forum Theatre. Students also had the opportunity to participate in the drama and their response helped to shape the outcome of the plot. It was a powerful platform for dialogue, enabling students to address and rethink everyday challenges.

The tea appreciation programme at our school was a delightful blend of education and hands-on experience. Students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of tea, gaining insights into its diverse varieties and cultural significance. From sampling aromatic teas to mastering the art of crafting bubble tea, our students not only gain more knowledge about tea and its origins but also get to make their own tea and appreciate the wellloved beverage.

The Traditional Martial Arts workshop for the Sec 3s this year proved to be a dynamic and enlightening experience. Our knowledgeable trainers not only delved into the origins of this traditional art but also shared intriguing facts about various martial stances. Students also learnt about values like respect and resilience which they also apply in their daily lives. The highlight undoubtedly was the synchronized performance of different stances, showcasing the students’ newfound skills in a delightful display.

This year’s theme, Better Than Yesterday, is a powerful reminder that growth and progress is a continuous process that requires effort, dedication, and resilience. This theme encapsulates the idea that our ultimate goal should not be perfection but rather a steady and consistent improvement in every aspect of our lives. This year, we also paid tribute to our foundress, Mary of the Passion, who enabled the growth of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and made the founding of our school possible. We chose to combine these two events as a symbol of our gratitude to our Foundress, whose legacy lives on in the academic achievements of our students.

As part of the celebration theme “Onward As One” on 8 August, everyone was encouraged to wear red to school. Our Uniformed Groups marched past as part of the Observance Ceremony. There were concert performances by both the students and teachers to celebrate the nation’s birthday. Classroom activities included the “Recollections Video” and bunting activity to revisit the challenges we have faced as a nation over the years. It was a significant day of reflections and celebration for everyone.

This year’s focus for the school’s Values In Action Projects is “Relations@St21”. As we moved into the holding school site at Pasir Ris Street 21 this year, we wanted to establish good relationships with our neighbours. Hence the theme led us to take action in establishing a positive relationship, apply learned skills for social good, and sustain good relationships in the neighbourhood.

This year, Hai Sing Catholic School played host to visitors from Fukuoka Kaisei Girls’ Senior High School. Interestingly, they are our sister FMM school in Japan and they are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. Hai Sing also had the privilege of hosting delegates from the Philippines who were in Singapore to compete in the World Skills ASEAN Competition, held in conjunction with the ECG Fair.

Our Sec 1 to 3 students were treated to an alumni-powered edition of Hai Sing World of Work (WoW), our school’s very own Education and Career Guidance assembly talk series. Our speakers shared about their journeys and helped our students link their present interests (e.g. creating content on social media) to jobs (news producer-presenter). It was most heartening to hear that what drives our alumni in their volunteering, army and work experiences was the opportunity to strengthen those they work with, to bring people together and to make a positive dent on society. Earlier in the year, two of our Parent Volunteers also graciously gave of their time to be guest speakers for our Education and Career Guidance (ECG) World of Work (WoW) assembly programme - Zoom edition. 86 HAI SING CATHOLIC SCHOOL 2023

The school hosted its first ‘Breakfast with my Cher’ session on 16 September 2023. The event was meant to connect retired teachers with our alumni and provide the space for them to reminisce their old days in school and rekindle memories. It was heartening to see many happy faces as they met their old friends and teachers. We certainly hope more can participate in our future alumni events. #Onehaising

As part of our signature post exam Hai Experiential Week, our Secondary One students visited various places of interest to learn more about local history and geography. These learning journeys provided authentic and rich learning experiences that engaged our HAIsians. The experiences also allowed them to make connections between broad concepts learned in the classroom and our local context. Our HAIsians thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

The English Language and Literature department is dedicated to fostering a holistic learning experience through a variety of experiential learning programmes. These initiatives aim to transcend traditional classroom boundaries and provide students with authentic opportunities to apply their language skills. Students engaged in captivating learning journeys that include cultural and theatre appreciation, participation in competitions, attendance at writer’s festivals, motion art jamming sessions, and visits to museums for immersive experiences. These activities not only enhanced language proficiency but also cultivated a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural and artistic dimensions of language and literature. One notable aspect of these programmes is the incorporation of photojournalism, allowing students to document their experiences and reflections, creating a dynamic and enriching learning environment. 94 HAI SING CATHOLIC SCHOOL 2023

On 16 November, Hai Sing Catholic staff celebrated the end of the year with a Tea-riffic Afternoon HAI Tea buffet at Peppermint Restaurant, Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay. Instead of the usual annual staff dinner, the Staff Welfare Committee decided to organise something different this year with a simple high tea get together where staff performed some songs and danced to entertain each other and bond over food. There were also lucky draw prizes and presentation of awards and certificates to acknowledge the good work done by staff throughout 2023. We also bade farewell to some staff who would begin their new adventures either at a new workplace or after retirement.

In the area of professional development at HSC in 2023, teachers came together weekly at PLT meetings to discuss area of focus and came up with effective strategies that they could implement in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning. This eventually culminates in the sharing of the various pedagogies by the teachers for the teachers at the two Professional Learning Days which took place at the end of each semester.

To end the school year, HSC staff came together for a food hunt adventure on 3 November 2023 at Marina Square. Organised by Griness, staff were divided into teams and went on a food hunt challenge and mystery challenges for a friendly competition. The objectives of the activity are to enhance team building among staff, to boost staff morale and to bond through shared fun experiences. Indeed, we had a great time bonding with staff from the various departments which was followed by a department lunch.

HAIsians and teachers had an incredible time at this year’s Teachers’ Day celebration. The day started with Father Venus (Church of Divine Mercy) giving a special blessing to the teachers and staff. We were entertained by amazing performances by both teachers and students, and the quiz was a blast, testing HAIsians’ knowledge about their teachers. It was also heartwarming to see ex-students returning to visit. It was a meaningful day that reminded us of the special bonds we share.

Games Day is one of the sporting events organised for all students by the PE Department. The purpose of Games Day is to provide our students an opportunity to take part in competitive sports. It also aims to promote active lifestyle, sportsmanship and fair play. The students represent their respective classes to compete in a wide variety of sports such as basketball, football, floorball, and boccia which caters to a wide spectrum of students. Through the participation in the games, the students also forge closer bonds within the class and build camaraderie among them.

It provides rich learning experiences outside the classroom that can help our students develop resilience and ruggedness. It also builds the social cohesiveness and support structure among the students.

Father Peter of the Church of Divine Mercy graced this service with a sharing about being thankful and fulfilling personal responsibility. Next, the class chairpersons represented their classmates in the lighting of the candles. School staff also represented their different departments in the lighting of the Thanksgiving candles.
