n June, I always tell myself that this will be the summer that I leave for the beach and never return, vowing to a life of all-year tans and mojitos. Fast forward to September though, and here I am stuck behind my computer.

I’m still sipping on that mojito, though!

The fall is a great time in Bergen County.The humidity calms down; the leaves begin to change; and there are plenty of holidays and reasons to celebrate with friends and family. I could live without all the traffic, but, hey, you can’t have it all.

One of my favorite parts of the fall is, of course, the fashion. For our fashion spread in this issue, we teamed up with the wonderful Hartly Fashions in Westwood for some awe-inspiring looks sure to have you strutting your stuff like the models at New York Fashion Week. This spread, however, has a cuddly twist to it. Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in Oakland is one of the county’s premier animal shelters, and their many adoptable dogs made for the perfect accessory to our beautiful ladies posing with them.We will be honest – half the time the pups stole the show. One even went home with our photographer that very day!

You can’t bring up September without the chaos that surrounds the kids going back to school.This year, though, with the help of Ramsey-based app Share911, parents can

feel better knowing there are more tools being put to use than ever to ensure their children’s safety.

Another reason we love fall is the return of football! I love that the family gathers at my house

to watch the N.Y. Jets ultimately lose, but at least in September there’s usually still some hope that this will finally be their year. Whether that will happen is yet to be seen, but in the meantime organizations are using the fact that MetLife Stadium is in our backyard to create unique fundraisers for great causes. One such group

While my summer bod was ready to go come June, since then, all the hamburgers and hot dogs I enjoyed since have made me turn my fitness routine on high once again.This issue, we welcome Michelle DeSantis and her local blog,The Bergen Skinny, as she breaks down some of Bergen’s best fitness destinations.

As the leaves begin to change and fall and my pumpkin spice latte has me feeling all

sorts of cozy and comfortable, I think about how much Bergen County has changed since we began this journey in the fall of 2001. Maybe some of the shops are different and there are food trucks just about everywhere, but over the years the almost million

Turns Tragedy Into Inspiration

urning tragedy into inspiration, 15-year-old high school freshman Julia Stuart is determined to share her message after being a victim of a drunk driving incident.

Two years ago, at 13 years old, Stuart had been attending a barbeque at a friend’s house the Sunday before Memorial Day in Mahwah. Walking on the long driveway, she had no idea how quickly her life was about to change. As her father was pulling into the driveway to pick her up, Julia’s friend’s father, who had been drinking throughout the day, got into his Mustang and hit the gas. Julia became trapped between the two cars, her leg shattered and her father’s car totaled.

Her friend’s father was urged by his friend to go so that no one would know he had been drinking and driving. He ran into the house, changed and returned back to the scene, Julia on the ground still. Her friend’s father was charged with drinking and driving and served a minor sentence, according to Julia’s mother, Victoria. From the accident, Julia had a year of therapy, then a surgery, which was followed by further therapy.

“It being a friend and a family barbeque and basically in their driveway, it can really happen anywhere and, unfortunately, you just have to be aware of people drinking,” Victoria said. “She was 13 at the time. She’s no longer friends with the girl. She’d really like to be; the dad never apologized or acknowledged her or anything from the whole thing. It’s unique that it was her good friend and not just some random driver in the street. You trust your kids to be at someone’s home and watch out for them and I don’t know, whenever I have other kids here, I’m on top of them more, making sure they’re okay.”

Throughout the healing process, Julia was plagued with negative thoughts, wondering why this happened to her, but finding Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) this past year helped to turn her spirits around and helped her find a positive spin on the tragic events.

“I went to a therapist and my mom has talked to me and my dad and I thought about it, and I think I’m really lucky because when it first happened, it all happened so fast, so after it happened, I was thankful I was still here,” Julia said.

Julia and her mother had been aware of MADD before Julia’s accident, but it wasn’t until Victoria’s friend connected them to Steven Benvenisti, who has been involved with both MADD New Jersey and MADD National for 20 years, that Julia truly began to heal.

When Benvenisti was 21 years old on spring break in Daytona Beach, Fla., a repeat-offender drunk driver struck him as he was walking. In the middle of the night, his parents were contacted to consent to his organ donation and doctors informed them that, based on the level of coma he was in, there was almost no chance of survival. His legs had also been shattered. After two weeks, however, Benvenisti awoke, but he had short- and long-term memory problems and they believed he would lose both his legs.

“There is no cure for the type of damage I sustained, so I was alone. I made a pledge in the hospital back then that if there was a way, in spite of what said in the medical literature for me, to have a 100 percent full recovery from all my injuries that I would spend the rest of my life doing everything I could to end drunk driving because a drunk driver did this to me,” he said. “After almost half a year in the hospital, 15 surgeries and extensive rehab, I was blessed with a 100 percent recovery. In support of the pledge I made, I now speak to tens of thousands of students every year asking them to make a pledge.”

Now a personal injury attorney determined to help victims of drunk drivers, as well as a partner at Davis, Saperstein and Salomon, Benvenisti not only shares his story all over the world, but he also authored “Spring Break: A True Story of Hope and Determination” to spread his message further.

Upon meeting, Benvenisti and Julia had an instant connection, and after sharing that she too would like to write her own book, Benvenisti suggested she come with him to speak at schools. “[When he asked her, Julia] said, ‘People will maybe understand more from me.’ You know at the age group, with BC The Mag FALL 2018 27

going to prom and graduation and all the kids starting to drink and starting to drive and go to parties, and she’s like, ‘I think it could be more impactful coming from someone their age rather than a fifty-something year old man,’” Victoria said. “She went to Livingston High School and the response we got was overwhelming.There were 550 students there and parents’ emails and letters and just the positive feedback and just everything was good for her to help and for her healing. She wants to make a difference; she really wants to do that. She’s definitely going to try to do something with this to help so it doesn’t happen to someone else.”

Looking back at her first talk to a student audience, Julia, while nervous, was proud to share her message. She hopes to be able to make an impact on those who hear her tale.

“I was freaking out,” Julia said.“I’m not good in front of crowds – even at schools. I get very weird when we have to present for classes, but I was so happy to be doing it, and I think I got my message across when I told everyone. It felt really good. I got so many people coming up to me saying what I’m doing is really good and I’m just happy I got something positive out of the whole situation and not just lived with negativity. Benvenisti admired Julia’s strength and confidence when sharing her story.

“Julia is the only teen that I’ve ever come across in my entire 20-year career as a personal injury attorney and in my capacity as a member of the board of directors in MADD National who has been able to not only comfortably, although it’s difficult emotionally, talk about her experience as a victim of drunk driving, but she wants to make sure what happened to her doesn’t happen to other people,” Benvenisti said. “It’s so admirable that someone her age can have Steven Benvenisti has made a full recovery, despite doctors initially believing otherwise. the maturity and the compassion to want to make sure that what happened to her doesn’t happen to other people. If you were to see her speak before one of the student audiences, when she speaks, every student in the audience is hearing the story from one of their peers. You can literally hear a pin drop, and what she does is she explains what she went through. I could not think of something that’s more innocent than a young teen, 13 years old, just going to a friend’s house and then her friend’s dad got drunk and crashed into her. It’s horrific, and I’m so grateful she survived. I’m even more grateful she’s able to tell her story in such a constructive way that has the impact of saving lives.”

While Julia does still suffer pains in her knee, she is pushing forward. She has even been able to rejoin the lacrosse team, only now she has to wear a brace. She is very focused though on sharing her story. Her goals were to set up an awareness club for drinking and driving at her school, but she had been unable to after the principal did not respond to her request. Still, she joined the MADD panels and continues to speak at different schools.

Through all the obstacles and trials faced in her recovery, Julia has powered through and only continued to grow stronger.

“I’m proud of her because she’s so young and really wants to make something good come out of all of this somehow and help someone,” said Victoria. “She spoke at a MADD panel. It was all parents and teachers and superintendents and lawyers and some victims who were older, and she’s a little quiet and shy, but she’s very personable, so she has that social aspect about her that she gets her point through.”

Looking to the future, Julia plans to continue to spread her message as far as possible. She hopes to continue sharing her stories through college too until she eventually writes her own book to share her story with a wider audience. Her goal is to prevent this from happening to others and to show people going through what she experienced that everything will get better, she said.

“I want people to know anything can happen,” Julia said. “It doesn’t matter where you are or timing; stuff can happen, positive or negative. I feel like by letting other people know or by going to school or telling people what happened, them hearing it from a 15-year-old girl is something they wouldn’t expect, and that’s what I like. I remember after it happened, I felt the worst of things, but things got better, and I feel like in life, there’s situations you don’t like or wouldn’t expect, but there’s always going to be that part where things get better.”

‘The Greatest Drug’

L

iving a real-life dream come true, musician Sherma Andrews, of Ridgewood, is working to bring people together with the gift of music.

Starting at the young age of 4-anda-half in Trinidad, Andrews always knew she was meant for a life of music. That Christmas, she received an accordion, and after her rendition of “Joy to the World,” everyone surrounding her was sure of her talents.

“It felt normal, and then I realized like, ‘Oh, why is everyone looking at me, just 'cause I’m 4-and-a-half, playing the accordion? That’s not a big deal.’ But that was special, and I later found out I had perfect pitch and that I was a child prodigy,” she said.

By seven, she had started playing the organ at her church, her feet barely able to reach the pedals. She then moved onto singing, and that’s where she found her passion.

“It was just something that made me feel happy and natural and being on stage isn’t scary for me,” Andrews said.

“It felt like the most comfortable to me. I don’t know why, but I’m so happy and comfortable doing music.”

Her career began there. With her love of singing stemmed from growing up in a musical family, Andrews began singing for parties, weddings and other types of events. Then, another opportunity was presented to her: a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston. From there, she moved onto teaching at Berklee after she had graduated.

By Tara DeLorenzo With her brother’s encouragement too, Andrews also began to dabble in songwriting, putting her stories to melody. And with that, she was able to take her career to new heights.

“Then, I went on tour with Enrique Iglesias and, on that tour, I met Whitney Houston. I filled in for Whitney Houston. Also, my songwriting won the Caribbean Song Festival. All these great things were happening to me, and it

just kept going from there. I met some great people; it’s a lot of fun seeing that people are actually enjoying what I do, not just me enjoying what I do, but others too. I love it, and it’s really cool to have that experience,” she said.

Her songs have also been featured on soap operas like The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Andrews’ first album “Guilty” was

released in 2016 with influences stemming from Valerie Simpson and Whitney Houston and a sound Andrews described as a mix of pop, R&B and jazz. Additionally, she has performed at multiple venues, including the Cape Cod Jazz Festival, one of her favorite venues, as well as the B.B. King Blues Club. She also loves performing around the Ridgewood area.

Andrews further developed a show called “The Legendary Lady Singers,” a tribute to the strong women influences that have affected her life and her career.

“Valerie Simpson is an amazing star. She wrote ‘I’m Every Woman,’ and that song is just how I feel because there’s so many influences in my life, like all the different singers, and that’s why I developed the show called The Legendary Lady Singer because the show is exactly what I am; I am a mixture of all these people because I grew listening to them,” Andrews said.

“I grew up listening to Sade; I grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald; I grew up listening to Whitney Houston, but when it came to Valerie Simpson, I listened to her singing, beautiful, I listened to her art, her writing and I would say that’s who I look up to the most because I love how great she wrote.

High Enough.’ They were a powerful couple, Ashford and Simpson, and I would listen to her music on the radio and every Thursday at the Sugar Bar on 72nd Street, I can go in and say ‘hi’ to her. That’s how crazy it is,” she continued. “People take that for granted, but this is someone I love and looked up to, but I can call her up now. It’s amazing. I am just so happy that I can do that and say Valerie Simpson is a friend, and I love her and she’s not just someone I look up to or emulate, but she’s someone I can call a friend. It’s crazy. This is my dream come true.”

This show itself has become what Andrews is most proud of in her career.What it represents to her is strength of women and their musical influences. Throughout it, she describes the influence and sings the legendary singers’ songs with her own twist. The audience’s response has been very welcoming to her too.

“I think honestly knowing that this show that I developed from my heart is actually being received so warmly by my audience [is my proudest moment],” she said.

“Every time I perform it, they want to see it again and again. Just knowing my baby,

The Legendary Lady Singer, is causing a little raucous in the community is wonderful and I can say, ‘Wow, this is my baby and it’s something I put together.’ Hearing applause when I sing my original songs at my show… it’s all about the performance for me, like when I’m actually performing my original songs and my show. It’s the best feeling in the world. I’ve received great awards; I’ve sang at CitiField; I’ve done really huge things but knowing my show is well received is amazing to me.”

Another valuable aspect to her career is philanthropy, something her mother made sure to instill in her family. Growing up, as part of a family of six kids, Andrews said while they may not have had much, they had the spirit of giving. Andrews carries that spirit heavily in her career, with the help of Ro Sorce, a board member at Hackensack Children’s Hospital. Each year, with a group of friends, Sorce helps set up visits for Andrews and her friends to come in to help with the sick children and cancer patients. Andrews performs for them, and she has dedicated herself to sharing her gift and her generosity.

“It’s about that spirit of giving,” she said.

“That has always been me, so even on stage, whenever I am on stage, that’s what I do. It’s about me giving a great melody or song to move someone to make them feel happy or uplifted. That’s what I’ve always been about and it’s mainly because I grew up with a church and a beautiful, giving mother and father who filled me how to love people and how to care for people.”

Her goal with her music is the same as her charity. She hopes her messages of hope and her love of music come through to her audience. Andrews is looking to continue to share her Legendary Lady Singers show and share her original songs as well.

“Music is a glue,” Andrews said. “Music brings people together.

Music makes you forget about your issues and problems. It is the greatest drug. When I perform, my audience gets transformed.

They start dancing and singing. It’s a lot of fun. Of course, while I do this too, I hope it reaches people in a deep way. I hope people can lose themselves in my music and they can enjoy it. I’m hoping I can still – I want to keep my giving spirit because that’s who I am. So, as my career grows, I want to continue that giving spirit too.”

Andrews most recently played two shows in Ridgewood in early September. She has an upcoming performance at The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College of New Jersey on March 16, 2019 at 8 p.m.

PURSUES DREAMS

F

or Tenafly couple Gabrielle and Dan Reiser, being hands-on parents to their four sons is their top priority. But, in spite of the time commitment that full-time parenthood entails, they are both pursuing their dreams that are fueled by their passions that were sparked early on in their lives.

For Gabrielle, it is running marathons, and for Dan, it is acting.

Gabrielle started running track and cross-country in high school, and continued while attending Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y. After she graduated, 44 BC The Mag FALL 2018

she ran recreationally until she was 27 years old and decided to run her first marathon in Dublin, Ireland in 2001. “I ran that race and I loved it. I caught the bug,� Gabrielle, a Garden State Track Club member, said.

A year after she ran the 2003 New York City Marathon, Gabrielle married Dan and they started their family. Sickness during pregnancies and a sprained ankle in between the births of their sons prevented Gabrielle from running in races, so she decided to only run recreationally.

After taking about 10 years off from

competing, Gabrielle ran the Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, Pa. and improved her time by 22 minutes, which qualified her for the Boston Marathon the next two years. However, due to a foot injury, she was only able to compete in the 2018 Boston Marathon.

But, training for a marathon is difficult, especially as a parent to four young children with busy schedules. For Gabrielle, a typical training schedule would consist of running six days a week. Weekday training sessions would require five- to eight-mile long runs,

whereas weekend runs would range from 16 to 20 miles. Despite the challenge of maintaining a balance, Gabrielle is still able to focus on her love for running.

“It’s something not just physical. It’s also mental,” she said, “It gives me that break. It’s my therapy. It’s my moment of just [letting] loose…it brings me strength.”

Now, Gabrielle is hoping to compete in the 2019 Boston Marathon, as well as some shorter races. And, while she runs for herself, she has made it a priority to keep the rest of her family healthy and active.

In addition to running with her sons and competing in local races with them and her husband, Gabrielle is an avid blogger. After discovering that her eldest son has sensitivities to milk, eggs, soy and peanuts, as well as the gene for celiac disease, Gabrielle started doing research to create recipes that her son – and countless others with dietary restrictions – could eat. And thus, the start of her cooking and running blog, “Run, Cook, Laugh,” was born.

“I decided that maybe there is someone out there like me who’s looking for some help, some advice,” Gabrielle said.

“So, I started writing about my recipes, why I chose the recipes, what the ingredients are [and] why the ingredients are healthy.”

“I think we all have passions in life and, sometimes, life kind of takes them away,” said Dan Reiser of Tenafly. “It’s so important [to] never give up on those dreams.”

While maintaining this blog, Gabrielle aims to inspire her children to eat healthy, while encouraging them to be a part of the project.

Her husband, Dan, said, “She would have the kids involved with the pictures, setting up the food…it was like a family endeavor.”

Like Gabrielle, Dan is an ardent runner.

While he also competes in marathons, his main passion lies in the arts.

Although he is currently the director of Leasing, Property Management, Acquisitions and Marketing at Gabrielle’s father’s real estate company, Panepinto Properties, in Jersey City, Dan started his career in acting.

What started with an acting class during Dan’s freshman year of high school transformed into a passion. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University, Dan started his own production company, DDR Productions. Using this platform, Dan acted, directed and produced various plays. He also worked as an extra in Scent of a Women, My Secret Identity and Sliders.

But, after meeting Gabrielle, Dan went back to NYU to get a degree in real estate because he said knew how unpredictable an acting profession could be and wanted to expand his horizons.

“The acting industry requires long days, long hours to really pursue it the right way. It takes time away from those that you love,” Dan said.

For the past 12 years, Dan has been responsible for the day-to-day management, public relations and branding of Panepinto Properties.

But, inspired by his wife’s ability to follow her passions, while raising their children, Dan decided to do the same.

Gabrielle’s friend, Stacey Van Gorder, wrote, produced and acted in 3.5, a film based on actual events that follow a family shattered by the choices of a mother suffering from postpartum depression.

Van Gorder was holding auditions for a male role, and after being unable to find someone to play the part, Dan decided to present himself. Using the knowledge he learned while

studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute at NYU, Dan honed in on elements of method acting by trying to become one with the character.

After receiving positive feedback on his audition, Dan was asked to audition once more until he solidified his role as an actor in the film. The film has been accepted in the Cannes Short Film Corner, a sister festival to the main festival in Cannes, France, which took place in May. Dan said, “I think in the acting profession, if it’s a passion of yours, if it’s something you really want to go for, the

onus is upon you to kind of make that happen, to showcase the talent and passion that you have…bringing out those expressive and artistic elements.”

Although Dan has not officially agreed to do other films, he has been looking at other scripts and is hoping to fulfill his decades-old dream of forming another production company. He looks to continue on a path filled with both real estate and artistic exposure, while still

being a hands-on father alongside Gabrielle, showing their children that they can do anything they aspire to do.

“I think we all have passions in life and, sometimes, life kind of takes them away,” Dan said. “It’s so important [to] never give up on those dreams.”

The Tailgate With A Cause SECTION

Raises Funds Through Its Love of Football

W

hat began as eight friends, a football and a card table at an average tailgate quickly transformed into a full-fledged charity as a group of friends in Section 16H of the Meadowlands parking lot in 2003 decided they could turn their pre-game into working for a cause.

Thus, the Section 16H Group was founded.

While the venue may have changed now that the N.Y. Giants play at MetLife Stadium, the tailgate continues, and each year, the party grows and a new charity to donate to is chosen. This year, the event, which will happen Sept. 30 at 1 p.m., will benefit Custodes Libertatis Memorial Foundation.

The group itself is described as friends from industry, college and life-long friends that rallied behind causes. With its founders coming from all different industries, the men were able to build a network that grew their party from eight to 800900 attendees. While their own tailgate has been

going since 2003, it was in 2005 that they decided they could do more. It was in that year that member Dr. Brian Wraith’s uncle passed from brain cancer. The members raised a small amount of money and gave the donations to Wraith’s uncle’s widow.

From there, they decided they wanted to make more of a difference. Wraith and the other founders were able to get a non-for-profit status after creating their company, and then filed to be a public status. Section 16H Group is now a 501(c)(3) charity that helps to support different charities each year. The key to it all, agreed members Wraith, Dr. Mark Goldstein and celebrity chef Josh Capon, is their bond to each other.

“I really think the friendships we have can’t be minimized when we talk about the charities because the friendships drove the charity and now the charity drives our friendship in that it’s very easy to stay close to someone you have respect for when you work shoulder-to-shoulder with

them in charitable endeavors. The other things is, I get choked up even thinking about it, but I never thought – I always daydreamed about it – that a bunch a guys from humble beginnings could actually run a charity and impact people’s lives,” Wraith said. “I don’t want to have a ton of us patting ourselves on the back, but it happens to a degree, and it’s an amazing, amazing experience as a human being to help other people.”

Past tailgates have helped charities such as The Riley Sandler Foundation, the Sarcoma Foundation and the Cys-

tic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as organizations like the American Cancer Society. Charities are chosen by the group, with each member getting a vote and input. Their only hope is the cause they decide on is one close to their hearts.

“We want to be connected to these people in some fashion, either a neighbor or someone that has impacted our life, or a coworker, or someone along those lines,” Wraith said. “We want it to be connected to us, and we’re all very connected to each other. Every one of us has had some modicum of success, so we’re not looking to be compensated. It’s just our way of giving back, and we get to throw a kick-ass party that’s a lot of fun.”

The party itself is, as Capon said, “It’s not just one of the

greatest parties of all time, it’s the greatest tailgate of all time for a great cause.” Stocked with five fully stocked bars with top-shelf liquor, food that includes Kobe beef, lamb chops, sushi and products from Bowery Meat Co., as well as a DJ to help kick off the tailgate and a gaming center for kids to be able to play video games, there is something for everyone.

In part, it’s able to come together with the help of the members’ skillsets as well as their own individual backgrounds and networks.

“This started as a bunch of guys that were just there to have a good football toss and poker game; that was the genesis of this whole thing, and we all realized we have networks,” Goldstein said. “Two of the founding fathers are partners in the Tao Group in New York City, and they had their tentacles in everything. Dr. Wraith owns physical medical centers and gyms in the area, as do I, and Josh is a

celebrity chef. With all our contacts, it became a kind of movement, and now it’s this amazing party that everyone who goes is there to party. Everyone is dressed down, and it’s an eclectic mix of people with no judgement and a lot of money raised and an amazing party with the most insane food ever. Chef Capon and the Tao Group is there. No one has ever left saying this isn’t the most insane tailgate I’ve ever been to.”

The event has now been a staple in the men’s lives, and, while they barely make it to the game with all the work that goes into the event, the group is very grateful for the cooperation provided by MetLife Stadium and the N.Y. Giants.

“I think the whole day is special,” Capon said. “It’s one of our favorite days of the year, but there is a moment where we do present to someone in the organization. It’s a big check, and it’s not about the money, it’s about the connections we made. I have an email on

my wall from Riley Sander’s dad, and it’s a memento. I’ll never forget that moment where we were chanting her name in the parking lot, there wasn’t a dry eye in the parking lot, and her symbol was a pair of bunny ears. It almost felt like everyone at the game was wearing bunny ears. I have to say it was probably 1/1000 but it felt like everywhere you looked, there wear bunny ears. No one makes a dollar or takes a dime, it’s just charity work. In life, you are going to figure out how to give back. The world is getting to be a really nasty place, and you have to figure how to give back, and it keeps us together too. It’s a ton of work for all of us. It’s great.”

Moving forward, Section 16H Group wants to an even bigger difference. Not one of the members are compensated for their efforts, and while they originally never imagined it would grow to this level, they now have trouble seeing it as anything smaller. Their goals now include making their own programs and

seeing how far they can take their charity.

“I guess when we were throwing the football around, we had no idea we would have 800-900 people and we would have board meetings about how we would divvy up the money,” Wraith said. “Now, we’re happy with the success we’ve had, but we want to do more.

The next step for us would be to initiate our own program so we can help the community and not be the conduit for another charity, but actually set up our own programs that directly impact the public.”

Their goal for the charity and the tailgate, mainly, is to make a difference while making sure everyone is having the best time possible. They are not looking for a somber event, but one that celebrates the people and makes an impact.

“We have a certain skill set, a certain work ethic, and we’ve had help and we’ve gotten lucky,” Wraith said. “It’s a

combination of anything that’s good, all those ingredients are there.

There’s some skill, there’s some hard work and there’s some luck, and I think one important thing to remember is we’re a humble group of people and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re a humble group of guys working together. Mark, Josh and I are your neighbors. We’re the guys picking up the free newspaper from their driveways, asking about the kids. We want to help people and we are helping

people. In some regards, we’re ordinary guys who want to help people and we’re pulling it off.”

Goldstein concurred and is proud of the work they have been able to achieve.

“We’re playing to our strengths; we

have access to things that not everyone has,” Goldstein said. “It’s a lightning-in-a-bottle combination; we all add to it to some capacity. We’re a charitable team. This is not rocket science; this is life is good and not everyone has it as good, so let’s level the playing field a little and do what we can. Life is good, so enough with the frowns and let’s have some fun.”

The Ramsey-Based App That’s Changing School Security

et again the question “How can we make our schools safer?” was on the tip of everyone’s tongues following the Feb. 14 school shooting at Parkland, Fla.’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The tragic event left the families of the 17 children whose lives were lost grieving as well as the Florida community and the greater United States.

While politicians called for metal detectors, armed teachers and stronger gun laws, Ramsey’s Erik Endress already had an answer: an app.

As a volunteer firefighter for 30 years and someone who had spent a majority of his career in technology, Endress has always been one to help people. It was only natural that his next step would involve technology to do so.

This led to a conversation with Ray Bailey, a retired Ramsey police officer, about how they could use technology to improve the emergency communication system in their town. Access to the right tools and resources existed – iPads and smartphones in schools and in the hands of officers, but none of it was being used in an emergency. Endress then met Adrian Lanning, a software developer,

who was confident he could build the program.

Thus, Share911 was created. Endress compares the app to Uber. The same way you can order a car, you can initiate a school lockdown, shelter in place or immediate evacuation while simultaneously notifying the police.

Their first version of the app was launched in 2012, two weeks after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown Conn., with Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale as their first customer.

Since then, the app has been implemented in schools all across America.

Though the idea stemmed from school safety, Share911 is also used at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and their corresponding 85 facilities, as well as The Mall at Short Hills in Short Hills and St.

Joseph’s Church in Oradell.

A basic version is offered for free, but an upgraded version with additional features is sold for $3 a month per employee. The added features include the ability for teachers and administrators to report if a student is missing, whether they are in danger or safe, and their exact location based on a check-in system specific to the school’s floor plan.

In one word, it’s efficient. When alerted, first responders know exactly where they need to go and who they’re looking for.

“Like Waze [the world’s largest community based traffic and navigation app], it shows you things that are on your way to your destination. If you’re in a school lockdown, your destination is safety and this is going to show you where safety is,” said Endress.

He acknowledges that he doesn’t have the ability to stop an intruder, but he can empower people with the information they need, which can ultimately make the difference in saving someone’s life.

“The power of our system is the speed at which we contact everybody that needs to be notified,” said Bailey.

Bailey does admit, however, that it’s been challenging to convince people

that there’s a better way to communicate in an emergency.

“For a long time, people were told to dial 911 and wait for the police to arrive.

Our system notifies everybody instantly and then provides information back to everybody. We all know it’s going to take the police several minutes to get there so use this information to get yourself safe,” said Bailey.

Both Endress and Bailey are heavily invested in making sure their clients are comfortable using the app. During the first year they launched, they were at every drill that took place to ensure nothing went wrong. Further, if a live event is to occur (they would know since they receive every alert), both of them stop what they’re doing to make sure things go accordingly. Trainings are administered and videos and resource documents are sent out. Endress says he’s even acquired quite a few frequent flyer

“We deliver ridiculously high customer service,” he said.

bility that he has to the students and teachers. He’s aware that there’s a certain amount of pressure he takes on each time he’s introduced to a new school.

“I’ve often had teachers start crying when they see it for the first time. I’ve had teachers introduce me to their class and the kids get up and start clapping.

This is not professional development software; this is not Google Docs.

This is a teacher walking into a classroom saying, ‘Boys and girls, this is the man that invented a software that we’re going to use when your life is on the line.’ Learning how to react in those situations has been the biggest challenge for me.”

perintendent of Ramsey Public School District, only has positive things to say about Share911. He describes it as “innovative and ahead of its time.”

“I can’t speak enough about the integrity behind the company and its purpose,” said Murphy. It’s a product that all school districts, or any organization with large groups of people, should at least look into.”

From a law enforcement perspective, it has helped her get information out quickly.

As for the future of Share911, both Bailey and Endress would like to see it expand within communities.

“While we’re heavy in schools, there are a lot of other buildings within a community that we can connect – a large public library, municipal buildings, etc.,” said Bailey.

There’s no doubt that their number one goal is to help people, even when it may come at a financial cost. This is evident in their decision to donate the software to certain schools, particularly ones in poorer areas who may not be able to afford it.

“I wish every school in America could have this software,” said Endress.

“If there’s a frustration, it’s that more people aren’t using it.”

f you’re anything like me, your heart longs for fall fashion.

Fall is definitely the favorite season of many. It is the season that showcases beautiful foliage and stylish outfits, after all.

This season’s trends are all about familiar patterns, colors and past trends. If you are timid to try on new trends, then fear not! This year’s fall fashion will be a season everyone will be able to pull off.

From iconic British heritage looks to the revival of the eighties, 2018’s fall fashion is all about classics with an edge. The following trends are very wearable, and yes can be worn anytime – even out to lunch.

Animal Print

Whether it was python, zebra, cheetah or leopard, animal prints roamed the runways from New York to Milan. You may be asking, “Really, animal prints again?” Animal prints are timeless yet statement making. So, if you don’t already own a piece of animal mania, you must do so this season.

Plaid

I don’t know if the marriage of Meghan Markle to Prince Harry may have anything to do with this next trend, but herringbone tweeds, glen plaid and checks are going to be a huge trend this fall. These patterns are classic, elegant and something most everyone is sure to love. To give them a little edge, you will see that mixing the patterns from head-to-toe will be the trend. Tailoring will also be the key to make these pieces look per-

fect. When wearing plaid, mix it with feminine pieces, such as bit of jewelry; wear a bold lip; and keep your hair looking effortless. Let the fabric standout while you look flawless.

Western Wear

Saddle up, everyone; the Wild West is back with a vengeance. Cowboy characteristics will definitely be popping up as part of this season’s fall trend. Whether it is a prairie dress, stand out yoke details, rustic metal belts or your cap toes boots, all the major designers from Versace to Hermes and Coach are showcasing their Wild West fashions.

Eighties

Power shoulders, oversized ruffles and ruching fabric will once again reign supreme. If you didn’t have the opportunity to get to rock the

look back in the day, now is your time. The difference in this reincarnation of the eighties trend has to do with the type of fabric choices used. Think neon, foil and shimmer. Nothing will be understated.

Gucci, Stella McCartney and Saint Laurent have all embraced the trend. But don’t feel left out if these brands are not within your price points, brands such as Michael Kors and Zara will all take part in this season’s fall fashion trend.

Layering

Designers showcased their Fall/Winter 2018 collections with most of their models wearing multiple layers. Whether it be one coat layered with another one over it, multiple shirts layered over one another or adding a turtleneck to your summer slip dress, this season is all about volume.

Luxurious Leather

Leather seems to be the dominant fabric choice this season – a trend that we continue to see most every year. Leather jackets, leather tops, leather pants, leather dresses – you name it. Leather will be all over this fall.

Gregory is a 1-year-old Italian Greyhound and Chihuahua mix. At first Gregory acts scared, but once he gets to know you, he is energetic and playful. He loves and needs exercising and really wants to be trained.

They are considered chic in ready-to-wear pieces.The fishnet trend is still strong from spring. Update it for the fall season by wearing them in nude with a feminine dress. Grab a pair of slouch boots in soft leather to complete any outfit.

Think athletic sneaker smashed with a bootie, creating a luxury hybrid. These chunky “kickers” are less for running and more for mixing up your shoe choices.

Pair them with a dress or skirt. Every designer has created several pairs of thick soles with heavy leather in boxy silhouettes that go far past the ankle.

Although not up for adoption, BC The Mag decided to shine a spotlight on Virginia, a sweet girl that is one of the bright stars of the shelter. She has been named “Chief Dog Trainer.”

Virginia helps all the new dog intakes with their training. She is also a source of calmness for scared pups.

Put A Scarf On It.

One key accessory that emerged on the runway that will be strong on the “realway” is the silk scarf. Use a scarf as a belt, bag straps or a neckpiece on a sweater.You can even tie a scarf to a purse.

Go Big Or Go Home.

This statement resigns supreme when selecting eyewear and earrings. Ditch the tiny cat eye sunglasses and look over an oversized pair. With regards to earrings, look for heavy chandeliers, rhinestones, metals and bold color.

Bonus points if your earrings sweep the shoulders. Even better, ditch one and just sport a large dangler paired with a stud in the other ear.

Chance, a 1-year-old Border Collie/Pit Bull mix, does not want to grow up in a kennel. He is active, happy and very playful. He would thoroughly enjoy going hiking, jogging and car rides with his human companion. After, he would enjoy a long nap on the couch with you. Go clear this season. Designers created diaphanous pieces leaving little to the imagination.Think plastic, sci-fi iridescent fabrics and shinny metallic.This trend is not for the faint at heart; however, the trend is more approachable then you think. Discussing Concussions

As the school year begins and fall sports gear up to full speed, enough cannot be said about concussions: What they are; how to recognize one; what to do when an athlete has one; and how to prevent them.

What is a concussion?

Concussions in athletes at all levels – from professional to high school – have been all over the news every year. Not surprisingly, concussions are a relatively common occurrence in sports. An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year.

High school athletes suffer thousands of concussions every year. Most often concussions occur during football, ice hockey and soccer. Among high school athletes, concussions are most often caused by contact with an opponent, a teammate, the ground or a piece of equipment or object in the playing

area. In organized high school sports, concussions occur more often in contact sports, with football accounting for more than 60 percent of concussions. For males, the leading cause of high school sports concussion is football; for females, the leading cause of high school sports concussion is soccer.

Among children and youth, ages 5-18 years, the five leading sports or recreational activities which account for concussions include bicycling, football, basketball, playground activities and soccer.

Concussions do not always involve being “knocked out” or a loss of consciousness. A concussion occurs whenever an athlete’s mental status changes as a result of trauma (usually a blow to the head). A child who

shows signs of mental confusion or is “dinged” by a blow to the head has, by definition, suffered a concussion. A concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to either the head or the body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. A concussion changes how the brain normally functions.

Concussions can have serious and longterm health effects; therefore, even a seemingly mild “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious.

Signs and symptoms of concussion include headache, nausea, fatigue, confusion or memory problems, sleep disturbances and/or mood changes. Symptoms are typi-

cally noticed right after the injury, but some might not be recognized until days or weeks later.

What happens after a sports-related concussion?

Sports-related concussions often result in mental and physical symptoms, such as inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, headache, fatigue and dizziness. For many athletes, the symptoms disappear after about 10 days. They typically hardly ever last more than several months. In some cases though, concussions lead to persistent complaints of physical, mental, emotional and behavioral symptoms, sometimes referred to as post-concussion syndrome. We do not know whether persistent post-concussive symptoms result from primarily medical or psychological causes. In rare cases, when repeated concussions occur over a brief interval, athletes may suffer from second impact syndrome, a pathological response of the brain that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Parents should seek care-

ful evaluation and management of any sports-related concussion.

How should a sports-related concussion be evaluated?

Concussions are typically managed according to their severity. Immediately after a concussion, medical evaluation is needed to determine a child’s vital signs and level of consciousness and to rule out any other injuries, such as those to the spine. Recent guidelines indicate that a hospital emergency department should evaluate any child who loses consciousness as a result of trauma during a sporting event.

In cases of less severe concussion, athletes are typically evaluated on site rather than in hospital emergency departments.

There are a variety of approaches to the “sideline” assessment of concussion.

Guidelines are also available to assist in deciding when a child is ready to return to play after a concussion. Presently most recommendations strongly advise against return to play on the day of injury. High school

athletes’ recovery times for a sports concussion are longer than college athletes' recovery times.

High school athletes who sustain a concussion are three times more likely to sustain a second concussion. Lack of proper diagnosis and management of concussion may result in serious long-term consequences, or risk of coma or death.

Because of the potential long-term consequences of sports concussion, it is important that athletes, coaches and parents know as much as possible about how to recognize a concussion when it occurs.

Symptoms are not always obvious. Although it is commonly assumed that concussions cause loss of consciousness, many people with concussions have not been “knocked out.”

Concussion causes a variety of symptoms. These may appear right away, or may be delayed for several days after the injury.

Some symptoms are physical, such as drowsiness. Others are cognitive, like memory loss. In many cases, people with concussions are more emotional than usual.

The most common symptoms of concussion include: • Drowsiness • Headache • Loss of consciousness • Memory loss • Irritability • Confusion • Balance problems, dizziness • Difficulty speaking and communicating • Depression • Nausea and vomiting • Changes in sleep patterns

Can neuropsychological assessment help?

Because it is difficult to determine when a concussion has fully healed, baseline neurocognitive evaluation is an important tool for assessing whether it is safe for an athlete to return to play. Before the sports season starts, each athlete takes a computerized test that measures brain functions, such as memory and reaction time. If an athlete later has a concussion, post-injury tests can be compared to the baseline evaluation to measure the severity of the concussion and help doctors monitor healing.

In addition, pre-season evaluations can help identify athletes who have had previous, unrecognized concussions and who are at risk for repeat concussions. For example, past injuries to the face or neck may have been accompanied by an unrecognized concussion.

Neuropsychological assessment is widely regarded as the most sensitive way of detecting disturbances in brain function associated with concussion. The National Football League and the National Hockey League have both instituted systematic programs of neuropsychological testing, as have many colleges.

Athletes are administered brief tests of attention, memory and speed of information processing before the season. Athletes who sustain concussions are tested again, typically within 48 hours of the injury and at regular intervals afterward. Recovery to baseline levels of performance is typically

required before athletes are allowed to return to play. Similar cooperative programs can be instituted for organized athletic programs at the high school level. In the absence of programmatic testing, athletes who complain of persistent post-concussive symptoms should be considered for a more comprehensive neuropsychologic evaluation.

What can be done to prevent or treat concussions?

Changes in the rules for athletic competition have reduced the number of sports-related concussions. After the National Collegiate Athletic Association made the use of the head when tackling illegal in 1976, the annual number of head and neck injuries in football declined by about 50 percent. The required use of helmets in many contact sports and advances in helmet design also has resulted in fewer head injuries. Improved conditioning of young athletes, especially strengthening of neck muscles, may also help to prevent concussions. The key to healing from a concussion is complete rest. This includes not just physical rest, but mental rest, as well. Reading, computer work, video games and television should be limited until all symptoms have

resolved. This typically takes 7 to 10 days, although some people have symptoms for weeks or months after the injury.

Once you are free of symptoms, you can gradually return to physical and mental activity. It is important to slowly return to daily activities because being symptom-free does not mean the brain injury has fully healed. Your doctor may recommend a step-by-step program: first add an activity, then monitor your symptoms. If your symptoms do not return, you can continue increasing the challenges.

This slow, steady approach typically reduces the time spent away from school, work, and athletics because it provides enough time for the injury to heal. Diving back into activities as soon as your symptoms have resolved can bring them back on and require a return to complete rest.

If a child sustains a concussion, parents should seek appropriate medical care. They should request a description of symptoms indicative of worsening brain injury and of common post-concussive symptoms, as well as guidelines for return to play and for medical

follow-up. For athletes who experience persistent difficulties after a concussion, such as headaches, difficulty concentrating, irritability, sleep disturbances, or dropping grades, an effective treatment plan will often combine education, cognitive rehabilitation, psychological support and, in some cases, medication.

Getting back into the game too soon puts you at risk for another concussion. If you suffer a repeat concussion before your first concussion has healed, it may take much longer for your symptoms to resolve and you may have long-term problems, such as learning difficulties or chronic headaches. Although it rarely happens, repeat concussion can cause permanent brain damage and even death.

In 2010, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that young athletes with concussions be evaluated and cleared by a doctor before returning to sports. The American Academy of Neurology issued a similar statement and stressed that doctors who clear athletes for return to sports should be trained in managing and assessing sports concussions.

Although injury prevention begins with proper equipment, there is no such thing as a concussion-proof helmet or mouthguard.

Young athletes must be trained in safe sports technique and to follow the rules of the game. In addition, rule changes should be considered in sports where force is delivered head first. This not only promotes fair play, but also protects both participants.

In order to get back into the game, most athletes will downplay their symptoms. Understanding the long lasting consequences of repeat concussion is an important part of prevention. Several medical and sports organizations have recently developed concussion awareness programs for athletes, coaches and parents. These educational programs play a critical role in helping to recognize concussions and prevent repeat injury.

The Convertible We Should All Aspire

To Own?

henever I am in California, it’s always nice to have a convertible at my disposal. There’s a reason why the Ford Mustang Convertible is one of the most commonly chosen vehicles in the golden state’s rental lots. People want to enjoy the wind in their hair.

But, to be honest, I am a bit more discriminating when it comes to my vehicle selection.

That’s why for my latest trip to the San Francisco Bay Area I chose the Mercedes-Benz E400 Convertible. There’s several reasons for this: First, I was looking for a more comfortoriented ride; second, I was looking for something very fresh and new; thirdly, I wanted something that’s top of mind for you, the readers. In 2018, the E-Class has been a hot car. So, is it really all its cranked up to be?

Taking delivery of the E400 at SFO’s Park ’N Fly, I approached the silver drop top realizing a couple things. Largely, the E-Class Convertible is actually bigger than you suspect. Its sleek and elegant lines tend to hide its actual size. You can actually fit four adults in this coupe. Also, this vehicle has a very high beltline, which is paired with a rather small greenhouse. Not only does this provide a

By Richard Posluszny cocoon-like environment for passengers, it also gives the vehicle’s overall exterior design a more modern and sleek look. To me, the EClass Convertible has an awful lot in common with the Bentley Continental GTC – this is a good thing.

Kudos to Mercedes for optioning my test vehicle with a red soft top. It’s so choice.

Getting more comfortable in the leather driver’s seat, this is where I think the E-Class makes its strongest case. That’s because it’s tough to top the E’s interior when it comes to execution. The high-quality trim, metal accents and two large, 12-inch displays make it a force to be reckoned with. Equipping a convertible with a soft top is always a bit hit or miss; however, the three-pointed star has taken some impressive measures to ensure that the cabin remains quiet when the roof is in use. Unlike other soft tops, this one does an excellent job of sealing the cockpit so you do not experience excessive wind noise at speed. Thanks to a multi-layered construction, you can have a normal-level conversation with your passengers and there’s no need to strain your vocal cords.

This can’t be said for all soft-top convertibles.

Of course, the real fun begins when you lower the roof. That’s because you get to expe-

rience California at its finest.

But if you’re not like me with the windows down and fully enjoying the wind, you can leverage Mercedes’ technology to minimize how much you’ll have to adjust and fix your hairdo when you arrive at your destination.

That’s because Mercedes has what it calls AIRCAP. Essentially, it is an integrated, electric wind deflector built into the roof frame so that it can be deployed. When put into position, the aim is to minimize how much wind fills the cabin. Paired with this is a power-operated wind blocker between the rear headrests. Although my use of the system was minimal, I did try it out around town and at highway speed. During errands in Sausalito there was benefit at normal speed; however, on the freeway it didn’t help much at all.

Another trick addition is AIRSCARF. Mercedes has been equipping its convertibles with this for years now but it always leaves me tickled when I get to experience it. As the pioneer of this technology, the three-pointed star has built venting into the head rests/seating so that when the temperatures drop – as they tend to during the evening hours in the Bay Area – you can circulate warm air around your neck as you motor along. Driving along with the top down and windows up along the bay never felt so sublime. Honestly, I wish this were an option on all cars. AIRSCARF is better than having a heated seat.

This means you can enjoy the E400 in two ways with the top down. You can have the traditional convertible experience with a lot of wind and fun, or you can opt to have a more isolated experience. This translates to a convertible that has greater utility than others in the market.

This brings me to the driving experience. As this is a standard Mercedes product, it skews towards the luxury side. While it has sporting intentions, do not get it twisted: This is a boulevard cruiser. This is reflected in just about all of the E400’s driving dynamics. It’s not too much or too little of anything.

The E is “just right.”

Equipped with a 3.0-liter, bi-turbo six-cylinder engine, the E400 4MATIC Convertible I piloted produces 329 horsepower and 354 lb.ft. of torque. Paired up with a nine-speed automatic transmission, zero to 60 happens in about 5.3 seconds. It’s not lightning fast but it certainly won’t leave you fretting about merging onto a highway. One would simply say it’s “adequate.” NOTE: For the 2019 model year, the E400 becomes the E450 and it gets a bit more power.

you like. During my time with the vehicle I found Comfort and Sport to fit the E400 best.

With Eco dialed in, the car felt lethargic, at best, and when you switched to Sport+ the motor and transmission just weren’t feeling like they weren’t working in harmony.

Driving through downtown San Francisco, which doesn’t have ideal pavement, gave me some perspective on the E-Class Cabriolet’s suspension. Whether in Comfort or Sport mode, I found the E400 to absorb imperfections rather impressively. Although it can get shaky in many drop tops, this isn’t the case with the Mercedes. During my time with the vehicle I didn’t encounter any peculiar vibrations coming through the steering column or chassis.

Where the E400 Convertible may surprise you though is with its steering. Although it is not tuned to provide you with a communicative experience, the weighting is spot on. Not too heavy nor too light, it’s ideally set up for working your way through windy, country roads. Don’t get too excited though: The E400’s body has some roll to it. Remember, it is not a purpose-built sports car as it is, ideally, a cruiser.

I have to admit. After spending time with the E400 Cabriolet, I had difficulty finding things I didn’t like. In fact, I really couldn’t spot anything that was objectively a miss. All in, the E’s a rather impressive package. From the high-resolution rear camera to the wellbuilt soft top to Mercedes striking the right

balance with the vehicle all around, there’s a whole lot to like.

Well, except one thing. The as-tested price of the E400 Cabriolet was $85,735. While I typically find myself defending automakers – when it comes to pricing – as prices climb due to an increase of safety features and additional technologies, there’s something about this particular vehicle that seems a bit off-putting to me. I’d be fine spending $70,000-75,000 on an E400 Cabriolet but the closer it gets to $90,000 the more my eyes start to wander. If you try to find an apt competitor though, it’s difficult. That’s because no one vehicle really squares up against the E-Class Convertible.

I guess one could surmise that it’s in a class of its own.

In one day, America’s Playground added two hotels/casinos. Long standing as empty relics of what Atlantic City once was, their re-openings marked a big step forward in revitalizing a city that only years ago was a city on the brink of total financial ruin. As the fireworks flew over the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino marking its grand opening, it felt, at least for that moment, like Atlantic City was back.

If you walked the north end of Atlantic City’s boardwalk just two years ago, it was a depressing reminder of our country’s financial woes and changing lifestyles. Atlantic City had rapidly shuttered casinos and those that remained open often reminded me of visiting my grandmother’s smoke-soaked apartment, where even she had given up the casino floor to puff away at her Marlboro Reds whilst sitting in her night gown playing online poker.

It seemed like Atlantic City might never return, yet here we are, watching Pitbull perform in the Hard Rock’s beautiful arena to the tune of a sold out (and intimate) 7,500 fans. For the ownership of Hard Rock, it was a dream only an impossible year in the making.

When “two guys from Jersey,” as they called themselves, got together with Hard Rock International, a dream to transform the dusty old Trump Taj Mahal into a spectacle of entertainment and hospitality that Hard Rock’s around BC The Mag FALL 2018 107

the world had become known for was born.

“I was walking the boardwalk one morning,” recalls Jack Morris, “and it was just a sad place to be. Atlantic City was hurting, and I knew that we could help. I called up my friend Jim Allen (another Jersey boy who happens to be chairman of Hard Rock International), and knew there was something we could do. A year later, here we are.”

And, here I was, sitting in front of a packed press conference with “the Jersey boys” – Jack Morris, Joseph Jingoli and Jim Allen, along with the Seminole Tribe of Florida who owns Hard Rock International – announce that this $500 million renovation project was complete. Right at that moment, you could feel the energy return to the city.

As you drive up to the valet of the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, you quickly realize that they didn’t just throw a coat of paint on an existing building. The miraculous transformation from the Taj, which Donald Trump once called the “eighth wonder of the world,” to the new Hard Rock is astounding. The entryway is grandiose, but in a subtly sophisticated way, rather than the typical glitzy Trump way. Of course, a signature Hard Rock guitar shoots some 50 feet in the air, marking your arrival to what is now most likely New Jersey’s largest collection of music memorabilia – from Elvis’ Cadillac to all things Bruce Springsteen and some of Nicki Minaj’s more unique wardrobe choices.

It was clear that the team behind the new hotel and casino had seen Atlantic City’s plight. No longer was a hotel going to survive just off of gambling. With that, Hard Rock Atlantic City took the “America’s Playground” moniker to a whole new level.

Early Fall Fun

know you’re asking yourself why is Linda’s List talking about early fall fun? Well, the answer is simple: we all had our summer fun and now it’s time for fall fun. The summer always seems to pass so quickly. I just love September; it’s actually one of my favorite months. While I’m sure children returning to school aren’t very happy to see September return, most Moms must be jumping for joy. I, for one, am so thrilled that Bergen County offers so many great things to do once the weather starts cooling off. Further, anyone who knows me knows I hate to drive so I’m thrilled that there is so much to do without me having to leave

Bergen County. When this Barba goes beyond Bergen I am very fortunate to have my very dear friend Tatyana that loves to drive. I fondly refer to her as “Tuber.” Come on; let’s go have some fun.

I just love apples, so off we go to Demarest Farms (244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale). Who said apple picking is just for kids? Wow, what great views and well manicured trees. Decisions, decisions – I just hate making decisions on which apples to pick. There are 14 varieties of pick your own apples here. I think I’m in apple heaven! I’m not leaving without some homemade apple cider.

We grabbed some herb crusted roasted pork and roasted broccoli in the deli and it was simply delish. Some fun notes on the farm is the current owners started working on the farm as teenagers and Mrs. Demarest, when she got up in age, sold it to them rather than to developers to preserve the farm.

I’m sure glad she did! Put this spot on your bucket list.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say there’s nothing better than outdoor dining. It’s a beautiful night as there’s a slight breeze and the city view is crystal clear. Tonight’s dinner spot is Joe’s Crab Shack (541 River Road, Edgewater). A bottle of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay and the cedar-roasted salmon will do.

The salmon was on their extensive gluten-free menu. I live vicariously through my friends because of my food allergies, and their consensus was don’t leave Joe’s without trying the key lime pie. Yummy is the only word that kept coming out of their mouths between bites. I have to say, for a chain restaurant, Joe’s has really good food and, of course, the view always takes my breath away.

It’s “Sunday Funday” and the living is easy. Did I mention how great the weather is? How about brunch at Stony Hill Inn (231 Polifly Road, Hackensack)? Do I have lunch or breakfast? I don’t know about you ladies but I’m off

to the carving station and the salads.

Being the great friends that they are, when I return my glass of champagne is waiting for me. Are you sure this buffet is only $38 per person? It is incredible.

What an awesome selection and the food never disappoints.

If you know me, it’s no secret that I love wine – red or white, as long as it’s dry and not sweet. In order to be my friend, you must like wine. We have wineries right here in Bergen County.

I’m psyched. My goal is to visit them all.

So stay tuned! Let me tell you about my first find: Tomasello Winery at Abma’s Farm (700 Lawins Road, Wyckoff). Dan could not have been nicer when I called to inquire on the telephone. He took my reservation for my bestie and I for 2 p.m. since it takes about 39-40 minutes for two people to sample eight 1 oz. pours.

Of course, we chose the $15 Riedel glass for our tasting. We are serious tasters!

My favorites were the cab, merlot, pinot noir and chardonnay. They produce approximately 47 wines right here in Hammonton, N.J. Well, that was fun. I can’t leave without a bottle or two! The wine prices are very reasonable.

Let’s hurry. We can make Capital Grille (1 Garden State Plaza, Paramus) for their lunch special, which ends at 4 p.m. I know what I’m having, and I knew T would have the same. We both love salmon and salad. After we give the no butter and dairy spiel, the chef sends our dishes out sans butter or dairy. We are two very happy besties. The bartender asks, “Do you ladies want something to drink?” I answer with, “Have you met us?” Of course we have a vino or two.

I can’t believe all of this is only $20. We scratch our heads and both laugh. Our bar bill is always more money than our food bill.

Dan DeMiglio’s Recapturing the American Dream

f you ever had the opportunity to watch The Founder, you’ll notice the eccentric and big vision Ray Kroc teaming up with the McDonald brothers: brilliant inventors and perfectionists who put quality over profit, and the true originators of “fast food” as we know it today.

The McDonald brothers’ burger operation was already booming in 1950s Southern California when Kroc, a struggling milkshake spinner salesman, first took notice. From there, a partnership was born, where Kroc franchised the McDonald’s brand across the country, eventually pushing the McDonalds and their values out, and becoming the hundred billion dollar picture of the American entrepreneurial spirit we see on every street corner today.

Around that same time in 1950, Ida and Leonard “Artie” Castrianni were converting a small snack

shack in Fort Lee into the first Callahan’s Hot Dogs. It was a Bergen County institution, having served generations of locals that, upon its closing in 2006, left an empty place in our hearts and stomachs.

Then, there’s Dan DeMiglio. After spending years working for the NBA until the 2011 lock out left him permanently locked out, the grandson of Artie and Ida took a shot at opening his own restaurant. The Bouwerie, a simple, moderately priced American restaurant, opened up within the bounds of Old Tappan Golf Course and DeMiglio’s collision course with his Callahan’s destiny had begun.

Unfortunately, as DeMiglio will now

tell you, opening up a restaurant on a golf course doesn’t bode well for business about half the year when nobody is golfing, as well as on rainy days when people aren’t thinking about eating at a golf course.

Although the Bouwerie proved a humbling challenge for DeMiglio, there were lessons learned. One, it’s important who you work with. While at the Bouwerie, DeMiglio began work-

ing with Chef Danny Fabian, an incredibly hard working and ingenious chef who was always thinking of new and creative menu items. DeMiglio and Chef Fabian formed a strong bond: Fabian was creating the food, and DeMiglio could give it a catchy name and sell it to the masses. Sound familiar? The partnership between the two is stronger than ever, as Chef Fabian has been DeMiglio’s right hand

man through every single day of Callahan’s Hot Dog’s 2.0 – but we will get to that.

The Bouwerie also taught DeMiglio to take the good with the bad. Although his relationship with Chef Fabian blossomed, his relationship with his business partner soured, creating a divide that ultimately led to the closing of the Bouwerie in 2014. We all have that dream of opening a restaurant with our good friends.

DeMiglio offered the friendly reminder of “not so fast.”

An even more important lesson, however, was that DeMiglio could never escape his family’s Callahan’s legacy. Patrons of the Bouwerie, as well as friends and strangers DeMiglio came across, would always ask him, “When are you going to open up a Callahan’s Hot Dogs?”

Finally, it was time for DeMiglio to give the people what they wanted.

“When I first pitched the idea to my family and Chef Fabian, who I wanted

He orders his menu item sans bacon, which, while sitting across from the local King of Hot Dogs, struck me as odd.

“Tell me you’re vegan,” I quipped, knowing full well there was just no possible way.

DeMiglio laughed, “Hell no! But when you’re making truffle gouda bacon mac and cheese day in and day out, sometimes you just don’t want to be around it for a couple hours.”

Speaking with DeMiglio for just a few minutes, he reminds me a lot of

Kroc portrayed in The Founder by Michael Keaton. While he’s there with me telling his story, I can tell he’s also thinking about his next sensational menu item, sure to go viral much like his World Famous Stuffed Mac n’ Cheese Ball Burger. I’m not sure which came first: labeling it “World Famous” or it becoming so, with posts and videos of the oozing burger delight exceeding the multi-million “views” mark.

Like Kroc, DeMiglio is a big picture guy with the eccentricity to make you a “Callahan’s Kid” without ever even biting into one of the nine-inch hot dogs that started it all in 1950, igniting the excitement of the kid inside all of us despite whatever age we may have

been.

DeMiglio’s eccentric conviction eventually wore both his family and Chef Fabian down, and “The Beast,” the Callahan’s Hot Dog food truck that re-launched the iconic local brand, began rolling through the county streets in 2014. The rising popularity of food trucks along with the excitement surrounding the return of Callahan’s propelled the newly formed business to heights nobody saw coming, “Except for me,” DeMiglio says laughingly with that excited twinkle in his eye.

A year later to the outpouring of thousands of “Callahan’s Kids,” the name aptly chosen by DeMiglio for fans of all ages of the iconic brand, DeMiglio cut the ribbon on a small storefront in Norwood, literally re-cementing Callahan’s place in Bergen County’s heart.

Unlike Kroc, who essentially stole the idea of McDonald’s from its namesake brothers and for a long while

said it was his idea, DeMiglio is both humble and gracious.

“I couldn’t do it without my team, without my parent’s support, without all the people cheering us on day after day,” DeMiglio admits. “I owe so much to all of them, it’s what drives me to continue on this path and continue to evolve.”

Callahan’s is far more than hot dogs now, as DeMiglio continues venturing further to give Callahan’s Kids what they want: original, delicious and fun items. Much to DeMiglio’s credit, these new items are often social media eye candy, which DeMiglio has utilized to amass a hefty following that gets the inside scoop on all of Callahan’s next moves.

“I’ll walk into the kitchen one morning and there’s Chef Fabian. I look to see what he’s up to and next thing I BC The Mag FALL 2018 119

know there’s Cap’n Crunch cereal breading on a chicken breast, it’s drenched in a sriracha honey glaze and sitting on toasted white bread, and the Cap’n Crunch Fried Chicken Burger is born,” DeMiglio recounts. “I don’t know how he comes up with these things but [Chef] Danny is just so talented and always thinks outside the box.”

Besides Chef Fabian, there are several others who have been with DeMiglio from Day One. Fabian’s girlfriend, Kenia Figueroa, who is GM for 120 BC The Mag FALL 2018

the food trucks, and Edwin Villatoro, the sous chef, have watched from behind the scenes as the meteoric rise of Callahan’s continues. DeMiglio also never overlooks the wisdom and guidance from his parents, Ron and Linda, whose father began Callahan’s.

Their experience having worked in the original Callahan’s doesn’t hurt either.

Such has been the continuing success story of DeMiglio and the Callahan’s brand. There are now three trucks in addition to the retail location, a permanent residence at Van Saun Park, millions of social views and followers, and as hungry as Callahan’s Kids are for more, so too is DeMiglio.

The future is bright for Callahan’s as DeMiglio finds himself in the unique position where opportunities seek him out.

“There are a lot of great things coming for Callahan’s,” DeMiglio says. He then proceeded with that signature smile, “but all of that is off the record for now!”

Just a few weeks ago, you could’ve spotted DeMiglio on News 12 New Jersey, flinging some new items and

some classics with the enthusiasm and energy of a 1950s’ Kroc. He’s also appeared on Food Network, and this past summer, Callahan's was a nationwide sensation once again as the Travel Channel took a bite out of their “Now & Tater” Burger, named aptly for its outside of the box homemade tater tot bun.

The story only continues to get better for DeMiglio, and if you have the opportunity to spend 10 minutes with him, it’s easy to see why. DeMiglio breaks every stereotype of the “Millennial.” He might be one of the hardest working people you’ll come across, and his love for what he’s doing is infectious. He’s constantly bombarded with requests (It took me months just to get an interview with this local celeb), and his private catering business has also taken off. What’s better than a famed hot dog to kick off wedding after-parties? With the constant notoriety and incredible demand come the stresses of owning a business, but he takes everything in stride. Trying to keep the Callahan’s Kids full, and yet hungry for more isn’t easy, but this third generation (re)founder of Callahan’s Hot Dogs is more than up to the task.

ood. It’s what fuels us, literally.

Gone are the days where the good ‘ole PB&J does the trick or you head to the local burger joint and get a cheeseburger with French fries and a milkshake. Instead, these days, you might have a mini slider hanging off your milkshake, served in a tall glass with who knows what else accompanying it. Maybe there’s some alcohol in the shake. Maybe a couple fries for dipping or who even knows anymore – some general Tso’s that perfectly compliments your soy saucehoney-ginger matcha milkshake with icecream made from the dairy excretions of cows who only eat sushi. It’s 2018. This might not be real, but then again, somewhere, it might be.

The food craze has pulled us in all sorts of directions, most of which I cannot even keep track of. Frankly, it burns too many calories to even try, and my low-cal, only eat on even numbered hours and minutes with no dairy, protein or grains diet really has my fine tuned-body running as efficiently as possible. Who knew that the byproduct of such an obviously medically backed diet would be constant fatigue?

This, however, isn’t meant to be about my diet plight or my inability to keep up with the latest diet craze. I’m fat and love food, and that’s OK. I work out to enjoy it.

This rant, however, is about how crazy food has become.

I often voice my thoughts about how social media has seeped into many aspects of our society, and the food craze is no different. I have friends who make their money taking pictures of food, and I commend them. For the most part, they are thin and in shape too, so I commend them even further. But that got me thinking – maybe they aren’t really eating that cheeseburger with two cheesecakes acting as buns. Maybe it’s all for show. Probably, it tastes like shit.

I’ve scolded (while also handing my hard earned money) to Taco Bell for being the farthest thing from Mexican food, while also being delicious and incredibly creative.

However, amongst the culinary community, the Bell is rarely recognized for being light years ahead of every restaurant that now makes a sushi pizza or has the courage to put mac and cheese in a sandwich. Taco Bell has been making up menu items forever in the hope of “going viral” while the only shots these food Instagrammers were taking were green poops into their diapers

– thanks in part, to the Taco Bell tacos grandma got them. Thanks, Grandma!

Remember the tough times, when that 3 a.m. visit to the local diner had you torn between the nachos and the disco fries?

Well, don’t worry about that anymore, because there are now places where you can get nacho disco fries.You heard it here first, ladies and gentleman. It’s a plate full of fries and nachos and cheese and gravy. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll find it on top of a pizza.

You can pile stuff on top of a pizza and just pick it up and shove it in your mouth. Pepperoni and cheese? What are you, 90 years old? We put cheeseburgers on our pizza now.We put full salads.We put French fries.

We put lasagna on it.All of this is happening around us – yet the war on PB&J continues to wage on. The world has gone mad.

I ordered a Bloody Mary in the city once and I swore I had to eat more of it than drink it.There was a full buffet sticking out of the thing. By the time I actually go to the section with the vodka, I was in a food coma. This was before I ordered my Eggs Benedict, which, of course, was a Guacamole and Chorizo Eggs Benedict with honey chipotle lime sauce. After all of this (and three Pepto tablets), I felt disgusted and defeated. But it received 131 likes on Instagram!
