Torque Converter How it Works A torque converter is a device that converts rotational power into linear motion. It is used in a variety of applications, including automotive and industrial equipment. There are two main types: the automatic type and the semiautomatic (called a clutch-to-clutch converter). The basic function of the automatic type is to transmit engine power to the transmission through the input shaft. The automatic converter works automatically when the vehicle is in motion. It typically contains two or three clutches and a stator assembly which transforms the engine's rotary power into smooth, low-speed linear output motion. The semi-automatic converter is similar in design to an automatic converter, but it performs the conversion process manually when the operator shifts gears or engages the clutch pedal. It contains one clutch and one or more friction bands that transmit engine power to the transmission through different mechanisms, depending on the type of converter used. When the engine is idling, the converter switches to its freewheel mode, which allows it to act as a mechanical brake for the transmission. It also prevents the wheel from turning when the accelerator pedal is released.

Torque converter works as an intermediary between an internal combustion engine and a gearbox in vehicles like trucks, buses, and construction machinery. In these applications, they are used to provide the proper amount of power to meet the requirements of the equipment. They act as an interface between the engine and the transmission by converting the power generated by the engine into useable rotation.
