Introduction
Digital Playground began in 2005 in South Korea as Digital Media Art Festival showcasing city promotion exhibitions from Eujongbu city. Since then this event has evolved to include workshops and exhibitions whereby 2007 marked the first installment of Digital Playground headed by the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul. Subsequent Digital Playground events, namely Digital Playground 2008 – Hack the City and Digital Playground 2009 –Open Your Source generated huge success and attracted fans in media art in Korea that the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Soongsil University and Chungang University of Korea turned Digital Playground into an international project by choosing Kota Kinabalu as the venue and collaborating with Kolej Yayasan Sabah, thus the annual project Playground in Island was born.
In the first year 2010, over 30 Korean artists came to Kota Kinabalu showcasing interactive media art and conducting different workshops in collaboration with Kolej Yayasan Sabah. Local people, especially students and teachers at Kolej Yayasan Sabah, were exposed to digital technology and media art. They also had the opportunity to work and learn alongside Korean artists and digital specialists.
In 2011, the Sabah Computer Society and the Sabah State Library were privileged to team up with KolejYayasan Sabah as the local partners for Playground in Island 2011 Such collaboration with Korea resulted in the introduction of new concepts and emerging technologies in digital media to Sabah.
Playground in Island 2012 is slated to be even bigger and bolder by reaching out to the general public on the awareness of new digital media in the day-by-day life and the application of these technologies in the civil and public sectors as we move towards the new digital Media age. Playground in Island 2012 intends to broaden its spectrum by diversifying into media art exhibition, public art project, workshops, and film and animation screening projects.

Bit/Beat 2012
Bit/Beat, People could partake in the interactive process to play music or sounds suing sensors. tried to describe the complex workings of individuals and the society via the sounds. A person’s monologue is plain to hear but multiple people taking part in the interactive activity will generate sounds closer to music. Most of my works do not just stop at inducing interactions with viewers but strive for esthetic actions. propose the viewing attitudes for the audience, so the viewers look at the art work and other viewers who come to see the work. My work makes use of physical actions of the viewers rather than utilizing screens for images because I am interested in viewers’ esthetic appreciation derived from physical perception, not the appreciation through immersion.

Laws of time and space are broken by hallucination which alters the sense of time and space. In this art-work the hallucination creates a coexistence relation between reality and fiction. The potential space created from this relation is the interaction itself. Approaching the object creates interaction, which results in wind, blown from the object towards the user. The art-work is created from 18 computer fans which are connected in shape of a sphere. There are 3 infra-red motion sensors which detect if something approaches the sphere. The sphere itself is covered with a fake-fur fabric which allows the wind to pass through.

Meditation I + N Author(step): Gina K Year/ Time & Format:
The image of bar codes that alternates leaf bars and black bars in the works of GINA KIM tells that it is the destiny of existence that birth and death alternates continuously in such repetitions.
Simultaneously, the works earn the effects of horizontal expansion by alternating the vertical image of leaves and black bars. This means that the vertical desire toward the eternity of life extends to horizontal understanding of lives. Making harmony with eliminating the confrontation between nature and artificiality, is this the original identity of human beings as universe, life, and nature?

In the past media art work which dement only the contemplation to the audience like the old analog paintings, there is no media artistic reproducing and the artistic method what we pursue in 21th century. The modern technology in our century is advanced further and spread into the inspiration of the painting with my work. The background is colored city and flowers blossomed by viewer’s interaction from cold and pale gray image of city. The screen turns into night view, according to the interaction of the audience petals are gathered for the fireworks The first occurrence of monochrome image of a cold, gray city is expressing of the cold impersonality of some modern cities. To change the screen as the flowers are painted in colors means like a fairy tale in which warm, wonderful and beautiful city of flowers and looking at a new beginning and hope Flowers are enjoying the fireworks and hold their own party all was asleep at night.

Slow face fast
Author(step): Unzi KIM
Year/ Time & Format: 2012
Time seems to move faster when the body uses senses to operate an efficient process to accept the visual stimulus. On the other hand, we tend to analyze and comprehend the image slowly when the image is necessary for survival or stirs emotions. The world we live in, a chaotic world, requires the beauty of slow image. The emotional effect of slow and quick makes a natural feeling. Through it, we re-experience the emotion we learned, as deja-vu.
This piece is a single-channel work, but makes a 2-channel effect. With the 3-D screen, we see the projection-mapping effect, and be perceived as a 3-D visual.

Year/ Time & Format: 2012 / 2min. / Moveable acrylic ball(sensors built inside)
A sphere, gets light on all side, makes the atmosphere that seems to be a sculpture which audience shall not touch and not allow to touch it. However, the sphere plays role when it is rolled. Rolling is essential potential of sphere and the audience get closer to the work through physical actions. The sphere makes various sound with rolling at the same time, and it changes interestingly an exhibition space of the existing solemn atmosphere. The humorous sound, when the rolling sphere makes, break a tension between an spectator and work.
The Sphere, its diameter is about 50m, has an micro-controller, an accelerometer sensor and a thin speaker built inside it. If the sphere is rolled like a ball, an accelerometer sensor inside it detects its movements and plays sounds of human voices like laugh sounds and humming through the speaker built in it. And if the sphere is placed on its metal rack, the spotlights around the rack turn on and light up the sphere so the sphere looks like an object for plastic art.

What happens when human emotional words are represented by a color? Emotion words such as Love, Happiness, Hope, Sadness, Joy, Hate, Belief, Excitement in this art-work are being matched and linked with specific colors and so they are represented on the Tree of Emotion. With use of a special Twitter API and Processing these 8-emotional words are being searched along the Twitter network and the results are being progressed. Extracted data is recalculated and presented on the Tree of Emotion as flowers of a matching emotion color. Everything is done in real-time and each calculation is don’t with a 1 minute delay.

find myself through the relationships with the things around me. The existence of subject (me) is only recognized when it comes together with surroundings. These things may refer humans, machines, nature or objects.
My work starts from the point where the audience and work meet trying to understand and compromise. The video projecting a shoal of fish moving in relation to audience’s behavior implies key mechanism of this work which is communication and miscommunication between the subject (me) and surroundings.
This is an interactive video work responding to audience’s body movement but not specified to every gesture (behavior) that people make. The 3D depth camera detects the body movement and the information value is converted into X, Y, Z coordinates which is applied in real time resulting the movement of a shoal of fish on the screen.

Buildings are not easy to chanage its facades cause of its physical characteristic. However 3D projection mapping could create augmented reality on building’s elevation without construction work, and even make big effect cause on its contrast from architectural physical constancy and low variability. The representative limit of projection mapping on building is “time”. It could be held late night , in dark environment, so not easy to join for public especially for childern. “facade project” is planned to show projection mapping to public and children. Target building, <Urban Hive> is selected by its well-kwon feature, and is made into 1/50 model. This work could visit school, kindergarten, public place.

Using processing program and projection mapping technique, doll face will be changed according to movement of the audience.
Using three-dimensional a doll to the screen, the work uses video projection mapping technique as expression methods. This expression overcomes the analog play-acting’s limit and develops new digital play-acting expression methods. Through digital projection mapping face technology, dramatic display can increase audience’s imagination.

This is the video manual version of Okin Collective performance entitled “Operation-For Something Black and Hot”. This operation recalls the nuclear disaster in Fukushima during which the press was controlled and there was a media blackout leading to maximum damage for their citizens. The production of quasi-Chi Gymnastics, based on the motion studies of public drills, was a guide as to what to do during a disaster. The idea was to increase self-defense ability at a time when the government couldn’t protect their people. Okin researched many related official guides. But we were disappointed again by their carelessness and inadequacy - most of them just said repeatedly to calm down; endure; wait; prevention is the best measure; we have to fold a cloth to cover the mouth like a mask sixteen times to prevent hazardous substances from entering; and so on. After all, what Okin choreographed was nothing but a kind of practice on how to make eye contact, to hold your hands with complete strangers, and to depend on each other.

Understanding through digital media
◆ Plan
Using an artist created software interface that controls movements of particles, participants are to experience human relationships and interactions as simplified forces of attraction and repulsion between particles.
The participating students will be in groups of three. Each group will have a laptop and they will learn how to work with ‘Lives as Particles’ program. Then everyone in groups will create different interactions and images of their own.
Please note that the parameters which were to set up for interactions and images must be abstracted in the forms of word and text that one can recognize and must be categorize.
For example,
Do not go beyond given square border lines. Bounce back as hitting the wall. To make a timely and spatial distinction between you and the others, push other particles as it gets close enough to overlap. (Repulsive force) Keep certain proximity to be in one’s sight but not so close to overlap. (Attractive force) Change dimensions periodically as breathe in time.
And this abstraction practice will be expanded to a performance experience.
The outcome will be in the forms of photos, screen shots and videos documenting interactions of particles, parameters and written texts.
◆ Implementation
The classroom was not proper to set up for a group workshop but each one had their own laptop that they can practice individually.
Each particle was designated with the names (real name or nickname) of the participants. This was to motivate participants on an assumption that they can relate the contents of the workshop with self more easily if the particles are of their names.
As prepared, the complete demonstration was given in live coding. And then, step by step examples were given so that the participants can follow. Using Google Chrome browser (https://www.google.com/chrome) tool (https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/), the
LIVES as PARTICLES
participants were allowed to interact and change code that the artist have created.
◆ Critical part of original source code
Operating principles are as follows.
Design particles so as to generate repulsive force if another particle comes within a green circle, and generate attractive force if it comes in between a green and a blue circle. The human relations could be the same. It is hard to have any relationship if the distance with another is too far, and on the other hand, too close distance makes another uncomfortable. A proper distance creates a certain meaning and story.
And the traces of them reveal the flow of various interactions.
This practice was to make participants understand more easily putting their name/nickname.
But the feedbacks from the participants show the content was not delivered completely maybe because of the language barriers and cultural differences.
In general, however, a few insights were delivered certainly.
LIVES as PARTICLES
Experience through physical media + performance
◆ Plan
Designed to expand the ‘experience thorough digital media’, the performance is to be done outside after the sun sets. It will be in a small square or empty lot near a high building where one can take pictures and videos from the top. If it were to take place inside a building, a lobby at the department store or shopping mall with dim light is desired as the space is clear and empty.
Now the participants perform as particles. Following three tests will be done before the actual performance.
Test 1
1. do not speak
2. feel repulsive and attractive forces

3. go around freely
4. as sensing others stopping
5. crump together
6. keep the position for a while
7. and disperse naturally
8. repeat
Test 2
1. recall own humming sound
2. in the test 1 state
3. go around freely as humming
4. as sensing others stopping
5. crump together and make a sound (chord)
6. keep the position for a while
7. as reaching the high note
8. gradually decrease the sound
Test 3
1. recall own humming
2. in the test 2 state
3. the ones who are to stop were selected
4. can tell in due time
5. gather toward the attractive force
6. crump together and make a sound (chord)
7. stop naturally
8. make a circle
In this process, participants will experience how to interact with each other without words and pay more attention to movements and their intentions.
After three tests, participants will gather in small groups sharing their thoughts on the tests.
These three tests are three practices. When the participants are ready, a new medium, LED, is introduced.
The traces of light can be acquired using LED lights in the dark and set up the camera for long exposure.
The trajectory of interactions that participants make as they reorganizing themselves repeatedly in an empty space is traced by the LED hat that they are wearing. This light trace is in connection with those images created from the computer in ‘Experience through digital media’.
30 participants will teamed into three groups and will discuss with which promises they will interact extemporaneously. Once three patterns are set, they will perform without any prior practices. If necessary, the test will be done under bright lights without LED and in the dark wearing LED on their heads.
Everyone performs each of three patterns. (It means following the rules of the other groups as well) If the sound is required, recommend them to use not electronic equipments but natural objects (pebbles, wood, water, etc) or
humming sound of their own voices. Video record every course of actions of the performance.
Conclude the workshop sharing thoughts (about being a particle, interaction experiences, what is experience, thoughts on sense and life, etc). (In case of need, thoughts could be recorded simply.)
◆ Implementation
As planned, the participants were asked to be a particle and make movements according to the few rules.
And each participant made their LED headbands for light traces.
We expected to mix electro engineering medium and natural objects as the workshop was done in the island, and actually there was a chance to collect some natural items around the school area.
Since it was not dark enough to go out, rehearsal was done inside the building with the LED headband, self-organizing according to few rules.
After brief moments of thinking about what we have learned so far and sharing feedbacks, the sun set and we gathered around the empty space and performed.
The performance was a harmony of light, sound, and movement without any conversation with each other carried only through carefully observing others moving and humming with a few simply rules in mind.
I guess it is hard to convey the atmosphere of that actual performance in this printed matter. The workshop was finished with group photos.
The fundamental algorithm that I used for this workshop began in 1997 when I was still a student studying physics. Ever since then, this experience had important influence on me practicing media art. After 15 years, got to go to foreign country with my wife to meet various people and work in different materials and forms which made me look back.
What is the purpose of this work? As what kind of particle do go around the world? And wonder where those particles interacted with me either repulsive or attractive forces will go.
I hope every participant to make great relations leaving their traces wherever they are. And if see this from above, it might look like traces made on the playground where played hard in my childhood.

Overview
The High Altitude Balloon Photography workshop was originally planned to launch the balloon to around 30~40 km and to receive the live stream of the video in real time from the ground. But as Kota Kinabalu is highly congested by air traffics, we needed a permission from the local aviation department, which we’re unable to get while we’re staying. So we decided not to release the balloon but to maneuver the balloon from the ground with strings attached. And we all promised to launch the balloon to high altitude next year.

Preparation
- Video transmission and reception test on the ground
- Permission to release the balloon
- Renting a Helium tank on site
- Charging the batteries
- Check for the balloon launching site
Workshop Day
- Overview of High Altitude Balloon (HAB) Photography
The HAB system was presented to the attendees and the working principles were explained
- Understanding the Buoyancy
To understand the buoyancy of the balloon, attendees were first required to hang a weight that’s equal to the lifting buoyancy of a party balloon.
Later, attendees were grouped in 4 to find a heavier weight that’s equal to the buoyancy of 4 party balloons.
And same experiment for 8 balloons
- Tying the Balloon
To have a buoyancy for the camera module, 8 balloons were now tied to bigger version - 200 party balloons. KYS student - DD was in charge of tying balloons as he had some previous tying experiences.
Minimum of 2 attendees were required to hold the string of the tied balloons at all times to prevent the balloons from being released.
- Washing the Balloon
Due to the heavy rain and wind, tied balloons were keep hitting the ground and covered with dirts. And attendees brought water from the sea and clean the dirts despite many toxic jelly fishes in the sea.
- Assembling the HAB system
After 3 hours of waiting, heavy rain finally started to stop. 100 fresh party balloons were added to give more lift to the wet balloons. All the gears got brought out to the sea shore. The camera module and controlling strings were tied. And launched.
- Controlling the HAB system
One main string was used for hold the entire system. 2 strings were used to balance the system in windy situation. Lastly one string was directly attached to the camera module to control the panning of the camera. We figured, without the camera control sting, the camera module kept spinning.
Review
- Renting a Helium tank was a hard task in KK as they have their own unit and was not possible to calculate the expanded volume of the gas. But it turned out the tank we rented was enough to fill the big 1200g Latex Balloon. So we should rent a same size, same pressurized Helium tank for next year.

A day in Kota Kinabalu
The thing that we call ‘a day’ seems to suggest only ‘time’ but in fact, it also implies ‘space’. When we say ‘a day’ in general, it means a day on earth.
While a day is 24 hours on earth, it is 24 hours and thirty minutes on Mars and 2800 hours on Venus.
And there also are historical and psychological differences in understanding ‘a day’. As a day in New York can’t be the same as the one in Paris, it won’t be the same as KK.
Though we live a day, we do not know what’s happening while we live those days. It is impossible to get hold of a perfect sense of a day, but it will give a better understanding of time and space that we live in as we share the stories of our days together.

Nothing Much Drawing
Artist Hwa Yong KIM
For someone childhood memory of drawing is nothing but awful times whether it is picture diary homework in elementary school or only an hour art class. An art class was to learn how to draw something ‘likely’ or ‘exactly’. This workshop <Nothing Drawing> is intended to take the everyday drawings like simple scribbles made unconsciously and make it a quite an artwork.
This workshop is a series of line drawings. You cannot find anything special from the outcomes. Rather, they are trivial scribbles of little importance. But through this workshop you will get to notice things that you missed and that exist but can’t see, approaching from the other direction in fresh perspectives.
It is of two part drawing mission. For the first one, one need to put up with some limits drawing in different methodology and another one is drawing with unexpected tools. This workshop is designed to be more like a free drawing play than learning for the students who are familiar with general art classes.
1. Draw with eye
- What is a ‘good’ drawing? Does it mean imitating the subject exactly as it is?
In general, a practice of drawing contains a continuous confirmation of self checking whether the ration of the subject is right and the subject is represented relatively positioned to the paper. If it does not go as expected, change and correct. This is the moment to do either quick, simple sketch, or give up the drawing at all.
- Draw on paper but without looking at it.
Let go of the pattern of observe, stop, draw, and observe again. From start to finish, only look at the subject in front or imagined. Close rational eyes that repeat subject and draw only with eyes of intuition.
- Ruined drawing?
The outcome was quite strange. As the students drew not looking at the papers, the proportions and compositions were broken, hindering them from recognizing their own style. And some students who were unskilled in drawing felt finding their own style that they didn’t realize.

2. Draw with foot
- Map VS Actual place
There is a difference between two-dimensional map and three-dimensional actual place. Especially it is more so in least informed map, and the map of Kota Kinnabalu was much simpler than the one of the city. Besides, as outsider it was hard to imagine what the place would look like since the Roadview service is not available.
The day before the workshop, went out to walk different routes with simple map of KK. It was very thrilling experience of feeling the differences between the map and real. The map can be seen differently if you see it after physically experiencing with your own body and feet.
- A line crossing the map
The road on the map is fair. The construction sites, blockages, or level of land was not indicated on the map. As I walk earlier, I realized that there are lots of big construction sites building new structures and it was not easy to pass where many floating homes were concentrated. Also it was hard to cross wide roads since there were only a few crossroads. Without considering all these elements, I drew line on the map. There is no way of knowing whether can actually follow the line that we drew or not. As soon as I show the students somewhat cat like lines that drew on the road from the school to the hotel, they were excited to explain the places with which they are familiar and their usual routes.
- Draw with foot
We went out to walk the lines drew on the map like a maze or puzzle. imagined it to be a time segment performance stretched out to the real space that village becomes a paper and the feet follow the lines that we drew with hands. I explained GPS drawing smart phone application that enables to draw on the map. It seemed it was not a complicated technology for computer animation students or the ones who are interested in smart phones already. Moreover, as these drawings were about the areas that they know best, they were more immersed in talking about various stories.
- New things behind the lines!
As we walk along the lines on the map, we can find things that we missed before. This is to following neither the best nor the shortest lines but wherever it leads us so that we pay more attention to the visual landscape than the regional information. Just walk and then compares whether it is the same path on the map. The village is a paper and the GPS that we carried along was paint or pencil. This is a tool for ‘draw with foot’ documenting my footprint.
Unfortunately, there was a heavy rain shower on a workshop day and we had very short time to walk around when it stopped for a while. But I got a feedback after the workshop through SNS sharing what they have done for themselves and their footprint drawing connected to Google map.
Coming back from a short hours of workshop, I thought it would be more interesting to have a longer play like workshop of ‘Five senses Roadview of KK’. It will includes various programs as walking small islands in KK like GPS drawing, photo documentation, landscape sketch, sound collecting, etc.

Palm line drawing
Studying the line
Take a look at your palm lines that you normally pay no attention to it at all. In Korea, people believe that there is one’s life in your palm. Draw every line you see on your palm except fingers. By drawing every single line blown up in a certain scale, you get to think of your own one-of-a-kind lines.
