2024 2025

ANNIVERSARY SEASON

WELCOME

Welcome to the 30th Season of the Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation (TOCA)! Since its inception, TOCA has ensured that the South Bay has access to high quality culturally enriching experiences. We do this because we believe that the cultural arts are uniquely able to bring us together while also celebrating our differences. My colleagues on the Board of Directors and I are honored to continue the meaningful work that was started by visionary city leaders decades ago when they built the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.

We work in close collaboration with the City of Torrance, private donors, corporate partners, community partners, and our patrons to ensure that our shows are inspiring and accessible to all audiences. Our staff and Board of Directors believe that there is a certain experience that can only be fully enjoyed in a theater, surrounded by others, watching a live performance. Browse our season brochure and you’ll find shows that will make you laugh, cry, think, be inspired, dance in the aisles, and everything in between!

We encourage you to join our mailing list and take advantage of our season subscriber discount. TOCA relies on the financial support from people like you who see the value in our mission, and there are many ways to support us. Consider becoming a volunteer or committing to a one-time or regular monthly donation. The latter is as simple as texting TOCA30 to 44321. TOCA is grateful for the generosity of those who make what we do possible.

We can’t wait to share another season of new and familiar experiences with you!

At a time of celebration like this, we can’t help but look back on all that TOCA has accomplished and impacted. Starting with all the amazing artists, mentorship of young performers, partnerships with local arts organizations, to our friends and audience members who have been with us on this journey.

There are so many people who have helped us get to where we are today. From our staff (Susan & Sharon), graphic designer (Tes Schaff) and video artist (Brian Singer) who’ve worked tirelessly on so many projects including our streaming shows during the pandemic. Our Board of Directors and Advisory Board continue to be an inspiration and beacons of support. Thank you all.

At TOCA, we are committed to providing our patrons a space with unforgettable and accessible cultural experiences. We are proud to offer a diverse range of experiences including music, theatre, dance, comedy and family programming. As always, if there is anything we can do to make your time with us more enjoyable, please let us know by emailing is at info@ torrancearts.org.

See you at the theatre!

Chyna Chuan-Farrell

Chyna Chuan-Farrell has over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry. She began her career as an assistant at ICM Partners, working her way up to become a Concert Agent and later joining the Corporate/Private division. During a six-year break from ICM, she founded her own business, Chyna Entertainment & Design, LLC, where she created and produced events. It was during this time that she discovered a new passion for photography after photographing a friend’s wedding, eventually deciding to pursue it full-time.

Chyna returned to ICM, working again in the Corporate/Private division, where she reconnected with clients and buyers and negotiated deals for talent such as Jay Leno, Boyz II Men, and Howie Mandel, among others. With extensive experience negotiating for Adult Contemporary, R&B, Comedy, and Speaker clients, Chyna tailored deals to meet specific client needs. Drawing from her expertise at ICM, she went on to join APA as Senior Vice President of the Private/Corporate Department. However, due to the pandemic, she was furloughed mid-year.

In early 2021, Chyna joined Paladin Artists, a boutique agency founded by industry veterans. Her role expanded to managing the company and booking a diverse range of clients in the corporate/private sector. Chyna continues to pursue her passion for photography, capturing moments at events, as well as portraits and family sessions.

AI Vibration

Ann, Lynn, Annika, Vivian, and Riko represent the dance school AI Vibration. They are thrilled to have been chosen as SBGT finalists. Today, they will give it their all and showcase the results of their hard work. Please cheer them on as they dance with everything they’ve got!

ASTRA is a group composed of members Ailie, Ayaka, and Aki, who are between 13 and 15 years old. They study street jazz, waacking, hip-hop, and jazz. Krista Chica

Krista Chica, from Whittier, California, is a classically trained musician who studied at the California School of the Arts High School and is currently majoring in music at Rio Hondo College. Krista has been involved in music for as long as she can remember. Music is her passion and, in many ways, her first love. It flows through her, adding color to her life, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Krista continually works to improve and strengthen her technique to become a stronger musician. Her goal is to create music that impacts people and unites them, as she believes music is a universal language that brings everyone together.

Ashley Dowdle

Ashley Dowdle, an Air Force “brat,” moved frequently during her childhood. Born in England, she and her family settled in Southern California when her mother retired from the Air Force. Growing up, Ashley idolized singers like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, dreaming of one day becoming a singer like them. At the age of 10, her mother bought her a karaoke machine, and Ashley would often wake up the entire household, singing her heart out day and night. By the time she was 11, she was singing in the church choir and performed her first solo. She continued to sing in school plays throughout junior high and high school, all while pursuing her love for sports, playing soccer and tennis. Despite her deep passion for music, life’s responsibilities—college, sports, family, and work—made it difficult for her to pursue her musical dreams. However, Ashley is now back on track, dedicating herself once again to the thing she loves most in life: music.

Katie (Cage) Felman

After performing in 14 different musical theater productions by the age of 14, Katie Felman (stage name Katie Cage) has released her own original pop album, Queen of Sound, featuring her first single, “Liar.” Inspired by bullying incidents she experienced, Katie wrote the lyrics and composed the music for “Liar,” as well as many other songs. While attending Parras Middle School, Katie performed in productions of High School Musical and Into the Woods. Katie is a huge movie buff, loves to make people laugh, and her greatest joy is singing and performing her original songs in front of a live audience. Katie’s original music can be found on Spotify, iTunes/Apple Music, and Amazon Music. She can be found on Instagram and YouTube @thekatiecage. Her music is mastered, released, and distributed by LandR. (c) 2023 Katie Felman.

The Fort Band

The Fort Band consists of the Fortaleza siblings: Vince (21), Calvin (20), Jedi (17), Ralf (15), and Zaira (10). Vince and Calvin are both military reservists and college students at CSULB, while Jedi and Ralf are in high school, and Zaira is in 5th grade. Their musical influences and experiences are diverse. They all used to play as a string quintet and have been part of an orchestra that performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall three times. This past January 1st, they attended the Pueri Cantores Festival (meaning “young singers”) in Rome, where they sang in a mass celebrated by the Pope.

As a band, they began playing together in 2019, with Zaira as the vocalist—she was about 7 years old at the time. They perform at family parties and when hanging out with friends, playing both old and new songs. Their musical tastes include The Beatles, ABBA, Bruno Mars, Adele, Maroon 5, and Twenty One Pilots. They first auditioned for SBGT in 2023 with Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen but did not make the cut.

Shortly after, he was enrolled at the School of Rock in Vacaville, Northern California, where he took his first voice lessons and joined his first rock band. In June of 2022, Nico and his family moved to Torrance, where his parents enrolled him at Coast Music in Manhattan Beach. There, he currently takes vocal and piano lessons and is the lead singer of a rock band called “High and Dry.” Nico has also had the joy of connecting with the award-winning non-profit organization, the South Bay Music Connection. Through them and Coast Music, he has performed at many local events and venues.

One of Nico’s singing highlights so far has been performing the National Anthem at SoFi Stadium for the BCS Flag Football Championship. From the very first time he sang in public, Nico has loved connecting with the audience. Seeing them sing along and dance while he performs motivates him to keep pursuing his goal of becoming a Grammy-winning artist.

Sonia Grace

Sonia Grace is a Kenyan-American artist who uses music to share her culture with the world. She sings, writes, and raps in English, Swahili, and her native tongue, Kikuyu. Her song “Thikka Boys” is a tri-lingual dance anthem that pays homage to her hometown of Thika, Kenya, while also celebrating body positivity. Her music is available on all streaming platforms.

In September 2023, Landon was the sole international performer at the Yamaha Gala Concert in Tokyo. He will represent the US again in January 2025 at the Yamaha International Highlight Concert in Malaysia, performing his original composition, “It’s Always…”, based on the characteristics of his family members.

Landon was also the youngest pianist at the Tulips in Harmony “Send Your Love” Memorial Charity Concert Series in 2024, which supported recovery efforts for the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. Beyond music, Landon is a national medalist in fencing.

Charlee Marie

Charlee Marie is 10 years old and in the 5th grade. Music is a huge part of Charlee’s life. She has been singing, dancing, and performing since the age of 4, starting by singing the National Anthem at Little League games in El Segundo and later participating in many other events around the South Bay.

Now, Charlee has been in over 20 theater productions, including playing the title characters in Annie and Moana, as well as roles such as “Lavender” in Matilda, “Amaryllis” in Music Man, and “Brigitta” in The Sound of Music. She plays the piano, guitar, and ukulele, and has recently started writing her own songs. Charlee also performs in a rock band at Coast Music with her older brother.

Charlee would like to thank her family, friends, 8 pets (that’s right... 8!), and everyone else who has helped her along the way!

Chelsea Motal

Chelsea Motal is a jazz music and ethnomusicology graduate from UCLA and a proud mom from El Segundo. When she’s not showering love on her two elementary-aged kids, wonderful parents, devoted husband, and the El Segundo community, Chelsea shines as a brand consultant for small women-owned businesses. Although they both attended UCLA, she met her husband shortly after college, sparking a lifelong love story that feels like a match made in heaven.

Tonight, Chelsea is thrilled to share a song she wrote, inspired by themes of longing, love, and facing the fear of rejection. She truly values her community, friends, and family, and is immensely grateful for their unwavering support tonight and always.

Maddie Rose

Maddie Rose is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter currently taking a gap year to focus solely on her music. She lives in Hermosa Beach and recently graduated from Fusion Academy High School, where she spent her time in the studio working on original songs. Music has always been Maddie’s safe space, allowing her to express herself no matter how she’s feeling. Performing and connecting with people through her songs is a dream, and someday, she hopes to share her music on stages around the world.

For Maddie, songwriting is about storytelling. The most rewarding moments are when people tell her they relate to her lyrics or find comfort in something she’s written. She has been singing since she was young and started playing the piano, but reading sheet music always felt overwhelming. Instead, she began figuring out songs by ear. Her seven-year-old versions may have been a little rough, but over the years, she’s developed an ear for it and can now pick up most songs just by listening to them.

The song Maddie is singing today isn’t an original, but it holds a special meaning for her. She thanks everyone for letting her share a part of her story.

Andrew Schwarz

Andrew Schwarz is a singer/songwriter who moved to LA a year ago from New Jersey. He sings professionally for Bel Air Church in Encino, teaches piano privately and at Rhodes School of Music in La Cañada, and writes and performs his own songs wherever he can.

In the past, Andrew served as a section leader and soloist for the New Jersey Choral Society for six years and has taught from his private piano studio for nearly 20 years. Andrew aspires to perform on the biggest stages in the world and is excited to play and sing a brand-new original song at the South Bay’s Got Talent competition!

He can be followed on Instagram at @AndrewSchwarzMedia.

SELECT

SELECT, directed by Yuki Shundo, is a focused training program and group for those passionate about their pursuits. SELECT includes both an adult group and a junior (teens) group. The adult group, which brings together diverse dancers from different backgrounds, will showcase their dedication and skills at the South Bay’s Got Talent 2024 competition. The program emphasizes mastering skills, learning techniques, and practicing to become outstanding performers.

SELECT isn’t just about being okay; it’s about being the best one can be, with dedicated support and feedback. It’s an exciting journey where individuals uncover their full potential, make improvements, and achieve their goals.

South Bay Salsa Kids

South Bay Salsa Kids is a Palos Verdes-based Latin dance company featuring kids and teens, directed by instructor/choreographer Susie Bartes. The company performs a wide variety of dance styles, including Salsa, Cha Cha, and Merengue, as well as Disco, Mambo, and Samba. They have been together for just over one year and have already had the pleasure of performing at several street fairs and festivals throughout the South Bay.

They are honored to have been selected as finalists at the South Bay’s Got Talent competition! The dancers performing this evening are members of the teen elite company: Siena, Zen, Minami, and Ramaan.

Lynn Yamaguchi

Lynn Yamaguchi is 14 years old and a freshman at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. She has been singing for about six years and also enjoys dancing, playing guitar, basketball, running, and reading. This is Lynn’s third time auditioning and second time performing at South Bay’s Got Talent. She will be singing “Burn” from Hamilton, a musical that has greatly inspired her. After seeing Hamilton live in Hollywood, Lynn felt a strong connection to Eliza’s character, which motivated her to take on this challenge.

While Lynn usually sings a variety of songs, including musicals, Disney, and Japanese songs, this will be her first time performing a musical piece in front of an audience, and she is excited about it. Preparing for this performance has been a lot of fun, helping her improve both her singing and acting skills. Lynn is looking forward to continuing her growth as a performer. She loves performing in front of an audience because it gives her a sense of accomplishment and fills her with joy, standing on stage and sharing what she is passionate about. All in all, Lynn is thrilled to be here and grateful for the opportunity.

YOUR ENTERTAINER

Vihaan Jadhav

Vihaan Jadhav is 12 years old and attends Jefferson Middle School. He has been dancing since he was five and loves various dance styles, including Bollywood and Hip-Hop. Vihaan is the winner of the 2024 South Bay’s Got Talent competition. He dances because there is no greater feeling than moving to music.

In addition to his passion for dance, Vihaan enjoys learning Taekwondo and holds a Brown Belt with two stripes.

Vihaan has performed many Bollywood dances on stage with Adda Academy, Arya Academy, RRB Dance Company, and Dance Manch, both in group dances and solo acts. He is a self-taught dancer, quickly picking up dance moves by watching videos.
