Over the past nine years at Brevard, she has taken the Tornados from eighth place in the conference to first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with her best season coming in 2005 as she was named AAC Coach of the year with the Tornados finishing 25-6, and has guided the Tornados through the transition into NCAA Division II play, qualifying for the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament in each of the two seasons Brevard has been eligible.

2010 Season Preview The Tornados volleyball team became the first Brevard College team to make postseason play two times, earning their second straight berth to the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament before bowing out in the first round. This season, although the Tornados lost five seniors, including BC blocks record-holder Brooke Seaman, and their top two kills leaders from last season, Brevard has reason to remain hopeful that their postseason streak will stay alive, behind the play of senior libero Rebecca Schoonover on the backline and junior middle hitter Jordei Osby and

Cassie Smatana eyes the court before preparing to serve in a preseason scrimmage

sophomore outside hitter Jamie Atkinson up front. The Tornados went 15-15 last season, 3-13 in South Atlantic Conference play and are led this year by the lone senior on the team as Schoonover received preseason recognition as a member of the All-SAC Second Team. Schoonover, an Honorable Mention recipient for the sixth annual Wooden Cup last year, returns as the Tornados active digs leader and is third all-time in the BC record books with 1,210 digs in her career. The senior finished up last season with 514 digs for an average of 4.59 per game, good for fifth in the conference last season. The Tornados finished first overall in the South Atlantic Conference in 2009 in blocks per game with 2.41 per

game and Osby and Atkinson were major players

in the effort as Osby finished second overall

in the conference to teammate Seaman with

1.16 per game, with 109 total blocks, recording

48 solo blocks and 61 block assists, including

a pair of nine block efforts against Mars Hill last

season. Atkinson added 75 blocks last season as

a freshman and will be expected to help pick up

some of the load this season at the net, as well

as improve her all-around game, while junior

Sydney Yeomans and Lindsey Rogers follow the trajectory of the ball during play

Ashlie Morrison had several matches with multiple blocks as well.

2010 Season Preview

On the offensive side, Morrison leads the

returners, averaging 1.60 kills per game last

season, connecting on 18.1 percent of her

attacks. Osby and Atkinson are also returning

leaders for the Tornados connecting on 1.47 and

1.20 kills per game respectively. Also returning

up the middle for the Tornados is sophomore

Ashley Wilson and she will be expected to

provide valuable depth for Coach Brenda

Skeffington.

Ashley Wilson prepares to go up for the kill in preseason action

Newcomers expected to battle for playing time up front and contribute immediately include

junior transfer Cassie Smatana, as well as freshmen Erin Cox, Joy Oswalt, Erin Rollins, Sawyer Gray and Kortney Conner. Smatana comes to the Tornados from Colby Community College where she showcased great versatily, serving as an outside hitter and libero. Cox, Oswalt, Rollins, Gray and Conner also come to the Tornados having received numerous high school awards and commendations. Returning to set up the BC attack this upcoming season is sophomore Bethany Stevenson. Stevenson led the team with 828 set assists last season, averaging 7.39 assists per game and will be challenged for playing time this season by incoming freshman Erin Cox. Rogers and sophomore Sydney Yeomans return to the backline for the Tornados this season and will be joined by sophomore Hayley Fisher who joined the squad for practice in the spring. Incoming freshman Amanda Possidente will also see time on the backline for Coach Skeffington. The Tornados volleyball team has a series of scrimmages starting on Tuesday, Aug. 17, before opening the season on the road on Sept. 2 against Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.

Jamie Atkinson goes on the attack in the 2010 BC Preseason Schedule 8

The South Atlantic Conference

The South Atlantic Conference

The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

www.thesac.com

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2009 BC Volleyball Season in Review The 2009 Brevard College volleyball team became the first Brevard team to earn a spot in consecutive Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournaments, winning matches against Catawba and Tusculum, before capturing a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mars Hill on November 6th to make the tournament. The win capped the second season in a row the Tornados made the tournament by dropping the first two sets in the deciding match, before rallying to win the final three sets to clinch a spot. The Tornados finished the season 15-15, earning their second above .500 records in two seasons, while finishing up 3-13 in the regular season in South Atlantic Conference play. Brevard was ranked ninth in the preseason SAC Coaches poll, placing a member on the preseason Bethany Stevenson and Brooke Seaman All-South Atlantic Conference team in senior Brooke Seaman, the reigning champion in hitting percentage go up for the block against Montreat at 34.0 percent and blocks in averaging 0.96 per set. Joining Seaman on the team were four fellow seniors in Cori Emory, Christin Johnston, Megan Street and Chelsey Trojan as Coach Brenda Skeffington looked to incorporate the efforts of the returners and four newcomers to the rotation in their effort to compete in the conference. The Tornados opened up the 2009 season on the road at the Volley in the Mountains in Montreat, N.C., sweeping all three matches against Mountain State, Reinhardt and Montreat, before finishing up their season opening road trip with a 3-0 sweep over Belmont Abbey on September 2nd. Brevard came home to Boshamer Gymnasium in early September and suffered their first losses of the young season on September 5th against Southern Wesleyan and September 8th against SAC opponent Lenoir-Rhyne, before sweeping both matches against Converse and North Greenville in the Brevard Tri-Match on September 12th. The Tornados sandwiched a win over Coker between losses to Newberry and Wingate, before finishing the month of September on a three-game winning streak, topping Queens at home and Catawba and North Greenville on the road. October was a rough month for the Tornados as Brevard opened up the month falling to Lincoln Memorial and CarsonNewman, before topping Montreat on October 7th. The Tornados would fall in their next six matches, before rallying to defeat King College in Bristol, Tenn. on October 27th to snap the streak.

Brevard would fall in their next two matches, before heading into the month of November, needing to win their last two SAC contests to reach the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. With their backs against the wall, Brevard topped Tusculum in Greeneville, Tenn. by a score of 3-1, before heading into their final South Atlantic Conference match of the season against Mars Hill. The Lions roared out to a 2-0 lead, but led by the combined play of Seaman and sophomore Jordei Osby at the net as the duo combined for 17 blocks in the match, Brevard rallied to win the last three sets with Osby clinching the win on a solo block on Mars Hill’s last attack to reach the tournament.

accomplishments accumulated throughout their careers.

In tournament play, the Tornados drew top-seeded Wingate University for the second season in a row in the quarterfinals. Brevard fought hard in the match as seniors Street and Seaman had stand-out performances in the contest among others, but the Tornados were unable to top the Bulldogs, falling in straight sets to end the 2009 season.

For the season, Brevard led the South Atlantic Conference in blocks on the season, averaging 2.41 per set, .05 ahead of runner-up Carson-Newman and over a half a block better than Lincoln Memorial who finished third in the category. The Tornados were also ranked seventh in service aces per game with 1.62 per set and finished seventh in hitting percentage as a team, converting 17.4 percent of all attacks.

Chelsea Larsen goes over the net to notch another block for the Tornados

Individually, Seaman finished fourth in the conference in hitting percentage and kills, connecting on 29.0 percent of her attacks for an average of 3.03 kills per game. Seaman retained the individual SAC blocks title for the second season in a row, finishing the season averaging 1.20 per game. She also was among the leaders in service aces on the season, finishing seventh with 0.37 per set. For her efforts on the season, Seaman became the first Brevard College volleyball player to be recognized as a postseason First Team All-SAC selection by the head coaches in the South Atlantic Conference. Seaman was joined in the final South Atlantic Conference rankings by sophomore middle hitter Jordei Osby, as the 6-1 athlete matched Seaman block for block during the season on her way to finishing second in the conference with 1.16 per game. Freshman setter Bethany Stevenson finished seventh in the SAC averaging 7.39 assists per set, while junior libero and team captain Rebecca Schoonover was fifth in the conference with 514 digs on the season, for an average of 4.59 per set. Other team individual performances and leaders include sophomore Chelsea Larsen who finished second on the team with 272 kills on the season and sophomore Ashlie Morrison who added 154. Lindsey Rogers finished the season with 151 set assists, while Emory finished second on the team in service aces on the season with 33. On the defensive side of the ball, Trojan finished the season second on the team with 230 digs, with Emory close behind at 219. Freshman Jamie Atkinson was third on the team with 75 total blocks on the season with 0.71 coming per game. Brevard loses their five seniors led by Seaman as the Spring Hill, Fla. native finished her career as the BC all-time leader in total blocks with 520 in her career and finishes third on the all-time kills list with 1,508 in her career. However, the Tornados future remains bright as Brevard returns several key players, including rising senior libero Rebecca Schoonover and the 10 underclassmen on the roster gained valuable experience down the stretch as the Tornados look to continue their recent string of success in the upcoming 2010 season.

Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference.

Dr. Drew Van Horn, President

Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002.He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution.

Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities.

To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.

Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.

In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms. During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure. The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.

Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.
