The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2011 Season in Review Coming into his first season as head coach of the Brevard College baseball team, Coach Matt McCay knew he would face a series of challenges, but the Tornados met them head on as Brevard recorded more wins this season on the diamond than they have in the past four years. The Tornados finished up their third season as full members of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference with a 14-28 record, going 5-21 in conference play. The Tornados topped Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial, Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry and Mars Hill in conference action and other highlights from the season include Brevard’s first series sweep coming on the opening weekend of the season over Coach Walsh eyes his target as Alderson-Broaddus, as well as the Tornados he pitches to the batter in preseason drills taking the season series from Winston-Salem State and their thrilling come-from-behind win over top 25 Erskine College. Brevard also saw their first player recognized on the SAC Baseball All-Conference team, as first baseman Randy O’Dell received Second Team All-Conference honors, riding a 26 game hitting streak during the season to finish fourth overall in the conference with a .388 batting average, while leading the team in hits, RBIs and home runs. The Tornados opened their season with three losses, falling to Pfeiffer, Catawba and Erskine on the road, before opening up play at Gil Coan Field on February 12th against Alderson-Broaddus. Zack Simpson pitched a complete game, scattering five hits in game one of the doubleheader to give Brevard their first win of the season, 5-1, and Ethan Pressley had a pair of RBIs in support of Casey Smith’s pitching effort as the Tornados swept the doubleheader over the Battlers, 5-1. In the final game of the weekend series, the Tornados bats exploded as Brevard batted around in the second inning en route to the weekend sweep with their 15-3 victory. The Tornados continued their winning ways the next game as Ron Patterson crossed the plate in the top of the 10th inning in Tigerville, S.C. as Brevard topped North Greenville, 5-4. Brevard dropped their next three games before winning a wild one up in Bristol, Tenn. over King College. The Tornados had a 13-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but King would rally, plating seven runs in the last half inning before Dustin Haithcox shut the door down in earning his first save of the season.

Steele Myers prepares to relay the ball to first to complete the double play

Brevard picked up their first conference victory of the season on February 26th over Newberry College at Gil Coan Field, taking the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. The bats came alive in support of Brennan Daniels as Patterson, O’Dell and Zack Merriken all drove

the ball out of the ballpark to give the Tornados the 9-4 victory.

BC victories over Winston-Salem State sandwiched a Tornados triumph over LenoirRhyne University, with a pair of grand slams by Patterson and Pressley and a home run by Zak Beard providing the excitement in the contests.

Randy O’Dell became the first BC baseball player to be named to the postseason All-SAC team

The Tornados next win would come in another thriller as Brevard avenged an earlier defeat to Erskine College, by rallying to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth to provide the home crowd with the 12-11 victory. Champ Stuart and O’Dell drove in runs to tie the game up before Merriken delivered the game winner, scoring Derek Ham from second to give Brevard the victory.

Steele Myers, O’Dell and Merriken all went deep in the next game to keep the BC winning streak alive as the Tornados topped Mars Hill 9-8. Haithcox recorded his third save of the season, retiring the side with runners on second and third to end the game in support of Smith. The Tornados dropped several games before their next victory as Smith went the distance against Tusculum College, scattering five hits and striking out five, while Beard went 3-for-3 with an RBI, providing all the offense BC needed in the 3-0 victory. Brevard continued in conference play the next weekend, taking the first game from LMU, 6-5, with Beard again coming up in the clutch, driving a single into the left centerfield gap scoring Myers from third for the Tornados first walk-off victory in April. Due to weather concerns, the Tornados were forced to push Senior Day back, but Jacob White took advantage of the time on the mound as the senior right-hander threw six quality innings in his final start of his BC career, striking out five batters and Myers hit his fourth home run of the season as the Tornados ended the 2011 regular season with the 10-3 victory over Montreat. As a team, the Tornados showed improvement across the board in the South Atlantic Conference rankings as Brevard improved to seventh overall in team batting average, eighth in team pitching, had 57 stolen bases, up from 22 and dropped three runs off their team earned run average. Brevard loses only two seniors from this year’s squad, but returns the majority of their starters and impact players as Coach McCay and the Tornados will look to continue improving across the board with the goal being to make the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. College is about getting an education…but that doesn’t mean learning only happens in the classroom. At Brevard College we take your education seriously and that is why we believe in your holistic development—that is, helping facilitate your growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a socially cohesive campus community.

A Campus For Students… Life on the Brevard College campus is centered on the student experience in and out of the classroom. From the moment you arrive on campus, you become part of a dynamic community where there are more than 30 active student organizations and clubs, a Campus Activities Board (CAB) that offers over 100 programs and events a year, and there are multiple offerings in intramurals, outdoor recreation, and student leadership opportunities.

…By Students Everything that happens in the student culture on campus is driven by student leadership that you can easily be a part of joining. Whether you want to be involved in student government (SGA), athletics, chorale ensembles, or just take on a position as a resident advisor (RA), there is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, as a paraprofessional, and ultimately as a professional member of the campus culture and leadership team on campus.

Step In. Stand Out.

5 Fast Facts: • All student clubs, organizations, and offices in Campus Life are run by students, just like you! • Students are recognized for their individuality, but also in how they work with other students in group dynamics. • Majors are for degrees; experiences are for life—we will help you develop and grow both in and out of the classroom • There are clubs and organizations and leadership opportunities for everyone— you want it, we got it. If we don’t, we will create it! • Leadership begins with you. If you step in, you will stand out.

Once you step into the campus culture, you are already predestined to develop and grow your personal leadership skills. At BC, we will get to know you, welcome you into the cohesive family of learners, and help you develop your potential to do whatever it is you want to do while enrolled at Brevard College. This experience is what you want to make it and it’s all about you as an individual within the context of a community of other students who want to form friendships, team relationships, and lifelong bonds with you. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC once you get involved. Brevard College • Brevard, NC • 1.800.527.9090 • admissions@brevard.edu • www.brevard.edu

This is Brevard College Campus Life at Brevard College The Division of Campus Life is committed to the personal development and growth of each student at Brevard College. We will get to know you and help you get what you want out of this collegiate experience. Through our many offerings and services, you will find an informative, resourceful division that is here to serve you!

Personal Development and Wellness It all begins with you as an individual. We recognize that you come to College from a certain place, background, with certain characteristics that make you unique. We don’t want to change any of that, but we want you to be the “best you” that you can be. Along the way, we recognize that there are times when students struggle with college and we have offices and services that are here to assist you individually. Whether it’s through our Wellness Center in Stamey, our housing office with your roommate, suitemates, or room assignments, or whether it’s in helping assist you through our Campus Security operation, we have 24/7 coverage that is available in any time of need.

Community Development But we don’t want you to stay individuals forever. Part of being in college and developing into the responsible citizen that you will be is to live in a community with others and learn from each other and grow socially, physically, emotionally, and more. Thus, we have offices centered on engaging you in activities and events in various interest areas. Additionally, we have programming centered on multicultural awareness, service initiatives, intramurals, outdoor recreation, and more.

Other Unique BC Programs And if all of this wasn’t enough—we offer alternative fall and spring break trips to help raise awareness to social justice issues while providing service to local communities of interest. We also provide opportunities for students to study abroad, be a part of a living-learning community like our Institute for Women in Leadership (IWIL), or take part in our Voice of the Rivers (VOR) program where students work with faculty on a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. At BC, we have so much to offer you in your educational and social pursuits and these are just a few examples of the types of experiences you could be enjoying. So what are you waiting for? Be prepared to step in and stand out in a community developed for students, by students. All that’s missing is…YOU!
