For nearly 70 years, Globe Santa, a signature program of the Boston Globe Foundation, has delivered holiday presents to more than 3 million children in need throughout the Greater Boston area. Through the generosity of our readers, advertisers, and thousands of other caring citizens across Greater Boston, we customize gift boxes filled with age-appropriate toys, books, and educational games to provide holiday joy for thousands of children each holiday season.

Because Joy is a gift every child deserves
A grandmother raising her two grandsons:
I am a senior citizen and have custody of my two grandsons. My income isn’t enough to give the kids a great holiday. I am trying my best to keep them happy but sometimes my best isn’t enough. With their mom being away from them, it sometimes brings tears in their eyes. Some holiday cheer is what they need. I want to thank you in advance for your support.
“I remember as a child receiving gifts from Globe Santa. My mother was a single mother of five children so she struggledtremendously – thank you. We always were grateful for them and felt blessed.”
“My son helps me daily with tasks that I have a hard time completing due to my illness. I wish I could afford to get him the clothes and games that he so deserves and it hurts my heart when I am not able to. Thank you for letting us participate in the Globe Santa program this year.
A family has a three year old with a recent autism diagnosis:
“It is impossible for both of us to work because my son’s therapies are rigorous. We are doing everything we can to get by every month but Christmas will be difficult. Thank you for considering us!”
A NOTE TO OUR READERS
Helping New England gear up for another season of giving.
Living in New England comes with its fair share of beauty to behold. This land, with its lush coastal, mountain, and lake regions, gives us plenty of reasons to proudly call this region home. And beyond its physical allure are the people and their immense giving spirit.
The landscape of giving in New England
Generosity thrives in New England, keeping pace with the nation’s impressive charitable giving. Last year, individuals in the US donated a total of $374.4 billion, and GoFundMe ranked Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire among the top 10 most generous states — Vermont even claimed the top spot for the second year running.
Along with financial resources, New Englanders readily donate their time — the average value of a volunteer hour in New England states is above the national average for 2023, even with that national average having increased over 5 percent from 2022. The value of the volunteer hour is a measurement of charitable force, indicating our region’s strong influence when it comes to sacrificing precious time to staff these vital organizations.
Honoring Jack Connors Jr.
New England’s spirit of generosity found one of its greatest champions in Jack Connors Jr., a lifelong Bostonian and philanthropic leader. On July 23, at age 82, Connors passed away in his Brookline home, leaving behind a powerful legacy. He was the ultimate embodiment of the giving spirit, donating $100 million of his advertising fortune and raising hundreds of millions more for young, at-risk Bostonians by strengthening causes he cared about.
Whether he was creating pro bono ad campaigns for nonprofits out of his legendary ad business, Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Inc.; giving to the Mass General Hospital for those affected by COVID-19; or offering key support behind Michelle Wu’s trailblazing mayoral campaign, Connors helped shape the future of New England.
Make a difference
In keeping with Connors’ legacy of generosity and the larger giving landscape of New England, we’re once again giving our readers the opportunity to learn about all the ways they can support causes they believe in. Whether you can give time, money, or both, this special section is full of opportunities to make a difference in your community.

Animal Rescue League
About us:
Pets are family. This belief is at the heart of everything we do at the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL).
We are the first female-founded animal welfare organization in Massachusetts and are proud to carry on a legacy of kindness and compassion, helping more than 20,000 animals annually since 1899.
Recognized for our innovative, award-winning programs that go beyond sheltering, we address the root causes of the issues facing animals and the people who love them. By partnering with communities, we help animals heal and thrive, keep pets and people together, and protect animals from harm.
Get involved:
Because there is no government funding for this important work, animals must rely on people like you to get the care they need, when they need it most, 365 days a year.
And now through Giving Tuesday, you can double your impact for animals because the Board of Directors and Friends of ARL are offering a dollar-for-dollar match up to $167,950!
Other ways you can lend a paw: adopt, foster, volunteer as a group or individual, donate pet food and supplies, or host a fundraiser. ARL’s animal care and adoption centers are in Boston, Dedham, and Brewster. We accept gifts online, by phone, or mailed to our Dedham address.

AANE’s staff, board members, and volunteers are Autistic adults, family members, and professionals—and their input and experiences shape our programs and service delivery. This year, AANE served more than 12,000 Autistic teens and adults, families, and professionals in New England and around the country.

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences
About us:
We are a nonprofit research institution located in East Boothbay, Maine. Our mission is to study the vital marine life that forms the foundation of global ocean health and apply what we learn to improve the future for all life on the planet. Most of this life is microscopic — like the tiny plants and animals (plankton) that form the base of the food web — but some of it is large, like kelp and coral reefs. Our vision is a world where scientific understanding of the ocean turns the tide on global challenges and unlocks the full potential of the ocean to support our society.
Our research spans the globe, but our campus sits on the shores of the Gulf of Maine. Stretching from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia, the Gulf is renowned for its beauty and critical to coastal communities, wildlife, and the future of our region. It is also one of the most rapidly warming bodies of water on the planet, underscoring the urgent nature of our science and serving as a vital place to gather data, conduct research, educate the next generation of ocean leaders, and work toward solutions.

We rely on the generosity of our supporters to keep our laboratory at the leading edge of ocean science. If you’re willing to become part of the community that makes our work possible, please make a donation today and help support bold science for our blue planet.

Cultural Survival
About us:
For over 52 years, Cultural Survival has partnered with Indigenous communities to advance Indigenous Peoples’ rights and cultures worldwide. Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass. on the lands of the Massachusett and Wampanoag Tribes, we are an Indigenous-led organization, with a staff and board who are majority Indigenous and majority women. We envision a future that respects and honors Indigenous Peoples’ inherent rights and dynamic cultures, deeply interwoven in lands, languages, spiritual traditions, and artistic expression. Working across a four-pronged strategy including grantmaking, capacity building, advocacy, and communications, we support Indigenous solutions to the world’s most pressing problems including climate change, food insecurity, and human rights violations.
In addition to our global impact, we partner with local Indigenous communities here in New England. Our grantmaking supports organizations like the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project, an immersion preschool revitalizing the Wampanoag language after 150 years without fluent speakers. In our advocacy work, we form part of the Massachusetts Indigenous Legislative Agenda working to educate state legislators and the public about issues of importance to Native Peoples in Massachusetts on topics such as including Indigenous history and contemporary cultures in our K-12 public school curriculum.

Daily Table
About us:
Since 2015, Daily Table has been working to solve hunger and create healthier communities. We’re an innovative nonprofit operating five community grocery stores in the Greater Boston area, with a mission to make nutritious food affordable for everyone. Founded by leading grocery and conscious capitalism expert, Doug Rauch (former president of Trader Joes), we flip the power dynamic of traditional aid organizations by providing healthy food that’s affordable on all budgets.
Daily Table is a hunger-relief organization masquerading as a neighborhood grocery store. Our stores provide a welcoming retail environment where shoppers can afford good food, choose what they want, and feel good about the food they’re buying. Daily Table leverages existing systems that support low income households, like SNAP, serving over 12,000 shoppers per month, one quarter of whom utilize SNAP benefits.
Get involved:
Support your neighbors in need by shopping at and donating to Daily Table! Daily Table is funded both by store sales (70 percent) and the generosity of donors (30 percent), meaning every funding dollar is matched with $2 of revenue. This makes us a sustainable solution to food insecurity, filling the gap between food pantries and traditional grocery stores. Whether you choose to volunteer, give, or shop at our stores, you can help provide affordable, nutritious food to your neighbors in need.

Dignity Matters
About us:
Dignity Matters provides free menstrual care and undergarments to 17,000 women across Massachusetts each month. Women can’t stay healthy, work, or attend school without menstrual care — but these items are expensive, rarely donated, and can’t be purchased using SNAP/Food Stamps, WIC, or any other government benefit programs. One in four students miss class regularly because they can’t access menstrual care (which is not required in public schools in Massachusetts), and when families struggle to pay for food and rent women often forgo pads or tampons to make more funds available. Dignity Matters helps women live with dignity each month by providing the items they are comfortable using, in the size and style that works best for them.
Get involved:
Volunteers and donors are the cornerstone of everything Dignity Matters does. The 4 million items we distribute each year are all donated to us by our community or purchased with your financial support. Every month, hundreds of volunteers help us collect, sort, pack, and distribute items to women in need. Whether you volunteer in our Westborough warehouse, pack menstrual care kits with your colleagues, or host a drive in your community, YOU can make a difference. And with every $50 you donate, you provide a woman the menstrual care and underwear she needs to learn, work, and live with dignity for a year.

FamilyAid
About us:
Massachusetts’ largest crisis is also one of the most difficult to see: The Commonwealth has the second-highest rate of family homelessness in the country. Each day, thousands of children and parents are fighting an invisible battle. Some are sleeping in subway and bus stations, many are living in shelters and hotels, and most are confined to a friend or family member’s couch or floor without a home to call their own. Others are on the brink — just one emergency, medical bill, or unexpected expense away from losing their home.
FamilyAid has been helping families overcome poverty, housing instability, and homelessness for over 100 years. Its multigenerational methods are proven, and its outcomes have been lauded by independent charity evaluators Charity Navigator and Candid’s GuideStar. What FamilyAid does works: Families supported by the agency have a 98 percent housing retention rate, and their housing placement rate is more than double the national average. And, most importantly, parents report that their children are healthier and happier.
Get involved:
FamilyAid serves more than 4,700 children and parents and needs your support to help them achieve lasting success. You can make a difference. Join FamilyAid by becoming an advocate, raising awareness about family homelessness or contributing whatever you can to support the children and parents in its care. Good Sports
About us:
Cost should not keep children from experiencing the developmental benefits of sports. Yet, the cost to play is a top reason why children from lower-income homes do not participate in sports, according to research from RAND. Good Sports changes the game for these children by providing brand-new sports and fitness equipment, apparel, and footwear from sporting goods companies to youth organizations in high-need communities.
Since 2003, Good Sports has donated nearly $15 million in critical sports gear to Massachusetts youth organizations, and over $110 million to programs across the country. This helps youth organizations decrease participation fees, expand programming, and much more — unlocking opportunities for children to improve physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally through play. Of the youth Good Sports serves, 76 percent identify as BIPOC, with a nearly even split between boys and girls. To learn more about how Good Sports is keeping kids off the sidelines, please visit www.goodsports.org.

The Home for Little Wanderers
About us:
For 225 years, The Home for Little Wanderers has helped build stable lives and hopeful tomorrows for children who are abused, neglected, or in at-risk circumstances.
The Home’s more than 30 community-based and residential programs serve thousands of children and their families across the Northeast. Many of these youth are victims of trauma, violence, or shattered family lives. At The Home, staff and volunteers ensure their emotional, social, educational, and physical well-being through a wide range of critical services — because every child deserves happiness, and no child should go through life alone. Get involved:
The generosity of donors is critical for The Home’s ability to deliver services throughout its communities. This time of year can be especially difficult for the children and families The Home serves, but you can help make it brighter by donating a toy to the Toy Room, sending a gift card, or making a monetary gift to The Home. The Home’s goal is to make sure every child in its care has a gift to open and every family is provided with much-needed essentials.

Home For Our Troops
About us:
Located in Taunton, MA, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a publicly funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives.
Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, blindness, severe burns, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, allowing them to focus on family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.
This year, Homes For Our Troops is proud and honored to celebrate its 20th anniversary of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives. Since HFOT’s inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents out of every dollar spent has gone directly to its program services, providing post-9/11 Veterans with the adapted homes they need. HFOT has built over 400 specially adapted custom homes in 45 states nationwide with over 65 active home-build projects in various stages of construction. There are currently three home-build projects underway in New England. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live and stays in contact with them after home delivery. Homes For Our Troops provides a pro-bono financial planner for three years to assist in financial planning and household budgeting. HFOT also provides homeownership education and warranty coverage to ensure that the Veteran is set up for long-term success as a homeowner.
HFOT has more than 100 Veterans in the application process for its program, and its goal is to build a home for every Veteran who qualifies for one.
As a top-rated military and Veterans nonprofit organization, Homes For Our Troops relies on the generosity of patriotic donors and supporters like you.

We pair older adult volunteers with first through fourth-graders to deliver evidence-based, one-to-one literacy support and mentorship. Over the past 30 years, we’ve helped more than 10,000 students in Greater Boston improve their reading and social-emotional skills.

Individuals can fill out an online form at bhchp.org/ get-involved/volunteer/ to sign up.

More Than Words
About us:
Systems are stacked against our young people. Up to 50 percent of the homeless youth population comes out of the child welfare system, only 50 percent of youth in foster care finish high school, and 70 percent of young adults in Massachusetts state prisons are people of color.
More Than Words empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court-involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Every year, we work with 300+ youth through job training in our youth-run businesses, youth development and life skills, supportive services like housing and help with court, and long-term career and education support to help youth achieve a sustainable career. We empower 98 percent of graduates to succeed in high school and 94 percent to be productively engaged in work, school, or both.
Learn more:
Our young people are out on our fleet of five trucks sourcing 4 million books and 725,000 items of pre-loved clothing each year. They manage an inventory of 160,000 books, running two retail bookstores and a (new!) thrift clothing store, and popping up all over the region in a mobile bookstore. They generate about 30 percent of the funding needed to run our program.
You can match their efforts by shopping for “gifts that give back” online or in stores, contributing financially to match earned revenue, donating books and clothing to our youth-run businesses, and volunteering your time and talent to work alongside our youth.

Mount Holyoke
About us:
At Mount Holyoke College, the world’s leading gender-diverse women’s college, we immerse students in a vibrant, intellectually adventurous global community to develop their voices and visions for the future, preparing them for lives of purposeful leadership in a culturally diverse world.
Philanthropy is in our DNA. Against staggering societal and logistical barriers, Mount Holyoke’s founder, Mary Lyon, became one of the original crowdfunders — inspiring a community of supporters with her bold views on educational equity. Together they transformed higher education and redefined the vision of what women can accomplish. Over the past 187 years, generations of dynamic leaders have followed in Lyon’s footsteps, addressing inequalities and making a difference in their communities.
Dec. 3, 2024, marks the 12th annual #GivingTuesday, a global movement of generosity started by a team led by MHC alum Asha Curran ’95. This is a day to come together to support the causes and communities we care most about.
Guided by our ambitious new strategic plan, MHC Forward, we are leveraging our legacy of philanthropy to ensure that Mount Holyoke leads the way for generations to come. We are proud of the important role Mount Holyoke plays in our community, and we celebrate the many ways our bold leaders and boundless learners continue to make positive change in the world.
As the first of the renowned Seven Sisters colleges, Mount Holyoke has been and always will be an innovator in designing and delivering an inclusive and exploratory liberal arts education.

National Organization for Rare Disorders
About us:
Rare is everywhere. From childhood cancer to hemophilia to ALS, one in 10 Americans has been diagnosed with some type of rare disease — 95 percent of which have no treatments. Headquartered in New England for 41 years and counting, the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD®) is the first nonprofit dedicated to serving all people with rare diseases in the US, which we do by advocating for research and cures, providing financial assistance to patients, and supporting hundreds of disease-specific nonprofits created by and for these isolated communities. Additionally, NORD grows and maintains a trusted database of Rare Disease Reports with information on diagnosis, treatment, and sources of support. We facilitate a network of 40 NORD Rare Disease Centers of Excellence, hospitals dedicated to working together to advance science and provide the best care to rare patients everywhere. We also organize annual events that bring patients together in a space where they’re not seen as different and where they can learn from one another.
Learn more:
Ninety-three percent of NORD’s funding directly supports the financial needs of rare disease community members, for whom medical costs are three-to-five times higher due to the number of appointments, tests, and emergencies they undergo in their years-long pursuit of a diagnosis and treatment. We operate a free hotline specifically to help them through their journeys. Your contribution to NORD supports the fight for treatments and cures for the 30 million Americans with rare diseases. New England Innocence Project
About us:
For over 20 years, the New England Innocence Project has been bringing innocent people home from prison, helping them rebuild their lives in freedom, and fighting injustice in the criminal legal system. We achieve life-changing exonerations by providing free forensic testing, investigation, experts, and an experienced legal team to people who have been wrongfully convicted in New England. Through our Exoneree Network, we create a thriving community for families impacted by long-term incarceration, providing financial, housing, and psychological support. We also create systemic change to prevent future tragedies.
Every day, we receive letters from wrongfully convicted people who need our help to come home to their families, where they belong. We envision a New England where no one is wrongfully convicted for a crime they did not commit and where we invest in community-based solutions for public safety.
Learn more:
Imagine being wrongfully convicted for a crime you didn’t commit. Imagine being taken from your family and community and put in a cage for something you didn’t do. Imagine being faced with dying in prison because no one would believe you. The New England Innocence Project exists to fight these realities. But we cannot do it alone. Whether it’s freeing innocent people from prison, preventing wrongful convictions in the future, or supporting people after release, your gift changes lives.
Until Dec. 31, your donation will be matched (up to $50,000) for twice the impact. Together, we can make freedom possible.

How technology is transforming philanthropy in New England and beyond
Thanks to social media and crowdfunding platforms, it’s never been so easy to give.
If it’s good enough for the Boston Marathon runners, it’s good enough for anyone looking to make a difference. The Ed Walsh Foundation used GoFundMe to raise more than $87,700 for its 2024 Boston Marathon team. Many other runners used the crowdfunding platform to reach their marathon fundraising goals, including one who raised more than $11,300 for the Watts 2 Boston Foundation. Another brought in $6,700 for families battling cancer.
These examples highlight how social media and crowdfunding sites — like GoFundMe and Kickstarter — are reshaping the way we give, making it easier than ever to support causes locally, nationally, or even globally.
The rise of online giving Online giving has been steadily growing over the years. GoFundMe and its affiliated platform, Classy, recently reported that a staggering $30 billion had been raised for campaigns on the platform since 2010. More than $8 billion has also been generated from Facebook and Instagram’s fundraising tools for nonprofits and personal causes, according to Meta.
Social media and crowdfunding sites are reshaping the way we give, making it easier than ever to support causes locally, nationally, or even globally.
So, what’s driving this trend? With many Americans spending hours on social media each day, they’re often inspired by fundraising stories that encourage giving. Social platforms are powerful tools for shaping behaviors, including philanthropy. Additionally, the rise of online shopping and digital transactions has made donating online seamless and convenient.
As more people adopt digital payment tools, contributing to causes has never been easier. Not only are crowdfunding and social media sites shareable and user friendly, but they
also allow donors to search for causes close to their hearts — from crisis relief to health and animal welfare. And, with just a few clicks, anyone can make a contribution that fits their budget.
Some of New England’s most successful recent campaigns underscore this impact: $144,000 was raised for J&J Farms in Amherst, Mass., after a fire damaged their home and barn, while $91,800 supported Natural Roots, a community-supported farm in Conway, Mass., when flooding destroyed its main crop fields.
Who is giving online?
New Englanders are among the most generous when it comes to online giving. Last year, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island were the top five contributors per capita to GoFundMe fundraisers, with Connecticut not far behind at number seven.
Online donors are often Millennials and Gen Z, who, according to the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, are typically single and less religious than traditional charitable givers. This digital-savvy group enjoys sharing their donations
online to raise awareness and encourage others to give. In fact, GoFundMe research shows that many feel inspired to contribute when they see fundraisers on their social media feeds.
This digital shift shows how social media and crowdfunding websites not only make philanthropy more convenient, but also more inspiring. As donors share their campaigns online, they amplify their impact, sparking a ripple effect that brings communities together, spreads generosity, and makes a difference one donation at a time.
From marathon runners to community farmers, digital tools are making giving more accessible, personal, and impactful than ever before. As New Englanders continue to embrace online giving, their generosity is not only meeting immediate needs but also inspiring others to take action. In this new era of philanthropy, even the smallest contribution can spark significant change, proving that together, we can make a difference – one click at a time.

Perkins
About us:
Perkins has pioneered learning for children with disabilities since 1829. Today, Perkins reaches 1.2 million children around the world, including our Watertown campus.
Yet, there is more to be done for the 240 million children with disabilities around the world because of a critical shortage of special education knowhow. In the U.S., children with disabilities remain underserved. In low and middle-income countries, 50 percent of children with disabilities aren’t in school at all.
Perkins is working to meet this global need, sharing our accessible education expertise with teachers and families through teacher training online and on our campus. We’re on a mission to make accessible education a reality for every child, everywhere.
Learn more:
Children with disabilities need skilled adults and specialized learning tools like assistive technology. Large switch toys help children with limited mobility. 3D printers give students with low vision tactile objects they can explore and understand. And iPads make learning applications accessible to children with many different kinds of disabilities. Without these tools, learning would be even more challenging for these students.
Assistive technology items come with high price tags, but you can help. This Giving Tuesday, your gift will fund accessible technology for our students. Gifts
made by Dec. 3 will be matched up to $40,000 thanks to a generous donor. Don’t miss this opportunity to make your gift go even further! Together, we can unlock learning for more children with disabilities.

Steppingstone
About us:
A bachelor’s degree is a proven tool for breaking generational cycles of economic inequality. In Boston, however, the majority of public school students do not access this opportunity.
Since 1990, Steppingstone has worked to build a future where all students have access to a college education. Our mission: Prepare students from historically marginalized communities to access, navigate, and graduate from college. In Boston, our evidence-based out-of-school program provides academic, social, emotional, and career readiness support from as early as fifth grade and continuing through college graduation. Nationally, we connect the people, practices, and innovations essential for eliminating barriers to college and career success.
Our program works: 99 percent of Steppingstone Scholars have graduated from high school, 91 percent have enrolled in a four-year college, and 80 percent have earned a bachelor’s degree within six years.
Following the Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, selective colleges’ admission of students of color has declined; however, Scholars’ college enrollment has remained strong. Our local and systemic work for educational equity is more important than ever.

Tedy’s Team
About us:
In 2005, Tedy Bruschi had just returned home from his third Super Bowl win and first Pro Bowl appearance in Hawaii when he suffered a stroke at 31. Tedy and his wife, Heidi, did not know the warning signs of stroke and were unaware his symptoms were stroke-related. During his recovery, Tedy and Heidi decided they wanted to use their experience to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke, and to help other survivors and their loved ones.
After Tedy’s Team was created, it quickly grew into an endurance training team that helped to raise life-saving funds and awareness.
Fast forward 19 years, and Tedy’s Team has grown to include over 1,600 alumni, participating in prestigious races like the Boston Marathon® presented by Bank of America, TCS New York City Marathon, and Bank of America Chicago Marathon, along with many other local and travel races. Together, they’ve raised over $10 million to support stroke and heart disease research, education, and awareness.
Thanks to the support of our community, volunteers, participants, and sponsors, Tedy’s Team has been able to create programs like our Comeback Assistance Program (CAP), the Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, as well as fund lifesaving research.
