A letter from the President: As you review the following pages, you will see a group of dedicated community leaders. Leaders who are committed to advancing the Greater Akron area through community service, leadership development, and talent attraction and retention. We are an organization of volunteers who believe in the future of this region and who strive daily to see it reach its full potential.

Community Service - In 2015 Torchbearers members provided more than 3,500 hours of service. As servant leaders we know that one of the best ways to strengthen a community is to help others, whether with the Akron Snow Angels (started by our own Erin Victor) or the neighborhood development through Better Block (Akron’s North Hill and Cuyahoga Falls). Torchbearers is honored to work with so many partners to positively impact our community.

Leadership Development - Leadership is not a destination -- it’s a journey. Torchbearers are a diverse group of leaders taking on challenges, not only in their careers, but in the Greater Akron community, as well. Leaders seek to continually improve themselves, and our organization provides entry points for emerging leaders across the spectrum who seek to grow, develop, and further engage.

Talent Attraction and Retention - In 2013 Torchbearers implemented a third pillar of our mission and intentionally focused on talent attraction and retention in the Greater Akron area. Not only has our membership become more informed and engaged in the broader efforts across the community, but we are actively working to attract and retain other emerging leaders in Akron. Intern Edge, a summer program to retain interns, will be in its third year in 2016, and we are piloting a partnership with the University of Akron to focus specifically on college students.

As we set the course of 2016, Torchbearers is deeply appreciative of the support from our partners. Leadership Akron continues to serve as a touchstone, inspiration, and resource through their role as our independent affiliate. Nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals committed to this region continue to engage with us in new and innovative ways. We are thrilled to embark upon our 13th year and look forward to continuing to help move Greater Akron forward.

ABOUT US Torchbearers was founded in 2003 to strengthen the connection between Akron-area nonprofits and emerging leaders, as well as to further efforts to attract and retain young people in Greater Akron. The organization is a bridge between established leadership of the community and leaders of the future.

Since 2009, Torchbearers has collaborated with Leadership Akron in an effort to advance community leadership in the Akron area, and in early 2013, the two organizations signed an affiliation agreement to collaborate more closely on an ongoing basis. The agreement strengthens the two organizations’ affiliation through coordinated fundraising, ex-officio board representatives and collaboration on marketing efforts. Both organizations retain independent governance and distinct identities, and Torchbearers identifies as an independent affiliate of Leadership Akron.

Torchbearers takes pride in the fact that members contributed more than 3,500 Torchbearers-sponsored service hours throughout the Akron community in 2015.

This is in addition to the countless hours members also contributed to non-sponsored community organizations and activities in the service of the Akron area. Some of the organizations that were helped in 2015 include St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Akron Children’s Hospital, Victim Assistance Program, United Disability Services, Greenleaf Family Center, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Downtown Akron Partnership, Akron Public Schools, Mobile Meals, Summit County Children’s Services, Magical Theatre Company, Better Block, Akron Marathon, Summit County ADM Board, Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, Camp Quality, Andrea Rose Teodosio Foundation, Haven of Rest, Bridgestone Invitational, and United Way of Summit County.

Today, Torchbearers membership is 110 strong and reflects the diversity found across the Greater Akron emerging leaders community. With the addition of 33 new members in 2015, and an active alumni group, Torchbearers plans to be able to accomplish even more in the years ahead.

OUR MISSION To enhance Greater Akron by connecting, developing and engaging emerging leaders who possess a passion to serve their community.

OUR VISION We envision a culture of diverse leadership in which Torchbearers are engaged and making a meaningful contribution to our community.

MEMBERSHIP Torchbearers membership requirements: • Be at least 25 years of age and under 39 years of age at the time of application • Agree to attend regular membership meetings and a number of required leadership training classes • Agree to be actively involved in a Torchbearers committee • Participate in a minimum number of Torchbearerssponsored service hours • Demonstrate a long-term commitment to the Greater Akron community • Payment of annual dues In addition to the requirements for all members, firstyear members must also attend all TB Leadership & Development Curriculum events.

APPLICATIONS If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of Torchbearers, applications are available on our website. Typically, applications become available in May and are due in June for the following year’s class. New members will be interviewed and chosen by November. COMMITTEES All active members of Torchbearers are required to be involved in at least one of six committees. The following pages describe each of the committees along with a few highlights from the previous year.

COMMUNICATIONS The Communications Committee oversees the coordination and development of all internal and external Torchbearers marketing and communications activities including public relations, promotions, the TB website, and social media. This committee is also the stewards of the TB Brand Standards.

EVENTS The Events Committee organizes non-service-related Torchbearers events – both social and educational – that support and encourage camaraderie not only within the organization of Torchbearers but between the organization and the community’s established leaders.

Events include the Annual Anniversary Reception with senior leaders, quarterly TB Tours, and the Annual AkRun & Crawl fundraiser.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS • Executed the 12th Annual Anniversary Reception honoring Matt McCallum as Distinguished Alumnus, and Father Norm Douglas and Lawrence W. Vuillemin, JD as Friends of Young Leaders, with approximately 300 community leaders in attendance • Hosted a successful Akrun & Crawl with over 250 participants, with proceeds benefiting Torchbearers’ programming • Implemented Torchbearers Tours including tours of Ronald McDonald House, Summit County Juvenile Courts and Goodwill Industries • Planned TB’s annual Signature Social Event at Akron Rotary Camp in Portage Lakes

LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT The Leadership & Development Committee provides Torchbearers with a comprehensive year-long curriculum devoted to professional and personal development, board leadership and community exposure. The committee is responsible for the programming of the First Year Curriculum as well as Returning Member programming. All of this programming is done with input from committee members and through collaboration with the committee advisor and Leadership Akron.

MEMBERSHIP Through its Membership Committee, Torchbearers continues to recruit Akron’s top emerging leaders.

The Membership Committee manages the new member process and is responsible for recruiting candidates, interviewing applicants and recommending a membership class each year. The Membership Committee also maintains the organization’s roster, tracks member participation at Torchbearers events, and provides support to the Treasurer.

SERVICE The Service Committee acts as a bridge between nonprofit agencies looking for assistance and Torchbearers members interested in giving their time and talent to a local cause. The committee is continuously reaching out to find new opportunities to be leaders in the community.

TALENT ATTRACTION & RETENTION The Talent Attraction and Retention Committee (TARC) is responsible for collaborating with existing organizations and institutions to engage emerging leaders in an effort to retain and grow talent in our community. TARC was established as a new committee at the beginning of 2013 and is geared toward partnerships with local business and industry, educational institutions, and organizations with the goal of providing resources for emerging leaders and their families.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS • Successfully recruited 60 participants for the Intern Edge Program • Met with leaders at organizations across the community to strengthen partnerships and continue to develop programming centered on attracting and retaining emerging leaders • Successfully collaborated with Leadership Akron for the second year to facilitate the Intern Edge program • In 2016, Intern Edge will roll into an ongoing learning experience provided annually by Leadership Akron at the end of the two year grant cycle. SMALL PROJECTS ACHIEVING REAL CHANGE (SPARC) With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Torchbearers launched a new SPARC (Small Projects Achieving Real Change) initiative in 2015. SPARC enabled our visionary members to collaborate with each other and outside organizations on new and exciting projects and presented them to a panel of community leaders. Here are the projects that were selected: #OnlyInAkron WelcomeCenter A grassroots effort to promote all that Akron has to offer to residents and visitors while making #OnlyInAkron a well-known and sustainable social presence for entertainment in Akron.

Project Leaders: Brian Steere and Jennifer Hertzig Art on Main – Empowered By Possibilities An effort to hang portraits of strong female leaders of Akron, OH in underutilized spaces in Downtown Akron, thereby calling attention to both. Project leaders: Adrienne Bradley, Laura Wallerstein and Shane Wynn Sidewalks With Soul To utilize existing infrastructure and wireless speakers to lay music throughout Downtown Akron. Project Leaders: Kat Pestian and Allyson Boyd Think Inside the Box A project that will bring an 8x40 ft shipping container to Downtown Akron that will serve as an educational tool for folks of all ages promoting sustainability and green living in Akron.

INTERN EDGE PROGRAM Intern Edge, a program offered by Torchbearers and Leadership Akron, serves as a conduit between interns and established community leaders, as well as organizations and groups making a positive difference in our community, to show Akron’s advantages.

Each Intern Edge session will offer interns access to community decision-makers and lessons for personal and professional success.

The summer program consist of four Wednesday sessions, as well as an orientation and closing reception with employers and community leaders. Sessions will cover topics that emphasize plugging in to the community, making connections that count, and leading by example.

30 FOR THE FUTURE Torchbearers proudly congratulates the TB members and alumni below who have been recipients of the 30 for the Future award presented by the Greater Akron Chamber. This award honors young professionals (ages 25-39) whose stellar contributions impact their industries and the Greater Akron region. Each year, the Greater Akron Chamber asks its members and our community to nominate outstanding young professionals in our region. An independent Advisory Council then selects the award recipients based on the finalists’ Leadership Documents, which showcase professional and community accomplishments, teambuilding, leadership, and creativity in overcoming obstacles.
