ISN’T ENOUGH!

On September 9th we had our biennial open house that had a junior focus this year. It was successful beyond our wildest imaginations as over 70 juniors joined us for our judging, fitting, and showmanship clinics. The kids enjoyed learning from some of the best in the business as the adults enjoyed cattle displays, tours, and draw prizes. Over 150 people feasted on brisket and drunk chicken and the culmination of the day was the draw for a heifer calf! For every clinic the juniors completed they were able to put their name in the draw.

A huge congratulations to Silvie Schimann of Prince George, BC for winning, we are excited for you and your heifer and her future in the 4-H program in BC! Thank you to everyone who made the day such a huge success, it was one for the books!

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Howdy Ho! Well, if that was summer, I guess we had it! Time seems to fly by when things are busy around the farm but busy is a good thing. I hope everyone had a great summer and took the time to spend with family and friends and enjoy what life has in store for us all!

I want to congratulate the Canadian Junior Limousin Association on their 2023 Impact Show held at Spencerville, Ontario in August. An outstanding achievement with a great show that was long overdue. The perseverance the volunteers and organizers showed is something to be very proud of! Thank you to all that played a role in organizing and to our generous sponsors that make this show happen. The show saw 64 junior members, and 72 head on display representing 7 provinces. Let me tell you, we have a young and ambitious group coming forth and can’t wait to see what they have in store for the coming years ahead!

With fall upon us, we see the workload for all our members increase with preparation for fall sales and shows. A friendly reminder to all, be proactive in registration work and DNA testing to help our staff with getting things done in a timely manner. The CLA has launched a new DNA tab on Digital Beef to help with registering animals for testing. Look for an e-blast in the near future with further instructions on this new user-friendly method!

Tests results are taking 3 weeks (21 days) so please be patient as results will be forwarded as soon as available.

With newly elected directors, it allows others to be relieved of their duties. I want to thank the individuals that volunteered their time to make our breed association better. Cody Miller and Wayne Burgess, your dedication and commitment to our breed is much appreciated and we cannot thank you enough for what you have given our membership and association!

I am honoured, and I am grateful for the support our directors and membership show in electing myself as president of the Canadian Limousin Association. The passion for the Limousin breed has pumped through my veins since the first day I can remember cows! With the support of the directors and our staff, I feel positive progress ahead as we look forward to the tail end of 2023. Please feel free to contact myself in regards to questions or concerns! We need to know your concerns to not only make your program more successful but our breed better. We are all in this together and it’s a great time to be in the beef industry and show why Limousin Breeds Success!

Allo! Bon, si c’était notre été, il est passé! Le temps passe vite quand on est occupé sur la ferme, mais d’être occupé c’est une bonne affaire. J’espère que tout le monde ont eu une belle été et que vous avez pris du temps pour passer avec la famille et les amis, et que vous avez profité de la vie!

J’aimerais féliciter l’Association Junior Limousin de Canada pour le 2023 Impact Show tenue à Spencerville, Ont. en août. Une excellente réussite avec un très bon show qui été attendu depuis longtemps. La persévérance que les bénévoles et organisateurs ont démontrés est quelque chose de lequel ils peuvent être fier. Merci à tous qui ont joué un rôle dans l’organisation, et à nos commanditaires généreux qui permet cet évènement de prendre place. Le show a vu 64 membres juniors, plus 72 animaux qui représenté 7 provinces. Je peux vous dire, on a une jeune et ambitieux groupe qui s’en vient et j’ai hâte de voir ce qu’ils vont nous apporter dans les années qui s’en viennent!

Avec l’automne qui approche, on voit l’ouvrage augmenter pour nos membres avec la préparation pour la saison de ventes et shows. Un petit rappel, soyez proactive avec les enregistrements et l’ADN pour aider nos employés pour accomplir les tâches rapidement. Le CLA a sorti un nouvel onglet sur Digital Beef pour aider avec l’enregistrement des animaux qui doivent être tester. Rester à l’affût pour un e-blast bientôt avec plus d’information sur cette nouvelle méthode ‘user-friendly’!

Les résultats pour les tests prennent environ 3 semaines (21 jours), donc svp soyez patient parce que les résultats seront envoyés aussitôt qu’ils sont disponibles.

La passion pour la race Limousin est dans mes veines depuis la première fois je me souviens d’avoir vu des vaches! Ithink it’s fitting to start off my report by making note of the strong calf prices we are seeing this fall. If anything in the future, we will look back on the Fall 2023 edition of the Limousin Voice and remember the good prices. In an economy that continues to put financial constraints on the producer it’s noteworthy to comment on this positive. Across all breeds and sectors of the cattle industry we continue to see a reduction in herd size and an increase in operating costs. This is true for the Association; however, we are fortunate that in the past couple of years we have reduced spending in regard to rent, administration and travel. All of which is helping to weather the changing economic times.

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN IMPACT SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

As I sit down to write my fall report for the Voice we have just finished a very successful Impact Show with 64 juniors and 72 head representing 7 provinces. I would like to thank this committee who stuck together to see this show come to life as it was originally scheduled during the Covid years in 2020. A very special thank you to Show Chair, Laura Scott, who did an amazing job of planning the details of this show. Laura was a junior herself not long ago, so it was great to work with her in this role. Thank you to Chad Homer who stepped up in all areas of this show from halter breaking cattle to finding sponsors and giveaways for the juniors. The highlight of the show for me was standing in the show ring in the Alumni Showmanship Class being grateful for the Limousin breeders I get to work for everyday.

Our breed offers opportunities for juniors through scholarships for school, trips to other countries and of course a great junior show. I encourage all young people to become involved in our junior program and to take advantage of what we have to offer.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting was held on August 4 in conjunction with the show. We had a large turnout in person with 175 people attending the supper sponsored by Pinch Hill Limousin, Windy Gables Limousin and MNP. Again, this year we offered an online viewing option through DLMS and that coverage was sponsored by the Colours of Autumn sale group. Thank you to each of these generous sponsors. The board introduced the Limousin Forward Project at the AGM which will focus on 100K DNA testing animals 24 months and under for a reduced rate. The board was seeking feedback from members on the project and a potential rebate program to encourage performance data collection. As with most industries in this economy the Association is also looking at increasing fees. It was presented to increase Whole Herd Enrollment from $25 to $30 for the 2024 year. We appreciate the feedback provided, this will be voted on by the board this fall and communicated to members before the January 15, 2024 deadline.

BOARD OF DIRECTOR CHANGES

I would like to thank our outgoing President Wayne Burgess for the past two years as he led the Association. Wayne is a wellknown face in the Limousin industry as a breeder, partner, sales

consultant, past Limousin Voice owner and most recently CLA President. He puts his heart into everything he does and brings passion and energy for the Limousin breed. I can always count on a phone call or text with Wayne to answer a piece of history question about the breed. Wayne, thank you for your ability to act and solve problems as they came your way and above all else thank you for always believing in this breed and the Association! Your commitment to the breed is one of the reasons for its success! Wayne is completing his second term on the board and will remain an active board member. I would like to welcome to the board of Directors, Dave Lawrence of Lakeside Farms, Ont. Dave brings with him career experience in the dairy industry which will be valuable as we pursue the beef on dairy advantages and discuss the value of using genomics to make decisions.

BEEF IMPROVEMENT FEDERATION SYMPOSIUM

In early July a group of six delegates representing the Canadian Limousin Association attended the Beef Improvement Symposium held in Calgary, Alta. Myself along with Ashton Hewson, Chad Homer, Amanda Matthews, Michael Machan and Tessa Verbeek were in attendance. Travel expenses for this event were funded through the NCBA Rancher Resilience Grant Program. This is a three-day genetics focused seminar that is attended by academics, beef industry staff and producers from Canada, the USA and internationally. We participated in group and break out sessions as well as a tour of Olds College and the Smart Farm. The event concluded with a social reception hosted by Neogen. The Symposium will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 10-13, 2024 and all are welcome to attend.

REGISTRY REMINDERS

As we head into another fall show and sale season, I encourage you to use the tools offered through the Association. We post all sales on social media complimentary as well as an event listing on the website. We offer feeder calf listings, semen, and purebred listings on the website as well. If you are shopping for new genetics this fall and have questions about an animal’s percentage, parentage or DNA please use Digital Beef as a tool or reach out to the office. Masterfeeds continues to be the generous sponsor of our Show Cattle of the Year Awards. Points are collected at all Limousin shows with 30 head or more present. Please have the show representative submit the points form to the office within two weeks of the show.

The National Limousin Show will be held at Agribition on Thursday, November 23 with the National “Solid Gold” Sale the evening of November 22. Thank you to the Saskatchewan Limousin Association for hosting and planning this year. Je crois que c’est bon de commencer mon rapport en prenant note des fortes prix des veaux cet automne. S’il y a de quoi dans l’avenir on va regarder le Limousin Voice de l’automne 2023 et on va souvenir des bons prix. Dans une économie qui mets de la pression financière sur le producteur, ça va la peine de mentionner ce point positive. Dans toutes les races et tous les secteurs de l’industrie on continue de voir une diminution de la grosseur des troupeaux. Ça c’est vrai pour l’Association; sauf, on est chanceux que dans les dernières années on a réduit nos dépenses par rapport au loyer, administration et voyagement. Tous les facteurs qui nous aide à endurer les changements économique.

FAITS SAILLANTS DU CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN IMPACT SHOW

Alors que je m’assois pour écrire mon rapport pour le Voice, on vient de terminer un Impact Show qui était un grand succès, avec 64 jeunes et 72 têtes qui représentaient 7 provinces. J’aimerais remercier le comité qui ont resté ensemble pour s’assurer que ce show se tiendrait, vu qu’il était cédulé initialement pendant le Covid en 2020. Un gros merci au responsable, Laura Scott, qui a effectuées un travail incroyable en planifiant les détails de ce show. Laura était un junior il n’y a pas si longtemps, donc c’était un vrai plaisir de travailler avec elle dans ce rôle. Merci à Chad Homer qui a aidé dans plusieurs domaines, comme dompté les animaux, trouver des commanditaires et cadeaux pour les juniors. Mon Meilleur souvenir sera quand j’étais dans le ring pour la classe Showmanship pour les anciens juniors, d’être reconnaissant des éleveurs avec qui j’ai la chance de travailler avec à tous les jours.

Notre race offre des opportunités pour les juniors par les bourses pour les études, voyages à d’autres pays et surtout un show junior excellent. J’encourage tous les jeunes de s’intégrer dans notre programme junior et d’en profiter de qu’est-ce qu’on peut offrir.

ASSEMBLÉE GÉNÉRALE ANNUEL

L’assemblée générale annuel à eu lieu le 4 août en lien avec le show. On a eu 175 personnes qui ont étaient présent pour le souper commandité par Pinch Hill Limousin, Windy Gables Limousin et MNP. Encore cette année, on a offert l’option de participer sur l’internet avec DLMS, cette couverture était commanditée par le groupe de l’encan Colours of Autumn. Merci beaucoup à tous ces commanditaires généreux. Le conseil d’administration à introduit le projet Limousin Forward à l’AGA qui va concentrer sur un test de ADN 100K pour les animaux 24 mois et moins pour un frais réduit. Le conseil voulait une réponse des membres sur le projet et un rabais potentiel pour encourager la collection de data de performance. Comme plusieurs industries dans cet économie, l’Association regarde aussi la possibilité d’augmenter les frais.

Il était présenté d’augmenter le Whole Herd Enrollment de $25 à $30 pour l’année 2024. On apprécie tous l’informations fournit, ce point passera en vote par le conseil cet automne et communiquer aux membres avant la date limite du 15 janvier, 2024.

CHANGEMENTS AUX CONSEILS D’ADMINISTRATION

J’aimerais remercier notre président sortant, Wayne Burgess, pour les deux dernières années qu’il a mené l’Association. Wayne est bien connus dans l’industrie Limousin comme un éleveur, conseiller de vente, ancien propriétaire du Limousin Voice, et dernièrement comme président. Il mets tous son cœur dans n’importe quoi qu’il fasse, et il amène un passion et énergie à la race Limousin. Je peux toujours me fier sur un appel ou texto avec Wayne pour répondre à une question sur l’histoire de la race. Wayne, merci beaucoup pour ta capacité de réagir et de régler les problèmes quand ils se sont présentés, et surtout d’avoir toujours croire dans cet race et l’Association! Votre engagement à la race et un des raisons pour son succès! Wayne complète son deuxième terme sur le conseil et va continuer comme membre active du conseil. J’aimerais souhaiter le bienvenu au conseil d’administration, Dave Lawrence de Lakeside Farms, Ont. Dave apporte avec lui une expérience dans l’industrie laitière qui sera bénéfique pendant qu’on regarde les options de bœuf croisé avec vaches laitières et on discute la valeur d’utiliser la génomique pour prendre des décisions.

BEEF IMPROVEMENT FEDERATION SYMPOSIUM

En début de juillet, un groupe de six délégués de l’Association ont participé au Beef Improvement Symposium qui a eu lieu en Calgary, Alta. On approche une autre saison de show et encans, je vous encourage d’utiliser les outils offerts par l’Association. On publie tous les encans sur les médias sociaux sans frais, et aussi une liste d’évènements sur le site web. On offre les affiches de veaux d’embouche, semences, et affiches pur-sang sur le site web aussi. Si vous magasiner des génétiques neuves cet automne et que vous avez des questions sur l’animal par rapport à son pourcentage, pedigree ou ADN, svp utiliser Digital Beef comme outil pour rejoindre le bureau. Masterfeeds continue d’être notre commanditaire généreux de nos prix de Show Cattle of the Year. Les points sont amassés à tous les shows Limousin de 30 têtes ou plus présents. Svp demander à un représentant du show à soumettre le formulaire dans les deux semaines suivants le show.

Data collection recommendations and guidelines

As the days shorten and autumn colors begin to show, thoughts of many cattle producers turn to calf pre-conditioning and weaning. For seedstock producers, this time of year also means it is time to collect performance data from your herd. Collection of accurate records and their timely submission is beneficial to your breeding and marketing program in a number of ways. Canadian Limousin Association (CLA) members can leverage the industry leading DigitalBeef system for registry, performance data submission and herd analysis. The reports from DigitalBeef and the EPDs generated through CLA’s partnership with International Genetic Solutions are only as good as the data you report. To make accurate selection and breeding decisions, it is important to have reliable, high-quality data available to inform your decision making.

Accurate data collection is the first step! Having a plan for complete and accurate data collection is a must. Plan to collect and record data on every calf born on your operation. Documenting genetic merit requires that you give credit where credit is due (record the good ones) and the assignment of blame (report the bad ones, too).

A frequently held misconception is that reporting only the best calves makes my data look better. While true for the ‘average’ level of performance in your herd reports, incomplete reporting actually hurts the best animals in your operation. The missing records of poorer animals inflates the contemporary group average, and the bottom end of the good calves you report now look below average. Incomplete contemporary group reporting is akin to shooting yourself in the foot.

Precision of data collection and reporting is important too. When collecting subjective measures like calving ease score, docility scores and teat/udder suspension, it’s important to have consistency in application of the scoring rubric. If more than one person records this data in your operation, have a plan and train on how to score the data. For weight trait data a set of reliable scales are essential. Digital and analog scales should be tested for reliability to assure accurate recording.

Additionally, weighing conditions should be monitored closely. Measuring body weights of animals turns out to be more complicated than one might think. Animals should have equal feed and water consumption. If measuring large groups this can be a challenge. Make sure to coordinate feeding and processing schedules to accommodate weighing. Also, don’t forget to re-zero or clean out the chute. The accumulated manure from

a day’s processing should NOT be counted as body weight for cattle at the end of the draft. Try to make the weighing conditions as uniform as possible.

The old adage ‘you can’t manage what you don’t measure’ is as true in cattle breeding as any other business. If the trait is important to your customer or to your business, collect the data and do it with integrity. The results of the genetic evaluation system are based on data submitted by breeders. Consistent and careful data collection and submission yields more reliable and accurate EPDs. There are no short cuts to good data. It takes time and investment in people and equipment to do it well. But it pays! A breeder here in Kansas, Mushrush Red Angus, has a motto in their barn that reads ‘All the data, all the time!’ I think this speaks volumes to the commitment and obligations of a seedstock breeder.

Cattle don’t get better by themselves. To drive improvement across a range of economically important traits, you’ve got to measure them… all of them… all the time. In addition to the conditions in which cattle are measured, timing is critical too. Take the time to plan out record collection dates for traits like weaning weight or yearling weight to maximize the number of animals in a contemporary group. Bigger contemporary groups (all with equal opportunity to perform) are more powerful statistically and contain more information about genetics than small groups. Table 1 below includes a listing of traits and observation timing that I think are essentials for modern seedstock producers who are focused on the success of their customers. While not included in list, breeders should consider opportunities to measure dry matter intake and collect actual carcass data from animals in their herd or progeny of the genetics.

While the list in Table 1 is pretty long, it represents a commitment and strategy to your customers. It also provides a data stream to make and track your herd’s genetic improvement over time. Labour to collect these observations isn’t free. Make your investment yield the best dividends possible by collecting and recording accurate and timely information.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PUREBREDS

BEE ZEE ACRES

How did you get started in the Limousin breed? Bill and Mary Anne purchased the home farm in early 1979. In 1989 they purchased their first two purebred Limousin cows with heifer calves on the side from local breeders, Ron and Rita Gardiner of Gardiner Limousin. The next year we added a Limousin bull from McCallum Brothers from Iona Station. Slowly through natural selection of retaining heifer calves, the herd began to grow from those initial four purchased females. During the first 15 years, heifers were retained, animals were culled hard for temperament, fertility, foot structure, and udder quality. The herd expanded to approximately 40 cows by the early 2000’s. At that point we expanded our barn and yard space and sourced genetics from breeders from across the province to fill the newly created space. By the 2010’s we needed to expand again and grew our facility to now comfortably house the 85 purebred cows.

Without the initial help of Ron and Rita Gardiner, this would not have been possible. Ron helped us select those founding females but also helped guide us, introduce us to other breeders, trucked our calves, and made sure that Nicholas, Andrew, and Matthew could take their steers to the local fair.

Today Nicholas and Matthew are very involved in the operations at Bee Zee Acres with Nicholas making many of the decisions on the field crop and agronomy side and Matthew living at the home farm and working with the cattle, doing day-to-day chores and making breeding decisions.

What is the best piece of advice you received over the years? When we purchased our first bull at McCallum Brothers, Paul walked us through the pen and helped us identify the traits and qualities of the bulls he had available. While there were many we liked there were also many that we struggled to afford with such a small cowherd. At that time, Paul pointed out that the bull is half your herd. If you buy an average bull… you can expect average calves… buy a bull that is better than your cowherd and he will produce higher quality calves in the next generation. With that we found a bull that would improve our cows by passing their strengths on to the future calf crop.

Which animal has had the most influence in your program and why? This is one of the most difficult questions to answer because it really was a combination of three animals, a bull and two cows. The breeding combinations with them is what really changed our herd. First was Bee Zee Polled Rosco 6R – an EXLR Limited Edition son off a home raised heifer. This was a bull that finally added the rib shape to our calves that had been lacking. Exceptional feet and legs throughout his 11 years walking our pastures and low birthweights and high weaning weights made him one of the most important bulls for producing females to retain in the herd.

Rosco was just hitting his stride as a mature show bull when we purchased a female in the summer of 2007 at the Belldoon Farms “All About Females” Sale. Belldoon Sweet Sue 27S was a standout! Larger framed, bred early, and length of spine that was almost unmatched. We took her to the Royal Winter Fair that fall and were so happy to have placed 2nd in class. Her first calf – Bee Zee Polled Universe 43U was Provincial

Show Champion and qualified for the Supreme Bull show at Agribition. Her legacy in the herd runs deep as we used two of her sons as walking bulls and retained many of her daughters.

The third animal was K-View Sweetheart 7S that we purchased in the summer of 2008. This was a female that we knew well since she was the one that stood atop the class at the Royal in 2007 ahead of Belldoon Sweet Sue 27S. When we purchased her from Roger and Sarah McKay we got her, her first calf, and she was bred which resulted in our 73X cow which was the dam of multiple high sellers in our annual Bull and Heifer Sale.

All three of these animals added the length, depth, rib shape and eye-appeal that was challenging to breed into the herd. They never drew away from our focus on docility, soundness, and udder quality but closed the gap on the traits we were striving to develop in our calf crop.

What makes you most excited about the future of the Limousin breed? The future of the Limousin breed is very bright and offers a lot of promise for many reasons. Limousin cattle have long been the trendsetters for yield and quality of carcass. With challenges over the years, quality and yield are two factors that are always important at every step of the supply chain. Commercial cattlemen can look to Limousin as being the choice for outcrossed genetics, not sacrificing calving ease, fertility, or the maternal strengths that they need for their herds.

What is your favourite time of year on your operation? Our favourite season of the year is always calving time. New sire groups, fresh baby calves, and the brisk cold weather is always refreshing. The hope and optimism from the first calf of the year really sparks an excitement for the months to come as we watch them grow and develop.

Where do you see your operation in 5 years? In five years, I hope we are still doing what we have been doing for the past 10 years. Our Easter Monday Bull and Heifer Sale is the highlight of the year where we are greeted by past buyers looking for their next bull or replacement female. We are honoured to have new faces walk through the barns to view or purchase our cattle that often are there because they have seen our genetics work for their neighbour or friend. Building a relationship with our customers, standing in the barns and evaluating cattle, and trying to breed the next great one has provided us many friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

Ethan & Dominique Gerrits, Halls Harbour, Nova Scotia

The Maritime Limousin Association and Canadian Limousin Association welcome new members Ethan and Dominique Gerrits of Shoreline Limousin.

They started their farm on the North Mountain in the beautiful Annapolis Valley near Halls Harbour, Nova Scotia.

Ethan works as a farm equipment operator for Bragg Lumber, a company that has over 1,600 acres of carrots located across the Annapolis Valley. Dominique works as a community nurse for the VON and provides a wide range of healthcare services within her community.

Ethan is a 4th generation farmer and grew up on a farm his father had with chickens, commercial cattle and hogs. The Gerrits family arrived from Holland post WWII to settle in Nova Scotia, where Ethan's Opa bought a farm with land located in Sheffield Mills, Kings County.

The farm where Ethan and Dominique now reside was originally Dominique’s family farm. Dominique's maiden name was Foote and the farm has been in her family since

the late 18th century. Ethan and Dominique decided to buy her grandmother’s home and re-build the farm from the ground up after being abandoned for 5 years.

When Ethan was 20 and Dominique was 19, they decided they were going to reestablish the old farm and bring new life to the historical family farm. They hope to someday have kids to enjoy the farm with. Ethan and Dominique are both very passionate about livestock and the Limousin breed is where that passion began.

What makes you excited to be a part of the CLA as a member?

We are excited to be apart of the CLA because we look forward to meeting new people in the Limousin industry and learning from a lot of great other farmers along the way. We accept any input from the Limousin community and look forward to the future development as we learn about the Limousin breed.

What motivates you in your operation going forward? Our motivation is looking forward to the time where we will be recognized and respected for our product in the industry with our professional, high-quality line of Limousin cattle. Slowly

building our herd we hope to create a successful showcase of high-quality genetics to celebrate for many, many years to come.

Tell us about your herd? We bought our first two bred heifers from Bee Zee Acres in 2021 to start our Limousin herd. Winter of 2022, we had our first bull and heifer calf. We also bought one heifer from After Hours Limousin. In 2023 we had two heifer calves and one bull calf. We recently purchased two heifers from Payne Livestock this year and are really looking forward to the upcoming sale season.

What is everyone’s ‘niche’ within your operation? Ethan looks after the pedigrees, genetics and final selection of the individual animal. Dominique takes care of the marketing, grooming, fitting and showmanship.

When the work is done, what does your family enjoy? When the work is done, we both enjoy Sea Bass fishing, four-wheeling, hanging out with friends, going out to dinner, watching the cows graze and getting a head start on next years firewood.

MEET THE 2023/2024 CLA PRESIDENT

Ashton Hewson Ashton and his wife Kendra own and operate Double B Cattle Co. at Unity, Sask. He grew up on the family farm at Cut Knife raising Limousin cattle. This is where his love of cattle and the industry began. His time in 4-H spending time alongside cattle and people who shared a similar interest helped develop his passion. Making the Limousin breed better, supporting the industry, and building lifelong friendships and business relationships are important to him.

Ashton brings passion, a strong work ethic, and energy to put new ideas into action to his role as President. Congratulations to Ashton as he steps into his new role leading the Association.

MEET THE 2023/2024 CLA VICE PRESIDENT

Chad Homer Chad, wife Jenn and daughters Jaelyn and Blakely along with the Homer family operate Pinch Hill Limousin at Stittsville, Ont. They raise Limousin seedstock along with a select group of Simmentals, Shorthorns and Angus. Cattle are marketed through numerous annual consignment sales and privately to both commercial and purebred breeders alike. They put large selection pressure on cattle that are maternally designed yet backed by performance and results.

Chad enjoys being involved within the industry with youth development, provincial and national boards as well as serving as Chair of the Beef Show for the Royal Winter Fair. He enjoys exhibiting cattle and attending sales across the country. Chad looks forward to watching his two young daughters grow up within this great industry as their 4-H and junior careers start.

Chad brings a solutions-based approach to his role on the board and is always willing to step into leadership positions to move projects forward. Along with his role as the Vice-President he is also the Chair of the Breed Improvement Committee, Registry Committee and the 2024 Impact Show Committee.

Dave Lawrence We are happy to announce incoming director Dave Lawrence of Lakeside Farm Durham, Ont. to the CLA Board of Directors.

"Together with my family we operate Lakeside Farm. We have been using Limousin bulls for 40 years and transitioned into a purebred Limousin herd for the last 20 years. Our herd focus is producing quality, sound females and a few select bulls. I am always trying to improve the herd through sire selection (AI and herd bull) and acquiring choice females through Limousin sales. Off the farm, I manage a 70 head robot dairy herd.

My three daughters have taken a keen interest in the farm. They enjoy showing their Limousin heifers at 4-H, Ontario Limousin and Canadian Junior Limousin events. Over the past number of years, they have made friendships within the breed that will continue to grow.

Farming has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I always look forward to chatting with fellow members at sales, meetings, and other Limousin events. I am looking forward to meeting new friends and catching up with others. Joining the board is an opportunity to expand my network of like-minded breeders."

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION

Well, that’s a wrap! The 2023 Impact Show in Spencerville, Ont. was a huge hit. Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, judges and everyone who made the show possible. The show started on August 2 with registration and some fun icebreakers led by the CJLA board. All of the members also attended the CJLA AGM where new board members were elected and the herd building lottery program was introduced. Congratulations to newly elected board members Carly Arnold of Nova Scotia and Laura Seward of Manitoba. We are also happy to welcome back to the board for another two-year term Jocelyn Kennedy, Taylor Annett and Emma Qually. Thank you to our outgoing President Kira Axley as she graduates from the program.

The Herd Building information is available online or you can contact one of the board members for more information, nevertheless it should be an exciting new opportunity for junior members. Thursday contained oral marketing, judging and two tours. The 1000 Islands Boat Cruise which was windy for those on the top of the boat but still tons of fun and it was great to see all of the amazing sites. The other tour was at Tackaberry Collections which for those who have the same mind as me had nothing to do with berries! There were twenty-some buildings filled with antique cars, semis, trucks, snowmobiles and about anything you could think of including a past President’s car and snowmobiles from Die Hard. It was an amazing experience for all who attended and a huge thank you is needed to the Tackaberry crew for letting us check out their place.

Friday had team fitting or rather team washing as well as public speaking and a photography workshop with Jill Renton. Jill did an amazing job and I think I can speak for everyone when I say her tips and tricks changed my photography game. The new 100K Neogen Heifer Jackpot which is based 50% on EPDs and 50% on phenotype occurred for the very first time. Congratulations to the winners and thank you judges and Neogen! After supper on Friday, everyone made their way to their beds in preparation for show day on Saturday. A show day that in my opinion went extremely well and a huge shoutout to all the winners and judges! Overall, the show was one like I’ve personally never experienced. The different countryside and the plentiful tours and activities made for a fantastic week. As some may know I have left the board but I am excited to see what the new press reporter and board members bring to the table. Thank you to everyone who made this year's show possible and supported the CJLA. We may not say it out loud enough but us juniors are extremely thankful for everyone’s support over the years and making the CJLA programs possible! Plan to join us next year August 15-18, 2024 in Lindsay, Ont. for the 2024 Impact Show!

2023 CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN IMPACT SHOW SKILLS COMPETITIONS

The Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show was held August 2-5, 2023 in Spencerville, Ont. 64 exhibitors and 88 head from 7 provinces were in attendance.

In addition to conformation and showmanship, the four-day event also included judging, marketing, public speaking, industry quiz, pack the pail and team fitting competitions. Exhibitors also submitted graphic design, photography and artwork entries. An impressive set of artwork was auctioned off at the banquet and all funds raised went towards the show. Junior and their families experienced a boat cruise of the Thousand Islands during the week. They also toured the impressive Tackaberry Truck Collection which was a highlight for many of the juniors.

The Show Committee Chair was CJLA alumni Laura Scott who did a fantastic job of putting on a great event! Thank you to Laura and the show committee for their hard work and dedication to this show. Thank you to the generosity of sponsors who made the show possible. We invite juniors age 21 and younger to join us next year August 15-18, 2024 in Lindsay, Ont. for another great show!

The CJLA Impact 100K Jackpot show was generously sponsored by Neogen Canada and the top 12 finalists each received cash prizes. The first of this kind for the Limousin breed in Canada, the 100K Jackpot was judged both on EPDs prior to entering the ring, and phenotype in the show ring. All entries had to have a DNA test completed through the CLA prior to the show. 50% of the final score was based on EPDs, and the other 50% on their phenotype, judged in the show ring. Panel judges Mike Geddes of Clarksburg, Ont, Cody Miller of Westlock, Alta. and Ashton Hewson of Unity, Sask. sorted through 36 head of cattle. PEEL MEAT PACKERS INDUSTRY PROFILE

Northwest of Kitchener, near the town of Drayton, Ont. is a unique family-run business where Limousin influence cattle shine. Delmer Martin, along with his brother Philip Martin and their father LeRoy Martin manage the continually growing operation. LeRoy had a dairy farm originally, and Delmer and Philip grew up milking 40 cows. To keep himself busy in the winter months, LeRoy built a small kill floor and cut room in the corner of his equipment shed, and started processing animals for their own use and for his family and friends. Word quickly spread about LeRoy’s small but quickly-growing business, and as more local abattoirs shut down, LeRoy found himself in a position to renovate almost all of the equipment shed into a cooler, a barn and a kill floor to focus only on slaughter with no cutting or processing. From 1991 to 2005 the slaughter business and dairy farm were running side by side. There were many challenges and obstacles to overcome along the way and eventually a decision had to be made as to which business the family would continue as the days simply were not long enough to do it all.

“My father LeRoy asked me at age 16 if I would rather milk cows or work in the slaughter facility,” Delmer recalls, “At this age I knew what I would rather do.”

The dairy herd was sold and a new slaughter plant was built in 2005. The tie stall barn that was used for milk cows was converted to be used as a holding barn.

The business was originally given the name Peel Sausage. Peel is the township where the Martin’s reside and originally, they were in the business of making sausage. The name has now changed to Peel Meat Packers to encompass their ever-growing business that no longer includes the production of sausage.

“The area knows us as Peel so it was decided to keep it,” Delmer says of the name Peel Meat Packers.

The slaughter and processing business is only one aspect of their enterprise. R F Land and Livestock encompasses the livestock production and cropping side of their business.

“We found it hard to find a name that was related to the area because most of the nice names were taken, with a farm operation on every 100 acres here in the local area, lots of names are needed,” Delmer states, “My full name is Delmer Roy Martin and my wife’s is Susan Faye Martin, so we used the R from Roy and F from Faye for R F Land and Livestock.”

Delmer gives credit to his brother Philip Martin who manages the day-to-day operations of the livestock and crop production business R F Land and Livestock alongside their father LeRoy. The Martin’s grow all of the crops used to feed their animals. They farm 700 acres of ground to produce corn, wheat, soybeans, corn silage, hay, straw and various other forage crops. They also have the ability to process their crops for feed.

Delmer Martin wants more Limousin cattle to feed in Ontario

Soybeans are pressed and heated to remove oil and cooked to destroy any antinutritional factors. They then combine the soybeans with ground corn, vitamins and minerals. They feel it is valuable to process the corn resulting in better feed efficiency and better grades in the plant. The resulting mix is then run through their extruder to cook the starches which increases the digestibility of the concentrate. This, combined with homegrown hay and sileages, produces the complete balanced nutrition their cattle require.

Presently, the Martin’s have 1,200 cattle on feed ranging from 700 lb. to finish weight and they all have Limousin influence. They have also brought heifers into the operation to fill some of the spots where cattle were not as available. Delmer is keen to continue to source quality Limousin influence feeders in quantity from across Canada.

“I have always liked the yield of the Limousin breed,” Delmer says, “Less product in the bone barrel and more in the pocket.”

The Martin’s enjoy working with Limousin feeders directly to build a relationship.

“Being able to visit them and see what they have throughout the growing season gives us a glimpse of their management and also gives us a better idea of what breeds their cows are,” Delmer states, “We want to learn from the hard-working ranches and listen to the issues they face as a producer. When the cattle hit the market, we have a very good idea what is being sold.”

In 2023 Peel Meat Packers was processing approximately 400 cattle and 500 lambs and goats on a weekly basis. Their provincially inspected facility continues to also offer custom slaughter, chilling and aging for beef, veal, lamb and goats. They are also licensed to process farm raised bison, water buffalo, elk and deer as well as offering Halal slaughter and meats. They then ship to the butcher of the client’s choice for cutting and wrapping.

Delmer took over the management of the meat operations in 2015. Significant expansion has occurred in recent years with the cooler doubled in 2016 and the holding barn doubled in 2022. Plans are on the drawing board for further expansion in the coming year. The plans for 2024 also include a new reporting system that will allow for information to be given back to ranches on the performance of their cattle.

“We plan to expand as the needs arise and support the local community the best we can and support the ranches,” Delmer says, “Farm gate to the dinner plate.”

Delmer thanks his father LeRoy for his mentorship as well as Tim Andrew and family who have helped connect them with producers of Limousin influence feeders.

“I find the Limousin breed has a great way of enhancing some of the other breeds out there,” Delmer comments, “Limousin seems to be on the leaner side and some other breeds fatty, the Limousin cross takes some of the extra fat off and gives them more shape.”

Anna Haupt shares the trials and tribulations of farm life with consumers through social media

Social media is undoubtedly a powerful tool and despite the plethora of content most of us could do without, there are some real gems to be found on this digital platform. The Facebook page 'Dairy Farm "Tails" from Moo to You' and accompanying Instagram page mccutcheon_ farm_tails are absolute wheat among the chaff and do a standout job of connecting consumers to the farm. The face behind these accounts is none other than Anna Haupt, a past Canadian Junior Limousin Association member with strong Limousin roots and continued ties to the breed.

Anna and her husband Mark, along with their four children, milk 60 cows with a robot in a loose housed free stall barn south of Hamilton, Ont. They purchased the fully operational dairy in July of 2019. Prior to that they were operating a butcher shop, small abattoir and storefront.

One of the most unique facets of their operation is that Anna documents a great deal of their day to

day through Facebook and Instagram. This started back when they were running the butcher shop.

“We attended farmer’s markets in the city and we were pretty taken aback by some of the questions we got pertaining to farming and food. I think as farmers we are all aware of a lot of the common myths and perceptions that circulate about food production but when we were faced with it directly it surprised us just how big that disconnect really was,” Anna recalls.

Anna started a Facebook page for their butcher shop and farm with a focus on letting customers know what was going on at the farm throughout the year and why.

“There was a lot of interest and many posts sparked great conversations with our customers when they came in to the shop. When we sold the butcher shop and were heading to the dairy farm, I had many people inquire if I’d still be posting on social media

because they enjoyed following the page so much. I decided to start a Facebook page for the dairy farm and invited our previous customers to follow. Many of the followers today are still previous customers.”

Anna posts about the day-to-day happenings on the farm and if there is a certain food related hot topic in the media at the time, she will offer her own perspective if she feels she has something of value to add. Her posts are clever, wellwritten, and informative.

“It’s just a way of connecting and showing people what we do and that we are humans. We have a lot in common with consumers, we are consumers ourselves, with families and shared values and I think that’s really important to get across to people. My follower base isn’t huge, about 3,000, which is pretty small compared to a lot of others. I don’t necessarily push for more followers; I just want to stay connected with the ones I have in a meaningful way. I have had a couple of videos go a little viral which I find really stressful actually because all of a sudden, for whatever reason, a particular post reaches a bunch

of new people and you get a bunch of activist comments and messages. I would much rather that the page just grows quietly through the shares and likes of current followers. When a post moves beyond that circle it can get messy and I just don’t have the headspace for that. I typically will reply once to a negative comment and then leave it. If someone with extreme views finds their way onto the page, it’s an automatic block. I’m not interested in engaging with extremists whose minds are made up, they’re entitled to their point of view but their nastiness is not something I want to deal with. For anyone who genuinely has an interest in seeing what we do, I’m happy to share what I can.”

The majority of followers are women aged 30-50, explaining why posts about her experiences as a mom on the farm are extra well-received. Calving posts are also popular and she has shared posts about why they choose to use Limousin beef sires when breeding their lower end Holstein cows for easier calving, and ultimately beefier calves.

“I was really worried about sharing births at first but I share that more now. I love animal births myself but I wasn’t sure if the general public would appreciate it as much as I do. I started with some great pictures of wet, freshly birthed calves or goats and the response was good. But I remember how hesitant I was to post the first picture of a cow actually in the process of birthing a calf. I sat with the picture for quite a while wondering if I should post it or not. Since then, I have started to post actual videos of calves being born and people really seem to love having the opportunity to see something they normally might never see. It seems like such a normal thing for us on the farm but the vast majority of people have never seen anything being born. I have also shared pictures of death as well and, more so, when we had the butcher shop, of things like hanging carcasses. It’s all a part of connecting the dots and realizing there is nothing icky or disturbing about those things, they are normal processes that everyone could benefit from being more connected with.”

More recently Anna has started a farm Instagram page too.

“That is totally different than Facebook and a lot less wordy, which is hard for me,” Anna laughs, “I have always hated ‘selfies’ but I do them more than I ever have in the past because for some reason people seem to really like to see the person communicating with them, I think it gives some authenticity and a better sense of connection.”

Connection and support within their own circle is also important to Anna and Mark.

“I think supporting each other is really important. It doesn’t change the struggles but knowing that you aren’t alone is just somehow really huge.”

Anna credits long-time friends, some who are also young farmers and some who are in other professions, with showing them a great deal of support, “Never underestimate the value

of a small but mighty group of close friends who are equally busy at life. They get it and they have a way of floating in once in a while at the most important moments to help you pull through or to celebrate the little wins with you.”

Anna and Mark are equally thankful to have neighbours who welcomed them with open arms and are always there to help when needed. Fellow dairy producers in the county have also been welcoming.

“It was something I wasn’t really expecting and it has been one of the most meaningful things to experience, just that feeling that there is support there and that you aren’t an outsider. I think it's because there are several producers in our area who are a similar age to us and at various stages of starting out on their own farms and it is so refreshing to be able to talk openly about the struggles and the worries and know that you aren’t alone in those things.”

Anna also has a good friend who is a dairy farmer by Ottawa that has been her go-to for many questions and inspiration.

Anna’s parents continue to manage their Bennville Farm herd of 30 registered purebred Limousin cows at Hagersville, Ont. The Limousin herd has always been Anna’s mom Anita’s passion and she has worked diligently over the years to build up a high-quality cowherd valuing EPDs and performance data in addition to traditional Limousin characteristics in phenotype. She has also run a bull test for many years.

“If I could get our dairy herd to that kind of consistently good animals, both phenotypically and performance wise, my goals as a breeder will be met,” Anna comments, “My parents have always been big role models for me in terms of love for the industry and work ethic. A part of me always hopes that I can make my parents proud.”

Looking at what the future has in store, Mark and Anna intend to continue to grow the dairy herd. The new barn built in 2021 has space to put in a second milking robot and enough stalls to grow the herd as they are able to.

“We bid on quota every month but right now it’s only really small increments that we are able to buy, so it’s a slow grow right now. Our goal for the herd is longevity. I’d love a herd of old, hardworking cows and I hope that the comfort that the new barn offers will allow cows to remain productive longer.”

They would also like to add to their land base, however making the most of what they have is the current focus. They are on heavy clay ground that takes a long time to dry and then turns hard so would like to start tiling the land they currently have to allow them to get out on fields sooner.

“I admire how optimistic Mark is,” Anna says, “things worry him too but he always takes them in stride and finds ways to enjoy the present. He is one of the hardest working men that I know and we compliment each other really well. He has never been afraid to make the decisions that put each other and our family first. Together we have found ways to accomplish some things we never, ever would have thought possible and we can truly say those are our accomplishments.”

AMERICAN LIMOUSIN FOUNDATION REPORT

NALF highly values its relationship with the Canadian Limousin Association. For years our members have shared genetics into herds throughout both countries and we look forward to the continuation of that effort into the future.

In the continual effort to provide a high quality and data driven herdbook at NALF, our board continues to push for new trait development along with improved EPD accuracy in the information on the genetic evaluation that is run through IGS for membership. New EPDs will be released later this fall that will be added to the Limousin trait deck that directly relate to continually improving feed efficiency and identifying traits that are a major cost to cattle production at both the cow/calf and feedlot sectors of the beef industry.

With the help of our consultant, Dr. Robert Weaber and the IGS team, NALF will be incorporating 5 new EPDs. Once those are published, we will follow with 2 new indexes for Limousin that include a terminal and maternal index to be published later this year and will be provided weekly on DigitalBeef in our genetic evaluation.

Once the Dry Matter intake EPD is completed and fully released by IGS, NALF will include EPDs on Average Daily Gain (ADG), Feed Conversion (FCR) and a Cost-of Gain EPD as it directly relates to identifying high performing cattle in the feeding industry in addition to cattle that would also excel in sustainability via the ability to track and mate for high performing cattle that excel in

feed conversion. With continued high feed cost throughout the nation, the ability to supply seedstock to the commercial cattle industry that help reduce production cost with cattle that are the most efficient feed converters will continue to be in demand.

As usual, cattle will still need to be sufficient for growth, fertility, maternal and carcass traits moving forward to be economically viable for the cow/calf sector, feedyard and packing business. This is also the reason that the NALF board is intent on providing an updated terminal index which will be more reflective of today’s changing fed cattle market along with a new maternal index for the Limousin breed. The existing Mainstream Terminal Index will continue to be published. The new maternal index will be published after IGS completes its EPD on mature cow weight later this year. Both indexes will be structured and built through the IGENDEC program that is owned by the Beef Improvement Federation.

Accuracies are also improving on our EPDs on two fronts. Genomics and updated marker effects continue to improve the predictive capability of our EPDs on all fronts. Secondly, and unique to the Limousin breed is the vast improvement of data capture on phenotypes in the Limousin herdbook, namely on carcass traits with the inclusion of thousands of cattle that have actual carcass data provided through Wulf Cattle the past 2 ½ years on the BeefBuilder® cattle. The herdbook currently has right at 150,000 carcass phenotypes for REA, CW, YG, BF,

primarily provided by Wulf Cattle that flow through all the related pedigrees in the NALF herdbook. This has dramatically improved accuracies on Limousin carcass traits EPDs in the past few years.

This would make NALF the leader in the industry for the capture of carcass phenotypes and it should continue to grow exponentially into the future thanks to the effort and contribution of Wulf Cattle and other members that are supplying harvest data. If you don’t have access to obtaining actual carcass data on your cattle it is also extremely valuable to be ultrasounding your cattle to obtain carcass data for REA, BF, Marbling and PYG. This scan data collection is also extremely valuable to increasing your accuracies on carcass traits for your herd. It is truly fitting that the Limousin breed, also known as the carcass breed, is now a leader in data capture for carcass traits.

Accuracies on the Gestation Length EPD were also vastly improved this past summer via the same process that was utilized in the carcass trait phenotype collection. With the help of Dr. Enns at Colorado State University with assistance from Dr. Weaber, thousands of actual gestation length phenotypes were also incorporated into our genetic evaluation. Accuracies of related phenotypes in as much as .2-.3 after these were incorporated into the run during the month of July.

We are still engaged in our NALRF research project with our commercial ranch cooperators in Montana. The cattle will be given pre-weaning

and weaning shots this fall and will be shipped to South Dakota State University in early November to gather feed performance and carcass data. We are looking forward to working with the crew at SDSU and will keep you abreast of results as they are generated.

Given the fact that the USDA July Cattle Inventory Report still shows no sign of heifer retention at this point, low feeder cattle supplies will translate to continued strong prices for all classes of cattle the next few years. Until sustained moisture conditions improve throughout much of the country expansion will be delayed in the commercial cattle sector. We will see continued declines in beef production in the next 2 years and it will be even more pronounced when heifer retention starts, and the cow slaughter declines out of the weekly federally inspected slaughter levels. This will lead to continued high cattle prices and also will require more tonnage from cattle that have the genetics to be more feed efficient and create additional pounds of product to keep up with demand in spite of this inflationary time frame.

We are also looking forward to our Limousin pen show at the newly built yards in the National Western complex. Early indications are that we will have substantial entries in the 2025 show, and we always look forward to seeing fellow Limousin exhibitors and breeders from Canada. We look forward to the continued relationship with CLA and its membership moving into the future.

NEWS BRITISH COLUMBIA

It was a very exciting summer for Limousin in BC this year. The breed was very well represented across the province with events, exhibitions, and 4-H shows from the Okanagan to the Peace. There were many banners won by 4-H members including both Grand Champion and Reserve Champion steer honours going to purebred Limousin steers in the Quesnel District. The steers were purchased from Nor-Alta Limousin and exhibited by Shayla and Isabelle Plante. The Champion and Reserve heifers were also Purebred Limousin projects at the Quesnel 4-H Show and Sale. Those home-grown heifers out of the Pinnacle View program were owned and exhibited by Andie and Austyn Kishkan.

It was also a great summer for Limousin at the various exhibitions around the province. RG Farms of Spirit River, Alta. received the Grand Champion and later SUPREME CHAMPION honours at the Dawson Creek Exhibition with their cow calf pair. The cow was Pinnacle’s Jazzed 23J with her Wulfs Blackhawk heifer calf at foot, RG Lexus 2L. This pair is now eligible for the CN Supreme Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition in November. Limousin was also very well represented at the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong, BC over Labour Day weekend. In the all-breeds Stars of the Future female futurity, Pinnacle’s Lady Gaga 28L was third over all in the first-year class, and Pinnacle’s Kahleesi 14K was the Champion second year bred heifer, both owned and exhibited by Pinnacle View Limousin of Quesnel, BC. At that same exhibition Pinnacle’s Long Beach 23L was crowned Grand Champion in the Sires of Tomorrow all breeds bull calf jackpot.

Rounding out the summer was the Open House and junior beef clinics hosted by Pinnacle View Limousin at their farm in Quesnel, BC on September 9. What started out as a brainstorming idea back in the spring to host a little junior clinic in conjunction with their bi-annual open house, turned into a massive event drawing over 70 kids from all over

BC! Juniors from Vancouver Island all the way to Vanderhoof, and one from Alberta, gathered at Pinnacle View to attend the judging, fitting, and showmanship clinics while the parents they drug with them enjoyed cattle displays, tours, and draw prizes. They fed over 150 people with a feast of brisket and drunk chicken, salads, and dessert. The kids were each given a swag bag and then split into three groups to rotate through the clinics throughout the day. The event was very generously supported by many local businesses so they had many draw prizes to give away to the adults and the kids, with the grand prize being a heifer calf!

After the juniors completed each clinic, they were able to put their name into the drum roller for their chance to win the heifer calf of their choice. There were 5 heifer calves to choose from, 2 purebred limos, 1 purebred Charolais, 1 Lim-Flex heifer, and 1 Char/Limo cross heifer. The anticipation built throughout the day with each kid carefully analyzing the draw heifers to see which one they would pick if they were the lucky winner! After the clinics were all done, everyone gathered around the carrousel of draw heifers, jittery and jumping with excitement! First, there was awards given to the top 3 juniors who participated in the judging class that followed their judging clinic, then over 20 draw prizes were given away to the kids, and then their names were returned to drum roller for the drawing of the final grand prize! The winner was Sylvie Schimann of Prince George, BC. She was absolutely beaming with excitement and it took her over an hour (with consultation from her family) to finally choose the heifer that she was going to take home. She chose the purebred Charolais heifer and although it wasn’t the Limo she chose, this event will be table conversation for months to come! It was a smashing success and the positive feedback from everyone who attended made the hours and hours of preparation very well worth it!!

The short dry summer has brought on harvest a lot faster than we anticipated but here it is September and harvest is moving along quite nicely. Calves are weaned and show preparations has started for most producers.

The SLA held their annual meeting at Lucky Lake on July 8 when the Boon Family hosted a farm/cattle tour, a barbequed lunch and the SLA annual meeting. It was another hot dry day but after lunch, President Ashton Hewson chaired the meeting and elections for key positions were held. Kyle Payne was nominated Vice President; Janet Hale will remain as Treasurer and Jean Hewson as Secretary. Other directors are: Wyatt Dyck, Carey Hirschfeld, Terry Hepper, Jay Bohrson, Jeff Yorga, Andrew Webb and Eric Martens.

The end of 2022 marked the last issue with Cheryl McPherson as the very capable editor of our provincial magazine, the News and Views. Her creativity, attention, and effort to go above and beyond produced an excellent quality Limousin publication. She has made an everlasting impact on our provincial associations’ success and the breed in general and for that, we are truly grateful. We are truly proud of our provincial publication which had three issues in 2022 and are actively looking for a new editor.

Two very exciting things are currently happening in our province. In the last couple of years, there have not been enough Limousin cattle to be able to have a show at Manitoba Ag-Ex. However, there has been an effort to breathe some new life into this show and it is looking like we will have the numbers to have a show this year. Please get those entries in and join us in Brandon October 25-28. The Limousin show will be on Thursday, October 26. The Manitoba Junior Limousin Association is also reorganizing. They held a virtual meeting on August 23 with 7 members attending. They will also be holding a reorganizing meeting at Manitoba Ag-Ex. 1 Gary Anderson sadly passed away on April 18, 2023 as a result of complications from Lewy Body dementia. Gary farmed near Bethune, Sask. with his wife Karen and four children Geoff, Ginny, Becky and Bobbi. Gary was heavily involved with Agribition, beginning as an exhibitor in 1979. Gary’s intelligence, willingness to learn, and dedication to the industry quickly moved him from exhibitor to committee member to board member to executive member to President. He was the only President of Agribition to win a livestock Grand Champion Banner while sitting as active President. Many memories were made at Agribition both professionally and personally as the entire family spent so much time there together over the years. Gary taught his children how to fit, show, and carry themselves. He instilled the idea that having confidence in yourself was the first step of success. Gary won countless awards including Limousin Breeder of the Year, Limousin Leader of the Year, Award of Merit for Advertising and Marketing Excellence, Saskatchewan Limousin Association Distinguished Service Award, Canadian Livestock Industry Leader of the Year and most recently, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal. CANADIAN CATTLE ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The return of Parliament and fall run is just around the corner. The summer months did not see our team at the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) slow down on the advocacy front. We continued to push on key policy files and activities during Parliament’s summer recess to keep our asks top of mind going into the Fall session.

Top of mind is the uncertainty due to adverse weather conditions that continues to plague farmers and ranchers across Canada. CCA is monitoring the situation along with our provincial member associations to better understand the impacts on cattle producers and support needed. Since Minister MacAulay’s return to the agriculture portfolio, we have communicated regularly with him on the need for impacted cattle producers to have timely access to the Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision as well as support through AgriRecovery. As I type this, the Government of Saskatchewan has stepped up with their AgriRecovery announcement. I hope by the time this is being read that a finalized AgriRecovery response has rolled out from British Columbia (B.C.) to Manitoba.

In late August, Minister MacAulay announced the initial regions eligible for the LTD provision. This announcement was welcome news to producers in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. We are aware from conversations around our board table and with provincial member associations that some impacted areas were not included in the preliminary list. If your region was not included in the preliminary list and has been impacted by extreme weather conditions, please contact your provincial cattle association to let them know. In turn, CCA will communicate this information to Minister MacAulay’s office to help ensure all impacted producers are eligible.

The trade file has been a hot one for most of the summer with our team engaging Parliamentarians and their staff on key priorities. On Bill

C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), we continue to emphasize the ramifications this bill could have on our economy and cattle producers with Senators and will carry this message through the fall session. CCA has ramped up advocacy efforts on trade with the United Kingdom (UK), particularly with the announcement of the UK accession into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

In early September, CCA in partnership with the National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) and the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) launched a campaign called “Say No to a Bad Deal” so grassroots producers and industry partners could tell our federal government that Canada needs to delay the UK joining the CPTPP until our barriers into the UK market can be addressed.

We are not saying no to trade. We are saying no to a bad deal that puts Canadian farmers and ranchers at an unfair disadvantage. Supporting the UK accession to the CPTPP weakens the agreement as the trade barriers to the UK for Canadian beef and pork have not been addressed.

The UK continues to have unfettered access to the Canadian market for their meat products, while Canada is unable to get our high-quality meat products into their market. We are asking for reciprocal access for Canadian meat into the UK’s market. We are proud of the progressive trading standards and science-based rules established through CPTPP which ensures fair market access for participating countries. We do not think those standards should be set aside for the UK accession.

What drives much of our motivation to keep pushing on our key policy priorities as a board is the desire to leave a vibrant industry for our next generation of cattle producers. Despite the uncertainty facing cattle producers, I’m very optimistic when we see the caliber of our up-and-coming leaders.

This was especially evident during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) in August, where activities throughout the week shone a spotlight on our young leaders who are poised to make a difference in our industry. We saw 24 hopefuls vying for a spot in the next class of the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) program through insightful discussions on important industry topics during the Selections process.

We also celebrated and congratulated this year’s CYL graduates at the opening reception of the conference. It was great to see so many mentors attend to recognize the dedication, hard work, and potential of their mentees. I’d like to personally thank this year’s mentors for the important role that they play in the success of our leadership program and in the development of our young leaders.

The CYL graduation ceremony also saw the unveiling of the Reg Schellenberg Next Generation Legacy Award by the Canadian Cattle Foundation and the Schellenberg family. This award will be presented annually to recognize the exceptional qualities and contributions of a CYL graduate, who embodies the same dedication and leadership for the Canadian beef sector that Reg displayed. The award included a belt buckle donated by the Schellenberg family ranch, Perrin Ranching 1990 LTD, and a travel bursary to attend the 2024 Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference.

Congratulations to Carling Matejka from Ponoka, Alta. for being named the first recipient of this award. We know that Reg would be so proud of this year’s graduating class.

Lastly, it was great to participate in the Canadian Cattle Youth Council annual general meeting (AGM) at CBIC. We appreciate the ideas and perspectives that are brought forward by the Council to policy discussions at our various committee meetings and at the board table. I’d like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by Charlene Yungblut (Ontario) during her term as the Council’s President and welcome Scott Gerbrandt (Saskatchewan) who was elected President of the Council at the AGM. JOHNE’S DISEASE

Identification Specifically in Purebred Herds

Johne’s disease, pronounced “Yonees” is a very slow developing insidious disease that can creep into your herd. The classic case is one where diarrhea and weight loss continue over a period of time. This is in spite of having a good appetite and nothing else wrong. It has a very long incubation period of about two years or longer. Experimentally they have been able to induce clinical signs as early as eighteen months but the average age in most cow herds is five years or so. It is caused by a mycobacterium organism and the spread between animals is usually the fecal to oral route. This is why cows will often spread it to their calves because the organism is being shed in the manure. Although shedding can be intermittent it is young animals that often contract it from shedding mothers at under six months of age. A lot of transmission probably happens at birth or shortly thereafter. It is also likely that shedding goes up in a pregnant carrier close to, during, and after calving. This is from the whole stress and immunosuppression of the cow at this time.

Purebred herds have several reasons to be hyper vigilant for this disease and take steps to stamp it out if it is detected. First off, the value of purebred cattle and the fact that selling offspring into other herds including breeding bulls is your livelihood and reputation. That, plus the fact that the stigma associated with the disease can be damaging. Purebred producers often buy calves, bred females and bulls from other breeders so are introducing outside genetics, which is a good thing. There is always a possibility of introducing something like Johne’s disease. Most commercial breeders only bring in their herd sires, therefore maintaining a somewhat closed herd as far as females are concerned, particularly if they raise their own replacements. That is not possible or desired in the purebred industry and so in the unlikely event Johne’s were ever to be diagnosed I want to offer some steps to help you start to eradicate it.

Anytime you have an animal with unexplained weight loss, try to get an actual diagnosis. Especially if you are seeing diarrhea in a

mature animal Johne’s should be a possibility in the back of your mind or your veterinarian’s. A manure sample should be checked to confirm or rule out Johne’s disease, even if the animal is going to be culled. If the animal dies and is thin, please get an autopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Have a discussion with your veterinarian and do testing if need be. One of the issues is that diagnostics can be challenging as positive cases are not always picked up. A fecal PCR test which measures the DNA of Mycobacterium in the manure is quite accurate in clinical cases and cases that are soon to be clinical. Fecal culturing is the gold standard but takes a long time (a few months) to confirm so it is seldom done anymore except in research.

The biggest thing is don’t panic about getting testing done and if the test does come back positive and the animal was purchased it behooves you to notify the breeder that raised the calf. It may be a dead end where the source can’t be clearly found. This condition can go on for years without being detected, however it is likely the animal picked it up when it was a lot younger, often from its mother. Those that have done research say if a cow has Johne's and is shedding there is about a 30% chance its calf will contract it.

I need to be very clear John’s disease is out in the cattle industry but at pretty low levels. In a survey in western Canadian commercial herds by Dr. Campbell and others at Saskatoon 1.6% of cattle tested positive and 5.4 % of the herds had at least two cases. My hope is that this level is even lower in purebred herds but we don’t know that for sure.

If you do get a positive test the beauty is in the purebred industry you know all of the calves that a given cow has had and where they are so they could be tested if two years or older. If a positive animal was purchased the original breeder could do the same to trace it back. Sometimes nothing is found and in recent research wildlife

can be incriminated as deer and elk also can get this disease. Veterinarians are looking for co-morbidities. This means other maybe subclinical diseases that stress the cow and make them more susceptible to getting and breaking with Johne’s disease. Johne’s is contagious but it takes exposure over a period of time and generally exposure at a very young age to contract it. In most cases it has been contracted as a calf in the first six months of its life. If the clinical case was not purchased, the next potential group to check in a herd is the same age cohorts as the clinical case that were born and housed or pastured together as calves.

Calves and bred heifers are too young to test as they would always show up negative so concentrate on primarily the age group where one is clinical. Really valuable animals such as flush cows can be isolated to keep from contaminating others until too much weight loss has occurred and then shipped for slaughter as long as not too thin. The meat is safe for consumption and condemnation only comes with severe emaciation.

The biggest advice I can give as I say is not to panic. Instead, develop a strategy to test selectively and remove, ship or isolate positives. A pooled PCR can be done where five animals are combined and if negative, they all are negative. If positive they go back and individually test to find out the specific positives. This technique can save lots of dollars in the testing process and find any subclinical carriers. Work closely with your veterinarian to develop a strategy that works for your herd.

The disease is really slow to show itself, therefore can sometimes can be slower to get rid of. If exposure is highly suspicious in certain animals it may take testing over several years to make sure they are clean. Most veterinarians, myself included, have dealt with cases in clinical practice. Not panicking, keeping client confidentiality in mind, not pointing fingers, and systematically developing a plan to eliminate it over time works well. In many cases if some weight loss is occurring, reproduction is often the first thing to go so open cows that are shipped could be the first way you unknowingly cull them from the herd. That is a good thing and I have always thought if wanting to do surveillance on a herd I would focus on testing open cows before they are shipped.

It never hurts to review manure management and this helps with other diseases such as calf scours and its transmission. Having a clean calving area and keeping cohorts together say in 50 cow/calf pairs at calving, using a different bucket for feeding and manure management are great strategies. Cleaning the bucket before feeding if you have just used it for manure loading is another strategy to prevent spread. Good bedding principles help with every form of calf health. This disease has been around for a long

time and many years ago was often mistakenly diagnosed as hardware disease. Most purebred breeders are very diligent about most of the things mentioned so most Johne’s comes in with purchased stock.

If you do embryo transplanting, I have come across cases where the recipient cows have brought in Johne's. If purchasing recipients, it would be wise to test them for Johne’s and some transplant centers have initiated the practice and I think that is a very wise practice.

Acting on a clinical case, recognizing it early and following testing and culling will go a long way to keeping incidence very low in the beef industry and be able to hopefully totally eliminate it over time. It is why it is a notifiable disease in most provinces and together we can hope to keep it out of most purebred herds or eliminate it when it is detected. That is the goal and maintaining the purebred herds’ reputation for quality genetics and high health. The future could potentially have a vaccine possibly be developed or even better detection methods than we have today which will also greatly help you producers down the line.

Scrotal circumference is a trait which is moderately to highly heritable. Research indicates that testicle size is an excellent indicator of age at puberty of a sire's daughters and is also related to seminal quality and quantity.
