owdy ho! What a time to be in the best agriculture sector there is, the beef industry. Incredible prices are ringing throughout this country and it's about time we get rewarded, as producers, for being resilient and for having the perseverance to reap the benefits of our hard work! It's about darn time! Saying that I would strongly encourage members and customers to share your results from this fall with our staff or directors. Always satisfying to see the premium we get for our pink tagged calves come fall run and the continued success for those that support the breed! A friendly reminder to let your bull customers know about ordering the Limousin tags online. I would also like to announce the 2024 CJLA Impact show "Kicking it in the Kawarthas" will be held at Lindsay, Ont., August 15-18. The show committee has been working very diligently to have this show developed for next year and I thank those that jumped in with both feet to make it happen for our juniors! Sticking with the juniors, I personally want to congratulate the Pinnacle View Limousin crew! They hosted over 70 junior members at their Open House on September 9 and it was a knock out of the park event. Congratulations to all that were involved in organizing this clinic that was represented by all breeds and juniors that travelled long distances to participate. The Canadian Limousin Association is excited to announce the "Limousin Forward" genetic
advancement project. We are proud to partner with Neogen Canada to offer GGP-100K tests at a $10 discount. Animals under 24 months will be eligible for this discount. Good luck to all those attending fall shows this year. The Limousin breed will be represented well at Lloydminster Stockade, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Farmfair International and this year’s National Show and Sale being held at Canadian Western Agribition! Congratulations to those that have participated in recent shows at Olds Fall Classic and Expo Boeuf. Great to see the continued success for those members! It's that time of year again where we see our members dedication to consignment and production sales. Wishing you all great success in the coming weeks and hope to see those who attend soon. I love this time of year when the endless hours of preparation and hard work get rewarded! In closing, I would like to reiterate what my late brother, Bradley, told me, "Hard work pays off in the end." Thank you all to those that support our breed and the beef industry. Thank you to all that poured their heart, sweat and tears into this life that we are so fortunate to live! Keep your stick on the ice.

llo! C’est un bon temps pour être dans la meilleur production en agriculture, l’industrie de bœuf. On voit des prix incroyables à travers le pays, et finalement on se fait compenser, comme producteurs, pour notre résilience et travail fort! C’était le temps! Après avoir dit ça, j’encourage les membres et leurs clients de partager vos résultats avec notre staff et les membres du conseil. Toujours satisfaisant de voir les primes qu’on reçoit pour nos veaux avec les tags roses en automne et le succès pour ceux qui continue d’encourager la race! Un petit rappel d’informer vos clients de taureaux qu’ils peuvent commander les tags Limousin en ligne. J’aimerais aussi announcer que le CJLA Impact show 2024 "Kicking it in the Kawarthas" sera tenue à Lindsay, Ont., le 15-18 août. Le comité de show a travaillé très fort pour développer ce show pour l’an prochain et je remercie ceux qui ont embarqué à 100% pour le réussir pour nos juniors!
On est fier d’être partenaire avec Neogen Canada pour offrir les tests GGP-100K a un rabais de 10$. Les animaux en bas de 24 mois seront admissible à ce rabais. T
his fall I was fortunate to have attended Pinnacle View’s Open House and Junior event. I would like to give special recognition to the Swaan and Kishkan families for putting on a professional, well-organized event that attracted 70 juniors from BC and Alberta. Limousin cattle may be the center of what we do but it’s the skillset and the friendships that are formed along the way that make the breed special. Thank you for the work you are doing to develop the next generation of breeders and show competitors. We have partnered again with Neogen Canada to offer another genomics project to help offset the cost of DNA. The Limousin Forward Project is now open to bulls and females 24 months of age and younger to complete a 100K test for $35. This testing is offered on a first come, first serve basis. Qualifying animals that completed 100K testing between August 4th and now will receive a $10 credit on the member’s CLA account. We recognized that a number of show and sale animals had DNA completed during this time and would like to recognize those animals under the project. Members far exceeded the original number of head goals during the last Limousin Legacy Project. For many completing DNA has become a normal operating process and we hope to see the same positive results from the Limousin Forward Project. The CLA Board of Directors continue to meet the last Tuesday of each month. This regular meeting time is proving to be successful in moving projects along and responding to member requests. The board is currently looking to the general membership to fill seats on the Ad-Hoc committees. There are positions open on the following committees: Breed Improvement, Registry, Commercial and Promotions Committees. Please reach out to a board member or myself if you are interested or have questions about the roles of committee members. With the current economic times the board has voted to hold their winter meeting online this year rather than incurring travel costs to meet in person. A group of board members will be taking part in the Canadian Beef Breeds Council Annual General Meeting at Agribition. It has been over a decade since prices were increased in the registry and unfortunately in 2024 there will be a new fee schedule released. Members will see an increase to Whole Herd Enrollment (WHE) from $25 to $30 a head. We will also be moving to a once-a-year payment of WHE fees that will be due annually in February. Members will have the option to apply for a payment plan where fees will be divided equally between payments in February and September. There will also be increases to members who use the nonWHE registration options. The 2024 fee schedule will be sent out to members by email, mail and will be available online. After such great weather this fall it’s hard to accept that winter is now here. Thoughts turn to the end of year and prioritizing for the Association needs for 2024. We are happy to be offering Limousin branded merchandise for all your Christmas shopping needs this year. From hats to leather items to clothing there is something there for everyone on your Limousin gift buying list. Please visit the website for more information. Le conseil regarde actuellement vers les membres pour siéger sur nos comités. Après le beau temps de cet automne c’est difficile d’accepter que l’hiver soit ici. On commence à penser vers la fin de l’année et les priorités de l’Association pour 2024. On est content d’offrir de la merchandise Limousin pour vos cadeaux de Noel cette année. On a des casquettes et des vêtements pour tout le monde. Svp visitez le site web pour plus d’infos. J’ai hâte de rencontrer les membres aux évènements en fin de l’année et comme toujours, vos appels et courriels pour discuter la race Limousin sont apprécier.

On est encore partenaire avec Neogen Canada pour offrir un autre projet de génomiques pour aider à défrayer le coût de ADN. Le projet Limousin Forward est maintenant ouvert aux taureaux et femelles en bas de 24 mois pour compléter un test 100K pour 35$. Ce test est offert sur une base de premier arrivé, premier servi. Les animaux qui se qualifie entre le 4 août et maintenant recevrons un crédit de 10$ sur le compte de l’éleveur. On a réalisé que plusieurs animaux de show et ventes on eut de l’ADN complété durant cet période et on aimerait reconnaitre ces animaux sous le projet. Les membres ont dépassé notre objectif durant la dernière projet Limousin Legacy. Pour plusieurs, compléter de l’ADN est devenu un processus normal et on espère voir les mêmes résultats positifs du projet Limousin Forward.

The new CJLA board had their first meeting on October 16, 2023 where the new board elected their executive. Meet the 2023/24 CJLA Board of Directors: 1. JOCELYN KENNEDY – PRESIDENT
Hi everyone! I’m Jocelyn Kennedy and I am the 2023/24 CJLA President. I am from Omemee, Ont. where my family and I own and operate Crown Hill Acres. I’m 18 years old, and I go to school at the University of Guelph where I am getting my Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Food and Agricultural Business. This is my 5th year on the board, and I’m super excited for this upcoming year. I am also on the Ontario Junior Limousin Association, where I currently also serve as President. I have been heavily involved in the Limousin breed, showing for the past 9 years, and serving on the National and Provincial boards since 2019. I’m super excited to serve as president for this upcoming year and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at events throughout the year! Favourite Movie: Cars

Hello, I’m Carly Arnold! I am from Nova Scotia, I’m 15 years old and in grade 10. This is my first year on the board and my position on the board this year is Treasurer. At my family-owned farm we mainly run purebred Limousin and commercial cattle. I live on J&K Farm which is on the side of the North Mountain in the valley of Nova Scotia. I am also sitting on the board of the Junior Limousin Association for the Maritimes. Getting more people engaged and raising awareness of the breed is my biggest goal for this year! Hi everyone! I’m Taylor Annett, I’m 18 and this is my third year on the board. This year I took on the role of being a director at large. I’m from the small town of Mildmay, Ont. where my family and I own and operate Preferred Limousin. I’m currently attending University of Guelph for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. Along with being part of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association, I am also the Vice President for the Ontario Junior Limousin Association. I’m super excited to see what this year holds and can’t wait to get the juniors involved! Favourite Movie: Foot Loose

MAKING SENSE OF MYOSTATIN LIMOUSIN VOICE / WINTER 2023
M
yostatin is a growth regulator secreted by muscle cells that inhibits muscle growth. ‘Myo’ refers to muscle and a ‘statin’ is a regulator. Myostatin is also known as Growth Differential Factor 8, abbreviated at GDF8. Myostatin acts on muscle cells in two ways. It inhibits protein synthesis and stimulates protein degradation. In normal animals these actions result in a regulated protein turnover in the muscle cell. The gene encoding myostatin was discovered in 1997 by scientists working in development of knockout strains of mice. These scientists produced a strain of mice that didn’t produce any functional myostatin resulting in development of nearly twice as much muscle as normal. Variations in myostatin have been identified in a number of breeds in cattle, sheep, dogs and in humans. WHAT IS THE F94L MUTATION?
There are a number of mutations or polymorphisms in the myostatin gene that is made of up of three exons or coding sequences on bovine chromosome 2, which is one of the nonsex determining chromosomes. 10 of the identified mutations are silent and result in no change in the amino acid sequence. Three polymorphisms are missense but result in a functional gene product and six are disruptive causing complete or nearly complete
loss of function. The most extreme ‘double muscled’ phenotypes are caused by disruptive loss or inactivation of the gene product. Examples include the myostatin mutations in Piedmontese, Blonde d’Aquitaine, and Belgian Blue. The mutation in Belgian Blue cattle is an inactivation due to an 11 base pair deletion in the gene and muscle growth unregulated by this pathway. The inactivation mutations are associated with substantial levels of muscular hypertrophy or the size of muscle fibers. The F94L mutation is a missense mutation causing partial inactivation of myostatin. The F94L is most prevalent in Limousin cattle and seen infrequently in Simmental and several other breeds of European origin or composites thereof. Allele frequency varies somewhat among Limousin populations around the world but some are as high as 94%. The F94L mutation is caused by a single nucleotide substitution at nucleotide 415 in the DNA of exon 1. At this position a C (cytosine) to A (adenine) transversion occurs. The transversion results in a codon change in the amino acid coding sequence causing a substitution of Leucine amino acid for a Phenylalanine at the 94th amino acid of the protein, hence the identification as F94L. The F94L missense mutation has been shown to affect muscle size through hyperplasia, or the number of muscle fibers created during embryonic development.
animals carrying zero copies of F94L for intramuscular fat related traits. The heterozygote had marbling scores that were 40 degrees lower than their wild type homozygote counterparts. Incorporation of sires homozygous for F94L into beef x dairy breeding systems such that each resulting terminal animal has a single copy of F94L could substantially improve retain yield and carcass attributes. Selection of sires with favourable EPD for marbling could potentially offset declines in quality attributes in the selection system. Earlier research conducted at the United States Department of Agriculture’s US Meat Animal Research Center reported similar finding when investigating the effects of F94L on the phenotypic performance of animals. The reported differences for additive effect of a single copy of F94L was a decrease of 25 degrees of marbling, an increase of more than one square inch of ribeye area, a 0.08 inch decrease in rib fat thickness, a 0.57 decrease in yield grade and 1.7 kg decrease in slice shear force (i.e. an improvement in tenderness). These researchers also found no difference in birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, final live weight or carcass weight.
The effects of F94L are well described in the beef genetics research literature and have been investigated nearly continuously since myostatin was first identified in 1997. The F94L allele has been a research target for improving beef production efficiency due to its milder effects on beef cattle than the forms that completely inactivate myostatin. The complete inactivation mutations are frequently associated with significant levels of dystocia making them less attractive to commercial producers regardless of the carcass trait benefits. F94L is remarkably different in its impact on cattle phenotypes making it a more desirable allele for increasing red meat yield in cattle. F94L partial inactivation of myostatin primarily impacts muscle shape, muscle mass, retail yield and tenderness attributes of beef carcasses. Recent work investigating the suitability of F94L in beef by dairy breeding programs has reaffirmed many of the effects of the allele in beef production. Animals heterozygous (carrying one wild type allele and one copy of the F94L allele) had no difference in birthweight, gestation length, assisted births, average daily gain throughout life, carcass weight, meat tenderness or dressing percentage. However, animals carrying one copy of the F94L allele did have ribeye areas that were more than 1 square inch larger, >0.4 units more desirable yield grade, 15% more Yield Grade 1 & 2 carcasses, and more desirable (rounder or less angular) ribeye shape. Heterozygotes were less desirable than
CONCLUSION
The F94L myostatin variant provides a genetic basis to easily improve red meat yield and possibly tenderness in beef cattle carcasses. The partial inactivation of myostatin caused by the F94L variant results in no significant changes in dystocia, body weights or gain. F94L significantly improves ribeye muscle area. Given no change in carcass weight, the larger ribeye area improves yield grade scores and retail beef yield. Decreases in marbling score are statistically significant and large enough numerically to reduce the number of cattle grading in Choice or higher USDA quality grade designations. If breeders choose to pursue homozygous genotypes for F94L for use in commercial beef settings, care should be taken to also select for advanced marbling genetic potential, via Marbling EPD, to offset these economic decreases due to lower quality grades in the resulting slaughter cattle progeny.

EFFECTS OF F94L MYOSTATIN ALLELE
Australian and New Zealand studies affirm the demonstrated differences observed in North American cattle populations. Detailed research in Australia to elucidate the affect of F94L on tenderness of the semitendinosus (part of bottom round) muscle. These researchers confirm the increase in muscle mass of animals with F94L are due to hyperplasia (increase in count of myofibrils). It was also demonstrated that F94L carriers had increased meat tenderness through both peak force and compression methods. Additionally, carriers of F94L had decreased collagen/elastin content. Increased collagen content has been demonstrated to decrease meat tenderness due to cross linking of myofibrils. The researchers concluded that the improvement in tenderness was due to this change in the extracellular matrix (collagen effects) and not due to myofiber diameter.

ailing from picturesque Quesnel, British Columbia, 14-year-old Austyn Kishkan, and 12-year-old Andie Kishkan are following in their mom, past CLA President, Erin Kishkan’s, footsteps as keen cattlewomen and CJLA members.
Their family operation, Pinnacle View Limousin, is comprised of 600 acres where they run 100 purebred Limousin and Charolais mother cows. They grow two to three hay crops a year under irrigation as well as growing corn silage, oats and barley. Their grandparents Rob and Cheryl Swaan and their parents Eric and Erin Kishkan are the family hosts an annual bull sale every April with Limousin and Charolais yearling and two year old bulls offered as well as an open house in the fall bi-annually. Limousin is the breed of choice for Austyn and Andie, who have shown home-raised Limousin animals with tremendous success through 4-H. They also travel to many major shows throughout BC and across western Canada, where Pinnacle View Limousin does an excellent job of showcasing their genetics and the Limousin breed. “They look nice and have good meat,” Austyn boasts of the Limousin breed, “They are also good tempered.”

20 Andie says of the breed, “They have good carcass grading and they are awesome. They are such a powerhouse breed.” The sisters feel Limousin females are superior because of their strong build with the ability to maintain a feminine look. Limousin bulls have good muscling, good testicles, and maintain masculinity while still having style. Austyn and Andie have attended many of the CJLA Impact Shows including Nova Scotia and Ontario most recently. They like to help the younger members while at the shows and attend the meetings to stay up to date. Their favourite memories come from the ice breaker games at the Impact Shows. “They were fun and funny at the same time.”

Austyn’s favourite memory is winning the first ever Neogen 100K Jackpot Show this summer, and then having to clarify to all of her friends that sadly she did not win $100,000! Aside from the memories made, Austyn and Andie also appreciate the scholarship opportunities, leadership, mentorship and team building skills that they have gained from the CJLA program. Above all, meeting new people and then getting to see them again at each junior show and cattle event, is something Austyn and Andie greatly look forward to. Among their greatest accomplishments Austyn affirms the Neogen 100K Jackpot win was a definite highlight of her show career. As was winning the 2nd Year Stars of the Future Jackpot with her heifer at IPE this year. Andie’s highlight was winning Grand Champion Heifer at the Peace Country Junior Invitational and winning
They credit their mom, Erin, and their Papa, Rob, as being their biggest mentors and supporters. They have also been mentored by some of the girls – Maddi, Hanna and Kennedy – who have worked for their family. Their advice for younger cattlemen and women, “Don’t give up just because you had a bad show. It gets better as you grow more confidence and build your skills.” Austyn loves her cattle the most, but outside of cattle she also enjoys camping in the summer and skiing in the winter. She would like a career in the agriculture industry – perhaps a veterinarian. One of her future goals is to one day win the Supreme at Canadian
Western Agribition. Andie’s two main passions are cattle and competitive gymnastics. She also loves swimming and snowboarding. She aspires to be a teacher like many of her family members and hopes to go to the University of Victoria for her schooling. Until then, they both plan on continuing to show cattle, help on the farm, and stay involved in the CJLA. They both hope to someday join the CJLA board of directors. “We hope that one day Limousin will be as big a breed as Angus. We hope that there will be more Limousin at the shows so we don’t have to be in the AOB divisions. The breeders and CLA can help by advertising more and recruiting more members,” the sisters say, “The CJLA is awesome and more members should be involved and learn more about the Limousin breed.”

What prompted you to start registering Limousin cattle? It’s always been a dream to raise bulls and there are no more beautiful cattle in the world than Limousin cattle.
What motivates you in your operation going forward? Our cows are throwing some very nice daughters off our recently purchased walking bulls showing we are making the right steps to building up a good herd.
Where would you love to go to tour Limousin cattle? La Rhone Limousins in Tulbagh, Western Cape, South Africa – they have some of the best true meat wagon Limousin cattle in the world.
What direction are you wanting to take your herd? We have always loved the more traditional style of Limousin. However, we do admire the growth in depth and docility in the new style of Limousin. For our herd, we would like to continue the more traditional style of Limousin with the added depth and docility from the modern Limousin and help put the breed back on top of the cattle industry.
When the work is done, what does your family enjoy for fun? We have always been big into sports. From

hockey and slow pitch to hunting and rodeo. Most of all our family just values being together for quality time, even after spending the whole day working together.

The Butler family chose Limousin for their retail store southwest of London, Ontario
T
ucked southwest of London, above Lake Erie in Chatham-Kent, is Croton, Ont. It is here that the third-generation Bulter family farm, Riverside Hill Farms Inc., operates under the careful management of Josh and Emma Butler, who are also the “J” and “E” of J&E Meats. Josh’s grandfather, Robert Butler, purchased the farm in 1938 and moved to the property in 1939 with his wife, Blanche, to raise their five children. Their youngest son, Harold, chose to stay on the family farm to raise his own family. He and his wife, Linda, had four children – Josh being the middle child. Josh always had a keen interest in the farm from an early age. He attended the University of Guelph (Ridgetown) in the agriculture program before returning to the farm full time following graduation.

Emma was raised on a beef farm in nearby Oil Springs, Ont. and in 2015, while working at the local John Deere dealership, she crossed paths with Josh. They were married on the farm in 2016 and have 4 children, all 5 years of age and under. Back in the 1940’s, Josh’s grandfather had milking cows. In the 1990’s the farm was a broiler-breeder chicken operation and in the 2000’s the farm diversified to add pigs, while also increasing crop production and switching to beef production in the late 2000’s. After losing Josh’s brother, Greg, to a tragic farm accident in 2002, the farm saw the diversification of sheep, increase in cattle production, and subsequently, after Josh and Emma were married, another layer of diversification came with a farm store, which has now grown into a new larger facility and custom butcher shop and the addition of chicken production through the Chicken Farmers of Ontario Artesian Chicken Program. Today, their operation currently produces beef, lamb and chicken which are cut and

packaged on site in their state-of-the-art butcher shop and then retail direct to consumer through their farm store. They also grow over 1,000 acres of crops including wheat, corn, soybeans, hay and cover crops. Over the years, the Butler family has continually expanded and diversified their operation. “Now that we have children of our own, and are raising the fourth generation of Butler’s here on the farm, we want to create a legacy here for them and a vast offering of opportunities should our children choose to return to, or stay, here on the farm,” says Emma, “We want to be able to provide them with options to sustain them in their goals and dreams, and perhaps one day they too can raise their families here on the farm, if they wish to do so. We are continuously improving our practices, growing and ever evolving while striving to maintain efficiency and quality. In terms of our cattle operation, we owe everything we have to the cows. Our health, our wealth, our home, our happiness is all because of them and their gifts to us - and we don’t take that for granted! Through our whole-animal butchery practices, to our herd health management; everything here on our farm is deeply connected.” The Butler’s looked to Limousin to address a problem they had with their previous breeding program – their cattle were significantly lacking muscle which resulted in lower carcass yields. That was leaving money – and waste – on the table. “One of the main reasons we chose to diversify our herd with a Limousin influence was to produce better, higher quality stock through higher yielding animals while maintaining good average daily gains and feed conversions,” Josh comments, “Limousin cattle work for us because

42 they generate yield without sacrificing cutability and are top quality producers. They make exceptional mothers through their well-structured udders and a strong maternal instinct.” Their herd previously consisted of crossbred cows of Charolais, Hereford and Angus influence, however, the herd is now driving towards primarily Limousin influence for their maternal base. Their replacement heifers have predominantly Limousin genetics. They plan to continue to cross breed but maintain a dominant Limousin influence to compliment the crossbred vigour. Their herd currently calves twice per year, in two separate groups. They have built their foundation herd on quiet, easy calving maternal cows which greatly reduces labour and intervention at calving time. When seeking herd sires Josh says he looks for length, and overall body frame, along with a large belly size behind the ribs into the round and a well-muscled, square hip.

“I typically look for sires with a strong, square framed front leg that carry their legs underneath the body, evenly distributing their weight. I find when the front legs are out too wide, the bulls have decreased working life expectancy throughout the breeding season as we breed cows naturally. Most importantly, now that we market primarily direct to consumer, we evaluate the loin scans to determine top quality stock for our retail store.” The story of their retail meat business began just four years ago – Josh and Emma were serving customers out of their garage. They created “J&E Meats” as a Facebook page and decided they wanted to sell meat directly to consumers. A few months later, in 2019, they opened a small retail store on their farm. The pandemic hit, and their business experienced a huge uptick in sales. Customers wanted to know more about their food, and where it came from. Their customer demographic grew exponentially during the pandemic and they continued to retail from their small farm store and online. “In 2022, we picked a spot in our corn field and decided it was time to just go for it,” Emma recalls of building their new, state-of-the-art customer butcher shop – complete with dry aging cooler – and much larger retail store. Their team expanded from just the two of them to now having two full time butchers, a full time Inventory Manager, a full time General Manager and two part time associates.
“We have a fantastic, supportive, wonderful team that helps support our dream of feeding our community,” Emma says, “We do everything completely from start to finish here on the farm; grow and raise all the animals, plus grow all the feed for them, and make their feed rations on site, to dry aging, cutting, packaging and retailing our products.” J&E Meats market 100% of their lamb and chicken direct to consumers through their farm store, and approximately 90% of their beef. The ultimate goal is marketing 100% of their beef through their store – a goal that may be achieved by the end of 2023. “Marketing our products is relatively easy, we have focused mainly on maintaining our customer relationships and find our customers choose to return to us time and time again to purchase our products,” Emma says that their customers respect the level of transparency they have with them, “We show and tell them how their food is raised, where it comes from, what it eats and who raises it. The high quality products we are able to consistently produce keeps them returning, and our loyal dedication to serving them and our community, we believe, will encourage them to return for years to come.” In addition to their meat products, they have also created an all-natural skincare line made from beef tallow, apply named “Camden Tallow” after the township that they hail from. This gentle, ultra moisturizing product is suitable for all skin types.
“It was a product that we initially wanted to try for all the health benefits of having good, clean skincare, reducing waste and using as
many parts of our animals as we can, but also a product that we could use as a catalyst for our meat sales and farm store as a conversation starter with new and potential customers,” Emma says, “The brand is growing, and doing exactly what we targeted it for.” The Camden Tallow product line is also available for purchase on their website, and can be shipped across Canada.

In addition to their farm and business, Emma also launched her own podcast in June of 2023. On “The Meat Mistress Podcast” Emma discusses mom-life, farm-life, entrepreneurship and all things small business. She recently launched a small business series to help other small business owners, in agriculture or not, navigate some of the challenges and topics around owning a small business,

“Camden Tallow is what I like to call a ‘value added easter egg’ product,” Emma explains, “It is a shippable product that not only works but leads customers back to us here at J&E Meats. The way the ‘easter egg’ works is that we can push marketing and branding of our products towards different consumer demographics, with the hopes that it will bring more customers either into the brickand-mortar farm store or via our online store.” Camden Tallow has allowed the Butler’s to reach new target markets and is a non-perishable product that they can take to shows and farmers markets to offer for sale without having to bring frozen meat with them.
“I am more than happy to share all the ways I have failed and all the things I have learned so far in hopes it can help even just one person on their journey,” Emma says, “It is absolutely incredibly humbling that I have so many supporters and people tuning in.” You can find the Meat Mistress Podcast on Spotify. Looking towards the future, Josh and Emma hope to continue to grow and diversify their unique farm to table store. Working towards greener and more sustainable packaging in the future, and also expanding on agritourism to allow guests to come and see the farm and perhaps even stay and immerse themselves in farm life while they are there are all ideas on the table.

The Butler’s dry-lot all of their cattle – meaning they stay inside most of the time. “In our geographic area, pasture is scarce because the land is far better suited for growing crops. We offset the dry lotting by grazing double crop forages after wheat, in addition to grazing corn stalks after harvest as well as spring grazing rye, planted after tobacco,” Josh comments. Within their cow herd, they are working towards breeding for proper udder structure and solid foot structure. Josh says their ultimate long-term goal is a closed cow herd, and only purchasing sires. “We find success in channeling focus on one to two goals and achieving them before moving onto the next,” Josh comments, “We have already achieved our goal of well-tempered cows, and have set our sights on improving udders and feet. Over time we hope to continually improve our herd health and maintenance via the Limousin difference.”
The Butler’s were sold on the Limousin breed by the Zwambag family of Bee Zee Acres, Glencoe, Ont. “I swore I would never buy a Limousin bull until meeting and getting to know Bill and Matt and the Zwambag family,” Josh says, “It is because of their passion for the industry, meticulous genetic selection and their understanding of the needs of the producer to improve their herd, that we have seen ultimate success in our own operation. Now we are primarily Limousin influenced and I rarely purchase any other herd sire!”

Josh and Emma have seen first-hand the incredible difference Limousin has made from birth to feedlot and onto the cutting table within their meat business. Higher yields and reduced trim and waste has made for more profitability. They are averaging 61% yield per carcass and are consistently grading AAA-Prime. “Time and time again you’ll hear myself and my butchers saying, ‘check out this marbling’ or ‘look at the size of this rib section’,” Emma comments, “The carcasses are large, but we built our facility knowing that fact and set our receiving warehouse and rail system up in a way our staff could safely and effortlessly handle a large carcass. It truly makes the difference in our overall sales and profit margins, and to our customers as well. Our customers are always giving us compliments on the flavour and texture of the beef products, and are noticing the consistency. AFRICAN WILDLIFE & LIMOUSIN CATTLE
Fast forward to 2023, after Covid restrictions and other obstacles preventing an earlier visit, an opportunity presented itself to
join a small group on a safari in Tanzania, initiated by Allan Browarny, world renown livestock photographer. So, we thought, why not join Allan’s group for the safari and extend our stay to include a cattle tour in South Africa while being on that side of the planet. The combination made for a threeweek long trip of a lifetime! The safari took us game watching in three national parks in Tanzania: Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Tarangire. Along the daily drives, we saw lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and African buffalos known as the African Big Five. The term “Big Five” originally referred to the difficulty in hunting these large African mammal species, known to be dangerous and it was considered a feat by trophy hunters to bring

frica, more specifically South Africa, has been intriguing to us ever since we met John and Tracey Devonport (Devlan Limousins) at ILC 2016 in Ireland. Our brief encounter led to following them on social media, as well as La Rhone Limousins, another well-established breeder making tracks in South Africa. Later in 2019, we met Derick Le Roux (Xourel Limousins) who came to Farmfair where he received a Champion of the World Award for his bull Xourel Rainmaker. Through the magic of Facebook, we kept a close eye on these three Limousin establishments and found their programs fascinating.
them home. Hunting is now restricted to some species in Tanzania. Over the 12-days of our photography safari we also saw countless zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, giraffes, hippopotamus, baboons and so many bird species! It was fascinating to watch these animals in their natural habitat, just doing their daily thing.

Our time in Tanzania also included some cultural awareness visits. We particularly enjoyed learning about Maasai tribes, the nomadic ethnic people in East Africa. The Maasai have plenty of unique characteristics about their culture including their dress, diet and way of life. The children of the village were very proud to recite the alphabet and sing us songs in English.
After Tanzania, we went on to South Africa where we were hosted by the three Limousin breeders mentioned above. The first stop was Devlan Limousins located about an hour and a half outside of Johannesburg. The manicured property spreads over 1200 hectares where 600 purebred Limousin animals receive top notch management. Among them - Devlan Amazing Grace, a young female with a bright future and Devlan Knight DL1909,

A visit with Derick and Anischa Le Roux of Xourel Limousins was next on our agenda. This family operation runs very efficiently and demonstrated how Limousin cattle thrive under harsh conditions. It was very dry in Coligny, located in the north/ central part of the country at the time of our visit. Anticipation is building up for their first production sale scheduled to take place on February 24, 2024. The Le Roux Family will offer an elite group of bulls and females, featuring some Canadian genetics!

The portion of the trip in Tanzania was organized by Lawrence Rowley of Leader Tours, based out of Calgary. Lawrence was one of the nine people in our group and worked closely with our guides of Game Life Legends. They coordinated every aspect of our stay. Lawrence is organizing another Tanzanian safari vacation for next year.

52 We wrapped up our Limousin journey at La Rhone Limousins, just outside of Cape Town. What a picturesque sight that is! While the Limousin division comprises of over 200 breeding females, the main business for the du Toit family is fruit production including peaches, nectarines, and plums. AJ took time to show us the property and led some very engaging discussions about genetics and the Limousin breed despite being a very busy time at the farm. His parents Andre and Trudene started the herd and to this day remain mentors to AJ with the breeding decisions. They all share an extreme commitment to excellence for their cattle operation, tirelessly seeking genetics that will keep them at the top. Their record breaking bi-annual sale is a testament of their efforts. The 2023 edition featured the sale of La Rhone Acapulco for 3 million rands (approximately $216,000) and the top selling female brought 1.4M rands ($100,000). We were overwhelmed with the hospitality and the generosity of our friends. Each one proudly shared their passion for the Limousin breed with us. We cannot thank them enough for their time and the memories made. We strongly encourage everyone to follow them on social media or look up their websites to fully appreciate the quality of their herds.

irst off, the NALF board, membership and staff would like to wish all of our friends at CLA a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as we head into 2024. NALF appreciates a great working relationship with our friends and fellow Limousin cattle producers in Canada and we are looking forward to a profitable 2024 for all.

Strong commercial cattle markets continue given continual herd reductions and the U.S. cattle numbers still show very few signs of heifer retention for herd rebuilding at this point which continues to indicate cattle markets will remain strong into 2024. Given higher inflation rates, herd rebuilding will be dependent on moisture conditions next spring. If herd rebuilding begins and cow slaughter declines, look for lower beef production levels which will lead to higher price levels moving forward.

The ability to market your seedstock to commercial cattle producers looking to potentially rebuild their herds is an opportunity to increase your customer base moving forward. Turning in phenotype data to your association is key to improving accuracy on EPDs as you make your mating decisions this spring. Utilizing genomics as you are already aware will also help you spot high performance cattle earlier versus waiting on progeny for an early peak into a herd sire’s potential. The NALF board continues to work towards improving our data and herdbook as technology continues to advance at a rapid pace. Industry leading carcass trait phenotypes over the past few years has tremendously helped our accuracy on all carcass trait EPDs. That same approach will also be applied to weight trait data phenotype capture much like we recently did on the gestation length EPD during the summer of 2023.
Five new EPDS will be released soon at NALF along with updated terminal and maternal indexes once the DMI EPD is completed by IGS. We realize that this does not totally replace being a great cattleman or cattlewoman. Cattle still have to be evaluated visually for structure and phenotype but the combination of utilizing both solid data and visual appraisal accelerates genetic improvement. The Limousin breed is still the leader in REA according to USMARC and muscle is still what the cattle are noted for throughout both countries. The ability to supply the commercial cowman seedstock that provide a balanced EPD trait deck remains critical though as cattle move from commercial cow operations into the feedyard, packing house and eventually the consuming public. NALF intends to use all the tools available to us to accomplish moving into the future where the competition is fierce for marketing seedstock genetics. At the time of this writing, we are getting ready to ship our research cattle out of our Montana ranch cooperators to South Dakota State University for independent third-party research on feeding performance and carcass data. This has been a long-term fouryear project by our board in planning, breeding, calving and finally shipping the cattle on to SDSU for evaluation. Needless to say, this is long overdue and we will plan on sharing our data and results with CLA as we move forward. Have a great 2024 and we look forward to seeing some of you at the 2024 National Western pen show in Denver. We are expecting a great turnout for the event at the new facility and are excited for the event. We wish you all the best in 2024!

Greetings from the west. The late beautiful fall weather has been very welcome in most parts of BC. We had some late season moisture that provided some much-needed extended fall grazing after our summer drought. The Limousin happenings in BC have been quiet other than the commercial producers that are continually reaping the benefits of using Limousin bulls. Prices at the auction markets have stayed steady and strong with some strings of Limousin influenced calves bringing $0.10 - $0.30 above the average in each weight category, some as high as $0.45 over the average. This is very exciting for these producers and they are no doubt proud of their choice to use Limousin bulls! That is all I have to report from this side of the rocks. I hope you all have a great fall!

Greetings and cheers from Alberta. Fall seemed to come and pass quickly even with the great weather we have been experiencing. We are entering the fall run of calf sales at the local marts. With that, Alberta is very excited to announce that the first week of November is commercial Limousin calf week. The goal is to connect cattle buyers with any producer using Limousin genetics to advance their programs, it is exciting to help all our cow calf producers work with their local sale barns and make connections to buyers no matter the size of their operation. The prices are extremely strong in all classes of cattle and Limousin genetics are seeing some of the best premiums across all the classes. The excitement will carry forward right into the 49th Farmfair International. The number of entries has the Bonanza committee very

As Winter is in the air creeping ever so close to us there is a long list of things that we have to get done before the snow flies. Weaning is all but completed now and producers are excited about the prices we have seen in recent months for our calves. The long hard hours are finally seeing some rewards at the market for the producers. Stronger prices across the province have been reported all Fall. Producers are also very busy preparing for the Fall shows and sales in the next months. The SLA has been busy working on CWA show preparations for the National Limousin Show on November 23 at 10:00 am. Well, there was no easing into winter this year in Manitoba with an abrupt introduction the week of AgEx. After a hot dry summer resulting in drought, we have received some fall rains and now snowfall so there is hope for greener pastures in 2024. The 50th Manitoba AgEx was held the week of October 23-29, 2023 in Brandon, Man. It was the biggest show in recent history with over 600 head participating, hosting 5 national shows. The Limousin breed has not been active in the show since 2019 and thanks to the efforts of Laura Seward recruiting breeders to the show, Limousin was once again present in the barns. Diamond T Limousin, Pine Creek Limousin, Eden Meadows Farm, NYK Cattle Company, Maplehurst Limousin and Amaglen Limousin brought in an excellent group of cattle to showcase our breed. Cynthia Wirgau of Maple Grove Gelbvieh sorted the cattle in the Limousin Open Show and John Hogberg judged the Limousin Junior Show while Garrett Leibreich judged the Open Junior Showmanship. Lillian Seward was an Intermediate split winner in the All Breeds Open Showmanship. Thank you to Kyle Wright for his many years of dedication as our breed director for AgEx and his efforts to make this show a success. There are 8 Limousin bulls that weighed in on test at the Manitoba Bull Test Station at Douglas, Man. Their progress can be followed at www. manitobabulltest.com. Although there are no female sales this fall in the province, there are several breeders selling females by private treaty and in the Western Select. The Manitoba Limousin AGM will be held January 6, 2024 at the Canad Inn in Brandon, Man. at 1:00 pm. We encourage in-person participation but we will again be offering a Zoom component to the meeting. Memberships need to be paid by the end of the year to have voting privileges at this meeting. The MLA will be invoicing members who had a membership in 2023, but please reach out to a board member if you wish to purchase a membership in 2024. We are very proud of our MJLA and their efforts to reorganize the association and are looking forward to this group moving into the future! A busy fall has quickly come upon Limousin breeders in Ontario. With many shows complete, breeders turned their attention to preparing for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF). The RAWF featured Limousin cattle at the Ontario Junior Limousin Show on Wednesday, November 1, and the Open Limousin Show was held Saturday, November 4, 2023. Between working on show calves, the fall run has begun. In Ontario, we have hosted two Limousin influenced stocker sales. The first was at Carson’s on October 23 and the second was at Cargill on October 27. Final preparations are under way for our OLA Eastern Showcase Sale on December 2, 2023 in Hanover. Kira Axley has had another incredible Limousin experience in the land down under! She was only just in Australia for the Australian / Canadian Limousin Exchange a few months ago during the month of April and the connections made have led to a return trip this fall. This trip began with her flying into Adelaide, South Australia for the Royal Adelaide Show, August 31 to September 10. She worked with Aruma Limousin (Phoebe Eckermann); they showed led steers and stud cattle and had a very successful showing. Following Adelaide she flew to Perth, West Australia to meet up with James and Casey Morris of Morrisvale Limousin for a week and toured their herd. James organized for Kira to give a clipping demo with the WA College of Agriculture at Denmark, Western Australia. She clipped their steers in preparation for the steer show at the Perth Royal later in September. She then jetted back across the country to New South Wales to stay with Ian and Donna Robson of Flemington Limousin the week before the Melbourne Royal to help them prepare the show string and worked for them at the show which took place September 25 to October 1. The Flemington show string had an ‘absolutely incredible’ showing in the Limousin and Interbreed shows according to Kira. Kira entered in the Limousin Youth Paraders (showmanship) competition at the Melbourne Royal. This was open to anyone in the Limousin breed under 25 and there were three age categories - JR/ INT/ SR. Kira ultimately won the Champion Senior Parader title!
“I showed Flemington Touch of Class T69 (or Mouse as we called her) in the competition. This heifer was one of the harder heifers to convert to the show life as she was very nervous of new things, however by the end of the week when I showed her in Paraders, her and I had really bonded and she melted into my hand and was an absolute dream in the ring doing everything perfectly. She responded to the halter like an old pro, I never had to use my show stick to set her up and would never step out of her stance once she was set up which made the experience so much more special since I had worked with this heifer a lot at the farm before taking her to the show. After the judge had selected me to be the champion parader, I gave Mouse a hug and she picked her nose up to lick my face which showed the great bond I had made with this heifer, causing for a sad day when the show ended and we loaded the cattle onto the truck to go home!” Kira recalls, “Overall, this trip was absolutely incredible. I met and made friends with some of the best people, which I can't see myself living without now. Everyone that I encountered went above and beyond to make me feel at home and provide me with the best experiences possible which I am forever grateful for. I have many plans to return in the future to attend more Royal shows and reconnect with all the friends I made.”

Wow – beef calves are worth a lot of money this fall. Maximizing their performance is key as these calves transition from being cow-side with Momma to being weaned with a big sudden change in their daily environment.

GOALS DURING THIS TRANSITION PERIOD:

ɐ Need to return this newly weaned calf to a positive nutrient balance (protein, energy, minerals and vitamins) ASAP. ɐ Minimize health challenges (reduce morbidity and mortality). ɐ Optimize calf frame development and lean muscle growth during this critical period (3 to 4 weeks) after weaning and/ or arrival into a growing pen. ɐ Regain dry matter (DM) intake to >2.0% of body weight (BW) by day 14 after weaning or arrival into the growing pen. On high forage diet by day 30, calves should be eating 2.25 to 2.40% of BW as DM intake if the rumen microbial environment is working properly. ɐ Faster recovery of BW loss commonly associated with the many stressors that the newly weaned calf experiences. ɐ Maximize average daily gain and feed efficiency even while being fed a starter or receiving ration. The reality is newly weaned beef calves undergo many stressors that can compromise their health and growth. The first 3 to 4 weeks postweaning represent the most challenging time for optimizing nutrition and health management.

STRESSORS THAT MAY COME INTO PLAY UPON CALF WEANING OR ARRIVAL AT YOUR GROWING PEN INCLUDE:
ɐ The distress of weaning coupled with the stress of transportation, new social (group or pen) challenges, feed ingredient changes and marketing impacts (direct versus auction barn). ɐ Often calves are deprived of both feed and water for many hours. This can lead to a compromised rumen microbial environment with a negative impact on diet/nutrient digestion. ɐ Appetite (daily feed intake) and growth rates are negatively affected. ɐ The newly weaned calf’s health and immune system are challenged, which frequently leads to increased calf morbidity and mortality due to respiratory disease or coccidiosis breaks. KEY NUTRITIONAL AND MANAGEMENT CHECKLIST:
ɐ Provide key nutrients to recover the body weight shrink associated with weaning, transportation, and marketing stressors ɐ Assess the risk level of your calves (low, moderate, or high). Use this information to develop effective processing, vaccination, implanting and diet/nutrient strategies to maximize calf health. ɐ If direct ranch purchased, determine if the calves have been consuming the appropriate pasture mineral and/or have access to a creep feeder or have been preconditioned. This

information is extremely valuable when your nutritionist is balancing your starter ration diets. Get feed and water into these freshly weaned calves ASAP. The goal for DM intake is to be greater than 2.0% of BW by day 14. Research has demonstrated that by day 4, 100% of healthy calves have visited the feed bunk, whereas only 76% of the morbid (sick) calves have visited the feed bunk by day 4. Provide these weaned calves with feed ingredients that are highly digestible, so that the daily consumption of metabolizable protein and energy are optimal. Once the calf’s daily nutrient maintenance requirements are meet, any extra nutrients consumed can be used to drive frame development and lean muscle growth. Understand that grain starch digestion occurs at different speeds in the rumen based on grain type and processing method. Rumen starch digestion from the fastest to the slowest is oats > wheat >barley >corn > sorghum. Total tract starch digestion is lowest on dry, coarse cracked grain versus steam-rolled grain. Recent research has shown higher DM intakes and improved ADG when newly weaned calves are fed blends of
highly digestible forages and co-products like wheat shorts, soyhulls, beet pulp and corn gluten feed. ɐ Since DM intake can be lowest during the first 3 to 14 days post-weaning, feed a diet that is higher in crude protein and contains rumen available protein sources (remember to provide the rumen microbes with proper blends of energy & protein). The starter or receiving diet should be a minimum of 13.5% crude protein but calves may respond with a higher ADG when the diet contains 14.5% crude protein as long as the energy level in the diet is adequate. ɐ Add an ionophore (such as monensin sodium) to the starter or receiving diet to reduce the risk of coccidiosis break during the first 28-days after weaning. ɐ May want to add a yeast-type product into the diet. This feed additive can improve gut health and rumen microbial activity which leads to improved fiber digestion. ɐ Research has shown that using a “trainer cow” instead of “trainer steer/heifer” can show newly weaned calves where the feed bunk and water source is. Remember, the main goal post-weaning is to reduce challenges to your calves while preventing health breaks and to optimize your performance targets.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT It is often hard to quantify the value of our participation at international conferences as the results aren’t always immediate. But having Canada’s experience and leadership in sustainable beef production at the table during these talks is starting to move the needle on the perceptions about environmental impacts of beef production and how a regional approach to these policies needs to be taken.

If we don’t show up at international discussions to share our sustainability story, our ability to produce, compete and export will suffer. We do not want to see Canadian production getting lumped in with other production systems that are less efficient with very different environmental footprints. The influence of Canadian cattle producers on these international discussions is critical to our industry’s ability to operate and thrive, so it warrants the investments of time and producer dollars. Protectionist countries will be there. Countries that regulate based on politics will be there. Countering those voices needs to be done so those views aren’t alone informing international rules setting, policy guidance, and public sentiment.

Our industry’s young leaders have been on the move in recent weeks to take part in international policy conversations dealing with the challenges of producing more food for a growing world population while limiting environmental impacts. In late September, the Canadian Cattle Association’s (CCA) Mitchell Zoratti and Daniela Lombardo travelled to Rome to attend the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) first-ever Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation. Remarkably, this is the first time the FAO hosted a conference focused on livestock since it was founded in 1945. As youth delegates, Mitchell and Daniela were selected to participate in the Global Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Livestock Transformation.

This dialogue brought together participants from a variety of professional backgrounds and nationalities to discuss opportunities and solutions for empowering youth in the livestock sector. They also identified innovative and actionable solutions for sustainable livestock transformation. The three-day dialogue wrapped up with the development of a Global Youth Statement on Sustainable Livestock Development, where the positive contribution of livestock production to ecosystem services and the environment was acknowledged, while emphasizing the importance of engaging with the next generation throughout the decision-making process. We also saw our youth leadership on the world stage in discussions concerning livestock and food systems at the World Food Forum held in Rome in mid-October. Canada’s delegation included Brodie Haugan (Alberta), a graduate of the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) Program, rancher, and Alberta Beef Producers chair, Jenna Sarich from both Public and Stakeholder Engagement at CCA and the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), and CCA’s Jessica Radau. The goal of the event was to serve as a global platform to bring youth together from diverse backgrounds to discuss the key theme, Agrifood systems transformation accelerates climate action, with a large focus on engaging and supporting youth. Over the course of the forum, the delegation shared the important role the cattle industry plays in Canada’s climate change solution. During the five-day forum, Brodie and Jenna presented at an Investing in Youth in Agri-Food Systems for Accelerated Climate Action side event. The session discussed how we can invest in youth through existing and emerging programs, innovations, and technologies to help reduce barriers of entry to the next generation of farmers and ranchers who will be key to advancing climate action within our global food systems.

Brodie spoke to his experience as a participant in the Canadian CYL program and how the program invested in his growth and success in the Canadian beef industry. He also discussed the importance of recognizing the ecological goods and services provided by cattle farmers and ranchers and how the benefits extend to communities across Canada.
Both these conferences brought a tremendous opportunity for us to highlight CCA’s work in the area of youth development. We should be very proud of the caliber of our Canadian CYL program and the Canadian Cattle Youth Council. Our young leaders continue to make waves and gain recognition from the international community. Having such a strong Canadian youth voice at these meetings has resulted in meaningful discussions that have led to the acknowledgement of how Canada’s approach to raising beef is part of the climate change solution. Earlier this fall, CCA was pleased to see two Canadian young leaders in the beef industry chosen to represent the North American region on the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) Youth Advisory Group. GASL is a partnership of livestock sector stakeholders including the public and private sectors, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academia, and researchers working towards the sustainable development of the sector. Congratulations goes out to Evan Chaffe (Ontario) and Sydney Fortier (Alberta) on this prestigious appointment. This is big news as Canada fills the spots available for the North American region. Evan and Sydney will serve a two-year term and will provide valuable input on policy matters of relevance to GASL with a youth lens and based on their experience in the Canadian beef industry. It’s clear that world needs more Canadian beef, and we look forward to continuing our leadership in sustainable beef production on the world stage. Our next stop is at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai beginning in late November, where CCA has secured official observer status. With COP28 putting emphasis on food systems and agriculture, CCA will be on the ground to carry the voice of Canadian cattle producers and ensure that our industry is not misrepresented.

DOES CATTLE VACCINATION FAIL?

I have always said farmers make a lot of effort along with their veterinarian in selecting their yearly vaccination protocol. The vaccines cost money and effort is required to administer them. We must maximize the immune response to get maximum protection of our livestock ensuring protection from disease. This is good from both a biosecurity standpoint as well as an economic one. Clinical disease such as scours, pneumonia outbreaks or abortions all affect our bottom line. This article will closely outline where vaccine failures happen. Often a small effort or preplanning and adhering to a few principles can assure you get maximum benefit from your vaccination program.
heartbeat so an insulated container can save the day. Depending on how hot or cold it is even the syringe loaded with the vaccine needs to be protected. We ideally want it in the 5-15 C range before administration. Keep in mind it is going into an animal with a 38-39 C (approximately 100 F) temperature so warmer is better than cooler. If any freezing or crystallization occurs the vaccine is absolutely destroyed and must be disposed of. It is no use giving inactivated substandard vaccine when so much depends on it working properly. By storing in an insulated container this also keeps the vaccine out of sunlight which is also a good thing.
Gone are the days when farmers only administered blackleg. This was a fairly tough vaccine – efficacy was very high and level of immunity high. In short, it was hard to muck it up unless vaccine expired or was exposed to the elements, especially freezing. Nowadays, with multiple vaccines given in any weather and with some being fragile, extra care absolutely must be taken. We can all improve how we vaccinate and it improves the health of our cattle herd in the long run.
If more than one person is vaccinating split the shots over both sides of the neck. Give subcutaneously wherever possible preferably in the neck. It is absolutely imperative the automatic guns don’t get mixed up half-way through processing. With the majority of vaccines now a 2cc, dosage guns are often refilled at the same time and mix-ups can easily occur. As an example, if you were giving a blackleg vaccine (they often have formalin in the bacterin) and then refilled it with a 5-way modified live vaccine even a very small amount of blackleg vaccine left would inactivate the entire syringe of viral vaccine and the entire 25 doses would be useless. To avoid this, I closely note the colour of the vaccine plus I mark the syringe with the vaccine name to absolutely avoid a mistake.
With multiple shots now given it is best to first establish which diseases you are most concerned about and then establish which vaccines give you this combination with the least amount of shots. Multiple shots do increase the chances of mistakes happening. If multiple vaccines are given, I adhere to several principles which minimize chances of muck ups. First off, depending on the weather, have a cooler or Styrofoam box which prevents overheating in summer and more importantly freezing in winter. There are some really slick commercial ones available. You can place ice packs in for the summer and warm water bottles in the winter. You know the saying about the weather changing so quickly, so be prepared. Warm sunny days can turn into blustery winter days in a

In order to follow up vaccine reaction if they occur, always give one vaccine high on the neck the other low if giving on the same side. It is preferable to give two shots on opposite sides of the neck. Be cognisant of the times there is lots of backflow of vaccine or you go in
With modified live vaccine don’t mix up more than you are going to use in the next hour and discard unused product at the end of the day. If drawn out sterilely killed vaccines and bacterins can be kept for a period (I use one week) and used up later. One must be cognisant of how the vaccine has been stored before you purchase it and on the way home. We send purchases home with ice packs in the summer and only use pharmaceutical suppliers we can trust. When handling cattle try and be diligent and vaccinate everyone. With escapees try your best to rerun them as they have not been treated. In order to develop an immune response cattle must be healthy, in good nutrition, especially minerals, and as stress free as possible. The vaccine is only as protective as the response the animal can muster. This is another common reason vaccinating can fail to protect. Always watch closely for expiry dates as these can sneak up on you. For herd protection some vaccines efficacy may only reach 80%. This means if vaccinating 100 animals 80 or more will develop adequate protection. This protective rate is not a lot different than that for a lot of human vaccines.
With so many different combinations of vaccines out there make sure the diseases you want to protect are in the vaccines. Don’t be fooled that eight- or nine-way vaccines has all the protection you need. That is simply not true. Producers may say I thought everything was in the eight-way vaccine. Vaccinate according to label instructions, have the cattle healthy and you can expect maximum protection. In my mind vaccines form the most integral part of any biosecurity program and are like an insurance program. Each calf is valuable and purebred ones even more so. Set a good example for your clients, vaccinate and don’t forget to pass that information on in the case of a new owner. The vaccination history is valuable information on any new purchase. The health of the entire herd depends on it. Please be ware this year clostridial vaccines with tetanus are in very short supply. This is especially true if you band your bull calves or purebred breeders that band their rejected bulls. There will be enough clostridial vaccine out there but not containing tetanus. Also, the one main scour vaccine is in short supply so this may mean switching to a different company which could alter the ideal time to vaccinate. Any time you purchase cattle double check the vaccination history and be aware of ideal timing of follow up vaccinations, if needed. It is far better to prevent disease through vaccination and good biosecurity practises. There are always new vaccines coming on the market and your herd vet can best sort out which are necessary for your herd. As an example, anthrax could be a new vaccine when there is an outbreak. There are two new mycoplasma pneumonias which will primarily be used in the feedlot. Processing and vaccinating your herd go hand in hand and these days shortages are not uncommon.

and out and squirt vaccine in the air. If in doubt, revaccinate right then, don’t hesitate. Monitor the usage to make sure the gun is dispensing the right amount, make sure air is out of the syringe and always change bent, burred, dull or dirty needles. This usually amounts to every 15 head or so, or for sure change needles when you reload the automatic syringe. Vaccines reactions (lumps or swellings) are normal what we want to avoid are infected sites or putting the vaccine intradermal (between the skin layers) or intramuscular if it is recommended subcutaneously. Needles used should have metal hubs and usually ¾-1 inch used for subcutaneous and as small a bore as possible for the vaccine to flow into which is usually 18 gauge or 16 gauge for thicker products.

All breeds do not need the same scrotal size, which means you can’t compare Limousin with other breeds because scrotal size will be different, and Limousin will need less scrotal size than other breeds to do the job. Scrotal circumference is a trait which is moderately to highly heritable. Research indicates that testicle size is an excellent indicator of age at puberty of a sire's daughters and is also related to seminal quality and quantity.

ROY LEWIS, DVM Dr. Roy Lewis has been a large animal veterinary practitioner for over 30 years with a cattle practice in Westlock, Alberta. His interests were herd health and bovine reproduction. Since Spring 2020 he has been doing consulting work in the veterinary field.
The Limousin Voice is published three times per year. One year subscription costs $35.00 per year ($36.75 with GST) in Canada, $50.00 USD per year in the USA and internationally. Cell phone photos will not be accepted, as their poor optical quality, bad light sensitivity, and wide angle lenses generate blurry, noisy or distorted photos that do not accurately represent your cattle. Cell phone cameras do not capture a sufficient number of pixels (enough image data) to use that photo in print.

Each blue dot at left is a pixel. The dark blue square represents the largest a 1 inch² picture at display resolution could be printed on a printing press and remain crisp.
Images taken at a low resolution (eg. Taken by a cell phone camera) or images that have been downsized cannot be enlarged again and remain crisp. When they are enlarged, the computer ‘makes up’ the missing or deleted pixels, resulting in blurry or ‘pixelated’ images.

Digital images are composed of individual dots of stored data, called pixels. Your computer screen or cell phone can display 72 pixels per inch (called display resolution). 300 pixels per inch is the minimum size required by a printing press to produce clear, crisp images (called print resolution). The more pixels an image has, the more detailed it is.
