I have been asked, and I’m sure you have too. While it may seem obvious to those of us who have experienced Topeka Collegiate, this is a valid question to those who are less familiar with the many benefits of an independent school education.

The choice to invest in Topeka Collegiate, and one’s child at an early age, is an important financial decision for any family.

The question of “Why Topeka Collegiate?” merits thoughtful consideration and answers.

For me, there are three key reasons, three differentiators, that demonstrate why investing in a child’s foundational education is the very best investment one can make.

An independent school is able to focus programming on the essential things that parents want for their child: to grow, learn, and thrive.

We are not bound to an established stagnant curriculum, paced toward an average achievement score and measured by the constant interruptions of standardized exams.

Rather, we hire the most talented teachers who are specialized in content and have a passion for instilling a love of learning and critical thinking.

With a smaller number of students in the classroom, teachers are able to support each individual student while providing creative, innovative Beyond the Book experiences.

The field trips, hands-on projects, assemblies, and long-term exploration of interesting topics allows each child to have fun while learning in a safer, supportive environment.

The outcomes are clear. Our graduates are successful.

We produce some of the very best students by helping each child shine on a daily basis. Since opening in 1982, our graduates have displayed incredible success, year after year.

Take, for example, the Topeka Collegiate class of 2016 college choices: nine are attending “Top 200” ranked universities,* one is overseas pursuing a professional

athletic career, another at an independent conservatory of music, while another graduate is attending one of the “Top 50” Liberal Arts Colleges.**

When parents invest in their child’s formative education, they give a gift that remains for life.

Each year we are honored to send our graduates into the world, having been a small but significant part of their journey. They are high-achieving high school students, college students, and beyond. They exemplify our mission to inspire and prepare for a successful future of academic excellence.

Topeka Collegiate instills confidence in a child. A belief in their future.

First, though, parents must make the choice to invest in their child in this way. We see the results in a child’s attitude and behaviors.

Students grow into strong scholars, ready for advanced education, prepared for leadership opportunities, and truly interested in being active citizens.

The success of the 2016 class is no anomaly. One of the best data points that indicates strong outcomes for our students is the National Merit Scholarship (NMS) program. We beam with pride when our students earn this national recognition. Take a look at the table on the previous page.

Recent examples include Adriane Caracioni ‘18, who is leading the Topeka Youth Commission, and Lilian Thornton ‘18, a Questbridge Scholar.

We are small but mighty. Our alums believe in their ability to do good things for others and are proud to take steps to improve their world.

BEYOND THE BOOK

Learning from the Ocean The culminating Beyond the Book experience at Topeka Collegiate is the eighth grade trip to Sea Camp. The class spends a week on the east or west coast or on an island for a hands-on unit on marine biology.

Students explore the ocean and land environments by participating in hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, animal dissection, and other lab activities.

The 2020 and 2021 graduating classes spent their Sea Camp week in Hawaii. The class of 2020 was able to travel before the pandemic, but having Sea Camp on the island afforded the class of 2021 with a more isolated and “socially distanced” experience.

In Hawaii, both classes were able to hike a volcano, experience inland clear water lakes and waterfalls, as well as snorkel in the ocean learning marine biology and learning about unique Hawaiian culture and history.

LEAVING A LEGACY

Where does it start?

Family has lasting impact at Topeka Collegiate & beyond In 2013, a new student came to Topeka Collegiate and joined Ms. Kido’s 3rd grade class.

Her name was Laura Beatty.

Laura fit in perfectly at Topeka Collegiate — she was funny and kind, curious and smart, caring and insightful.

Laura is the youngest of three kids, and from the time she began at Topeka Collegiate, her mom says she “flourished due to outstanding teachers, small class sizes, individual attention, and opportunities for enriched experiences.”

Laura graduated from Topeka Collegiate in 2019 and was the chosen speaker to represent her class in the graduation ceremony. She then went on to attend Topeka West High School where she is currently a junior, active in marching band and cheer.

She (along with fellow Topeka Collegiate alumni Teddy Decker ’18) joined 23 other high school students to attend the Washburn University High School Leadership Academy during the summer of 2021.

HSLA participants are students who have demonstrated leadership potential, a diversity of perspectives, who complement one another and who have had a variety of leadership experiences.

During HSLA, each student is paired with a peer mentor, and Laura’s mentor had this to say about her: “Laura is someone who is very eager to learn and cares deeply about the people in her life. She is an amazing student and friend to spend the week with.”

Laura’s parents, Bob and Stacey Beatty, by modeling excellence in their own

lives, certainly affected and shaped Laura’s passion for learning and community service.

Bob is chairman of the Political Science Department at Washburn University, and Stacey holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. She has professional experience as a psychotherapist, psychoeducational assessment consultant, organizational development consultant, and director of management research.

Stacey has served on the Board of Trustees for Topeka Collegiate since 2017 and also served on the Topeka Collegiate Head of School Search Committee, the Topeka West High School Site Council, and PTO. In addition to his university teaching responsibilities, Bob is a frequent contributor to political newscasts and

articles and has the ability to make politics accessible for the layperson.

Bob also volunteered as the Middle School basketball coach during Laura’s 6th through 8th grade years.

Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, and spent her life laying the foundation for a generation of young learners.

Peter and Sandra were committed to providing educational opportunities to children lacking access to quality programs.

Stacey and Bob are both committed parents who encourage their children to be global citizens and give back to their community.

The quality and depth Stacey and Bob bring to the table was assuredly affected by the influence of Stacey’s parents, Peter and Sandra Beak.

Dr. Beak was the James R. Eiszner Endowed Chair in Chemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he served on the faculty for nearly 60 years.

He was a leader in organic chemistry (physical and synthetic) and “brilliantly applied principles to advance our understanding of the structure and reactivity of organic compounds,” said Steven C. Zimmerman, the Roger Adams Professor of Chemistry at UIUC. “He also developed a number of important concepts that have found wide usage, including complex-induced proximity effects, the endo-cyclic restriction test, and dipole-stabilized carbanions to name just a few,” Steven said. “But what was extraordinary about Peter is how unassuming he was, always wanting to highlight the accomplishments of others, especially students.

Peter and Sandra Beak sponsored a full merit-based scholarship for a Topeka Collegiate middle schooler.

“His humanity was so genuine. It just didn’t matter whether you were an incoming freshman or the University President, Peter would treat you with the same level of respect and dignity.

He was uniformly loved.”

Their belief in hard work, perseverance, and pursuing ones’ dreams is something they have passed on to their children, their grandchildren, and countless others who had the opportunity to be their student, co-worker, or friend.

This is where it starts. It starts with one couple’s intentions to raise their children to be funny and kind, curious and smart, caring and insightful. And then two generations later, their grandchild is making a difference in her world just as they did.

“Its transformative impact on young lives was a bedrock family value,” Stacey said.

Dr. Beak passed away in February 2021. He and Sandra sponsored a full merit-based scholarship for a Topeka Collegiate middle schooler from 2019–2022. This scholarship paid for tuition, fees, and lunches for each of the three years of middle school.

Sandra, after receiving a B.A. in education from Miami University, traveled from Ohio to Southern California for her first teaching job.

The Beaks’ legacy and focus on education through philanthropy ensures that what they started will continue well into the future.

She had a 27 year career in three states as a kindergarten teacher, earned a

Beyond the Classroom From STEM education to summer travel, staff share about their lives Melanie Mullican

When the 2019-2020 academic year finished with a quick move to distance learning, I had the opportunity to serve on the newly created Eagles360 Taskforce.

I am honored to be the vice president of a women-driven outdoor Shakespeare performing group called Lady Shakes. We aim to present classic works without the restrictions of gender or ethnic boundaries while also engaging the community.

At that time, Taskforce members knew a novel virus global pandemic would not be resolved quickly.

The initial challenge our Taskforce faced in early summer 2020 was making decisions to reopen safely with on-campus learning in fall 2020 with little guidance from local, state or federal entities.

The foremost responsibility for all members of the Taskforce was the health and safety of everyone on our school campus. We also knew it was imperative we offer the best distance learning for our students.

The Eagles360 Program and Freedom with Responsibility pledge were written and adopted after many hours of collaborative work.

As an independent school we are change-makers with the flexibility and agility to best serve the students in our care.

Prekindergarten Teacher l Lady Shakes Theater Company

Our hope is that community members will come, express themselves with us, and experience the stories of The Bard (and other authors) in ways they may never have seen before.

We opened our season with a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in May 2021 and participated in NOTO Live in September by hosting creative presentations of short scenes and monologues.

We are looking forward to bringing more fun and important events to the Topeka and Shawnee County area.

Technology Innovation Teacher l Kansas Corn STEM As our society becomes further removed from the farm it has become

increasingly important to share the message of agriculture and its role in the Kansas economy and workforce.

For that reason I am fortunate to work for Kansas Corn Stem, funded by the Kansas Corn Commission and our Kansas corn farmers.

In this work I travel the state talking to students from Pre-kindergarten-12th grade about the importance of agriculture in feeding the growing population of the world, the role of genetics, research and engineering as well as the value of ethanol production.

In addition to sharing this message with thousands of students across the state each year, I also host teacher workshops. This makes engaging, hands-on lessons available to teachers and provides valuable tools which enable them to perform each lesson.

Director of Admissions, Diversity, and Social Responsibility l Community Engagement My family and independent school foundation cemented the importance of active citizenship, community service, and volunteering. As a relatively new Topekan, community service has

helped me become more connected to the community.

I work toward building a more diverse and inclusive community as a coach and facilitator for Topeka United’s MOSAIC Partners project. Serving on the city of Topeka’s Sustainability Advisory Board, I work toward a more environmentally conscious community that positively supports public health, well-being, and safety.

I participate in our city’s visioning project as a member of Momentum 2027’s Steering Committee. I am also involved in youth outreach as a Jayhawk Council Cub Scouts Den Leader for Pack 10 and a soccer coach for Upward Sports & Shawnee County Parks & Rec. For the State of Kansas, I advocate for reasonable utility rates for residents and small commercial ratepayers as a Board Member for Citizens’ Utility Ratepayers Board (CURB). Nationally, I am a certified climate leader and mentor with the Climate Reality Project.

I think that time is just as valuable as money. People of all ages can find time to give back to their communities. Find a cause that interests you.

By volunteering, you gain a deeper understanding of that cause. Whatever good deed you do in the world, big or small, every act matters.

Middle School Math l Exeter Academy Training During the summer of 2021, I

participated in Philip Exeter Academy’s math workshop alongside our academic dean, Michael Flax.

While there, we gleaned insight into an entirely unique way of approaching education in mathematics. Exeter Academy has developed a system entirely based on critical thinking and application rather than the “drill sergeant” style of math many of us are accustomed to.

This is the very same curriculum we use at Topeka Collegiate, and it was immensely validating to see how some of its originators approach it.

Through this experience, I not only gained experience with the material but also an appreciation and philosophy that I can pass on to my students so that they too can better benefit.

This was truly some of the most beneficial professional development of my career so far, and I would recommend it to any current or aspiring math teachers regardless of whether or not they use the same curriculum in their classroom.

Lower School Science l Annual Trip to Alaska Each summer, I spend a few weeks with my cousin in Petersburg, Alaska. This small fishing town (population 3,000) is located on Mitkof Island, one of many islands that make up the area known as the

Inside Passage (Southeast Alaska). We hike, fish, whale watch, bear watch, and banana slug watch!

The first year we stayed in a forest cabin that you could only get to by boat or float plane. No electricity, no running water, and four hours of darkness a day. I never needed my flashlight.

We would load our fish into a wheelbarrow at the dock and wheel it (with huge smiles) through town to a local restaurant. They would process the fish for us and keep it frozen in a box.

We ate fresh halibut, dungeness crab, and prawn EVERY night for dinner, cooked up a variety of ways on a camp stove.

As years passed, things evolved.

Now my cousin has a cabin in town (with showers and a laundry room), his own fishing boat, and we do our own processing.

We have expanded our fishing to include king salmon and are learning how to smoke it.

This is a play hard, work hard trip. I am thankful for the fish I am able to bring back and share with my family; for the geological features, glaciers, and icebergs I encounter; for the amazing obstacle-course-like hikes which abound — huge trees, lichen, moss, and scat; and for the amazing up-close, wildlife observation opportunities which range from jellyfish smaller than a dime to humpback whales.

Susan Garlinghouse Humanitarian Award An award presented to a student who has made significant contributions to the community, provided service to improve humankind and demonstrated an innovative approach to addressing community needs, an ability to lead, and a legacy of positive change.

Named for a former science teacher at Topeka Collegiate, the award was given to a student who is a lifelong learner, curious about humanities and science, who takes pride in his or her work and goes well beyond what is required; a student who “demonstrates cheer and humor, acceptance and kindness.”

“The members of the Eagles360° Taskforce took on the Herculean task of thinking through the health implications of COVID-19, while also designing scenarios to keep our entire school community safe and learning.

Their dedication cannot be overstated.

Just as the teachers serving on the taskforce were wrapping up an intense final quarter and beginning their summer break, they stepped up to think creatively and critically about shaping the upcoming school year. We met for multiple hours a week, multiple times. I cannot thank them enough for their efforts. The Eagles360° Program would not be what it is today without them.”

Eagle360° Strategy Map The Eagles360° Program was designed to provide a comprehensive solution for student learning, whether attending class on campus or online.

As an independent school, Topeka Collegiate is uniquely positioned to customize precautions based on the needs of our school community.

Topeka Collegiate will periodically review these scenarios, alongside government regulations and CDC guidance, to determine if we should increase/decrease precautions or transition to a different scenario.

We intentionally designed the Eagles360° Strategy Map to resemble a rotating dial. We will adjust the dial, as needed, to create a safe learning experience for our school community.

Guiding Principle No. 1: Health & Safety We have a responsibility to help one another stay healthy and safe.

Just as the school’s mission is to encourage civic responsibility, our school must model responsible personal hygiene, best practices and contentiousness in all decision-making during COVID-19.

Guiding Principle No. 2: Teaching & Learning We will partner with parents and the broader community to refine online teaching approaches using research-based strategies. Leveraging innovative tools, we will continue to fulfill our mission of preparing students for an advanced education.

Guiding Principle No. 3: The Whole Child We continue to be committed to every student’s social emotional learning and wellness, on campus or online. Through creative opportunities to connect outside of the classroom, we’ll encourage a growth mindset and support students’ resiliency. l Standard Campus: All students are on campus and in their

classroom.

l Small Group Campus: This scenario was developed to fit

within the large gathering limitations seen in recent government regulations. In this scenario, students are divided into groups less than ten. If a classroom is divided, a rotating schedule will be implemented so students have equal time in their homeroom and in a satellite classroom. Precautions will be in place. l Distance Learning: This scenario was developed in case

government requirements prevent students from returning to campus, or if we need to move to Distance Learning at any time throughout the school year. Eagles360° Reflection We haven’t adequately celebrated the success of the Eagles360° program to-date.

That’s been intentional.

Celebrating Eagles360° has felt insensitive to the trauma caused

by COVID-19. We’ve all lost something.

Regardless of our ability to mitigate the spread or encourage precautions, we haven’t found the right time to reflect upon the impact of our efforts.

To be clear, we are grateful for the leadership team that mobilized a taskforce toward the development of a thoughtful, reliable plan that became the Eagles360° Program.

We are proud that we secured schoolwide testing and kept our campus open. As we continue to navigate uncertainty about another spike, we still aren’t celebrating.

However, Collegiate Life, as a publication, is meant to do more than just celebrate our school. It is also meant to document the history.

Topeka Collegiate, COVID-19, and our response will be remembered.

We hope that you will believe, as we do, that it was a time when we came together to keep one another safe.

To those reading this decades from now, remember this period of time as:

l A time of social responsibility

when students and faculty took the “Freedom with Responsibility” Pledge and made the daily sacrifice of wearing masks to stay healthy and on our campus. The name of this pledge was inspired by our first Head of School, Mac Rives, who guided the school’s beginning with this mantra. l A time of generosity when we

received nearly $20,000 in donations, spearheaded by Pat Gideon, to help school families successfully navigate the COVID-related financial crisis. Additionally, we offered

mini-grants to local non-profit organizations and small businesses, thanks to the generosity of the Kokari Foundation. l A time of ingenuity when the

Eagles360° Taskforce responded to an unprecedented situation with a series of strategic decisions that ensured the successful opening of our campus for the 2020-2021 school year.

Benjamin Bammes is the Director of Research and Development at Direct Electron, which is a company specializing in cameras for electron microscopy. This work is exciting not only because his company strives to be at the bleeding edge of camera technology but also because Benjamin enjoys traveling around the world to collaborate with researchers and speak about his work at international scientific conferences. Benjamin and his wife Stephanie have been married almost 17 years and have four energetic children, Elliott, Parker, Cora, and Zoe, who keep them busy!

Blake Whitaker works as an Analyst with the federal government and enjoys running in his free time. He recently responded to our Topeka Collegiate Alumni Survey and had this memory to share of his time here — “When I was in middle school, I took an elective several times that Mrs. Franklin taught called ‘Hurray for Hollywood.’ We watched classic films and learned about important parts of film history or styles of filming. I have very fond memories of watching Rear Window, The Third Man, Psycho, and the The Maltese Falcon.

Clearly Alfred Hitchcock was an important part of the course. But we also watched other classics like High Noon, To Catch a Thief, and many more. She introduced us to the idea of Film Noir and many other important concepts. I still remember this elective fondly and almost always stop and watch these movies when they are on TV. Most importantly, it gave me an early appreciation for an art form

that I really had not thought of as an art form at all.”

2001 Asona Lui traveled back to Kansas this past spring gave the graduation address to the Class of 2021. She was able to share many words of wisdom from her experiences as a physician during the pandemic as well as lessons she has learned throughout her life and education. She and her husband Marco live in San Diego where Asona is a resident physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California — San Diego.

Jordan Carter serves on the Topeka Collegiate Board of Trustees where she is chair of the Marketing Committee. In our recent Alumni Survey, she gave these kudos to Topeka Collegiate — “I learned so much about being a global citizen and navigating the world, from interpersonal rela-

tionships to empathy to curiosity about other people’s backgrounds. The people at Topeka Collegiate really lived its values and taught me the importance of caring about global ideals.” She and her fiancée Nick Gitto ’06 got married in the midst of the pandemic and, for the best news, their daughter Charlotte was born in December 2021!

Cristal Coufal (Hannigan) responded to our Topeka Collegiate Alumni Survey with these memories – “Mr. MacDonald was amazing at keeping you on track and interested with his stories that somehow always tied into the lesson plan. Making hot air balloons in lower school, taking the whole grade out to my parents lake house and having park rangers (I think?) speak, and of course, SeaCamp!” Cristal and her husband Josh live in Topeka where Cristal is a Provider Records Specialist in the Health Insurance Industry.

Edward Collazo earned his bachelor degrees in philosophy and economics with minors in psychology and music from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon his return to Topeka, he was the assistant forensics coach at Shawnee Heights High School, and there tutored students in every math subject from pre-algebra to pre-calculus.

In 2021, after a stint teaching math at Topeka Collegiate, he returned to his high school alma mater, Topeka High, as a math instructor.

Luke Miltz works for Netsmart in Overland Park, KS, as a Marketing Campaign Manager and is also currently pursuing a Master of Divinity through Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. When asked to share how Topeka Collegiate prepared him for a successful career, Luke answered, “Specifically,

my ability to conduct research, problem-solve, and eloquently present findings in writing and presentation were impacted early-on by participation in learning opportunities like History Day, Earth Works, and Exchange City. I demonstrate an ability to out-perform colleagues in this way in my work today.” On his LinkedIn profile, he shares that he is passionate about using corporate power and platform to do good in the world and about seeing personal growth in others.

Cooper Self is a 2022 J.D. candidate at Creighton University School of Law. He married his wife, Desirae, in September 2019. A year later, they welcomed their first child, Lane Walker, and are expecting their second child in January 2022.

Austin McClure graduated in 2020 with a Master’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Kansas. He was able to pass the CPA exam over the course of 2020 and began working for a Public Accounting Firm in late 2020. A lot of his time lately has been spent traveling to hospitals to audit them. He still travels to race (NHRA dragsters), which, although it has been greatly limited due to COVID, hopes to focus on racing more again in the near future.

Ella (Brown-Richards) Peterson graduated from the University of Kansas in May 2019 with a degree in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies with minors in Psychology, Business, and Human Sexuality. Six months later, on Nov. 19, Ella married Ethan Peterson at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Topeka. Ella is currently working as a

student financial services counselor at Rockhurst University. This summer she began a graduate program at Arizona State University, working toward a Master of Arts in International Human Rights Law &andSocial Justice.

Ella and Ethan live in Kansas City and are the proud parents of two lucky pups.

Skyler Dykes received a Bachelor of Arts with Honors and Distinction in Music and French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May 2020. She then began a joint Juris Doctor and Master’s in Musicology at Washington University in St. Louis in August of 2021.

While this degree combination may seem unorthodox, Skyler says it suits her academic and professional interests to a tee. She is not certain where these two degrees will lead her, but she is grateful to WashU for welcoming her desire to engage in multidisciplinary studies at the graduate level and to the friends, family, and colleagues who assisted her in getting to this point.

Max Stucky Halley works as a Battering Intervention Group Facilitator for the Family Peace Initiative. In his free time, he

2015 Cheyenne (Kahler) Roemer is an editor and is in her fourth year of being a track coach at Hayden High School. She and her husband Colton are expecting their first child, a daughter, in December. A surprise baby shower was organized in October by friend and fellow Collegiate alum Elena Blum ’11. Baby Roemer is sure to be spoiled by big brother Tannin!

Jeremiah Shipman has been accepted into the University of Kansas School of Medicine, after pursuing degrees in Medical Biochemistry and Spanish at Kansas State University,. He began classes this fall and is currently focusing on family medicine.

Trinity Barnett graduated from Washburn Rural High School in the International Baccalaureate program and was a member of National Honor Society. She graduated in the top 10% of her class and was named a Kansas Honor Scholar. During high school, Trinity was an officer for the Topeka Zoo Youth Council and worked at The Shack, which is the WRHS merchandising company. She is now attending Elon University in Elon, NC, majoring in psychology.

Catya Carrington graduated from Interlochen and is currently a freshman at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She is a Soprano Classical Voice Major studying to get her Bachelor of Music in Voice. She spent the summer in Topeka and was in two Helen Hocker Theatre shows for the Bathhouse Players - Sense and Sensibility and Starmites.

Sho Glashausser graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Washburn Rural High School and received the 2021 WRHS IB Citizen Scholarship. He graduated in the top 1% of his class and was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and a Kansas Governor’s Scholar. During high school, Sho was active in National Honor Society, track and field, cross country, chess club, and co-led the Topeka Collegiate After School Adventures Chess

Program as well. At graduation, he received the award for Outstanding Biological Science Student. During his senior year, he earned the title of “Candidate Master” from the U.S. Chess Federation, and throughout the year, he was the top-rated K-12 chess player in the state. He is currently in the midst of a gap year, during which he is focusing on teaching chess — online and in person, individually and to groups (including at Topeka Collegiate) — and on competing in tournaments on the national circuit. Next fall, he will attend Swarthmore College, just outside Philadelphia, majoring in philosophy and pre-med.

Xavier Harrison was a 2020 Governor’s scholar at Topeka High School and was the anchor of their daily newscast, Morning Report. He is currently studying Engineering at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Andrew Johnson graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Longview High

School in Longview, TX. During his senior year, he and another IB student helped raise $4,225 for the Asbury House Child Enrichment Center by holding a virtual 5K run. Upon graduation, Andrew received the Texas Gold Star with Merit award and will be attending Oxford College at Emory University in the fall. Oxford College is an undergraduate division of Emory University for first- and second-year students, emphasizing stellar teaching and student leadership.

Lilian Thornton entered a piece in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition, and her piece received a Gold Key Award during the 2020-21 school year.

Her work was exhibited at Mark Arts Gallery in Wichita earlier this year as part of the Eastern Kansas Scholastic Art Awards. Lilian is also a Questbridge Scholar and will be attending Dartmouth in the fall.

Elena Pacioianu is a senior at Topeka High School. This summer, she received recognition for being on the Washburn University CEP Dean’s Honor Roll for the 20202021 school year. This fall, she was inducted into the Topeka High chapter of the National Honor Society.

Rishi Pandya is a senior at Washburn Rural High School and is a National Merit Commended Scholar. He is a member of the varsity debate team, competing in Open and Public Forum Debate styles.

Perry Payne is a junior at Topeka High School. He has been recognized by TopSports.news as one of 15 boy swimmers to watch in 2021-2022.

She is a varsity athlete on their volleyball and basketball teams and a member of the National Honor Society.
