EDITOR’S COMMENT Happy new year

JAGUAR EXHIBITION HALL, RICOH ARENA

MEN Expo preview

Here’s what you need to know

Greetings, mobile electronics industry, and a happy new year to you all! Hopefully you had a good break and are raring to go, eager to make a cracking start to 2013. So let’s make sure our sales successes start right now, and that January won’t only be remembered as the month where we keep writing ‘2012’ by accident on our cheques and invoices until we get used to the new date. One of the ways to really kick things off – and that won’t cost you a penny – is to register for your free ticket for this year’s MEN Expo. It’s taking place at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, from Tuesday, March 5-Wednesday, March 6. Just head online to www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu – or call the ticket hotline on 01268 754897 – and be sure to bag your place. It’s the biggest industry event of the year, and a chance to check out the newest products and developments. All it takes is one of your rivals to pop along instead, and already they’ll have an advantage. You can’t afford to miss this – and to help you out, we’ve even prepared a preview on page 4. By grabbing yourself a ticket, you’ll be helping out your business – and isn’t that one of your new year’s resolutions? It should be right at the top, ahead of joining a gym, eating more healthily or packing in smoking. In fact, the Expo can help with a number of resolutions you should be making. For one, don’t you want to make more time for friends and family? Well, by attending the Expo you’ll see a lot of old faces, and many from the ‘family’ that is the mobile electronics industry. Or what if you made a pledge to learn something new? The Expo has lots of workshops and seminars over the two days to help you get to grips with various topics and products. And as for smoking or drinking less, or not eating junk food, attend the Expo and you’re going to feel a lot more reassured and less stressed than you would do, and won’t feel the need to indulge in such vices. So it’s simple, really. Get yourself an Expo ticket and you’ll be able to keep a whole load of new year’s resolutions in one hit. And how many years have started with you being able to say that? Enjoy the issue! Chris Anderson Managing editor, chris@chrisandersonmedia.com

Record auto presence at CES This year’s technology show has more car makers attending than ever The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is being held this year from January 8-11. Depending on when you’re reading this, you might be getting ready to go, have just got back, or are perhaps annoyed that you didn’t get to go. The show is the biggest event of its kind in the world, and traditionally the place where aftermarket companies launch all of their new products for the year. However, the times are changing. In the current climate, much of the aftermarket no longer has the budget to attend, or update its ranges as often to justify going. And when you consider that car manufacturers are including more clever technology in their own cars as standard, what does that mean? Well, in the run-up to the 2013 show, organisers CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) were reporting a record-setting presence for the automotive industry – mainly

due to huge stands courtesy of Audi, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia and Subaru, as well as the aftermarket brands still in attendance. It seems that the fine line between motor show and technology show is indeed starting to blur. Highlights of the 2013 show include electric drive technology, new and improved charging stations for electric cars, and products to help drivers park, monitor their speed or avoid collisions. And with so much factory-fit technology these days, the aptly-named presentation, ‘Are Automakers Running the Aftermarket Off the Road?’, will be worth checking out. See our next issue for a full report. www.cesweb.org

Bosch

Cobra on CCTV Drivers like self-driving cars Cobra has spoken out on a possible solution to the increasing problem of stolen cargo from lorries across Europe – which could represent opportunities to the mobile electronics installer. According to a report released by the European Commission (EC), cargo theft from lorries within the EU costs over 8 billion Euros every year. In calling for increased levels of security, Cobra UK’s managing director Andrew Smith has suggested the installation of CCTV cameras in the cab and load areas, streaming video across low-cost 3G networks, with footage used in the event of a court case. A typical installation of Cobra’s Global Live CCTV with two cameras has an RRP of around £1,200. www.cobravehiclesecurity.co.uk

A survey carried out by manufacturer Bosch has concluded that British motorists are generally positive about the concept of an autonomous car. Apparently over one third of motorists said autonomous cars would reduce road accidents, although men seemed more at ease with the idea – 44% of men compared to 21% of women. Bosch has invested in many driver-assist technologies over the years, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and a Predictive Emergency Braking System, all of which are said to form the foundations of the autonomous car. www.bosch.co.uk

he D Love advertising initiative is part of a two-year £10 million radio industry campaign overseen by Digital Radio UK that will run until the government switchover announcement later in 2013. And progress has been impressive since the start of the campaign, as 16 million digital radios (including DAB, hybrid and internet) have now been sold in the UK. Digital radios are also proving to be one of a handful of top performers in the consumer electronics category, according to retail

market research company GfK. Research has shown that digital radio sales in the last quarter (Q3 2012) were up 11% year on year.

More multiplexes

T

his major communications drive coincides with further improvements being made to digital radio coverage and the announcement of local services in four new regions. These new local DAB multiplexes are being launched by Arqiva with the support of Global and the BBC, and bring DAB stations to an additional 1.5 million people for the first time. The first new local DAB region is Oxford, switched on in December by culture minister Ed Vaizey.

The minister has confirmed that he is planning to make a radio switchover announcement during 2013, and is encouraged by the progress being made on digital listening and the fitting of digital radio in new cars. But there is still more to do – 2013 is set to be a crucial year for digital radio. For all enquiries regarding the above, please contact sam.bonham@digitalradiouk.com

Advertorial /// Connects2 ///

Connects2 adds control Connects2 has launched a new patch lead to connect the latest Parrot head units with its steering wheel control interfaces. Martyn Williams watches it installed in a VW Passat Parrot’s Asteroid Classic installed in VW’s Passat using the Connects2 fascia adaption kit CT24VW03. C2 also provides a kit for the new double DIN Asteroid Smart head unit

T

he Parrot Asteroid Classic single DIN head unit, and the new double DIN Asteroid Smart, are very capable units. Both mechless devices, they make a range of applications available via their touch-sensitive screens (3.2 inch on the single DIN, 6.2 on the Smart model). Parrot has also launched

Asteroid Market, with even more apps available to download, adding to such functionality as navigation, weather reports, Bluetooth, Android compatibility, iPod and iPhone control, a cheapest fuel finder and more. But hi-tech does not have to mean complicated, or difficult for the installer

to fit – and thanks to a new patch lead from Connects2, these units will now work with its full range of steering wheel control interfaces. That means some of the functions of these highly desirable units can be operated via a car’s existing controls. Here is how the lead and the unit can be installed into a VW Passat.

The Asteroid comes with a GPS antenna, microphone, USB and aux input extension leads. There’s also a dedicated iPod cable supplied.

Fascia kit and the new patch lead – CTASTEROIDLEAD – shown connected to the T-harness via steering interface box part number CTSVW002.2. The new dedicated Asteroid interface lead has built-in electronics and plugs directly into the back of the head unit.

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

The original fascia trim panel is clipped in and can hang aside without needing to disconnect the airbag warning light connection. Four Torx screws retain the head unit.

The A post trim is removed, allowing wiring for the microphone and the GPS antenna, which was mounted behind the tax disc to make it less noticeable.

The interior light panel has clips and a pair of Torx screws. Parrot supplies a stick-on and clip-on mount for its advanced microphone.

The three connectivity leads from the Asteroid were routed into the Passat’s glovebox, which has seven Torx fastenings and also needs careful levering in the top corner shown.

STEP 5

STEP 6

STEP 7

STEP 8

Parrot provides adequate cable lengths for passengers to use devices away from the glovebox. The Passat has a handy rectangular hole in the top of the glovebox, so leads can be pulled through and the box replaced without having to disconnect the air bag plug.

This Passat model has the twin Fakra aerial connector – requiring Connects2’s CT27AAS6 adaptor, which converts to the traditional banana plug aerial socket for the Asteroid’s tuner.

The extra cabling is not a problem due to shallowness of the Asteroid chassis. The Classic has four USB ports, one is dedicated to Apple devices, leaving one spare for a 3/4G dongle after the GPS antenna and USB extension are fitted. The phono sockets are front and rear full range audio line-outs additional to the built-in amplification. There are also subwoofer outputs from the Asteroid’s loom.

Once installed, there is another Asteroid feature to reveal – an SD card slot behind the removable security panel.

EVENT /// 4G seminar ///

What’s happening with 4G?

A Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar took place last month to update attendees on the future of 4G technology – and what it means for in-car. Chris Anderson reports

T

here has been a lot of buzz in the press recently about the arrival of 4G technology, and even a series of TV commercials, featuring actor Kevin Bacon, for a new network that claims to be the first in the UK to offer it to customers. As smartphones become increasingly popular – with 40% of the population now owning one, and an estimated 60% by 2015 – and the growing importance of integrating these handsets with technology in the car, what role will something like 4G play, and what exactly is going on with it currently? Some of these questions were answered at last month’s Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar, entitled Finally 4G. The event took place over a morning, with guest speakers giving their own thoughts on 4G LTE (‘Fourth Generation – Long Term Evolution’), to give the technology its full name, discussing everything from its value to businesses to services and applications. New network EE, which stands for Everything Everywhere, operated by the combined efforts of Orange and T-Mobile, and offering 4G since October, took centre stage, with a lavish stand outside the conference hall, and its vice president of wholesale and M2M (Machine-to-Machine), Marc Overton, the first speaker of the day. “4G is on average around five times faster than 3G,” he said. “It’s more reliable, with a sweeping range of technological advancements. EE services 16 major UK cities, and will achieve 70% coverage by 2013 – 98% in 2014. London

14 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

will also have the biggest 4G footprint of any European city.” Through his introduction, Overton set the scene, but pointed out that speed isn’t the only aspect of 4G to celebrate, as the increased capacity allows for higher levels of service innovation. Speakers from the other event sponsors – networks O2, Vodafone and Three UK, each looking to launch their own 4G services very soon – backed this up, revealing their own plans and approach. Some interesting facts emerged. Matthew Braovac of Vodafone pointed out that Europe is at the very beginning of its 4G journey, but can learn from early adopters such as the US. He pointed out that in the States, services like Netflix and Pandora experienced a surge in their

4G is on average around five times faster than 3G use on mobile devices because of 4G, while US businesses reported increased productivity due to their employees sending and receiving more data. Phil Sheppard of Three UK elaborated on this, revealing that 98% of network traffic these days is data, and only 2% phone calls, and said that if a good connection is provided, more innovation will happen. But he also said that 3G has come a long way, with speeds close to 4G, and in this industry it can be difficult to predict exactly what will happen. A few of the in-car benefits were touched upon by Derek McManus of O2. He said that with an improved capacity for sending information, a mobile device could give an insurance company regular updates on the quality of the user’s driving, building an accurate picture over time to help determine their premium. There are medical applications too, with the example of a 4G-equipped ambulance currently operating in Germany, where information concerning a patient, including scans or readings,

can be relayed to a doctor at the hospital during the journey, allowing them to be treated ahead of their arrival. Speakers from Ofcom then talked about how they plan to regulate and develop 4G, and how they will award spectrums to the various networks. The remaining guests, as they discussed services and applications, both championed the benefits of 4G and outlined its challenges. “It’s not just about being faster, it’s about being more consistent,” said Ilicco Elia, head of mobile at LBi. “The mobile phone is the most personal of devices – the people in your Phonebook are those you know by name – and adverts and content need to be more personal too, that’s when 4G will really take off.” It looks like 4G is coming, and no doubt this year will see a big difference with coverage increases and more networks coming online. As for in-car, the medium-term applications could see 4G benefitting in-car media, with several manufacturers already planning LTE-connected cars for full series production. These will support multiple applications such as streaming media or business usage via an in-car hotspot, real-time updates for navigation systems, and richer location-based content – in fact, BMW is launching its own in-car LTE mobile hotspot shortly, which is a removable device providing Wi-Fi connectivity to passengers. By integrating 4G into public transport and traffic report systems, journey planning could also be improved across the board. In the short term, maybe there will be aftermarket hotspots, or new ways to integrate your faster 4G-equipped smartphone with existing in-car technology. Either way, with the improved networks and coverage, there could definitely be opportunity for the installer. More info at www.ee.co.uk

Telematics install

I’ve got a 2009 Porsche Cayman coming in this week for a Parrot MKi9100 install. Have fitted this before on other cars, but never on a Porsche. Any ideas on the best way to do it? Jez Senior moderator on Ifitstuff.com Ash Sharma tackled this job a while back, and posted the results in detail on the forum along with pics. He achieved some pretty good results, and proved how straightforward it could be. Start by unclipping and removing the central locking button from its housing above the head unit. Then remove both trim panels either side of the centre console to enable you to get in through the back – a T30 is holding each in place, and with these out of the way you’ll see two T20 screws and another side trim. There is space here to hide the main Parrot control unit. Now unclip the lower panel below the head unit. Also unclip the silver surround by the gearstick, and then the black trim beneath it should pull out. Removing the standard head unit is easy enough with an Allen key, pushed into each slot and turned 90 degrees. Then undo a 7mm head bolt from the left side of the unit about three quarters of the way. This should be enough to slide the unit completely out and get the Parrot loom in behind. Look for the car’s +15 ignition cable running from the fusebox – it’s red and white, so test to make sure you have the right one. Moving back to the Parrot screen, there is a cubby hole in front of the gear lever that makes a good location, with just two screws holding it in place. Remove the screws and the trim piece for the time being. The mounting brackets supplied with the kit are enough to hold it in place. The cabling for the phone can run through the side of the glovebox, so the phone can be connected and then everything closed back up. The mic, meanwhile, goes next to the interior light, with the trim panel simply unclipping. All cables run down and connect to the main box hidden at the base of the centre console, behind the trim removed earlier.

Has anyone fitted a telematics system to the new Peugeot 508, on a 2012 plate? Got one coming in, and I’ve heard it has a few options for hiding boxes away. Tom Harry Pearson on Ifitstuff.com recently tackled the same job. He warns in his write-up that it’s not the quickest of cars to do, with, as he says, “typical Peugeot and Citroën screws all over the place.” That said, once the trim is all out of the way, there are a lot of options in terms of where to place the kit. “Fuse box as per norm behind the glovebox,” Harry says. “There are three screws visible on the top of the glovebox, with one underneath in front of the fabric cover. The panel on end of the dash at the side of glovebox pulls forward, and it’s a bit tricky, but will give if you can use a trim tool to pull at it. This reveals one screw.” After that, the kick panel needs to come off – remove the plastic trim that runs across the sill first, as this will reveal the screw securing the kick panel trim. Pull it towards you, and look out for the metal clips holding it in place. Once out of the way you’ll be able to see another screw for the glovebox. Another panel to remove is the one running along from where the button to open the glovebox button is located along the centre console. “There’s a screw securing part of it at the bottom by the footwell,” Harry says. “The other two screws are hidden by a piece of trim at the side of the gearlever. This pulls out and then up, but be careful as it can be flimsy, and it’s easy to break the clips. Once off this reveals two screws, so take them out, then pull the panel, as it’s only clipped in after this. This will reveal the final two screws for the glovebox. You won’t get it completely out though, as the passenger air bag key switch is in there.” After that it’s on with fitting the tracking system and sorting the wiring. “The feeds I used were the 12V permanent, which is thick blue, running across the fusebox/BSI,” says Harry. “Then the 12V ignition is a thick(ish) beige top right, going into the green plug, then the earth is the body or known green/yellow.”

DEMO CAR /// Alpine Peugeot ///

Alpine invasion

The latest demo car from Alpine Europe is headed to our shores – see it first at the MEN Expo in March, or book it for your own event. Chris Anderson reports

W

hen talking about Alpine’s latest demo car, built at its Germany HQ, it’s easy for Manfred Stengl to reel off the numbers – there are six subwoofers mounted in the back, all run by one amplifier, the whole car took an estimated 650 hours to build, and it was all a two-man job. And before we get into any further details, you should know that Manfred is one of those two (and presumably very tired) men, with Christoph Thon working alongside him. “I oversee the budget and the schedule, but the hardest part of my job is coming up with the ideas,” Manfred explains. “As for Thoni, his experience and building skills, as well as his creative input during the design phase, are extremely valuable.” By putting their heads together, the duo 18 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

tried to plan something that had not been seen before. It began when they spotted the Peugeot RCZ at a car show, impressed by its sporty design, performance and affordability. Getting the car into the workshop, some of its factory locations also proved ideal for the aftermarket kit that went in. “Dropping the head unit in the dash was a piece of cake,” says Manfred, “and we used a 2DIN kit from our partner ACV. Retaining all of the original functions of the vehicle, such as the onboard computer, parking sensors and the stalk controls can be tricky with modern cars, but we got the solutions we needed from Connects2.” And it sounds like the SPR-60C speakers went in as easily as the double DIN. “The factory locations are a good base, as they are quite high compared to some vehicles,”

Manfred confirms. “Attaching the tweeters to the A pillars also helped to bring the stage up. And there is no separate processor in this car – all of the set-up was done via the one built into the ICS-X8 head unit. The vocals are precise and stable, and do not move up and down depending on the pitch.” In fact, that double DIN ICS-X8 has a few other tricks too, as it’s the first Alpine unit available to feature MirrorLink, connecting to a smartphone, with all of the functionality and apps then controllable via the 7 inch touchscreen. The Nokia and Samsung bring different capabilities to the system, such as web browsing or Google Navigation and internet radio, depending on the manufacturers’ app, hence the reason both are featured for demo purposes.

THE DETAILS lA lpine ICS-X8 double DIN unit, with Nokia 603 or Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone l Alpine NVE-M300P navigation system l Alpine MRX-M240 mono amplifier l Alpine MRX-F65 four-channel amplifier l Alpine SPR-60C component speakers l 6x Alpine SWR-843D subwoofers l 2x Alpine TME-S370 6.5 inch screens l Alpine HCE-C157D reversing camera

But while the car still looks fairly ordinary at the front end, it’s a different story when you look to the rear. The back seats have gone, and in their place is a wall of six 8 inch SWR-843D subwoofers, with everything taken care of by the two amplifiers under the bootlid – an MRX-M240 for the bass, and an MRX-F65 four-channel running the component speakers in an active

We are now collecting reservation requests from our customers all over Europe configuration, to give the mids lots of punch and control. “Initially we planned the system with four subs, but we wanted to prove what guts the MRX-M240 had, so eventually we opted for six,” says Manfred. “But we had a lot of discussion on how best to build the sub rack. The outer two are now built

into the car body pretty much, and we’ve used leather to hide the joins between the individual enclosures. On the rear side we’ve raised the bar by opting for a piano black surface.” The two 7 inch screens and reversing camera aren’t the only finishing touch, however, as something a little unusual was required for this car. “In Japan, we have a high-end speaker line called DDLinear, which have a copper finish, and this really inspired us,” says Manfred. “We’ve wanted to try copper plating before, and this time had the confidence to do it. Little touches really highlight the amps, speakers and subs, and the effect it has had on the OZ rims is amazing.” The aluminium arches outlining the twin bubble roof were plated too, with copper rings around the speakers and white LEDs setting it all off nicely. Even the back of the subs

received the copper touch. “Once you drop something as reflective as those into a woofer enclosure, you have to make sure it’s clean in there,” Manfred laughs. So now that the hard work is done, it seems like a road trip is in order – the car is set to make its UK debut at the MEN Expo in March, and will then be seen at the NEC’s Gadget Show Live in April. That could mean more stats being racked up, in terms of how many appearances or dealers it can make its way to. “We are now collecting reservation requests from our customers all over Europe,” Manfred reveals. “All we know is that it won’t stay parked in our garage for long.” To ask about the availability of the Alpine Peugeot RSZ for your event or open day,

PRODUCT FOCUS /// Security update ///

Securely does it A number of brands have been updating their security products recently and expanding their ranges. Chris Anderson finds out what’s on offer

W

ith the amount of alarms and immobilisers fitted to vehicles as standard these days, it could be argued that there isn’t as much happening in this market as there used to be. But don’t be fooled – interesting technological developments, and also possible growth areas beyond just customer cars, could unleash new potential for installers. One of the technologies that has caused a stir of late is Directed Electronics’ SmartStart system, available on its Clifford and Viper products. By downloading a compatible app to their smartphone, the user is then able to control and monitor their vehicle from anywhere in the world, and lock or unlock as required. Operating the system via a touchscreen phone in this way should definitely create a bit of excitement if you were able to demo it in your store, and it certainly creates more bragging rights among friends than a regular alarm system might allow. Other innovations include Cobra’s wireless alarm system, with no drilling or extra wiring required, and these are products that can be applied beyond the automotive sector. The security of plant and agricultural machinery in rural areas has been in the news lately, as have vans and lorries, where there cargo is targeted by thieves in loading bays and at border checkpoints. Catalytic converters – which contain gold and platinum – are also in need of protection. Would it be a good idea to visit companies who use this type of machinery and make them an offer?

22 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

Cobra There are several vehicle security solutions from Cobra – and two actually took the top spots in the Best Alarm System and Best Security Device categories at the recent MEN Awards. Top alarm was the AK4615, part of the brand’s wireless 4600 alarm series, reducing fitting times, and available with or without a remote control. There is also a builtin immobiliser, passive arming, and a threeyear warranty as standard. The Best Security Device winner, meanwhile, was the CobraTrak 5 tracking system, with Thatcham Category 5 approval, the highest accreditation possible. Cobra 01932 772400, www.cobravehiclesecurity.co.uk

Clifford Founded in 1976, Clifford pioneered many of the innovations and features found in today’s remote-controlled security systems. Last year, it became one of the brands distributed in the UK by Car Audio & Security (CAS). Clifford’s new Can-Bus alarms and accessories will be available through the company shortly, and CAS will also be running an extensive training programme at its Hayes headquarters for dealers. Clifford also makes use of the SmartStart technology found in Viper’s product line – see opposite for more info. Car Audio & Security 020 8569 1543, www.caraudiosecurity.com

Code Alarm Vehicle security solutions by Code Alarm are now available in the UK through Armour Automotive. Highlights include the CA5153, a deluxe remote start and keyless entry system with a range of 1,200 ft and compatibility with manual or automatic transmission vehicles. It can even be setup for use with a telematics system, or to include a defrost mode for use on cold mornings. Other systems are available, with varying levels of operating range, inputs and outputs. Discounts available to installers for bulk orders of five or more. Armour Automotive 01420 487110, www.armourauto.com

Laserline Laserline has just launched the 691T Thatcham-approved 2-1 Can-Bus upgrade alarm, replacing the 670T, with an all new, simple format, up-to-date vehicle-specific technical sheets, and the option of a Can-Bus indicator pulse arm and disarm, and also analogue arm and disarm inputs. All Laserline systems are said to combine advanced technology with intelligent software for the ultimate in vehicle protection. The Italian manufacturer also offers a lifetime product warranty, subject to terms and conditions, to encourage years of safe, stylish motoring. Laserline 0845 271 2890, www.laserlinespa.com

Digital Systems Not just a new security product here – but a new security brand and distributor, for the UK at least, courtesy of the newly formed Synergy Automotive Electronics. Headed up by technical guru Nick Oakland, Digital Systems has the ability to read and write to a number of different vehicle communication protocols, such as LIN-Bus, Renault Bus, BMW K Bus and Fiat Digital signal for CDL outputs – other products tend to be Can-based only. Synergy Automotive Electronics will supply bespoke installation sheets, helplines and web support, with training courses to follow. Synergy Automotive Electronics 01865 366434, info@synergy-automotive.com

MED

Viper

Another security product available through Armour Automotive is the MED 7450 Can-Bus Thatcham Category 2 to 1 system. It features a Can, Van, K-Bus, Code and Analogue interface, with auto setting and tamper-proof technology, as well as ultrasonic sensors. A PIN card containing a personal code for emergency release in case of difficulty is also supplied, and the whole system can be operated via the car’s original factory keyfob. The 7450 is compatible with all vehicle Can-Bus types so only one module needs to be stocked (rather than three from other manufacturers). Trade price to retailers starts at £75 per unit, with discounts available for orders of five or more. Armour Automotive 01420 487110, www.armourauto.com

Last year, Car Audio & Security (CAS) became the new UK distributor for Viper, and that means that the brand’s SmartStart technology will now be available exclusively through them. SmartStart allows the user to download an app to their iPhone or other smartphone, and with the correct equipment fitted to their car can lock or unlock the vehicle, start it or track it from anywhere in the world. CAS will also be organising a select dealer programme, with discounts available to those who choose to fit SelectSmart to their demo vehicles. Training days will be available too. Celebrity following Even champion boxer Carl Froch has a Vizualogic system fitted to his Range Rover, and hundreds of other customers driving premium brands such as Range Rover, Infiniti, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have Vizualogic products too. Professional boxer Carl Froch, the current IBF super-middleweight champion and former two-time WBC super-middleweight champion, had a Vizualogic A-1260 system with PerfectMatch leather headrests installed after doing his own research into finding the best products available. After recently having the system fitted, he is delighted with the results. “With my son on board, it’s important to offer him some entertainment in the car, as he can get bored easily,” he says. “With the Vizualogic system he can watch films, listen to music or play games, making any journey fly by. The cordless headphones included are a nice touch, and the 7 inch screen in the back of the front seat headrests provides a good clear picture for every source.” And Carl’s son enjoys bringing his friends along for the ride, to show them what the system can do. “If he has a friend in the back, they can watch the same DVD across both screens, or they can both watch something different. Alternatively, one can play one of the 54 games included, or plug in their own games console,” Carl adds. “I also believe it will help make the car worth more when I come to sell it, because of the top level quality of the Vizualogic system, particularly the brilliant leather colour and texture match of the headrests.”

I’m fully aware that I waffle on about media and the importance of promoting your business, but that’s essentially the field I’ve worked in all my career, so I feel vaguely qualified to pass some thoughts on that may help you. And I make no bones about dedicating this page to the big Facebook scandal, because I truly believe it could affect you. By the time you read this though it’s likely to be old news, yet the two sides of the argument may still not have reached you. Let’s start with the problem; companies were finding their brilliant Facebook pages with 10,000 followers suddenly weren’t having the same effect. While they once may have shared a picture of their latest subwoofer and had all 10,000 people see it on their news feed, now only around 5,000 were seeing it, sometimes much less (as an aside, if you don’t actually have a Facebook business page then you may not realise you can see the reach of how many people saw your post, which is a pretty useful tool). This change was all something to do with Facebook’s Edgerank algorithm apparently, where Facebook is purposely limiting the reach of posts by business pages. Ah, but the catch is, you can pay to ‘promote’ posts, and that helps you to get

Why would people log on to Facebook if 90% of what they see is companies trying to sell them stuff…

Contact Andy on millsymax@hotmail.com 26 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

the same kind of penetration as before. So, to summarise, in order to get the same as before you need to pay money. My initial response to this, and of many people who use or promote the idea of Facebook business pages, was one of disgust. But is it really all that bad? The rationale for these changes has been twofold. Firstly, it’s an attempt to try and keep Facebook a bit more true to its roots – a social media site for friends interacting with friends. There’s undoubtedly an acute awareness that people having their Facebook pages filled with pictures and news of products that they don’t really care about, just because they clicked ‘Like’ on a page two years ago, is going to be a bit of a turn-off. Why would people log on to Facebook if 90% of what they see is companies trying to sell them stuff… no matter how cleverly or coolly it’s done. The second reason is obviously to make some money out of the service, especially now that

Facebook has shareholders (which, for my money, is often the kiss of death for any real innovation). But surely this is fair enough because if any of us owned something that had so many people using it and so many businesses promoting themselves on it, surely we’d look at cashing in? Facebook has been free to business users for a long time and that’s been a blessing for many, so perhaps it’s only fair businesses have to pay now. By paying, it may also mean that companies won’t just splash any old drivel out there, they’ll think about what would actually be interesting/ amusing/effective and then put their money behind it. Ultimately that should increase the appeal of Facebook for everyone. I read one wedding photographer’s views on all of this and he actually tested the system; taking an album of pictures that only had 86 views from his 11,000+ followers when the changes first happened, he then reloaded that same album and promoted it for around £10 in total – this time it was viewed by over 8,000 people, similar to what he was getting before. When you compare that reach for that cost, it looks like great value compared to traditional advertising. The thing to remember is that Facebook isn’t blocking all of your followers from seeing your updates, with as many as half of them still seeing things as before by the organic spread of your post. Facebook can still be a great tool for your business, but you simply have to use it more wisely and you may have to spend a little bit of money to make impact with those posts that really matter. And let’s face it, not all of them do matter really, so having to think about what to promote and when for maximum effect is no bad thing. What these changes also highlight is that in the digital age, as we all know, things move and change at a rapid rate and you need to be prepared to roll with the punches. Sure, Facebook for businesses was better before on the face of it, because it didn’t cost anything, but now it’s probably better for users. If it’s better for users, then it’s better for businesses as the users will keep coming back and are still readily reachable if needed. Social media should be part of your marketing activities as much as magazine and newspaper advertising, open days or project cars. As such you should probably be prepared to pay for it as if there’s something online and useful for marketing your business, at some point there’s likely to be a cost attached. Even without paying to promote posts, Facebook is still an important tool and you certainly shouldn’t be turned away from it by the seemingly callous demand for money they’re now making.

PRODUCT FOCUS /// Rear seat entertainment ///

Rear view Most cars come without rear seat entertainment as standard – and it’s expensive as an option. Could that mean an opportunity for the aftermarket installer?

I

t may be a cliché, that rear seat entertainment, with screens, DVD and games consoles, is only fitted to keep the kids quiet on long journeys – but that could be just the reason for people to visit your shop. Some families may have opted for a 4x4 for the school run and the odd day out, but the fact is that manufacturers like BMW, Audio and Volvo charge a small fortune to include any form of rear seat entertainment from their options lists. Chances are that while people may end up getting a nice head unit or Bluetooth handsfree for the front of the car, the back will be skimped on – only for them to regret it later, and not really know what to do about it. There are two things to communicate here. One is that a rear seat entertainment system, consisting of headrest screens or flipdown monitors, is available through the aftermarket, and the other is that by coming to you people will have more options in terms of the system they go for, and it will cost them a lot less than what the vehicle manufacturer would charge. And most brands now supply straight-swap headrests, matching the trim colour to the rest of the interior, which makes the job of fitting everything even easier for you. Do you have headrest or flip-down monitors displayed anywhere in your shop? Or is it something you push often? Such a system requires multiple products to get the most out of it, and it could be a profitable area. There may not be a great deal to distinguish the products of different brands these days, as most tend to offer at least a 7 inch screen, and if it’s a complete headrest solution there will be a DVD player, headphones, a remote control and a games controller. But where they differ is in terms of the mounting and finish options, with many pushing their safety features. And while it’s all very well waiting for that family in need of entertainment to come through your door, think of all the minibus or chauffeur companies who may be looking for a solution for their entire fleets – there is only so much of the journey those magazines that end up in the seatbacks can cover. Dream up an attractive incentive, or make a deal on a complete system perhaps, and this could be an area that really takes off. 28 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

Alpine King of Alpine’s rear seat entertainment options is the PKG-2100P, with a flip-down 10.2 inch screen and front-loading DVD player. It has an FM modulator, remote control, an infra-red headphone set included, two Aux inputs and one output, and a built-in dome light. There are 7 inch (TME-M780, RRP £289) and 5.8 inch (TME-M680, £279) headrest screens available too, both with two Aux inputs and one output, but the 7 inch also has an infra-red transmitter for headphone usage, plus Visual EQ presets to automatically tweak the colour and brightness to the type of movie. RRP9 £16 Audiovox Audiovox is a brand that promises to merge styling, trim, software and electronics into a seamless finish and user interface. The SL7 Slim Line, for example, is a ‘Factory Match’ replacement headrest with a 7 inch screen built-in (8 inch available too), LED backlighting, top-loading DVD player, FM transmitter, USB connections and infra-red wireless headphones. There is also the SL Active Restraint series, for vehicles that require it, and even an entry-level product, the AVXMTGHR1D, with 7 inch screen, DVD, AV inputs and a choice of basic colours. Beat Beat is of the opinion that its screen-andDVD offerings should be portable, and the PBT7DVD happens to be just that, although there is a special mounting bracket provided, to ensure that securing to a headrest is a possibility. The player boasts a 7 inch screen with 270-degree swivel motion, USB and SD card sockets, 2.1 audio and video output, built-in speaker and rechargeable battery, with carry case, remote control and headphones. Another feature good for in-car use is the anti-shock function, so no skipping on bumpy roads. Connects2 0845 257 5588, www.connects2.com

C-KO The C-KO-HR-DVD750 came top in the Best Value Headrest category at the MEN Awards in November, and this is something the brand very much wants to shout about. According to C-KO, there are many competing products that do not live up to the expectations of installers. This is a universal product, with a colour match service offered for the leather trim, plus a range of poles to give a better fit. RRPC £TB Funtoro This brand is a bit more niche than some of the others featured here, but if you have a number of rear seats to take care of, with an install in a people carrier, minibus or coach, then it could be a useful option. Through 7 or 10 inch monitors, Funtoro systems can allow up to 54 passengers to watch TV or movies selected from a wide range, and follow the journey or listen to music. For 54 screens, installers would just need one server, nine extension hubs, and then six of the monitors connected to those hubs. Even advertising or surveys can be programmed in. There are also USB and SD card slots, two AV inputs and one output, two wireless infra-red headphone sets and a remote control. MEET THE DEALERS /// Safe & Sound ///

Playing safe Lee Glover reveals why his business, Safe & Sound, won the Best New Dealer category at the MEN Awards

You recently won the Best New Dealer award - what did that mean to you?

Is running a shop very different to running a purely mobile business?

I was very pleased to win an achievement like this. It shows the company is moving in the right direction. Our shop has only been open for a year and three months, although we’ve been mobile for the past eight years, and the idea of adding a showroom to the business was purely by chance. Originally we got it because it was going to be an extension for my wife’s hairdressers next door, but I found there was a support wall and we couldn’t knock through for that, so we ended up turning it into an extension for my installer business, and it’s done quite well.

It is. You need to plan ahead more. You need to carry more stock, and you have to keep an eye on what competitors are doing, and plan your pricing accordingly. And you have to keep up to date on the latest thing, as customers expect you to be knowledgeable about every product. But it’s good to have both, as they are quite different. In the shop we sell more audio and Bluetooth kits, and digital radio is starting to pick up, while for the mobile business it’s parking sensors, tow bars, and the diagnostics and fault finding that we do.

So you work next door to your wife? How is that?

If dealers don’t have a mobile arm then, you’d definitely recommend it?

Well, her shop is a lot warmer than ours [laughs]. Seriously though, we have picked up the odd bit of business too, when people pop in there and see us. But the business is still 100% mobile - myself and Steve Topsfield are on the road every day, while Ben Stromer looks after the shop. Our apprentice, Jake Caskie, works in the shop and on the road.

I would. It is difficult to maintain the entire business these days with just the shop. People call up, and they like it if you can come to them, and they can get on with what they need to while you work on their car.

32 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

So why do you think you won that award, and what is it you’re doing well? We won because we’ve developed a strong

customer and trade base, and we also have a good reputation with our suppliers. By being nominated, we found that word got around, and we were picking up work because of that.

Any brands you sell a lot of? We do well with the various Vestatec brands, such as Rockford Fosgate and Rosen. It will be interesting to see how digital radio takes off. It’s one of those things where it will either be really small or absolutely huge, with everyone from young people to used car dealers catching on.

What are your plans for 2013? We’re actually planning to open a bigger store, catering for more products and customers. Contact Safe & Sound in Benfleet, Essex (01268 773777), or visit www.safeandsoundmobile.co.uk

What’s it like?

This issue, Adam Rayner meets a tablet device with navigation, Bluetooth, TV and digital radio

I

am an old hippie. I get nostalgic for trips in VW splittie campervans that I never made, and while I have been on enough tour buses for my first ever published article to be called ‘Rock Bus’, I never did get to ride in one, nor have I ever done the Winnebago thing. But faced with a device like this from Snooper, which caters to drivers of such vehicles as well as normal road cars, I may be encouraged to think otherwise. It is a steroidally-mutated Portable Navigation Device (PND) that does everything else as well.

34 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

A bigger, sexier version of the other Snooper PNDs, with such features as digital radio, a proper TV for when you park, a really brilliant camera and speed trap database, and above all a really good navigator. But it can also tell you if your Winnie, wagon or caravan can get along any given route and show you the ones that will fit your rig… And it handles videos, music and photographs. The customer is sure to be impressed by what looks like a simple 7 inch tablet, first of all. Or they may actually know that there are ‘leisure’ market navigation systems that can have their length, width, height, axle weight and even, if they are a bendy, articulated (ie trailed) item, like a caravan, entered into them. But the Snooper has essentially the same brilliant HMI graphics that the brand has used for years, with a single fast postcode entry screen, plus other icons that make it intuitive, but it also has some magical campervan ones. There are also the official databases of campsite locations supplied directly by The Camping and Caravanning Club and The Caravan Club – including The Caravan Club Certificated campsites – all preloaded, so that you can search and navigate straight to them at the touch of a button. This includes campsite and motorhome stopover information supplied by ACSI, BordAtlas and Camperstop – a serious slice of data, including still photos to help the driver identify key landmarks.

The Aura speed alert database is also included, and it’ll play MP3 music, show videos and stills, works really well as a TV, and is also bloomin’ excellent as a digital radio sky-gripper. Out of the box, it tuned into a slew of stations from my garret overlooking Hertfordshire. It also works as a Bluetooth handsfree kit too, if you have a compatible phone.

How well does it work? I tried to insist that the only real way to test this device was to send me and mine to Europe for five days in a 50ft Winnebago, with all petrol and expenses paid for, but I was sadly declined. I did give it a try in the UK, thought, and found the TV tuner totally idiotproof, and in moments I was watching Strictly – only to realise it was Saturday night and I ought not be working. The digital radio was clear and clean, and the whole graphical interface was fit for use by a pensioner who wasn’t completely ossified. Bless, if you are safe to drive, you will work this out. But it is big enough to work as a TV, and is terrific value as well. As said, I really need to get out there with it, but the navigation quality from Navteq maps I utterly can vouch for, and it shames some fullon installed type technology. So you can sell it knowing it is a top end, class leader.

Why stock it? Leave it on display in a glass cabinet, or better yet, have three. Run one showing a digital radio station you can’t get on FM, one showing a video of your store, and one with the TV running. It sends all its audio via FM radio modulation into whatever head unit is in the vehicle, as well as its own startlingly potent Neodymium magnet drivers hidden away in the chassis, so may help sell itself. Buyers will probably include trailer users or big land-yacht owners, like the Phutney-Creech Land Yacht (Google it!) – or caravanners and motorhome owners. But if you have any ‘leisure market’ customers, you would be frankly daft not to offer this. It’s the best convergent product I have ever seen. Well done Snooper, you cunning rascals! Business focus /// Customer reviews ///

Turn a bad review good Customer reviews can make or break your business, so how do you turn a bad one into a positive?

A

happy customer is a wonderful thing. A happy customer who wants to tell others about what a good experience they’ve had is even better. Fortunately there are numerous outlets for them to do that, from business review sites like Yell or Thompson Local to social media sites and enthusiast forums. As we’ve touched on before, one of the best bits of marketing your business can have is ‘word of mouth’, which is essentially what good online reviews are. In fact, people are so used to seeing five star customer ratings now, from the book they buy on Amazon to the hotel they book through Easyjet, that it’s become part of the modern day shopping routine. For items or services you’re unsure about, these customer reviews, whether a star rating or forum post, can be the best guide to choosing the company you do business with. As such, considering mobile electronics is likely to confuse many people, you should be getting your business onto review sites and doing all you can to give incentives to satisfied customers to add positive reviews or glowing forum posts. If you’ve got five stars and the next company on a listing hasn’t, or if customers keep leaving great feedback on forums or social media, it’s not exactly going to do you any harm, is it? Obviously some business owners will add positive reviews themselves, but the percentage is generally believed to be quite low, so for consumers it’s a reasonably trustworthy method of checking companies. But what happens when a dissatisfied customer gives a damming review? And, let’s face it, an unhappy customer is unfortunately more likely to go to the effort of letting their views be known than a happy one. This is when public relations in its most raw form is needed and there are a few key rules. Stay calm – when you’ve done your best and somebody moans about it, perhaps totally unreasonably, it can feel like a very personal 36 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

attack. Don’t get angry though as a passionate heat-of-the-moment reply could do more bad than good. Keep your cool and consider all options for a response. Decide whether to respond – it’s your choice whether you respond or not and you may decide the review will have little impact on your business. A bad online review doesn’t go away, but the number of people who see it may not be large. (One alternative suggestion is to try and bury it with positive reviews, so that when people search online for your company, that one review disappears from the first few pages of the results). Do your research – before you do respond, you need to arm yourself with the facts. Find out from staff or records everything you can about the situation the customer is complaining about. Only by going in fully prepared can you realistically reach a good conclusion. Do you owe an apology – it may be the case that you are to blame for their dissatisfaction in this case. If so, make a sincere and honest apology and an offer to put it right. It’s not just this customer – even if the bad review is totally unfounded, the way you respond to it can have a positive review on the potentially large number of possible customers that will look at it. As such you need to still treat the complaint with respect. Show the customer you care about the feedback, make assurances that you’re doing everything you can to make sure the mistake doesn’t happen again and put things into perspective; “We’ve installed over 1,000 handsfree phone kits and although we pride ourselves on the quality of our ability and service, and are happy to have so many satisfied customers, unfortunately with such a busy workshop sometimes small errors can happen.” Be empathetic – in all dealings try to put yourself in the customer’s shoes. If you think their review is unfair because you were short staffed, or you’d had a flood in the workshop, then, however unfortunate, it’s not really their concern. If you’d

booked a restaurant for a family celebration only to turn up and find there’s hardly anything on the menu because of failed deliveries of ingredients you’re hardly going to be impressed are you? Don’t threaten – even if your efforts to appease the situation are spurned, take the moral high ground. So long as you believe you’ve done all reasonable things within your power to resolve the problem, it may be time to walk away. No matter how frustrating, don’t threaten or behave unreasonably as that will exaggerate any negative opinion people may have. Take it offline – if you think it’s a more complicated issue, then show how seriously you take their opinion and offer to talk offline to resolve it. You may find the personal touch works better and they may retract their review as a result of your efforts. Ultimately this is all very similar to the customer service you’ve been giving for years, but with the extra dimension of being there for all to see, rather than a one-on-one conversation in your shop. That certainly adds an extra element of pressure into how you respond. But if you get it right, that customer may be so impressed by how you handled the situation and made them feel valued, that you may just have a customer for life. And if others see you behaving in that way, they could well become customers too. It’s also worth doing some searching online for examples of how other businesses have dealt with bad reviews too, as every situation differs. Sometimes a totally different use of a bad review can work – one sandwich shop was panned by an online reviewer, who claimed their meatball sandwich was the worst one in the world. There wouldn’t be a simple or reasonable way to counter such hyperbole… so they simply put a sign outside the shop suggesting customers come in and try ‘what one online reviewer called the worst meatball sandwich in the world’. Surely that would be tempting!

INTERVIEW /// Charlotte Body ///

Body language

MEN publisher Charlotte Body reflects on the changing face of the industry, and looks ahead to what could be a very promising 2013

In 2012, Mobile Electronics News magazine reached an important milestone – 10 years serving the industry. And that hasn’t just meant a monthly publication, as there is the MEN Expo trade show every March, and the ICE Awards each autumn. It was publisher Charlotte Body who started the magazine, after many years working in the publishing industry, and she has seen how the mobile electronics trade has evolved – there has been new technology, changing trends, and also the challenges faced by the economic climate. Charlotte has worked with all of the leading companies in that time, and is ideally placed to comment on how business has fared in the last year, and what 2013 might have in store.

How has 2012 been for the industry, in your opinion? We have had a fantastic year, surprisingly up on the one before.

What changes in the market have you seen? The most important change is digital radio, and the switchover dates that will be set. I found the recent DRUK (Digital Radio UK) conference last November very inspirational. I believe we still have a market, but as is the case with so many others, we have to diversify and look for different market shares.

What are the growth areas now, and what should dealers be concentrating on? The growth areas are DAB – whoops, I mean digital radio, as I think everyone should be calling it that to make it clearer what it is. I also think that installers should be careful not to miss the boat and make sure that they are marketing themselves as digital radio specialists now to pick up the early adapters... Over the years I have seen that as an industry we are not always quick to pick up on the opportunities presented to us. I am sure that specialists are always needed in this market.

How do you think things might develop in 2013? I think it will be another tough year, and the economy needs to get stronger for consumers’ confidence. We live in a world 38 www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu

of sales and discounts all year rather than seasonal selling, and I am not sure how we recover from this in retail.

The boy racer market seems to have dropped off now – does that mean lower sales of audio products, or is it a different kind of customer these days? I think events like Gadget Show Live at the NEC are very important to create consumer awareness of the fantastic products that we do. I love seeing people’s reaction to great installs and amazing sound… it is better seeing that reaction than the many shows I have been to where the only thing the boy racer market responds to is a pair off breasts or a pert bottom.

What are the current challenges faced by the industry? Growth and development, and to make sure that as an industry we are united in not under-selling everything, as it’s not only about shifting a box. We need the manufacturers to stick to clear profit margins for the good of the industry.

What advice would you give dealers trying to navigate a tough economic climate? Market yourselves. Business is out there, but you have to be proactive. I always get frustrated when people say they are quiet. I say get on the phone and find new business.

You’ve been in the industry a long TIME – how has it changed? The industry has changed so much since I first started as a young lady with a big mouth and hunger for success. My first Max Power show was an eye opener, and I have always appreciated really good sound. My love for a bass line is probably what keeps me passionate about the market. I prefer dealing with my clients on MEN than any other market I work in, and I feel fortunate to have been around such characters. I believe that a lot of my success has come from this industry and for this I am thankful for.

Are you looking forward to this year’s MEN Expo? Very much so, and I hope that all of our readers make the effort to attend, as the manufacturers and suppliers spend a lot of time, money and effort for their benefit, and I am a little disappointed when I hear that people can’t make it because they are busy. It would be a shame not to have an industry exhibition, but if people don’t attend we will not be able to continue! So support your industry, comes along and see your suppliers, and have a beer and a curry on us... Most importantly, see lots of new products and take advantage of the seminars and digital radio workshop. Ask not what your industry can do for you, but what you can do for your industry. See you there. To get your free ticket for MEN Expo 2013 on March 5th-6th register at www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu, or call the ticket hotline on 01268 754897.

NEWS /// PRODUCT /// Celsus

Judgement day The new Terminator range from MTX has launched, offering great value and reliability There are probably a hundred different Arnie jokes we could use to kick off this news item (we even considered writing it so that it would be read with an Austrian accent), but instead we’ll just concentrate on the facts. The Terminator range from MTX consists of speakers, subs, enclosures, bass tubes and amplifiers, and UK distributor Celsus reports and impressive response from dealers already, thanks to the value and reliability on offer. There are mono, two-channel and four-channel amps to choose from, with the two-channel for example offering 2 x 100W, an active crossover, high level inputs and mono capability for £89. The four-channel is flexible too, with prices at £129. The speaker range is just as impressive, featuring 4, 5.25 and 6.5 inch coaxials, up to three-way 6x9s rated at 320W and costing £54. There is lots of choice when it comes to bass too, with 12 inch subs at £59, a version mounted in a ready made vented enclosure for £109, or an 8 inch powered bass tube rated at 340W maximum and costing £119. The speakers are identifiable by their shiny red cones, while the amplifiers all have aluminium heatsinks with red detailing. Call to find out more. Celsus 01202 664390, www.celsusice.co.uk

C-KO has just launched intelligent parking sensors designed specifically for Toyota models (RS-4-18-R-I-COL), with auto sensing built in. So not only are the 18 mm sensors colour-matched to the manufacturer’s various paint jobs, but auto sensing means that if a car is fitted with a bike rack or tow bar, the kit makes allowances automatically, so no need to change the settings on the ECU box. While this does make the kit more expensive, it means less hassle in the long run – especially for the installer. Like all C-KO parking sensor kits, these have audible alert and a lifetime warranty. TomTom

TomTom updates Both the Apple and smartphone apps from TomTom have just been updated. The Apple navigation app is now designed to take full advantage of the larger iPhone 5 screen, so that drivers can see more of the map and extended search results, and can work with or without a signal by storing the map info. The Android version, meanwhile, has been optimised for use with the most popular handsets, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X and Google Nexus 4, with improved download manager,

updated Driving View, more flexible postcode entry, and the ability to store maps on SD cards to save phone memory. The Apple app is £39, for Android it’s £30. www.tomtom.com

Armour Auto

Focal integrates

High-end speaker brand Focal has just released the first two dedicated kits from the Integration range in the UK, through distributors Armour Automotive. As you may have guessed, the Integration range is designed for ease of fitment and the dedicated kits are fully tailored to specific vehicles; with the IFVWGOLF6 and IFP207 kits catering for the VW Golf MkVI and Peugeot 207 respectively. Supplied in each kit are two-way components speakers, consisting of Polyglass woofers and tweeters in custom replacement cowlings, with all necessary

adaptors and fitting tools – in fact, Focal makes it so easy to perform a straight-swap of the car’s standard speakers, the brand claims, and proves through on-line real-time videos, full fitting for each set takes less than an hour. It promises to hold phones ranging in size from 104mm150mm, in landscape or portrait view, and can be adjusted as necessary. Tracker

Mesh nets over £4k

Tracker ended the year by reporting that its Mesh Network, launched in March, had helped in the recovery of £4,327,700-worth of stolen vehicles. Mesh takes car security to the next level, whereby cars already fitted with Tracker SVR units can detect stolen vehicles also fitted with Tracker, alerting local police. It closes the net on thieves, and can even detect cars in a garage, container or underground car park. “The Mesh Network empowers drivers by allowing their cars to be used as detection devices,” says Tracker managing director Stephen Doran. “We have already seen a significant increase in the number of vehicles police are tracking and returning to their owners, making this a clear illustration of the value of the Mesh Network.” www.tracker.co.uk www.mobileelectronicsnews.eu 41

INSTALL GUIDE /// VW Golf ///

Fit the latest Pure digital radio Learn how to install the new Pure Highway 300Di in-car digital radio and audio adapter

L

ast month it was announced that in order to get closer to the in-car market and create a more integrated installation of its latest product, the Highway 300Di, digital radio experts Pure had appointed Nemesis GB as its automotive partner. Nemesis will work with retailers and car dealers to show how the system can be fitted to specific vehicles – and here show how to fit one to a VW Golf.

Supplied with the kit are a small display/ controller for dash mounting, a display holder with adhesive pad, the main control unit, an adjustable mounting bracket, plus a USB extension cable and Aux input cable. There is also a grounded film antenna, user manual and product registration card. Before you start, check the vehicle electrics and ancillaries, then again after, note any

security codes and disconnect the battery. Once the device is fitted, there is an installer settings menu to help with the initial set-up. This enables the Highway 300Di to be optimised for the type of DAB aerial used, an autoscan can be performed for available stations, FM can be activated or disabled, and software updates via a USB or a full system reset can be performed.

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

STEP 5

First task is to install the antenna – this is pretty much the same for all cars, whatever

Give the inside of the windscreen in the corner by the top of the A pillar a quick clean, using an alcohol wipe or similar, to remove any grease or road film. Then dry with a clean cloth. Now carefully route the antenna cable behind the roof lining, so that the elements at the windscreen end are facing downwards.

Position the elements a minimum of 10cm from the metal of the A pillar to avoid interference. Remove the adhesive backing, and secure the antenna base on the inside of the windscreen. A tip here is to use a credit card here to smooth the element onto the glass, so that there are no air bubbles under the film.

The other end of the cable needs to come out from under the lining by the top of the A pillar. Secure it into the first of the two clips fitted earlier, then remove the backing tape from the adhesive aluminium foil and stick over the top, ensuring it sits flat. Put the cable in the remaining clips, so it now runs the length of the A pillar.

The cable needs to run through the hole at the A pillar base and behind the dash, where it will eventually connect to the main control unit. For now though, attach the black Fakra connector on the end, and when you are happy replace the pillar trim.

STEP 6

STEP 7

STEP 8

STEP 9

STEP 10

For the remaining kit, the left dashboard end cap, head unit and surround trim, heater/ climate surround trim and ashtray/storage box assembly, all need to come out. In the Golf, a good location for the control unit is at the back of the hole left by the head unit – secured with doubledsided tape – but all cars are different. Look for a place up front where it can sit flat.

Look for a hole in the top right corner of the glovebox and run the USB cable, leaving about 30cm free for easy access. Connect the other end to the control box. The antenna cable fitted to the A pillar earlier also needs to come through behind the dash and plugged into the unit. Tape the cable to a draw wire and pull through the gaps or hole to make the job easier.

Connect both the quad-lock power cable and FM adaptor cable in-line between the vehicle’s wiring harness and the head unit. Now route the power in, FM aerial in and aerial out cables through the back of the head unit aperture, so they exit the dash inside the heater/climate aperture. Connect all three cables to the DAB control unit.

Route the blue (+15) wire on the quad-lock power cable through the back of the head unit aperture, so it exits the dash inside the centre console aperture next to the 12V power socket. Connect it to the black/red wire here using a Duraseal connector – stripping away the insulation of the wires, then placing a connector over the top, crimping it and using hot air to seal. Connect to fuse No 42 (20A) in the right dashboard fusebox.

Connect the cable for the display to the control unit, then refit the head unit with 30-50mm of cable hanging from the left-hand bottom corner. Fit the supplied metal bracket for the display here with the adhesive pad, and refit any other trim. Reconnect the battery and perform a full electrical system check, before finally turning on and using the system.

make or model. Remove the trim of the near-side A pillar, and then fit the self-adhesive cable clips provided along its length.
