THE BOSWELLS SCHOOL A Specialist Performing Arts School and College

Welcome from the Headteacher The Boswells School is a tolerant and caring community where each child can feel valued and which supports and challenges every child to be the very best they can be. We aim for everyone in our school to be happy, to feel that they are an important part of a community to which they can give and from which they can receive. Lessons are engaging and challenging so that each student is supported to do well and progress, and develop confidence and self-esteem. The latest computer, tablet and wi-fi technology is available to enhance learning opportunities so that traditional resources are harnessed to the power and accessibility of the internet. Thank you for your interest in our school. We are very proud of our students and what they achieve, both in lessons and in the many extra-curricular activities that we run. I hope that this brochure gives you a sense of the values and passion for young people and learning that drive the school forward. With best wishes

D J Crowe

Teaching and Learning Effective teaching and learning is fundamental to the success of our students and students make most progress when it is inclusive and enjoyable. We use a range of strategies and resources to promote effective learning and academic achievement, increase student knowledge and enhance the learning experience. Whatever strengths a student brings to their course, a successful outcome is supported by high quality teaching from skilled and caring staff.

Curriculum

“History is one of my favourite subjects, as instead of being given endless dates to remember, and timelines to fill in, we learn about funny, interesting subjects that actually affect our lives today.”

The Boswells School provides a broad and balanced curriculum that aims to meet the needs of every individual student, enabling all students make progress in their learning and achieve their full educational potential.

“I enjoy Science because doing experiments is much better than sitting writing out of a book!” 4

“ I’ve enjoyed being a college buddy and feel it has been rewarding to work with younger students. It has also helped inform my career choice of being a primary school teacher.” - Katie Sparrowhawk

Care and Support Each student is placed within a tutor group and year group led by a Head of Year. Tutors stay with their tutor groups as they progress through the school, getting to know each student as an individual. Extra support is provided by Pastoral Managers and Pastoral Support Assistants. We aim to build strong links between parents, students and staff in order to get the best for your child.

“I feel the younger students benefit from the ‘Buddy’ system as they can sometimes relate to us better than teachers and can learn from our school experience.” - Will Taylor 5

Extra-curricular Activities In addition to an outstanding provision in Performing Arts and Physical Education students can choose from a wide variety of activities which complement or extend learning, or provide something entirely different. What would you choose? • Volleyball. In 2013 our teams won 3 national titles. • Dance clubs for boys and girls of all ages • Drama Club and theatrical productions • Stage Crew, for those who like to work with stage sound and lighting. • Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme • Art Club • Photography and Photoshop Club • Life Drawing • Music ensembles and choirs • Rock School • Science Club • Film Club • Cheerleading
