Dr. Simon Oh, a distinguished figure in modern dentistry, has carved a remarkable path that blends clinical excellence with a profound commitment to global humanitarian efforts. From his roots in Maryland to leading a thriving network of dental implant centers, Dr. Oh’s journey is characterized by a dedication to innovation, patient care, and a vision for making advanced dental procedures accessible and reliable for all.

FROM MARYLAND ROOTS TO DENTAL LEADERSHIP: A PURPOSE-DRIVEN PATH

Dr. Oh’s upbringing in North Potomac, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., laid the foundation for his future in healthcare. His parents, immigrants and survivors of the Korean War, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire to make a meaningful contribution. His mother worked as an ESL teacher, and his father worked for NASA, both of whom encouraged his pursuit of the sciences. Dr. Oh’s natural aptitude for working with his hands and a desire to help people steered him toward dentistry.

“I always had a passion for helping people in any way I could. Early on, I realized I had excellent dexterity, which led me to pursue working with my hands. I found that surgical dentistry would be the best way to use those skills to help others,” he

shared, highlighting his early inclination towards the surgical aspects of the field.

His positive childhood experiences with dentists further solidified his career aspirations.

A proud alumnus of the University of Maryland, Dr. Oh continued his education at dental school in Baltimore. His exceptional academic performance resulted in him graduating near the top of his class and achieving the highest scores his school had seen on his board exams in many years. He then furthered his training in oral and maxillofacial surgery for a few years. He ultimately decided to focus solely on oral surgery, recognizing that it aligned more directly with his passion and career goals. The rigorous training provided him with extensive experience in complex reconstructive procedures, a foundation that would prove invaluable in his later specialization.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT: BUILDING SMART ARCH DENTAL IMPLANT CENTERS

After furthering his training, Dr. Oh’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to a significant role as Chief Clinical Officer for a growing dental service organization, where he played a key

part in its expansion from eight to approximately one hundred clinics over eight years. However, his true passion lay in the transformative power of full-mouth dental implants.

“Along the way, I started to tire of dentistry, the day-to-day work becoming monotonous. Then I discovered full-mouth implant procedures and dove headfirst into that world. I saw how deeply I could change someone’s life in a short time when performing these procedures,” Dr. Oh explained.

This realization ignited a new chapter in his career, leading him to establish Smart Arch Dental Implant Centers.

Under his leadership, Smart Arch has grown to nine clinics, primarily serving the East Coast. Dr. Oh’s mission extends beyond just providing implant surgery; he aims to offer highquality, full-mouth rehabilitation at a fair price point.

“Some of our competitors charge $50,000 to $60,000 to do full-mouth implants, yet their technology is lacking. We can perform these procedures at a higher level and lower price by stacking all the required technology,” he stated.

By leveraging advanced technology and operating on a costplus model, Smart Arch strives to make this life-changing

procedure more accessible to a broader range of patients. They have typically been able to offer pricing that is about 30% lower than the industry average without compromising on the quality of care or materials.

A

GLOBAL MISSION: BRINGING SMILES TO UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Driven by a deep sense of compassion and a desire to extend his expertise to those in need, Dr. Oh has embarked on significant humanitarian work in Central America. His involvement began approximately five years ago when he connected with a leading university in the region.

“I connected with one of the top universities in Guatemala and told them I wanted to help by offering my expertise and services. At first, my now partner, Dr. Eldad Drori, and I went there without a team,” he recounted.

This trip signified the first time specialized implants were placed in Central American history by Dr Oh.

This initial solo effort has since evolved into a large-scale mission, with Dr. Oh leading teams of around eighty dentists

and surgeons to Guatemala twice a year.

These dedicated professionals run a temporary hospital within the university’s facilities, performing a high volume of full-mouth implant surgeries for individuals who have often been toothless for decades due to a lack of access to such advanced care. The impact is profound and immediate.

“We’re typically able to deliver their teeth the same day or the next day. The teams that accompany us are able to experience firsthand the instant pain relief these patients receive. The results are so impactful,” Dr. Oh said, expressing his satisfaction with their work in Central America.

To date, his organization has provided an estimated $6 million worth of dental work in Guatemala alone, significantly improving the lives and well-being of countless individuals. Their efforts also extend to addressing complex cases such as tumor resections and cleft lip and palate reconstructions, often for children with severe facial deformities.

Dr. Oh’s commitment has inspired many of his peers to join these missions, creating a powerful collective impact. His vision for global outreach is expanding, with plans to extend similar efforts to Egypt, Brazil, and Southeast Asia,

recognizing the widespread need for advanced dental care in underserved populations.

RAISING THE BAR: EDUCATION AND ADDRESSING INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

Beyond his clinical practice and humanitarian work, Dr. Oh is deeply committed to raising the standards within the field of dental implants. He has become a sought-after speaker and educator, having trained approximately 200 other dentists on the intricacies of full-mouth implant procedures. Dr. Oh noted that the growing popularity of full mouth implants— especially on social media—has brought more attention to the procedure, along with a rise in providers offering it.

“Patients are seeing these dramatic before-and-after photos online, and naturally, interest has skyrocketed,” he explained. “But because of that demand, we’re also seeing some dentists begin offering full mouth implants before they’ve had the chance to build the necessary experience or training. That can, unfortunately, lead to inconsistent outcomes.”

In response, he has positioned himself as a specialist in correcting complex and failed implant cases, receiving

referrals from across the United States.

“I get referrals from all over the country. We have handled cases from California to Mississippi, as well as Maine and many places in between. I’ll be working on a new case for somebody in Maine next month,” he noted, highlighting the national scope of his expertise in remedial procedures.

To further his mission of improving standards, Dr. Oh is launching a significant educational platform in collaboration

with other leading experts in the field. Their goal is to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, ensuring that more dentists are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver successful and long-lasting results for their patients.

EMBRACING INNOVATION: THE FUTURE OF DENTAL TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Oh is also keenly aware of the transformative potential of

technology in the field of dentistry. With his entrepreneurial drive, he co-founded Smart Mouth Technologies, an engineering-driven company with AI focused on revolutionizing the full-mouth implant segment.

“I think AI is going to play a big role in dentistry in the next five years, if not sooner,” he predicted.

Recognizing that the prosthetic side of full-mouth implants has been relatively unregulated, Dr. Oh and his partners,

including a prosthodontist, physicist, and mathematician named Dr. Sven Bone, are developing innovative solutions. These include highly engineered prosthetic screws, computational models to predict fracture risk, as well as exploring the use of AI for advanced implant planning. Dr. Oh believes such technological advancements will lead to more predictable, efficient, and ultimately better patient outcomes.

A RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN PATIENT CARE

Dr. Oh’s commitment to raising the bar isn’t just about technical proficiency; it’s deeply rooted in a desire to provide the best possible outcomes for his patients. He understands that for many, full-mouth implants are a lifealtering investment, and his approach reflects this profound responsibility.

“I enjoy helping other doctors who help people, which is why I continue educating and speaking around the world,” he shared, highlighting his passion for elevating the entire field. This dedication is evident in his rigorous diagnostic processes, meticulous surgical techniques, and the high-quality materials utilized at Smart Arch centers. He often emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each individual’s unique needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. For Dr. Oh, every successful implant procedure isn’t just a technical achievement; it’s a testament to restored confidence, improved health, and a significantly enhanced quality of life for his patients.

This patient-centric philosophy extends beyond the operating room. Dr. Oh, who still “wears all the hats” as founder, chief dental officer, and lead surgeon for the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Smart Arch locations, ensures thorough post-operative care and support, ensuring patients are comfortable and wellinformed throughout their recovery journey. When asked about his speaking engagements, Dr. Oh notes that he often speaks on “the cutting-edge technology” and “the extreme cases,” which have become a specialty. This expertise in complex remedial procedures further solidifies Smart Arch’s

reputation as a leader in full-mouth implant dentistry, drawing patients seeking this procedure with a lasting solution delivered with expertise and empathy.

BEYOND THE CLINIC: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LIFE AND LEADERSHIP

While Dr. Oh’s professional life is deeply intertwined with dentistry and global health, he also embraces a rich personal life that informs his grounded approach to leadership. He enjoys traveling, golfing, and playing with his kids. He was even a professional guitar player in the past, though he admits he hasn’t picked it up much since his children were born. Gone are the days when everyone had to work a 9-5. Since 2020 especially, more and more people have been working from home and creating a schedule tailored to them. Come to find out, the 9-5 is best suited for men. Let’s explore why.

MEN VS. WOMEN’S CYCLES

EVERYONE’S CYCLES

We all have daily cycles. That’s our circadian rhythm, which determines when we wake up and go to bed.¹ When you have a system or a routine, your body will naturally want to get up and sleep at the same time each day.

If you think about it, we should all be suitable for a 9 to 5 workday, right? After all, we (in theory) are ready to conquer our day in the morning when we get up. Over the day, we progressively lose steam, and by the time 5 o’clock rolls around, we’re ready to be done. We have just enough time for dinner and downtime before bed.

However, men and women do feel differently each day based on their hormones.

MEN’S CYCLES

In addition to a normal circadian rhythm, men also experience a diurnal rhythm of testosterone.2 That means they experience the same thing every day with their hormones. When testosterone levels are normal, testosterone is at its highest in the morning and decreases over the day.³ As men sleep, testosterone rises, so it’s at its peak again the next day.

In other words, they’re ready to seize the day in the morning and feel ready to clock out by the end of the day. And the same thing repeats every single day.

WOMEN’S CYCLES

Hypothetically, women should feel the same way based on their circadian rhythm. However, any woman knows she doesn’t feel the same each day, and it’s not just in her head. That’s because a woman’s cycle works on roughly a 28day pattern. A woman’s key hormones, progesterone and estrogen, dramatically shift over this time. The main events in a woman’s cycle are ovulation and menstruation, but the body’s hormones are still working in between these points.⁴

All that to say, a woman will feel energized and have more mental clarity to complete tasks at specific points during the month. But at other times, she’ll feel grateful if she just makes it out of bed.

STRESS AFFECTS WOMEN DIFFERENTLY THAN MEN

Though stress is disadvantageous for both men and women, adding insult to injury, stress can hurt women more than men when it comes to fertility.⁵ When chronically stressed, our body enters a fight-or-flight mode, halting essential functions and causing gut imbalances. Stress causes our cortisol to spike, which, again, isn’t good for anyone's health overall. However, while men have cortisol, their testosterone doesn’t come from it. In other words, they won’t experience fertility problems from stress quite like women.

Women, on the other hand, primarily use the hormones progesterone and cortisol to conceive children. Cortisol is not bad, but when stress causes it to swell, everything else is imbalanced, making it difficult for women to have children. That likely explains why 1 out of 5 women experience infertility during the time they should be most fertile. Even if a woman doesn’t intend to have children, she’ll still be hurt by high cortisol with depression, anxiety, and mood swings, among other things.

WHAT WOMEN CAN DO

TRACK YOUR CYCLE

The good news is that women can track their cycles to understand what’s going on with their hormones. Even if they’re not planning to have kids right now, knowing what’s going on to prepare is helpful. This app called 28 is a great resource to track your cycle.⁶ If you don’t have a cycle, you can establish a monthly routine to help regulate it—which can help bring it back! The same app uses the moon as a monthly schedule if you so choose.

EAT AND EXERCISE WITH YOUR CYCLE

Once you know your cycle, you can eat and exercise along with it.⁷ As you might’ve guessed, there are times in the month when more intense exercise would be beneficial. At other points, though, it’s best to take a step back and relax. You can also eat foods that help balance your hormones. Getting in touch with your cycle can help regulate your hormones and make it easier to function.

MANAGE STRESS

You must do what you can to alleviate stress. If possible, take a step back from certain responsibilities in order to not overwhelm yourself. Don’t be hard on yourself when you’re at that time of the month. You can also trick your body into calming itself by activating the vagus nerve.⁸

CONCLUSION

Though atypical job trends are rising, that doesn’t mean we can completely abandon the 9-5. But if women track their cycles, they can learn how to work with their hormones to make the most of every day.
