How to Become a Chartered Accountant in India The path to become a chartered accountant is not easy. It needs patience, dedication, commitment and hard work. It is believed that the course is as difficult as BE, IAS and IPS. If you seriously want to know how difficult it is, those who have qualified the course successfully tell you the fact. The ICAI is responsible to conduct CA exam in India.

It is one of the oldest institutions in the country which has given India more than two lakh CAs so far. Earlier, the course was divided into 3 levels including Professional Exam- I, PE II and the final. Now, new changes have been made. It is difficult to tell that these changes have made the program whether easy. CPT and Direct Entry are two ways to choose the career path. You are totally free to choose

any of them. Let's understand these two routes and their challenges to become a well-qualified CA in India.

CPT (Common Proficiency Test) TopCAfirms The CPT comprises various steps than the Direct Entry Route. If you are determined to choose CA as your career, CPT will be an ideal route to go with.  Right after your 10th, register yourself with CPT course.  As you complete the specified period (60 days) from the date of registration and have appeared for 12th, you can appear for the CPT exam which is organized twice a year.  Once you clear the CPT, proceed to the next level which is Integrated Professional Competence (IPC). You are free to enroll in both or 1 Group.  Along with this, you will have to pursue 35 hours and 100 hours Information Technology Training (ITT) before registering for PT.  Note: The same process is followed for the candidates who have qualified ICSI and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.  After completion of 8 months course, you are eligible to appear for IPC exam. It is conducted twice a year.  After that PT training for 3 years can be joined, but you will have to qualify Group I or both Groups. In case, you have qualified the only Group I, you need to qualify the Group II during the Practical Training period.

 The first year of PT needs you to complete the First General Management and Communication Skills (GMCS) course which is for 15 days.  The other GMCS course is required to complete after 18 months of the PT.  During the PT period, you will have to complete Advanced Information Technology Training.  After successfully completing the IPC exam, you can proceed with registration for CA final course.

CA Final exam is conducted twice a year. You can participate in the exam in the final year of the PT or after completion of the PT.

Direct Entry Route -CA  In this, graduates from Commerce with 55% or graduates with another stream with 60% can enroll with ICAI for IPC course for both groups.  The PT format of the Direct Entry is the same as the CPT has.  After that, they can appear for IPC exam. You can, in fact, eligible for the IPC after 9 months of PC.  Once you clear both groups of IPC exam, you can give the final exam in CA.  During the PT, you will have to complete the advanced IT training.

These are two ways to become chartered accountants in India. Now, it is totally depended on you which way you want to go.
