UPGRADES TO A MODERN RENOVATION BY TAYLOR RILEY COURTESY PHOTOS

Tucked back off an Anchorage road sits an eclectic home built in 1894, renovated to belong to its residents of the 21st Century. The 7,991-squarefoot Coldeway House is a designated Kentucky landmark and named on the National Register of Historic Houses.

Coldeway, located on East Osage Road, features a Queen Anne frame, shingle-style and weatherboard, constructed by William B. Wood for Mary Buckner Coldeway. A few years later, it was sold to Percival Moore, the developer of the Louisville, Anchorage and Pewee Valley Electric Railway (Interurban), which operated from 1902 to 1934. The home has an unusual side elevation with two curved, recessed balconies with ornate details. The large neo-colonial porch was added by the owner Creel Brown, a whiskey distiller, in 1912. The house was restored

in the 1980s by Creel’s granddaughter, Joann Brown Schuler. A 3,000-square-foot addition was added by its current owners in 2019. Currently, Coldeway sits on 7.85 acres and is surrounded by a four-board fence with a 2,400-square-foot barn. The entryway includes marble flooring, updated fixtures, dramatic trim detail and high ceilings, bringing in natural light from the rear windows and staircase. A drop zone is included by the side door off the porte cochère, a covered area off the outside of

The kitchen is equipped with Wolf and Subzero appliances including a gas cooktop, refrigerator column, two freezer drawers, double ovens, microwave, warming drawer, dishwasher and farm sink. Also featured in the room is an exposed brick wine storage wall and a hidden pantry with pull-out shelving. An additional powder room is adorned with leather-detailed wallpaper, modern fixtures and hardwood flooring. Also on the bottom floor is an office tucked behind built-in shelving and folding wood doors for privacy. Lastly, on the bottom floor, the primary suite can be closed off with sliding, stained glass doors from the original part of the home. The primary bedroom has vaulted ceilings with wood beam details, a fireplace plumbed for gas logs and hardwood flooring. The suite contains two walk-in closets with custom wood closet systems and a large island with drawers and plenty of hanging and shelf space. The primary bath holds a freestanding, polished chrome-finish tub, as well as a large tiled shower with frameless glass and dual entry. One can keep warm and

private with heated flooring and separate vanities and lavatories. The lower level addition includes a two-car tandem garage, additional laundry room, storage room, full bath and access to the rear patio. Up the stairs, a sitting room greets visitors with hardwood flooring, double closets and access to the second floor covered porch. Bedroom 1 has hardwood flooring, a decorative fireplace, built-in bench seating, a fully remodeled en suite bath and a dressing room with a walk-in closet and private laundry room. Upstairs bedrooms 2 and 3 have hardwood flooring, a decorative fireplace and a closet with wood shelving. The full guest bath was completely remodeled with a paneled glass shower door, tile flooring and custom cabinetry. Don't Don'tget getfooled fooledby byKentucky's Kentucky'scold coldsnaps... snaps...

Gardening is a delight… sometimes. There’s nothing worse than falling for Kentucky’s infamous spring bait-and-switch: the perfect day for planting presents itself only to be followed by a surprise cold snap that ruins all your hard work. Timing is crucial for would-be green thumbs. Setting your plants out at the correct time ensures a long growing or blooming season while still avoiding the dreaded wilt and burn of a tricky frost. Old timers say that you should wait to plant tender seedlings and delicate annuals until either after Derby day or Mother’s Day (with the latter being the safe bet). While that’s absolutely good advice, there is still much to be done in the garden before that magic date...

Early April ◊ Transplant large trees and shrubs ◊ Prune evergreens ◊ Plant fruit trees and shrubs ◊ If you fertilize your lawn, use a spring-type ◊ Rotate indoor plants

Mid-April ◊ Spread high nitrogen fertilizer around evergreens ◊ Plant summer flowering bulbs ◊ Plant annual seeds ◊ Plant root crops ◊ Plant peas, cauliflower, cabbage, beets, carrots, etc.

Late April/Early May ◊ Deadhead spring flowering bulbs ◊ Prune forsythia once it has finished flowering ◊ Divide perennials ◊ Fertilize roses ◊ Set aquatic plants ◊ Plant beans and corn

Once the Danger of Frost Has Passed (Second week or so of May) ◊ Transplant your seedlings! ◊ Plant summer flowering bulbs (Cannas must wait until now) ◊ Plant summer flowering perennials ◊ Plant hearty annuals ◊ Stake tall flowers ◊ Control slugs and snails ◊ Get weeding! ◊ Most summer vegetables can be planted now. Wait another week for tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers.

We will then create detailed designs and even 3D renderings to share how we can personalize your space and invite you to take a tour of our factory and showroom. A: We’ve noticed that people are moving from dressers and other clutter in their homes and going for ways to really make their rooms more spacious and airy with lounge chairs and coffee tables while maximizing organizational efficiencies of all kinds of rooms. Q: I would like to automate my home, but I’m wondering - is it affordable? A: It’s very affordable. Our systems start at about $600 and are scalable from there. It’s not just a smart system, but an intelligent platform. Controlling your home or business is all possible from one easy-to-use interface. Whether it is a touch screen, remote control, keypad, smartphone, or tablet, managing everything from lights, shades, thermostats, door locks, security, and surveillance, the sky is the limit. Since these systems are scalable, you can add new features and control as desired over time. Q: Can I combine the systems that I already have into what you offer? A: We offer two platforms - Clare and Control 4, depending on needs and budget. These systems integrate with virtually all “smart products” so that you can control everything easily. The challenge with most smart products you can easily purchase at a retailer is with inter-compatibility. Users end up with an app for their lights, another app for their door lock, and on and on. Our systems allow everything to be controlled through one app and offer added features and control that you simply can t find at a big bo store or thru a DYI solution.

T HE E XP E R T Steve Nelson, Ever-Seal Expert in Deck and Concrete Sealing 502-427-7041

everseal.com EVER-SEAL was founded by homeowners, just like you, that were frustrated with products in the stores that never seem to live up to their promises all in an effort to simply maintain your home. While better solutions were available to manufacturing and municipal vendors, these were not things that the average homeowner could afford. Ever-Seal painstakingly developed systems to provide these solutions on a smaller scale, at a reasonable cost that homeowners could actually afford so they could spend more time enjoying their home instead of just working on it.

Q; How long does Ever-Sealing work? A: In short, our proprietary cleaning system is able to clean thoroughly through the exterior wood or concrete. Then, our patented penetrating sealant becomes a permanent part of the wood or concrete providing lifelong protection. EverSealing of wood, concrete or masonry can last over half a century and is guaranteed for at least 25 years. Q; Is Ever-Seal expensive? A: While the materials and equipment needed for our service make the cost a bit higher than a typical power wash and topcoat initially, being a permanent solution will save our customers thousands year after year for decades to come. Q; What should I expect during my Free Estimate? A: We offer pressure-free guaranteed estimates. We’re not a fan of those pushy sales guys either. We will test and measure the project, show you how our system works, show you our rates and go over the quotes with you. Only sign up if it makes sense and fits your budget.

Mees Tile & Marble has the tools to keep your countertops looking like the day they were installed for the length of time you have them. Q: How expensive is it to heat my kitchen or bathroom floor? A: Many clients think that adding a heating system to their home s flooring costs an arm and a leg. This isn’t always the case. Sure, the size of the space determines ho much material you ould need to heat your floor, and there will be an investment on the front end with material and a thermostat, but the actual cost of heating the floor is fairly ine pensive. t is a low voltage system, so the energy that it requires to operate is hardly noticeable.

We usually pull three recommendations for each item so as not to overwhelm them. We make sure all components are cohesive and complement the overall design scheme. Nine out of ten times, the client loves at least one of the three selections. From that point, we handle the purchasing and white glove delivery to their home!
