Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions.
Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. League
In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton Town Boardroom. The club then re-joined the Spartan League in 1967/68.
Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved on to other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined. A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and after just two seasons, the club re-joined the South Midlands League.
During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s.
In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history.
The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won, and with it a place in the Isthmian League.
1992/3 saw the Club’s success continue when they won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1970. The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point, but the Youth Team retained the County Cup.
1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup.
In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time.
1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy and the Buckingham Charity Cup.
Season 2003/04 Leighton won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. They were also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey Town respectively.
The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield.
The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League Western Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them. After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semi-finalists, Borehamwood.
The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they again finished as Runners Up. The Club were relocated to the Southern League Midland Division for 06 -07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup.
The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until mid-October. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Kei th Scott then left in December to join Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more. The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level.
The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties.
Season 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League.
The 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years. 2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place. 2015/2016 After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season.
2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and we eventually finished in 16th place.
2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA VASE. Gates improved and it was our best season for about 8 years,
2018/2019 Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned in the close season and Danny Nicholls was appointed as Manager but left in October due to work commitments. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson, who had previously won the Premier division title with London Colney as the new Management Team. They steadied the ship, and we finished in mid table.
2019/2020 Was a good season for the Club as we again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form as we slowly climbed up the table. The team were also awarded the Team of the Month twice.
2020/2021 Town for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant we could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season.
2021/2022 We eventually finished 4th in the table after a mid-season Management change and after the disappointment of losing our previous 4 Beds Senior Cup Finals we won the Trophy by beating Southern League Div 1 Champions, Bedford Town on penalties afte r the game had ended in a 2-2 draw.

Leverstock Green had won their last two league games but failed to follow that up on Easter Monday as they fell to a tame home defeat to Tring Athletic. Heavy rain throughout the night and the morning had left the pitch wet, and together with the increasing wind it didn’t make for the easiest conditions, but the Green side showed disappointingly little threat against their Dacorum neighbours.
Tring had the better chances of a quiet first half. In the 7th minute a mix-up at the back allowed Godlove Oppong to get round Austin Byfield, but his shot was deflected wide. Former Leverstock player Giuseppe Delgaudio hit a shot from distance in the 15th minute, but it was fielded by Byfield. Four minutes later Leo Farruch found space in the box, but his shot was cleared off the line.
Leverstock didn’t get a shot on target until the 24th minute but it was turned round the post by the keeper. In first half stoppage time Tring went close again when Oppong hit a rasping shot, but Byfield pulled off a great save to turn it around.
Leverstock’s best chance of the match came in the 60th minute. A corner was headed down to Chris Blunden, who connected with a shot on the turn, but it drifted just over the bar. The second half was generally proving just as quiet as the first until the 67th minute, when Delgaudio hit a low shot from the edge of the box out of Byfield’s reach into the corner of the net to put Tring 1-0 up.
A good move in the 70th minute set up Ryan Carruthers for a shot from the edge of the box, which went just over the bar. A minute later Tring were threatening at the other end again, and a cross from Jack Harvey found Farruch with a free header to double Tring’s lead.
The match somewhat petered out after that, with Tring happy to sit on their lead and Leverstock unable to create any kind of chance. Leverstock have work to do from their remaining three matches if they are to secure a top ten finish.

vs Shefford & Compton – Chris Blunden Presented by Lawrence vs London Colney – George Mitchell-Gears
A late free kick from Chris Blunden salvaged a point for Leverstock Green from their trip to Shefford Town & Campton on Saturday, although how the Green side did not come away with all three points from a frantic finish to the game is a mystery. Both sides will feel they could have won this very open game with plenty of chances at both ends. The first chance came with only 30 seconds on the clock. Hesitation inside the Green penalty area left Shefford’s Henry Snee with only Austin Byfield to beat, but the Leverstock keeper pulled off a great save. Leverstock’s first attack came in the 5th minute when Elgeniy Daalberg made a dazzling run down the right before cro ssing. Chris Blunden laid the ball back to George Mitchell-Gears, but his shot was deflected over the bar.
Four minutes later Ibrahim Nagheeb played a superb pass from his own half to put Mitchell-Gears in behind the last defender, but he delayed his shot a bit too long and was denied by keeper Reece Lewis. It was the home side that opened the scoring in the 13th minute, and there was an element of controversy about it as a Leverstock player looked to have been fouled on the halfway line as Shefford won the ball. A quick break forward saw Leverstock outnumbered at the back as Sam King was played in on the overlap to shoot past Byfield.
There were further chances for Leverstock. Lewis couldn’t hold onto a shot from Richard Ennin in the 22nd minute but recovered to grab the ball before Blunden could get there. Six minutes later a poor kick out from Lewis went straight to Nagheeb just outside the box, but he shot over the bar. On 31 minutes a backheel from Blunden put Ennin through, but his shot went across goal and wide. The home side were still threatening, and Byfield had to pull off another great save from Sam Day on 34 minutes to keep his side in the game.
More chances came and went in the closing minutes of the half, the last of them falling to Daalberg from a Mitchell-Gears pass, but again the shot was across goal and wide. Both sides had shots just off target in the opening minutes of the second half, and Shefford had another chance to double their lead on 50 minutes when Scott Metcalfe was through on goal, but Byfield got the faintest of touches to deflect his shot wide. On 69 minutes a throw from Adrian Pitfield got Blunden in behind the defence, but his shot from a narrow angle took a slight deflection off a defender which sent it wide.
Frustration was increasing in the Leverstock side as they still could not find the goal their excellent play had deserved, but five minutes from time they won a free kick in a central position 25 yards out. Blunden stepped up to take the kick and Lewis was left standing as the ball flew into the corner of the net for a long-overdue equaliser.
Leverstock now looked the most likely winners, but still their luck was out. On 87 minutes a shot from Rio Beach was pushed onto the post by Lewis. Blunden followed up for the rebound, but again it hit Lewis and the post.
A goalmouth scramble ensued from the resulting corner, but the ball would not go in. In the 90th minute Blunden got on the end of a cross from Ayomide Oke with a glancing header that went inches wide. There were threats at both ends during five minutes of stoppage time, and the biggest surprise was that there were only two goals in this game. The point leaves Leverstock holding on to 7th place with two league games to play.

Leverstock Green registered a big win in their penultimate league game of the season against alreadyrelegated London Colney. On a difficult pitch the Green side produced an excellent display of finishing in the second half as four different players found their way onto the scoresheet.
The scoring was opened in the 5th minute. Rio Beach sent over a cross from the left touchline which found George Mitchell-Gears, who took a touch and turned before rifling home a shot. There was a chance for a second three minutes later when a flick from Chris Blunden gave Mitchell-Gears a run at goal, but his shot went across goal and wide.
Blunden was unlucky with a shot in the 37th minute which keeper Norbert Adu did well to tip over the bar, and four minutes later Mitchell-Gears hit a shot from distance which went just over the angle. In the closing minutes of the half the home side went close when Daniel Parkinson just failed to connect with a cross at the far post, and in stoppage time at the other end Elgeniy Daalberg hit a shot into the side netting.
Leverstock were playing up the slope in the second half but remained in control of the game. In the 54th minute a corner from Dan Pett was not cleared, and in the ensuing scramble skipper Dan Weeks pounced on the loose ball to shoot home his first goal of the season.
Ethan Mooney and Ibrahim Nagheeb came off the bench, and Nagheeb took only four minutes to make an impact as his ball forward put Mitchell-Gears clear of the defence to send a neat lob over Adu for a 30 lead in the 70th minute.
Further substitutions saw Raheem Khan, Luke Durnin and Raheem Khan enter the fray. In the 81st minute Leverstock broke quickly from a London Colney corner. Daalberg won a challenge on the halfway line and threaded a pass through to Khan. His shot was parried away by Adu, but Nagheeb followed up to net the rebound to make it 4-0.
In the 88th minute Leverstock were caught on the break themselves as Samuel Ezenwaka was put clean through and finished well past Austin Byfield to pull a goal back. However, a minute later the four-goal cushion was restored as Calvin pounced on a loose ball in the box to shoot home a fifth goal from close range.
The three points moves Leverstock back up to 7th place, and they are all but assured of finishing no lower than 8th. They complete their season on Saturday at home to already-crowned champions Leighton Town.
