Aylesbury Vale Dynamos FC History
Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football
Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury.
in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly, Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987.
After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury.
1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, some 200 players being registered, this also including Stocklake Ladies. In 2000 four youth teams won league and cup honours, whilst the senior team went on to win the Aylesbury District Cup, the Field Shield and ADL Premier Division runners up.
At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Another award was gained for the match day programme in recognition of how much the club was developing. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006.
Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last 'level five' team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus.
Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming 'Double Winners' Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central.
Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league
The 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season
In 2018/19 after ten seasons in the Southern League the club was relegated back to the South Midlands League after a difficult period for the club.
Bedgrove Dynamos
Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12's Aylesbury & District League (ADL) but went on to win the 13's & 14's league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups.
Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad, and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona's trophy room.
At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8's through to under 18's.
At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14's, the Mayor's Cup at under 12's, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fair play awards for their respective leagues.
In the last 20 seasons, across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times.
In 2019 two became one when the sides almagated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football at the highest possible level.

KitAid Supporters Cup
KitAid is a Hertfordshire based charity which collects unwanted football kits to send out to teams in Africa and South America, who desperately need kit, boots and equipment. It was founded by Derrick Williams MBE in 1998 following a trip he made to Tanzania. While there he spotted a young boy wearing a ragged Liverpool FC shirt. Once home he showed the photo to friends and they all agreed to collect a box full of shirts and send it off to the village in Tanzania, as a "one off" thank you.
Fast forward 24 years to 2022 and since that first "one off" box, 913,000 items of kit have now been donated to football projects across the Developing World. KitAid are looking to reach 1 Million donated items in 2023, which will be their 25th Anniversary.
KitAid is run entirely on a voluntary basis, and it receives no grants, just donations from supporters across the UK.
Leverstock Green FC have been long term supporters of KitAid and have donated many kits. Aylesbury Vale Dynamos FC have also come on board this year. As both Clubs are due to play each other in the SSML on 12 November, we decided to make the game a little more interesting by introducing the inaugural KitAid Supporters Cup for the winners. We hope to extend this next season to include other supporting Clubs from the SSML, such as Tring Athletic FC and Harpenden Town FC.
Good luck to both teams today and we look forward to presenting the trophy at 5-00pm, and hope it isn't a draw!

For the sixth time in their last eight league matches Leverstock Green ended up with a share of the points, but this was another very good performance against a team in the top four of the division. Leverstock dominated for long periods of the game and were twice in front, but the division’s top scorer Taylor Rhiney scored two goals from two chances to level the scores.
With more injuries to their centre backs, Leverstock played with Bobby Armstrong and Scott McGleish at the centre of defence throughout, and McGleish’s performance earned him the man of the match award.
Leverstock started the game strongly and went close to taking the lead in the 7th minute when skipper Dan Pett hit the bar with a shot struck from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Pett had another shot which went over the bar, but in the 19th minute Pett finally hit the target with a low drive from 20 yards that found the bottom corner of the net to give his side a deserved lead.
However, that lead only lasted three minutes. Biggleswade won a free kick a few yards outside the left edge of the penalty area. It looked like a position from where the ball would be crossed in, but Rhiney had other ideas as he curled the ball over the wall and over the outstretched arm of Austin Byfield into the top corner of the net for a stunning equaliser.
Leverstock had dominated up to this point, but it was an even game for the remainder of the half, and the nearest that either side came to finding the net was in the 28th minute when the visitors broke away quickly and Raheem Jabbar got in behind the Green defence but struck the bar with his shot.
The second half was largely played in heavy rain, and just as Leverstock had started the first half well, they also made a great start to the second half. Two minutes in Chris Blunden got past a defender and sent over a cross, but Ibrahim Nagheeb couldn’t get his header on target. In the 50th minute Brian Testolin showed some good footwork to make a solo run into the box before setting up Blunden for a shot which keeper Tom Wyant could only parry. Ethan Mooney came in for the rebound but put it into the side netting. Two minutes later Mooney made up for his miss by threading a pass to put Blunden through against Wyant, and although the keeper got a boot onto Blunden’s shot, it wasn’t enough to stop it going into the net and putting Leverstock back in front at 2 1.
On the hour Leverstock were awarded a free kick about 30 yards from goal, and Blunden tried his luck with a shot which cleared the wall but was turned wide by a good save from Wyant. The keeper failed to hold onto the resulting corner but was not punished. Another corner three minutes later dropped for Armstrong on the edge of the box, but his shot went over the bar. As the game went into its last ten minutes a neat sidestep from Testolin opened up a shooting chance but his shot was gathered by Wyant.
With five minutes remaining Leverstock were still holding onto their lead and looking good value for it, but they were hit by an equaliser which came almost out of nothing. A ball was punted forward and found Rhiney on the edge of the box with his back to goal, and the striker wasted no time in turning and shooting low into the corner of the net to level the scores at 2 2.
Over the closing minutes both sides pushed forward in search of a winner, and either side could have won it. Leverstock’s best chance came when Sean Walsh won the ball off a defender to go through on goal, but Walsh chose to shoot from a narrow angle when pulling the ball back for Blunden might have been the better option, and it was deflected behind.

Leverstock Green FC History
Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th, 1896, in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers.
The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End.
The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing brick built clubhouse and changing rooms.
On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold.
The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League.
By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail, and the installation of training lights.
The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.
In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.
Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best ever run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19.
Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers.
County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road.
Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Woman’s League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013.
The under 18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.
The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed.
Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day.
Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid 19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under15 side this season.
Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation
Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.
At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs.
This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.
The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria
12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG.
It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
