BLOG POST Promoting Diversity & Inclusion in Construction - Dismantling Systemic Prejudice in the Workplace

by Tony Sloan What do you imagine when you think of a construction worker? There is no question that many stereotype the construction industry as a “boys club”. Construction work is widely thought of as a workforce dominated by white men. However, today, the industry is experiencing a significant shift.

As generations change, baby boomers who widely ran the construction world are shifting to retirement. This shift creates room for an emerging workforce, a workforce that is dismantling the stereotypical view of construction.

In 2020, a survey completed by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that only 9.9% of construction professionals are women. The survey also showed that 30.7% are Hispanic or Latino, 6.2% are Black, and only 2% are Asian. US statistics are not collected about the LGBTQIA+ community, but in the UK, only 2% of construction professionals identify as part of the queer community. Further, 71% of these workers reported overhearing LGBT-oriented slurs and insults at work.

These statistics are startling. Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) has proven to be integral to the success of a modern company. According to McKinsey & Company, a Management Consulting Agency, diverse teams are 33% more likely to outperform the profit results of a less diverse team.

Further, innovation and collaboration are more often promoted on diverse teams. With an alarming talent shortage in the industry, the construction world must recognize the value of perspectives from all types of people.

Construction Professional Jessica Carson is a black woman with years in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. She expressed to us that she has encountered unique challenges at work. Carson said, "I found myself wondering how much further I’d be if I didn’t have to spend so much time convincing superintendents, managers, and peers that I am capable."

Ms. Carson, feels her current portfolio and professional experiences now speak for themselves, but getting to this point was difficult for someone in Pictured Above, Jessica Carson her position to endure. She expressed concern about the experiences of other minorities in the industry. “Diversity in the AEC industry must be an international act," she tells LaborChart. Jessica recognizes that companies must include diversity in their leadership, recruitment, and that checks and balances must be in place to mitigate any potential bias. “Organizations will not be able to successfully recruit and retain diverse talk until the soul of the organization commits to equity. Without it, diversity and inclusion will merely be an idea that is contained in a tab on a website.”

Sample 3 Community LINC Grant Proposal

Mission Community LINC’s mission is to end homelessness in Kansas City for this generation and the next.

In alignment with Kansas City Restaurant Week, we believe every family should be able to have a place to call home where they can feel safe and enjoy a nice meal. We provide families with equity to access of resources, including food, so they do not have to worry about their health while they are working to transition to permanent housing. It is paramount to us that our families gain resiliency in their time in our programs. In our programs, clients learn essential life skills to prevent them from ever becoming homeless again.

Population Community LINC currently serves as one of the largest Homeless Assessment Providers, or “hub”, for homeless or at-risk children and their parents as well as individuals within the Kansas City metropolitan area. Ninety percent of families served fall under the federal poverty level. In 2020, our housing programs served 400 individuals: 70% children, 25% under age five, 31% ranging five to twelve, and 11% ages thirteen to seventeen. Participants were 15% white, 72% African-American, and 13% multi-race or other. Additionally, we served 323 clients (for a total of 723) reflective of the diversity of our community with assessments housing placement, referrals, utilities, rental arrears, deposits, hotels, food, diapers, and case management. In 2021, we predict clients of similar volumes and demographic backgrounds.

Historic Impact For over 35 years, Community LINC has ended homelessness for thousands of children and their parents in the Greater Kansas City Area. Our evidence-based programming supported by the National Alliance to End Homelessness helps us break the cycle of homelessness and poverty by creating equity of access to crucial resources and presenting opportunities for stability to families. Our program model has proven successful as five-year data shows that 85% of our graduates who move to permanent housing do not become homeless again.

Additionally, we serve as a behind-the-scenes leader in collaboration, best practices, and change in our community for decades. One of our most important accomplishments was to be a part of creating a unified system to track, organize, and standardize practices to end homelessness. The goal of this initiative was for agency partners to come together for the collective good and no longer submit to territorial boundaries. A past Board Chairman of Community LINC started the push for this change after joining the board of the GKCCEH. His work merged two Continuum of Care territories, led the adoption of a new data system, and implemented Coordinated Entry, a national best practice.

In 2017, Community LINC exemplified our commitment to collaboration by accepting a leadership role, serving as one of five Coordinated Entry screening hubs in Kansas City. Today, we are one of the largest of these hubs by virtue of our location. Our staff serves on every committee of the GKCCEH and our CEO currently serves on the Board of the Greater Kansas City Homeless Coalition. Our Fund Development Director serves in leadership on the Grants Committee charged with researching best practices, developing processes, and overhauling policies and implementation of a $14M federal grant for greater Kansas City.

Community LINC was awarded a large Housing and Economic Development Grant from HUD called Community Housing Access to provide housing access for 200 households exiting other housing shelters or programs that could not find housing priced in the range of $500 - $800 per month, a difficult task in today’s market. This support was offered because of our network of 55+ second chance landlord partners in the Kansas City Community. In addition to this grant, HUD also recognized our Rapid Rehousing Program as an excellent program and published it as a National Best Practice. Community LINC also has a former homeless person that graduated from our program, as well as a current resident serving on our Board and our Programs Committee. The peer perspective is instrumental in giving voice to those we serve and evaluating and monitoring existing programs and designing new, low-barrier programs.

Due to the pandemic, we have had to innovate programming to best serve our community while protecting their safety and health. As a response to the impact the pandemic has had on our community, Community LINC serves on a task force alongside the Homeless Services Coalition and two other agencies with influence from Empower KC, Eviction Lab, City of Kansas City, MARC, and United Way. Through this collaboration, we have expanded our staff to serve hundreds of households all over Kansas City, preventing them from becoming homeless. Some clients were very aware of services while others had never accessed services before, finding themselves affected by this crisis. We are also working to constantly research and study trends to help us navigate the future of our agency in regards to the pandemic. A website was developed KCRelief.org, a streamlined tool for emergency relief for clients. We have shifted much of our programming to digital interfaces, created socially distant activities, and even moved our fundraising efforts to digital platforms.

We have a rich history in ending homelessness in our community, and we endeavor to continue these efforts until every person in Kansas City has a place to call home.

KCRW Funding Use Funds from the Kansas City Restaurant Week will be used to support the shelter and services we provide Kansas City families experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is an issue that affects thousands in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Until 2020, Community LINC had a clear vision on how this community could end homelessness. Today, our vision to end homelessness becomes complicated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Historically, our agency has served those that fall into generational poverty requiring basic survival skills, and those who found themselves homeless due to unforeseen circumstances such as unemployment, illness, or loss of a loved one.

As the pandemic deteriorates our economy, our Kansas City residents suffer a lack of affordable housing, employment, and food scarcity. Community LINC has three housing programs focused diligently on self-sufficiency. Our program for those with low-barrier needs, The Community Housing Access Prevention & Diversion Program helps people, especially those affected financially by the COVID-19 pandemic, transition directly from hotels, motels, or shelters into permanent housing. Further, our longest-standing, medium-barrier program, The Interim Housing Program offers families a fully-furnished apartment along with Trauma-Informed case management and programming tailored to their success. Parents learn life skills such as budgeting and employment readiness while their children are enrolled in our Children’s Program to help them develop social skills and succeed in school. Once a family exits this program, they are offered up to nine months of aftercare to ensure sustainable success. Beyond our on-campus interim program, our third transitional housing program, Home for Good, assists families with high barriers such as evictions and criminal records. This program helps parents who have lost custody of their children gain the support and stability they need to reunify and ultimately secure permanent housing.

In 2021, Community LINC expects to achieve the following outcomes: 80% of families will exit to permanent housing; 70% of households will secure employment; 70% of adults will improve self-sufficiency, based on the Michigan Self Sufficiency Matrix; and 70% of adults will decrease housing-related debts.

Further, KCRW will be thanked as a sponsor at our annual Rent Party and in our annual report, which reaches hundreds of our supporters each year.

Additionally, Community LINC will promote KCRW through our monthly email newsletter and special digital advertising geared toward restaurant week specifically. We will also share details of Restaurant Week with all of our board and staff and encourage their participation in the event.

Therapy of all sorts is an important step to treatment. As our struggles grow, so does our need for help. There are many different methods of alternative medicine and therapy. One successful treatment option that is gaining renown is art therapy as treatment.

The use of art therapy to treat substance addictions dates back to the 1950s. Medical professionals believe the reason art therapy is successful is because it gives patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) an opportunity to express themselves using imaginative and creative methods. These methods were found to be particularly effective with women and adolescent patients.

Although art therapy may not be a form of conventional care, it is often prescribed by therapists and doctors in treating patients with SUDs. The road to health for you or a loved one could be paved with self-expression and creativity. Here are some methods of art therapy you may find useful to learn more about: 1. Visual Art Therapy Visual Art Therapy includes using painting, sculpture, and other forms of creation to help patients express themselves emotionally. Using this method can help access and express parts of their recovery in a nonverbal method. Commonly medical professionals will have the patient describe their creation from their point of view.

2. Music Therapy Music Therapy is proven to develop a patient’s cognitive functions including attention and memory. Learning an instrument can give a patient a chance to cope with uncomfortable situations or depression. Musical also creates a sense of familiarity and success that can help someone suffering with an SUD feel safe and practice healthy habits.

3. Drama Therapy Drama therapy can help patients develop personal connections and communication skills. Theatre is a group effort that requires emotional vulnerability. The practice of drama therapy is typically in the form of roleplaying, improvisation, and story-telling. Successful drama therapy can help increase a patient’s self-image and emotional awareness, as well as their ability to communicate social problems and to build healthy living routines.
