Summer is in full swing and Torre del Mar is no longer the quietish town that we locals are used to, as it has been taken over by thousands of holidaymakers from all over the world. However it remains a very Spanish town, as the Spaniards from the north of Spain vacate their inland homes for a month or two in order to enjoy the cooler, more comfortable temperatures that the coast has to offer.

Summer means the parking nightmare will rear its ugly face once again … but will it?

With the new Blue Parking initiative in place in Torre del Mar this year, maybe we can all enjoy the town that little bit more easily than in years gone by. Only time will tell!

The world’s largest whisky bottle has sold for more than £1,000,000 to a mystery buyer.

The bottle — named the Intrepid — is 32 years old and stands at 5ft 11 tall. It holds 311 litres of Macallan single malt — enough liquid to fill 444 standard bottles.

An anonymous foreign buyer purchased the whisky at Edinburghbased auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull for £1.1 million.

Chip wars An East Sussex pub called police after a mother and son complained about a portion of chips.

The row over chilli-topped chips at The Drove in Newhaven, East Sussex — a Brewer's Fayre pub — escalated after a furious customer branded them a 'monstrosity'.

James Lewin, 22, blasted the pub chain when his portion of chipotle beef chilli-topped chips arrived at his table without the advertised 'gooey' cheese sauce, soured cream and spring onions.

Lewin was at the venue with his mum, Natasha Sherwood, 40, his girlfriend and little sister.

They were offered a full refund on their £70 order because the chef was ‘too tired’ to make their food again, but things escalated, the refund offer was withdrawn and police were called.

A spokesman for Brewer’s Fayre said: ‘Whilst we appreciate there may have been disappointment, our teams work hard to provide a great service and abusive behaviour is not tolerated in any circumstances.’

Strange News (Continued) Quacking effort Leicestershire hero Edan March climbed into a water-filled sewer to save eight ducklings that had fallen into a drain.

Edan, 26, had been woken by the mother duck quacking in distress near his home.

After putting his ear to several manholes along the street, he heard tiny quacking noises, so he grabbed a wrench from his garage, removed the drain cover and jumped inside.

He then lifted seven of the chicks, one-byone, to partner Georgia Littlejohn, 27, who reunited them with their mother.

‘I just acted on instinct really,’ said Edan after the rescue. ‘I’m 6ft 1in tall and was fully submerged when I went down the drain.’

Edan, of Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, said the Mallard had been nesting in his front garden for several weeks before the mishap.

‘We assume she was leading them to a pond when the babies fell down the drain,’ he added.

‘We led the ducklings to the pond and stood on each drain grid to ensure no more fell in.’

Outfoxed A cyclist has appeared in court for using bank cards found in a wallet that had been nabbed and then dropped in the street — by a fox.

The fleet-footed mammal helped itself to the victim's wallet from under a car before ditching it in the street.

Less than five minutes later, it was picked up by 'opportunist' Qasim Hussain, 36, who used its contents to buy £70 worth of cigarettes and alcohol.

Prosecutor Anne Sawyer-Brandish told Oxford Magistrates’ Court that the foxy larcenist was caught on camera sloping off with the wallet, which had fallen to the ground when its owner opened his car door.

Qasim Hussain spotted the wallet on the floor and used it instead of handing it in.

Prosecutor Anne Sawyer-Brandish revealed Hussain had 45 convictions to his name, including previous shoplifting offences.

Nawaz Khan, mitigating, said Hussain’s offense was purely opportunistic with the aid of the fox.

She explained: ‘Mr Hussain just happened to be passing by and rode over the wallet, stopped and found this credit card in there.

The fox is still on the run!

An elderly person’s dilemma

I know I shouldn’t have done this, but I am 83 years old and I was in the McDonald’s drive-thru this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn and started mouthing something because I was taking too long to place my order.

Don't blow your horn at old people, they have been around a long time

So when I got to the first window I paid for her order along with my own.

The cashier must have told her what I'd done because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you", obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness.

When I got to the second window I showed them both receipts and took her food too.

Sierra Leone was the departure point for thousands of West African captives. The North American slave trade was essentially launched from the site of modern-day Freetown in 1560. By the 18th century, Portuguese and British trading settlements lined the coast.

In 1808, the British increased efforts to halt the slave trade and set up a naval unit off the Sierra Leone coast along with a court in Freetown to prosecute the crew of seized slave ships. Between 1808 and 1864, around 84,000 slaves were freed this way and settled in the hills that today form the Western Area Peninsula National Park.

Sierra Leone has one of the world’s lowest life expectancies. As of 2020, it had the fourth-lowest life expectancy at just 54.3 years.

In 1991, Sierra Leone slipped into a decade-long civil war that left more than 50,000 people dead and witnessed many atrocities such as murder, rape, mutilation and the recruitment of child soldiers. The war ended in 2002.

From lonely and broken to happy and fulfilled, a story of hope Aiden (53) describes his life before Alcoholics Anonymous as frightened, lonely, and broken. He now says he has purpose, motivation, clarity, and faith. To anyone struggling with alcohol he says, give AA a go. It is possible to have a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life without the use of alcohol.

“I come from a family of drinkers, my father also used and dealt in drugs. I first started drinking at age 12, during dinner with the family. By 15 years old I was stealing alcohol and mixing it with drugs. At 18 I was regularly drinking to excess and driving whilst over the limit.

I attended my first AA meeting aged 21 because my ex-wife had suggested it would help our relationship. I went, identified completely, and proceeded to the pub to discuss it. I then embarked on a 15-year journey to prove I was not an alcoholic, … turns out I was!

Over the following years, my drinking and using just got worse. I was scared, dazed, and confused, both on the inside and the outside - I couldn’t deal with my life or my behaviour. I used relationships, sex, gambling, eating, work, exercise, in fact anything I could to change the way I felt.

My rock bottom came aged 35, I was frightened, lonely, and broken. I had gotten myself in some trouble and there was a very real threat of violence towards myself and my family. My marriage was in tatters, my kids feared me. I was overworked and financially insecure. I was using drugs and alcohol daily - in the morning to get me going and then in the evening to slow me down. It was insanity - finally when the rehab called, I went.

I went to my second AA meeting in September 2004. This time it was different, I was different. I liked AA; the meetings made me feel safe. I related to other people and what was being said. I felt like I belonged, and I had a place to be part of something positive. I also believed it would keep me out of prison.

I have been clean and sober since late October 2004, I still go to meetings each week and I help others. AA is a process that helps the alcoholic overcome more than just a drink problem. It has given me so much more. I no longer need an outside “thing” to fix my feelings.

My life now is fabulous, all the relationships that matter are in good shape - including the one I have with myself. I have purpose, motivation, clarity, and faith. I accept that even though humans both endure and cause pain and suffering there is an enormous amount of good in this world.

To anyone struggling with alcohol I would say, give AA a go. It is possible to have a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life without the use of alcohol.”

The ‘Secret Garden’ Restaurant - Canillas De Aceituno Have you ever wondered what a real ‘Secret Garden’ is like? So secret that when you enter inside there is a magical feeling that shoots through you, a sight so beautiful that you just want to take some amazing photos and make some wonderful memories…

Well, there is good news as there is a ‘Secret Garden’ in the not so far away quaint village of Canillas de Aceituno. Sebastian and partner Edy have turned their once white village Andalucian home into the most perfect garden restaurant. The Sentinella team received a lovely invitation from the owners to attend one of their pre-opening nights in June. With the Mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, Vicente Campos González who was in attendance, it was a very special occasion.

On arrival, entering the big black iron gates we walked up the path and there before our eyes was this ‘Secret Garden’, how could a property in the back streets of Canillas de Aceituno have a garden that was so beautiful.

The celebratory Cava popped open and the hosts showed us around, there were lots of wow’s and gasps of, oh my goodness that is so beautiful!

Once seated, we were welcomed a little more

by Edy who explained that for guests to be connected with the secret garden they place a little orange scented oil in our hands. The smell was so citrusy and summery; we spent the next few minutes just smelling the aroma on our hands.

Sebastian, the qualified Chef of the two owners gave us the menu which appeared a little simple at first, but turned out to be stunning, with a selection of starters, mains and desserts to suit anyone's palate. Whilst we sat perusing the menu, we noticed a particularly nice bottle of olive oil on the table with black garlic inside. We could not wait to try it when all of a sudden Edy came out with a tray of freshly homemade warm rolls, tomato and oregano and beer and poppy seed. They were both delicious in their own way, but with them dipped in the olive oil they tasted so good, so good in fact that we asked if they had the olive oil for sale, which they did and ended up purchasing two bottles one of the Black garlic, and one of Black truffle.

The ‘Secret Garden’ Restaurant - Canillas De Aceituno We sampled a selection of all the starters, a tomato with fresh mozzarella and edible wild flower salad, cannelloni with beef and chorizo bolognese and Mil Hojas, Iberic ham and goat’s cheese between toasted bread with a mango reduction. There was not a bad word to be said about any of them, they were all so tasty!

It is the most perfect venue for celebrating special birthdays, anniversaries, a group meal or a romantic dinner for two and Sebastian and Edy will undoubtedly make your evening a very enjoyable one with their chatty and extremely loveable demeanour.

The restaurant has two very different visual settings, daytime is beautiful with the pool glistening in the sunshine, sitting in the shade under the lemon and orange trees and in the evening it comes alive with lights and candles twinkling everywhere.

The Secret Garden Restaurant is open Monday – Sunday 11am – midnight. So there you have it, it’s not so ‘Secret’ now, but it’s still a secret place until you have experienced it yourself!

Next, the mains; we ordered spaghetti prawn Pil Pil and solomillo de ternera, the steaks cooked just to your liking and to perfection, the spaghetti extremely tasty and all dishes were presented beautifully. Although we almost had no room for desserts it would be rude not to partake, cheesecake with white chocolate and raspberries, double chocolate brownie and a vanilla ice cream with raisins soaked in rum and honey, who could resist such a temptation! They were so delicious we had no problem polishing them off too! It’s important to mention that the majority of the food is freshly prepared and homemade.

In a hospital's Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11am, regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the supernatural.

Do I Need A Lawyer When I Sell My Property?

The simple answer to this question is, yes.

Why? First and foremost, for peace of mind because things don’t always run smoothly. A lawyer ensures all paperwork is presented correctly and can swiftly deal with any unforeseen issues that may arise prior to the signing. Secondly, the taxation on sales of property is case specific; whilst you may be given an estimate by the estate agents, each particular sale should be reviewed by a lawyer. Thirdly, the retention of funds - you don´t want to find monies are being retained indefinitely unless you understand why and have a lawyer who follows up on these matters.

For British clients there can be the additional worry about converting the funds into sterling from euros. If you are considering selling, it is a good idea to get legal advice early on to avoid any unexpected problems on the day.

In a number of transactions between British people, we have been able to undertake the transaction in sterling provided the Notary is satisfied they have evidence of the payment for the sale. If there is a mortgage on the property which will be paid off on sale, your lawyer will ensure that the bank is available on the day of signing the deed to cancel the mortgage. All other debts such as community of owners bills, utilities etc... can be settled on the day or retentions made to cover these costs.

For non-residents there is also a 3% retention on the sale price which is on account of Capital Gains tax. If you have not made a capital gain and are up to date with your non-resident taxes you can apply for the return of this 3%. Your lawyer can arrange this but in some cases you may have to wait some months before the return of the funds.

There is still some uncertainty about the obligation to pay Plus valía tax to the Town Hall when you make a loss on the sale.

There are currently two ways in which to calculate the Plus valía and your lawyer can guide you toward the more economical option.

If you are not able to be in Spain on the day of sale you can grant lawyers a Spanish form Power of attorney to act for you. A lawyer instructed by you can ensure all of the retentions are correct and provide you with an individual tailored service.

5 Steps To Be Followed For Dealing With An Inheritance... ...of an Expat or Non-Resident in Spain Organising an inheritance in Spain is a difficult task for everyone, specially if you don’t know the Spanish law.

In this post we explain the basic steps to be followed when a non-resident or expat passes away owning assets in Spain. It is necessary to carry out a legal procedure to change ownership of assets of the deceased person into the name of the heirs.

1st Step: Get an original death certificate.

This official document is normally provided by the funeral company and it can also be obtained from the Civil Registry.

2nd Step: Get original certificates of the last will (if any) signed by the deceased person, as well as the certificate of any life insurance policies in place.

With these certificates we will confirm if the deceased person made a will in Spain. We can find two situations: a) Existence of a will made inside or outside Spain. In this case the assets will be distributed according to the wishes of the deceased person. b) Non-existence of a will. If the deceased person never made a will, the distribution of

his assets will be made according to the laws of his nationality.

3rd Step: The heirs or relatives of the deceased person will have to sign an inheritance deed in front of a Spanish Public Notary in order to accept and distribute all the assets. Please, be aware that debts are also inherited so it is important to confirm that the value of the assests is higher than any possible debts.

4th Step: Filling Inheritance Tax Form 650 with the local Tax Office. For EU citizens there are allowances up to 1.000.000 euros per heir (in case of direct relatives: spouse and children), so in most cases there won’t be any inheritance tax to be paid. The inheritance taxes must be filled within 6 months from the date of the death.

5th Step: Take the inheritance title deeds to the Land Registry in case the deceased person owned a real estate property or to banks / insurance companies in case the deceased person had funds, bank accounts or life insurance policies.

We recommend hiring the professional services of a solicitor so this procedure can be done in a speedy and correct way.

The singer opened up about the condition on his Instagram account, following news he had postponed tour dates due to a health issue.

He posted a shocking video in which he announced to fans he is suffering from the paralysis as a result of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

In the video, Bieber attempts to smile, blink and move his face but one side remains still as he continues to speak.

He told fans: "I wanted to update you guys on what's been going on. “I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome," he said. “It's from a virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis. As you can see, one eye is not blinking."

Simon’s double Simon Cowell's jaw dropped on a recent episode of America's Got Talent after meeting a contestant who had the same face as him.

Simon is usually hard to impress, but he was nothing but smiles and astonishment when he saw his own face staring back at him.

The act, called MetaPhysic Media, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create "hyperreal content," according to them.

MetaPhysic consisted of two men, of whom one was Daniel Emmet, an opera singer who made it to the top 10 on season 13.

Community Support - Our New Noticeboard Mikel and I are lucky enough to have use of a fabulous office, for our agency, in a wonderful location, just off the A356 at the exit for Trapiche village, just North of Velez-Malaga.

It’s easy to get to and convenient for any potential house hunters heading up towards Viñuela, or Canillas, Comares, Benamargosa and many more villages, who regularly stop and take a look to see what we have on offer.

A lot of traders and services also drop by and regularly leave cards, leaflets and special offers on their products and services. We keep everything on a table in the entrance to the office.

Well we don’t want to keep our little hub just to ourselves, so as of July this year we will be putting up a big notice board just inside the

office. Here, we will display all the leaflets, business cards and notices we regularly receive. Anyone will be able to pop in, when we are open, and take a look at what’s on offer, add their own cards, and find that perfect contact! Maybe you have lost an animal, or have kittens to find homes for, or want to put up a notice that you are looking for a gardener or a plumber. You are all welcome!
