Females lay thousands of eggs (usually between 2,000-10,000), but less than 1 per cent of these eggs survive to reproduce. Salmon can migrate more than 3,000kms upstream through freshwater to spawn, and Chinook salmon can migrate 16,000kms through their North Pacific ocean feeding grounds. That is four times the driving distance between Vancouver and Toronto. Chinook salmon or King salmon are the largest in the Pacific Ocean. They can weigh over 250kg. Salmon often travel 50kms per day on their spawning journeys.
