Here I am, now in Sun Valley, Idaho, faced with the sweet-smelling prospect of a summer packed with hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. My partner and I went on our first hike this week! I felt so excited that I even bought brand new hiking clothes for the occasion (choosing a delicious purple theme). Perhaps somewhat naively, I had expected a fairly simple and effortless stroll over and across the pleasant-looking land. But oh no! This was uphill all the way and proper hard work on both legs and breathing. We had barely reached the first bend and I was already panting and perspiring. “Come on, we’ve got a ways to go yet,” my partner said. I used what felt like every last ounce of my energy and breath to reach the next bend. By this point I was literally gasping for air, on the verge of having some kind of attack. This time I cowered to the ground and let the blood rush to my head, utterly deflated and anxious that my heart was pumping so incredibly fast. As my partner pressed on, me left behind in his footsteps, at one point I even began to cry. But somehow, amidst all of this pain and assumed torture, I made it to the top of the mountain and inhaled slowly, smiling as I absorbed the scenic view. Going downhill was far easier and at times I didn’t walk but ran down the mountain, feeling so free and happy as we passed brightly-coloured butterflies, exotic birds and plenty of ancient, wise trees. Once at the bottom, as I stood under a hot shower, I realised that this climb was not unlike what I and others go through when it comes to our life goals. We all want to achieve something by reaching our goals, yet en-route we may feel like crying and stopping at multiple points. Those who continue upwards, despite the pain and exhaustion, are the ones who reach the peak and can then enjoy the view and feel the freedom. the question is, will you be one of the people who continues on despite the pain, the tiredness and the tears?
