HEAD COACH JASON MARSHALL FIRST SEASON (13TH OVERALL AT UTSA) After serving as an assistant and associate head coach at UTSA for 12 years, Jason Marshall was named the fourth head coach in Roadrunners baseball history on June 18. “We are thrilled to promote Jason to lead our baseball program,” Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said when she announced his hiring. “He has shown his commitment to the program over the last 12 years and has established himself as one of the top coaches in the country. He is a great communicator and teacher of the game and I am excited for what he will bring to the future of UTSA baseball.” “First and foremost, I want to thank Sherman Corbett for his leadership of the program for the past 12 years,” Marshall said. “It has been an honor to share the dugout with one of the great character men in college baseball. Also, I want to thank Athletics Director Lynn Hickey and Senior Associate Athletics Director Ross Cobb for giving me this opportunity at such a pivotal juncture in the program’s history. “It has been an honor to influence the lives of so many young men over the last several years and it is humbling to be asked to lead the Roadrunners baseball team. I can’t thank enough of the people who have invested in my life at some point along the way. This is a huge honor for me and I carry them with me daily in this job. I am looking forward to leading this program back to championship caliber.” Marshall has spent 12 years on the Roadrunners’ coaching staff, including the last nine as the associate head coach, under Corbett. The Abilene native was hired at UTSA prior to the 2001 season and spent three campaigns as an assistant before being promoted to associate head coach. He has served as both the infielders coach and recruiting coordinator while running the Roadrunners’ camps. His efforts on the recruiting trails have resulted in a pair of AllAmericans, five Freshman All-Americans, 55 Southland Conference performers (including 11 first teamers), the 2007 and ‘08 Southland regular season championships and 2005 Southland Tournament title. Meanwhile, 26 UTSA players have gone on to play professionally, including 16 who have been selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 2002, Mark Schramek became the first player in school history to be selected in the first round when he was the 40th overall selection by the Cincinnati Reds and Matt Crocker became the third-highest pick in program history in June 2010 when he was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the 12th round. A standout performer at Texas A&M from 1989-92, he was named the Aggies’ Most Valuable Player after leading the team in games played (61), hits (66), runs scored (35) and RBIs (40) as a senior. Following his collegiate career, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 13th round of the 1992 MLB Draft. Marshall went on to play four seasons in the Royals organization before finishing his professional career in 1995. He then entered the coaching ranks as a student assistant at his alma mater in 1996 and was a member of Texas A&M’s staff for two seasons. In summer 1997, Marshall coached with the Cotuit Kettleers in the prestigious Cape Cod League. The following fall, he was hired as the assistant in charge of defense and recruiting at McMurry University. Marshall helped lead the Indians to postseason play in two of his three seasons and, in 1998, McMurry won the American Southwest Conference regular season and tournament championships. Marshall, who earned a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M in 1996, and his wife, Ashleigh, have two sons, Cooper and Jackson, and a daughter, Kate.

WAC TOURNAMENT REWIND No. 4 seed UTSA rolled to four consecutive wins to capture the program’s first Western Athletic Conference Tournament last week in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Roadrunners opened pool play with a 3-2, 14-inning victory over fifthseeded Sacramento State that was ended on RJ Perucki’s walk-off solo home run. A day later, UTSA pounded out 20 hits in a 13-3, eight-inning rout of No. 8 seed San Jose State. The Birds then clinched a spot in the championship game with a 1-0 victory over top-seeded CSU Bakersfield in a game that started on Friday night, was suspended in the fifth due to lightning, and finished on Saturday morning. Mike Warren provided the go-ahead RBI double in the sixth that lifted UTSA to the title game. The Roadrunners faced a 2-0 deficit against No. 7 seed Dallas Baptist in the championship, but rallied by scoring multiple runs in each of the final four frames en route to an 11-4 win, which sent UTSA to the its first postseason in eight years. ABOUT THE OREGON STATE GAME The Roadrunners and Beavers have met only one time before Friday night, a non-conference contest at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio on Feb. 28, 2011. Oregon State plated three runs in the second inning to take an early lead, but UTSA scored two in the third and one run in the fourth, fifth and seventh to move in front, 5-3. However, the Beavers answered in the top of the ninth with four runs, including a three-run homer by Danny Hayes to reclaim a 7-5 advantage. In the bottom of the panel, the Birds answered with two tallies on an RBI double by Tyler Carpenter and a run-scoring single by Ryan Dalton to tie the game. Oregon State then went ahead for good, thanks to pinch hitter Carter Bell’s three-run double in the 10th. The Beavers retired the Roadrunners in order in the bottom half to pull out the 10-7 victory. BIRDS AGAINST THE PAC-12 UTSA is 5-6 all-time against current Pac-12 Conference teams. The Roadrunners are 0-2 versus Arizona State, 0-1 against Oregon State and 2-2 versus Utah. MORE ON THE TEXAS A&M SERIES UTSA and Texas A&M have met 30 times prior to the NCAA Corvallis Regional. The Aggies hold a 21-9 edge in the alltime series dating back to the 1993 campaign and have won seven of the last eight meetings, including an 11-4 victory on April 2 in College Station. The two teams have never met at a neutral site.

QUARTET NAMED ALL-WAC Senior Daniel Rockett, juniors Riley Good and RJ Perucki and redshirt freshman Brock Hartson were honored by the Western Athletic Conference as the all-league teams were announced on May 21. Perucki earned first-team honors, while Good, Hartson and Rockett landed on the second team.

UTSA COACHES WITH TIES TO TEXAS A&M UTSA head coach Jason Marshall was a standout performer for the Aggies from 1989-92 and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player after leading the team in games played (61), hits (66), runs scored (35) and RBI (40) as a senior. Marshall also started his coaching career as a student assistant coach (1996-97) in College Station. Meanwhile, sixth-year assistant coach Brett Lawler is the son of Jim Lawler, who spent 21 years as an assistant under former Texas A&M head coach Mark Johnson.

REMARKABLE TURNAROUND UTSA is just a year removed from posting 22-32 overall record and finishing last in the Southland Conference standings. The Roadrunners enter the NCAA Corvallis Regional with a 35-23 overall mark under first-year head coach Jason Marshall, who spent 12 years as an assistant on the staff. UTSA, which was picked to finish eighth in the preseason Western Athletic Conference poll, earned the fourth seed to the league’s tournament and swept through the field to clinch the third conference tournament title in program history. The Roadrunners, who also posted 30-plus wins for the first time since 2009, advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2005.

ROADRUNNERS AND GAUCHOS HAVE NEVER MET UTSA and UC Santa Barbara would be meeting for the first time if the two teams square off in this weekend’s NCAA Corvallis Regional. The Roadrunners also have never played a team from the Big West Conference. UC SANTA BARBARA COACH TIED TO UTSA UCSB volunteer assistant coach Zach Etheredge is a former player at UTSA (2004-08). Etheredge, who was a catcher for the Roadrunners, started 192 games during his career in the Alamo City and is second in program history with 1,203 putouts. The Boerne, Texas, native, who is in his second season on the Gauchos’ coaching staff, redshirted during UTSA’s run to the 2005 NCAA Regional, but was the starting backstop in the Roadrunners’ back-to-back Southland Conference Regular Season Championships in 2007-08.

SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR FOR MARSHALL UTSA head coach Jason Marshall spent 12 years on the Roadrunners’ coaching staff as the top assistant before being promoted after Sherman Corbett stepped down last summer. Marshall, who spent the last nine seasons as the associate head coach, became the second skipper in program history to guide the Roadrunners to 30 wins in his first season (Corbett won 30 games in 2001). Marshall also guided UTSA to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship after finishing the regular season in fourth place. TIME FOR A RALLY In the 35 victories this season, UTSA has come-from-behind in 20 of those contests, including an 11-4 win over Dal-

LUCKY SEVEN UTSA brings a season-long seven-game winning streak into this weekend’s Corvallis Regional. The streak, which started on May 16 at Louisiana Tech, has been fueled by dominant pitching performances. The Roadrunners have allowed only nine earned runs (13 total) during the seven games and limited opposing teams to a .183 batting average. Meanwhile, the offense is hitting at a .313 clip with 19 doubles, a triple and seven home runs during that span. RUN AT YOUR OWN RISK Sophomore John Bormann has proven to be one of the top defensive backstops in the country. Entering NCAA Regional play, Bormann leads the nation with 14 pickoffs, including four at second base, and has thrown out 60.8 percent (31of-51) of potential base stealers. Only Oregon State’s Jake Rodriguez (66.7 percent [18-of-27]) has thrown out runners at a higher clip this season than Bormann. The Seguin, Texas, native, who was named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list on May 1, has caught all 514.2 innings and has allowed only three passed balls this spring. MORE ON BORMANN While John Bormann has been receiving mention for his defensive abilities, the 6-foot, 200-pounder was UTSA’s leading hitter at last week’s WAC Tournament. Bormann hit .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles and a pair of RBIs in the Rodarunners’ championship run. On the year, the Seguin native is hitting .295 and is tied for the team lead with 13 doubles to go along with a homer and 29 RBIs. PEN IT TO WIN IT UTSA was not been shy about lifting its starters early and handing the ball over to the bullpen this season. UTSA’s bullpen has figured into the pitching decision 25 times this season and the relief corps have posted a 20-5 record. SIMS DOMINATING AGAIN Junior reliever Matt Sims was nearly unhittable in WAC Tournament action en route to being named the Most Valuable Player. The Cypress, Texas, native allowed only three hits, all singles, in 11.2 innings of work last week. In his last six outings overall, Sims is 3-0 with three saves and has not allowed a run over 19.0 stanzas. He also has limited opposing hitters to a .136 batting average. The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder has accounted for 14 (six wins/eight saves) of UTSA’s 35 victories this spring. PERUCKI HITS BACK-TO-BACK BOMBS Junior infielder RJ Perucki ended the longest game in WAC Tournament history with a walk-off home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the 14th inning which gave UTSA a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State on May 22. The following day, the Tomball, Texas, native homered in his first at-bat

against San Jose State, a three-run dinger, to give the Birds an early lead. UTSA went on to hammer the Spartans, 13-3, in eight innings. IT’S ALL GOOD Junior outfielder Riley Good is riding a career-long 16-game hitting streak into Friday’s contest. The Grandview, Texas, native, who started his streak on April 28 at Dallas Baptist, is hitting .338 (24-for-71) with three doubles, two triples and nine RBIs during that span. He tied a program record with five hits in UTSA’s 13-3 rout of San Jose State last Thursday. HARTSON LEADS THE STAFF Redshirt freshman Brock Hartson has forced his way to the front of the UTSA pitching staff this season. Hartson, who sat out last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, leads the Roadrunners’ rotation with an 9-4 record and a 3.10 ERA. The Pearland, Texas, native received the bulk of his success in league play, where the right-hander posted a 6-2 mark with a 3.61 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .273 batting average. Below is how Hartson compares to other freshman pitchers across the nation with at least nine victories (as of May 27). PERUCKI IS NO FLUKE-Y Junior infielder RJ Perucki is enjoying a breakout season at the plate. The Tomball, Texas, native leads the team in several offensive categories, including batting average (.349), runs (49), home runs (12) and total bases (129). Below is comparison of the improvement of his offense over the last three seasons. MORE ON PERUCKI Perucki also was UTSA’s top hitter in WAC play this season. The right-handed hitter is battering opposing pitching staffs to the tune of a .367 batting average with five doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs in 26 league contests. ROCKETT TAKING OFF Senior outfielder Daniel Rockett is putting a dent in UTSA’s record book this season. The Sugar Land, Texas, native, who is the younger brother of former UTSA All-American Michael Rockett, is climbing into the top 10 of the program’s career lists in several offensive categories. UPGRADED PITCHING STAFF UTSA’s pitching staff has been a nice compliment to the Roadrunners’ explosive offense this season. The staff has amassed a 4.34 ERA, which is the third-lowest in program history and lowest since 2006 (4.29). UTSA also led the WAC by allowing only 160 walks during the regular season. The Roadrunners have been guided by Brett Lawler, who made the move to pitching coach after spending his first five seasons in San Antonio working with the offense.

SCORING WITH TWO OUTS The Roadrunners have scored 154 of their 351 runs (43.9 percent) with two outs this season. CLOSING TIME Since 2007, UTSA is 159-7 when leading after the eighth inning. The Roadrunners are 30-0 when entering the ninth with a lead this season. UTSA IN THE NCAA RANKINGS Entering the week, UTSA ranks 23rd in the nation with 618 hits and 25th with its .304 batting average. The Roadrunners also are slugging at a .425 clip, which is good for 35th in the country. SIMS NAMED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior reliever Matt Sims was named WAC Pitcher of the Week on May 20. The right-hander logged two saves in his two relief appearances last week against Louisiana Tech. Sims, who struck out four of the seven batters he faced, allowed only one hit in 2.1 innings of work while securing a pair of victories for the Roadrunners. This season, the Cypress, Texas, native, who has not allowed a run in his last four outings, is 4-2 with eight saves, a bullpen-best 2.70 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 43.1 stanzas. DOMINATING BULLPEN PERFORMANCES UTSA’s bullpen was dominant during the final 10 days of April. During the six-game span (April 21-30), the Roadrunners’ relief corps only allowed three runs in 32 innings of work. CORREA III’S 16-GAME HITTING STREAK ENDS Sophomore infielder Horacio Correa III saw his career-long 16-game hitting streak come to an end on May 3 against Texas State. During the streak, the Cypress, Texas, native hit .351 with two doubles and eight RBIs. DOUBLE THE PLEASURE UTSA registered double-digit hits in eight consecutive games earlier this season (March 22-April 9). On April 9, the Roadrunners posted 17 knocks in a 12-5 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. During that span, UTSA’s offense recorded a .352 batting average (106-for-301) with 22 doubles, eight home runs and 58 RBIs. ROCKETT NAMED WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK TWICE Senior outfielder Daniel Rockett has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week twice this season (Feb. 18 and March 4). Rockett earned his first award after leading the Roadrunners to a four-game sweep of Air Force. During the series, Rockett batted .733 (11-of-15) with two doubles, a homer, four RBIs and scored six runs. His 16 total bases translated to a 1.067 slugging percentage and he reached base at a .762 clip. Two weeks later, he again was named WAC Hitter of the Week while pacing the Roadrunners offense in a three-game sweep during the UTSA Classic. During UTSA’s 4-0 week, Rockett hit .538 (7-of-13) with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs, a stolen base and scored twice during the week. The Sugar Land native slugged .923 and reached base at a .571 clip. COX TABBED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior reliever Wesley Cox was tabbed the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 18. Cox, a native of Rockwall, Texas, appeared in both ends of UTSA’s doubleheader last Saturday against Air Force. In the opener, he picked up the win in relief and posted a save in the nightcap. For the week, Cox was 1-0 with a save, a 1.50 ERA and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. ROADRUNNERS PICKED 8TH IN WAC POLL In its first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference, UTSA was picked to finish eighth in the 10-team league. Dallas Baptist earned eight first-place votes and was selected to win the league by the circuit’s coaches.

UTSA TO JOIN CONFERENCE USA IN 2013 UTSA will be on the move once again in 2013, as it accepted an invitation from Conference USA (C-USA) last May. The Roadrunners will join the 16-team league on July 1, 2013. The “new” C-USA lineup will feature Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, FIU (Florida International), Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB and UTEP in addition to UTSA. Western Kentucky will join C-USA in all sports in July 2014, while East Carolina and Tulane will move all sports to the Big East in July 2014. UTSA INKS SEVEN TO LETTERS OF INTENT UTSA signed seven players for the 2014 season. The players who signed are Jeremy Filipek (Langley, British Columbia/Walnut Grove Secondary School/Midland JC), Matt Hilston (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS/McLennan CC), Logan Kinder (Round Rock, Texas/Rouse HS), Mitch Matulia (Kingwood, Texas/Park HS), Boone Mokry (Pleasanton, Texas/Pleasanton HS/McLennan CC), CJ Pickering (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) and Andres Vieyra (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center HS/Barton CC). UTSA WINS WAC COMMISSIONER’S CUP UTSA won the Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup, the league office announced on May 28. The Roadrunners, who scored 90 points, ended the year with WAC Championships in indoor track & field and baseball (tournament). The UTSA Baseball team gained 8.5 points for their performance in the regular season and by winning the WAC Tournament Championship. UTSA now has captured three conference commissioner’s cups in the last six years (2007-08 & 2010-11 Southland Conference) and the Roadrunners have finished third or higher in cup races in each of the last eight years.
