2012 UTSA Roadrunners Baseball

TEAM COMPARISON Below is a look at how UTSA stacks up against this weekend’s opponent (2011 stats).

HEAD COACH SHERMAN CORBETT 12TH SEASON (331-297, .527) With more than 20 years of playing and coaching experience, Sherman Corbett begins his 12th year at the helm of UTSA’s baseball program this spring. The last half decade has seen the program experience success never seen in the Alamo City. UTSA has posted four seasons of at least 32 wins in the last six years and a total of 193 during that span (32 per season). The Roadrunners also won the 2007 and ‘08 Southland Conference Regular Season Championships and Corbett was named the league’s Clay Gould Coach of the Year those two years. Last spring, Corbett guided the Roadrunners to their eighth postseason berth in his tenure after winning 27 games. Riley Good earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball after setting program frosh records in hits (86) and stolen bases (16). Good joined Tyler Carpenter, Ryan Dalton, Ryan Hutson and Casey Selsor in earning All-Southland accolades. Meanwhile, Hutson became the program’s all-time home run leader after belting three on the final day of the regular season, which earned him National Co-Hitter of the Week accolades (May 24). The Roadrunners notched 13 comefrom-behind victories, including a walk-off 3-2 win in 10 innings over ninth-ranked Texas A&M. In 2010, Dalton earned Southland Freshman of the Year and consensus Freshman All-America honors after tying for the conference lead with a program frosh-record 17 home runs (second in NCAA among freshmen) and leading the Birds with 51 RBIs. UTSA launched a Southland-best 71 long balls in just 50 games and that total ranks second in school history. Hutson (first team) and Ryan Rummel (third team) also earned postseason laurels from the league. The winningest coach in UTSA Athletics history (331 victories), he led the Roadrunners to a school-record-tying 39 wins in 2008, including a league-best 22 in conference play, and their second consecutive regular season championship in school history en route to being named the league’s Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Corbett has coached 51 All-Southland players, including 11 first teamers, and 14 all-academic honorees. He also has mentored the 2001 Southland Pitcher of the Year (Jared Howton), 2002 Southland Player and Hitter of the Year (Mark Schramek), 2003 Southland Freshman of the Year (Ryan Crew), 2007 Southland Newcomer of the Year (Trent Lockwood), 2007 Southland Freshman of the Year (Tim Palincsar), 2008 Southland Player of the Year (Rockett), 2010 Southland Freshman of the Year (Dalton) and five Freshman All-Americans — Crew (2003), Rockett (2006), Palincsar (2007), Dalton (2010) and Good (2011). Twenty-four Roadrunners have gone on to play professionally, including 14 who have been selected in the Major League Draft. In fact, at least two players have been chosen in four of the past seven drafts and a total of 11 overall. In 2002, Schramek became the first player in school history to be selected in the first round when he was the 40th overall selection by the Cincinnati Reds. Corbett is one of 15 active NCAA Division I head coaches that are MLB alums.
