Trans[port]: Logistics Market MArch 2 Project Trans[port]: logistics market is a hybrid design project that collides warehouse logic with retail markets and goods consumption. Since 2017, the Port of Antwerp has increased its perishables facilities to improve its relations with Latin America. However, there is still a lack of cold store and warehouse facilities on the port front.

Trans[port] offers a high-tech on-port distribution solution whilst building a public connection between the city and the port. The building has two functions; one explores the distribution, packing and storing of goods, and the other expresses the buying, selling and consuming of goods.

Retail markets and restaurants aim to emphasise the disconnect between consumers and the distribution of goods by bringing people into an earlier stage of the logistics process. This creates a duality of experiences as one may eat in the restaurant while watching goods being delivered.

This logic developed from the understanding that goods often arrive in supermarkets days after delivery to the port, consequently reducing the quality of goods. Rather than goods being transported around Europe, consumers can come to receive and eat their goods on-site.

These contrasting building functions are expressed through the design strategy and changing geometries. Through analysis and abstraction of mechanical movements, the project explores systems of micro and macro movements within the distribution of goods. The project aims to abstract the two building functions by mediating spaces through overlapping rotated forms and clashing geometries.

Goods packed Pallets are broken down into punnets, moved through conveyor belts for a series of checks, and then packed. Goods are then stored back in their pallets.

Market supply Some of the packed goods will supply the food markets via conveyor belts. These foods will be sold to visitors and consumed on-site.

designed to be reused Reuse While the structural properties of steel were a crucial factor in the choice of steel, this building has been designed with components that can be dismantled and reused for a future warehouse structure. The inherent reusability of steel enables the project’s materials to be preserved and saves future resources and carbon emissions.

How can it be reused?

In this case, the dismantled steel structure can be re-erected for a future warehouse at the port. In the surrounding port terminals and storage plots, there is plenty of opportunity for a future steel-structured warehouse.

Local material availability Sourcing steel components from local manufacturers reduces emissions and energy use. It was vital to use local steel manufacturers that were accessible via the water for speedy transportation, shorter travel distances and more sustainable delivery of materials.

Designing for deconstruction The steel components have been standardised to enable the reuse and relocation of a future steel structure. Such components can be used as the same or different configurations in different locations. Designing steel structures for reuse reduces carbon emissions and material waste.

Sets in Motion:

Architecture & the spatial arts of cinema MArch 1 Project Sets in Motion explores vision through framing and the picturesque nature of the Alexandra Palace Park landscape. A body of research in cinema has led me to propose an independent filmmaker facility where the architecture and landscape become a backdrop for content. A series of points of view site mappings creates a drawing system that guides the proposal and creates pockets of solid and void. The proposal utilises the level change of the park by being integrated into the slope and maintains views over the panorama. It was key to celebrate the park’s community and provide a facility that is fully accessible from all areas of the landscape. The facility allows independent filmmakers to take the entire process of producing a film, from planning to marketing.

The Horse in Motion Eadweard Muybridge

In 1872, Muybridge undertook a study for Leland Stanford, a racehorse owner, to understand the physiology of a horses movement to inform horse training programs.

By 1877, first in San Francisco and then at Stanfords Palo Alto stock farm, Muybridge refined a method of study by the use of instantaneous photography. In order to capture the movement of the horse, a series of cameras were set up and trip wires were used to trigger their shutters. As the horse galloped, it tripped the wires and caused a sequence of images to be captured. The published images, when laid out chronologically, created a stop-motion type animation and was the first ever moving image.

Alexandra Palace

Picturesque nature of the landscape The site, Alexandra palace is located in North London and is known for being the birthplace of television.

Alexandra Palace, also known as Ally Pally, was confirmed as a new site for television production due to its ground height from sea level, 306 meters to be exact. In 1935, BBC leased the east area of the building to broadcast the first television transmission and continued to be a major production centre for BBC television till the late 1950s.

BBC tower and transmitter mast Television masts are used for terrestrial television broadcasting and uses radio waves that carry a video signal, representing moving images and received by television receivers. These masts require height and need to be 600 feet above sea level which makes Alexandra Palace the perfect location due to it being situated on top of a hill.

There are multiple points of access to the film studios from the landscape due to the step terrace design. This also creates platforms to view the landscape and panorama of the city.

These terraces can act as filming platforms for indepdendent filmamkers that can utilise the panorama as a backdrop.

The series of steps that make their way up the landscape has been designed to create pockets of gardens, paving and water. The stairs become more solid the closer it gets to the step terraces and act as points for views that look up and down the landscape.

I have utilised the Alexandra Palace terrace as an opportunity for a community space to enjoy the views over the panorama. This is the highest point of the project and has main access roads running past. Due to this being a main access road, I have altered the road layout to make it pedestrianised so the space can extend slightly into the road and can facilitate part of the road as outdoor seating space.

As the section demonstrates, there is a terrace system that allows for linked indoor and outdoor spaces to be accessed from multiple levels. This terrace system is built into the landscape to maintain the views over the panorama without disturbance.

Irrational Matrix: Using Daniel Libeskind to question the role of drawing in architectural representation.

MArch 2 Dissertation In my dissertation, I aim to study both Chamber works and Micromegas as drawings that push the role of representation in architectural drawing. These drawings have sparked intriguing discussions amongst commentators due to how they oppose the conventions of an architectural drawing of the time. While Chamber Works provides an overarching narrative regarding the connection between architecture and music, Micromegas explore fluctuating form and space. By referring to the descriptions and analogies made by Libeskind and by making an account of some of the more significant critics to have commented on his work, I aim to dissect the drawing works that made him a leading avantgarde figure in architecture.

The Sequel Final Year BA(hons) Project The two-part series begins with the Sequence that explores and analyses movement in Digbeth, Birmingham and continues research in film theory by monitoring speed, direction and time through film and key-framing.

The Sequel resolves fields of movement exploration in response to the social challenge and stigma towards ex-convicts. Grounded by design exploration, the thesis investigates how we can use film framing and sequences of spaces to speed up or slow down the rate at which ex-convicts reform.

A metaphorical timeline anchors the construct in forming a monument that tells the story of the ex-convict in their first 12 months of rehabilitation. The building utilises my exploration to create a journey that widens, narrows, diverts, meanders, opens, and closes, demonstrating the confusing path ex-convicts take in adjusting to society. An intricate sequence and module formation create slits that portray the contrast between light and dark, with concrete acting as a canvas to add to the internal experience, emphasising the dark mental and physical journey, ex-convicts take. Using film as a critical method of graphic communication, the thesis is a unique film experience of the life of those oppressed by society.

The Sequel: Post Production

Final Year BA(hons) Project

The post-production portfolio is a collection of visualisations of the proposed project. The visualisations highlight the harsh shadows and contrast between light and dark. The concrete becomes a canvas for the shadows to be celebrated. As you go through the rehabilitation process, the spaces become larger with wider gaps to let more light in.
