mother encouraged him to ‘do something sensible,’ and so he became a banker. After travelling the globe with EY, working in management for a Private Bank (MeesPierson), Bart broke into the entrepreneurial scene when the circumstances opened. He went on to create, build and sell a global financial business (Vistra Group). Then he started the cycle all over again with ZEDRA. His business acumen led him to be chosen as a Dragon on the Belgium equivalent of Dragon’s Den - ‘De Leeuwenkuil’.

Working in the private investment fields, Bart Deconinck lived in the Caribbean, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. With such a comfortable life, why would one opt to become an entrepreneur?

“I always had this urge to do something myself and you often need an external element.” For Bart, that push came in 2005 when the CEO of his bank changed. “People often say that you don’t stay with a business for the company but for the boss. I got a different boss. I got so upset that I left.”

That was the trigger for Bart to start Vistra Group with a friend.

The business idea flowed from his area of expertise in the bank: helping companies and families to invest, expand and migrate abroad.

“I still remember, we started with two people. We bought a laptop and copy machine, and rented

a small 10m2 Regus office in Geneva.” Vistra soon expanded to 30 countries, employing 5000 people today.

So how does one expand with a professional services company?

“You find good people to bring in the business, do the right marketing and treat your employees well. Most of our employees also became shareholders. That way we aligned our interests and motivated people. After ten years, the company became number three in the sector worldwide.”

But there are always things to learn. Deconinck learnt to trust his gut and not his heart.

“There are always mistakes. One mistake was to start in a certain country where I felt that the circumstances were not right but I pushed through anyway. It’s actually my country, Belgium.

I got emotionally involved but the business case was not there.

Never get too emotional. Always analyse your business case.”

Bart also advises scrupulous investment when hiring people.

“Don’t settle for less just because you want to move quickly.” How does one even know how to define the right profile for hiring?

“Any business starts from what a client precisely needs and wants.”

As Vistra grew, they secured additional private equity after a couple of years.

“But inevitably this brought a short term focus into the way one

manages the business. At a certain point the private equity firm wanted to sell. We had already been grooming next generation management team. We sold in 2015 and I stepped aside.”

Bart realised that his skill lay not in leading big businesses, but creating businesses from scratch.

The Break-up of Big Businesses?

When it comes to big business, Bart thinks the Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) should be split up. In fact, he thinks this should apply to all big companies, theoretically, including tech behemoths like Amazon or Google.

“I’m a very free market person, a pure capitalist. But the free market means that you have enough suppliers for the clients.

But we are creating businesses today that are so big that the consumer of the service does not have enough choice.

“Having said that, the problem is that we, the US or Europe, could do this [break up the big companies] but I don’t see the Chinese doing that. So the biggest argument against this, is if the Chinese are not going to do it with their Huawei’s and other businesses.”

And what is China like as a market to base one’s company in?

“We’re based in Hong Kong. We had several presences in China with my previous company.

China is not an easy market.

There are several ownership restrictions. Obviously the Chinese can buy almost anything they want in Europe. It’s difficult the other way around - to establish a presence there. The competition is very hard. The margins are much lower there.

Having said that, in Hong Kong we do good business but Hong Kong has also changed a lot over the years. It’s still a great place to do business but over the last 20 years it has changed in a very gradual but very distinct way, when it comes to human rights.”

From Vistra to ZEDRA

When Bart sold Vistra Group in 2015, he took a short break… before a friend called. Together, they bought the fiduciary business of Barclays bank three years ago: 250 people in 6 countries. Now the organisation staffs 600 people in 13 countries.

Bart says they’re not in a hurry, but are taking their time to develop the company.

What drives him to keep working like this?

“You have to do things. What am I going to do? I don’t play golf. I have young children - I have to stay active. I think with entrepreneurs, money is the output, the end result. It’s the

drive, the joy, the positive spin-off you get like creating employment.

I’m proud to say that I’ve created a couple of thousand jobs in my life. Isn’t that great? That’s why we need more entrepreneurs.”

Bart and his wife also give back to social causes. They are on the committee for Human Rights Watch, working especially for gender and gay rights.

Returning to his DJ days, he and his wife also sponsor new talent at the Montreux Jazz Festival to get one day on the main stage.

Lions Den 80% Personality

From business success to fame on Belgium’s ‘De Leeuwenkuil’: “You basically have 80 pitches in 8 days. Out of these, 30 to 35 get onto the screen in 8 episodes. It’s intense: 8am to 8pm, with no information beforehand. Someone makes a pitch, you ask questions. Then you make a decision. You might ask how do we make a decision.

I think 80% is personality. So you can ask all the financial questions in the world but you are triggered by personality.”

And with that, Bart was off to Hong Kong where one of his children had an internship.

What a great place to get work experience, I say! Not so hard, he replies… it’s my company.

T

he business world relies on innovation and entrepreneurial spirit – and nowhere is this fusion better demonstrated than in the partnerships that are being harnessed and developed at Tomorrow Street in Vodafone’s headquarters in Luxembourg.

One of the companies benefiting from the unique global innovation accelerator is Vizibl, the tech startup brainchild of Mark Perera and co-founder Alex Short.

Vizibl’s cloud-based software solutions offer organisations the opportunity to build deeper and more valuable relationships with their partners and suppliers – helping businesses to drive innovation from the extended enterprise and execute effectively. The platform provided by Tomorrow Street is helping to open up a whole new world of opportunity.

“Corporates are starting to realise that small startups can innovate quickly and that if you bring them into your environment, they can not only help your business but can also, potentially, drive greater growth,” says Short. “Vodafone doesn’t build technology – we do, that’s our expertise. We don’t try and build networks.

for them and they’re doing the same for us. At its core it’s true supplier innovation and collaboration in action.”

Working out of an office in Luxembourg on the Vodafone site means that Vizibl have a presence on the ground in every sense.

Their proximity to key figures within the Vodafone procurement organisation and other suppliers working under the Tomorrow Street umbrella provides a priceless backdrop for everything Vizibl is attempting to achieve.

“Having an office in Luxembourg means we have a shared environment and can sit down with the Vodafone and the Tomorrow Street team, to really connect together, and work within the Vodafone environment,” says Short. “It provides us with a platform to get heads together and make sure that our plans really work.”

While the project has had some initial teething problems – inevitable when you consider the scale of Vodafone’s ambitions – Short believes that Tomorrow Street is already delivering when it comes to ensuring that Vizibl’s presence within Vodafone is expanding at a rapid rate.

the company,” says Short. “Navigating through a corporate like Vodafone or any corporate for that matter is still a challenging thing to do.”

“Large companies are complicated. However, what we’re seeing is a programme whereby Tomorrow Street are really helping us to navigate our way through the organisation. We’re now getting to the right stakeholders and mapping out that programme for growth.”

“The reason Vodafone is pioneering this project is that they see Vizibl as a great innovation for their procurement and for their Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) strategy,” says Short.

“It means they have one view of their strategic suppliers on the dashboard, so it covers everything you would want to know about those suppliers and help you to work with them to drive innovation.”

A fundamental element of the Tomorrow Street project is Vodafone’s Arch summit, which took place last month in Luxembourg. Bringing together some of the leading figures in the world of supplier innovation, the event aims to bridge the gap between startups and corporates – providing another priceless platform for companies like Vizibl to bring their offering to the largest and most influential audience possible.

“Arch is a two day event – it’s about bringing startups, Vodafone and its suppliers together with investors,” says Short.

“You have a melting pot. You have suppliers who could be our potential customers. You also have the opportunity to sit down with the heads of procurement from key companies and have a conversation about them buying our technology in

the future, all under the umbrella of this Vodafone event. That has been amazing, the Arch event has had a hugely positive impact.”

This is another illustration of Tomorrow Street being very much a two-way process – and also demonstrates Luxembourg’s commitment to creating a technology hub that can benefit all companies, big and small.

The Luxembourg government is a key stakeholder in the whole process and has a direct interest in this kind of project being a success.

“Tomorrow Street is a joint collaboration and the government see it as a way of bringing tech startups from countries like the UK to Luxembourg and also helping companies like ourselves grow and reach maturity,” says Short. “We have committed to putting a number of resources down in Luxembourg and we’re all targeting revenue together – revenues that we can bring to the country. “ A win-win. And thanks to Tomorrow Street, the prospects for startups in Luxembourg have rarely been higher.

How could this variation of the world’s most popular airliner have such a catastrophic design flaw, and is this evidence of a dangerous trend of relying too heavily on automation?

The FAA issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive which instructed Boeing to update its manuals and provide instructions for avoiding the same errors which caused the Lion Air crash.

Many airlines also grounded their fleets of MAX 8s, despite President’s Trump’s reluctance to suggest the move. However,

just a few short months later, the aviation industry was rocked by another fatal crash, this time in Ethiopia. Once again, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 was at the centre of the crash. Killing 157 people, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 is reported to have crashed under similar circumstances to those experienced on Lion Air Flight 610.

Can We Trust Automation?

Automation has been a key component in the development of Boeing’s entire catalogue of aircraft for many years now. In fact, automation is applauded for having made aviation safer than

ever before. In other industries, automation is heralded as the silver bullet to overcome the human error factor in everything from manufacturing to transport and logistics. It’s been responsible for speeding up complex analytical processes, offering 24/7 customer support, and reducing operating costs for countless businesses. But was automation the culprit in the recent Boeing 737 disasters?

The answer to that question is still being debated amongst experts and throughout the press.

One thing’s for certain: Had the pilots in either crash been aware of the potentially faulty sensor readings and been made aware of the existence of the MCAS, they would likely have been able to correct the issue and avoid the fatal consequences. Whilst the automation of the planes’ operating systems seems to have been the direct cause of the

crashes, the lack of understanding of the pilots was perhaps the most critical issue in both instances.

It seems that without a doubt, pilot education and a greater degree of transparency from Boeing are critical, going forward.

Automation Cannot Replace the Human Component

Today, most commercial planes have automated systems which manage power, speed, navigation and even landing. In fact, in an exposé by The Telegraph in 2015 (iii), pilots confessed that the autopilot systems do up to 90% of the work, meaning that pilots may spend as little as 3 minutes in manual control of the plane. Given the many thousands of commercial flights taking off around the globe daily, it’s safe to say that automation is by and large a safe and even safety-enhancing part of modern aviation.

The trouble seems to arise when pilots are unfamiliar with how to solve issues with automated systems when they arise. An unfortunate side effect of widespread automation is that pilots - and by extension, machinery operators across all industries – can become almost complacent, and are at the very least, poorly prepared for the event of a systems failure.

However, if the recent Boeing crashes have taught us one thing, it is that automation is not fail-safe.

When it comes to putting lives on the line, there is no avoiding the fact that human intervention must always be possible, and furthermore, training must be rigorous and thorough.

There seems to be no stopping the forward march of automation, and despite the tragic recent events, pilots and industry players still widely support its use in the aviation industry. It seems that the focus instead will be on greater transparency from manufacturers and more intensive and regular training of pilots.

Particularly gold and diamonds have long been mined and treated under extremely stringent conditions. “How ethical is your gold?� is becoming a common question among high-end consumers as

they are getting more conscious of the ethical and environmental factors. Because buyers are demanding to know the origin of their treasures, some jewellers are ensuring they use responsibly sourced, eco-friendly or recycled methods.

Farfetch’s Store of the Future is a good example of what is possible. The luxury retail fashion store features tools such as automatic visual recognition as the shopper enters, RFID-enabled racks to boost inventory management and digital mirrors that allow customers to compare combinations of different sizes, colors and styles.

Using AI, the company has been able to integrate many of the experiences routinely offered to online customers.

Blockchain technology helps manufacturers and designers protect their brands against fraudulent copies. For each fashion item, its origin and ownership can be traced all the way to its original source. With the use of blockchain, fake products can be easily identified because they will

not have an authentic chain of records. In 2017, Babyghost a young Chinese-New York label teamed up with technology providers to allow everyone in the supply chain, including customers, to confirm the authenticity of its clothing. The company embedded small chips inside their clothing and accessories that anyone could scan to determine if the garment was authentic.

Contactless shopping helps to make the checkout process seamless, efficient and convenient by eliminating hassles like long checkout lines.

Zara has introduced self-checkout stations at their new 65,000-squarefoot store in Madrid, its largest store in the world. Meanwhile, Rebecca Minkoff’s flagship store in New

York lets customers buy anything from $200 handbags to $1,500 jackets on their own, without dealing with sales staff.

Shopping Apps changing the way consumers purchase. Apps provide information about stock, alerts customers about offers and works to understand buying behaviour. With Big Data analytics on the rise, retailers can figure out what is in high demand and even personalize the app to the individual customer interests.

For example, Zalando provides an app that features intuitive navigation, autosuggest search and a wish list that syncs across devices. One of the highlights is the Photo Search function — an image recognition function integrated in the Zalando app that shows similar products based on a photo. The app also provides additional features such as the Zalando Barcode Scanner and the option of viewing products and brands you have recently searched for.

Interactive Dressing Rooms Major retailers such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and others are incorporating interactive technology in their flagship stores. An interactive mirror is set up in the trial rooms

or fitting areas where shoppers get to analyse a 360-degree view of the outfit they are trying.

It allows them to compare other outfits of similar designs or colours at the same time.

Additionally customers can send a video to friends to get a second opinion. Shoppers have the freedom to ask for a different size or colour right from the dressing room. Resulting in saving time and increasing customer satisfaction.

Smart Connected Clothing

The evolving wearable industry is growing at an unprecedented rate, driven largely by improved technologies, new applications, and lower costs. Currently, the smart connected clothing industry is largely dominated by fitness products; smart belts that track a person’s expanding waistlines and step count, smart bras that measure heart rate and breathing and even a smart shirt that provides GPS directions through vibrating sections built into each shoulder.

A current example would be Google‘s recent collaboration with LEVI’S® that launched a smart jacket named Jackquard which is fully equipped with Maps and Spotify integration.

Sustainable Fashion

Fashion designers and brands are now utilizing technology to create new, environmentally conscious clothing.

Designers such as Stella McCarthy, Eileen Fisher and Ralf Lauren are attempting to reshape industry practices by using organic textiles and reducing water and carbon waste.

Another example is the denim brand LEVI’S® that have started dissolving old clothes to create a new fibre in their jeans, which is an alternative to water-intensive cotton production.

Future of Fashion

With the implementation of the different technologies in fashion, there is a huge scope for clothing brands to invent unique styles and offering new variety. Trendy and chic times are ahead, and we can not wait for them to unravel.

A performance running shoe made to be remade In the previous article, we lightly touched the topic of sustainable fashion. We looked at exciting consumer trends, new technologies and innovative business models helping to lead the future of fashion down a more sustainable path.

Recently Adidas launched a revolutionary product, which makes the shoe 100% recyclable. It is ‘made to be remade’; closing the production cycle. It is the pinnacle innovation story: high-performance running shoes that you do not have to throw away.

Inspiring regardless of industry.

Introducing the Future

Together with Parley for the Oceans, Adidas introduced in 2015 the first performance footwear concept with an upper made entirely of yarns and filaments reclaimed and recycled from marine plastic waste and illegal deep-sea gillnets. This year, the focus will shift to producing 11 million pairs of shoes containing recycled ocean plastic from plastic waste on beaches, remote islands and in coastal communities. The brand is committed to using only recycled materials in every product and on every application where a solution exists by 2024.

The FUTURECRAFT.LOOP project is aimed at tackling the problem of plastic waste, enabling a “closed loop” or circular manufacturing model, where the raw materials can be repurposed again and again. But not just repurposed into a water bottle or a tote, but into another pair of high-performance running shoes.

How Does it Work?

Sports footwear typically includes complex material mixes and component gluing - resulting in a shoe which can only be down cycled. After close to a decade of research and development alongside leading material development, manufacturing and recycling partners across Asia, Europe and North America, Adidas has found a way to change the process.

“Taking plastic waste out of the system is the first step, but we can’t stop there,” said Eric Liedtke, Executive Board Member at Adidas, responsible for Global Brands. “What happens to your shoes after you’ve worn them out? You throw them away – except there is no away. There are only landfills and incinerators and ultimately an atmosphere choked with excess carbon, or oceans filled with plastic waste. The next step is to end the concept of “waste” entirely. Our dream is that you can keep wearing the same shoes over and over again.”

Each component is made from 100% reusable TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) - it’s spun to yarn, knitted, moulded and clean-fused to a BOOST midsole using Adidas SPEEDFACTORY technology.

Once the shoes come to the end of their first life and are returned to Adidas – they are washed, ground to pellets and melted into material for components for a new pair of shoes, with zero waste and nothing thrown away. Each generation is designed to meet the Adidas sports performance standard, without compromise.

The insights will be used to shape the roadmap for the wider release targeted for Spring Summer 2021.

Arch Summit 2019 Connecting Leaders of Tomorrow with Global Tech Giants Written by Marisa Rodrigues At this year’s Arch Summit, hosted in Luxembourg, there were many conversations focused around the human side of technology. During Warrick Cramer, CEO of Tomorrow Street’s speech, we were reminded that it is the human element, not the technology itself that drives social, environmental, and scientific change. It is how people use technology for good or evil, and the mistakes we make, that affects the final outcome. In order to make positive change through technology, as leaders we have a responsibility to educate the next generation on how to use technology responsibly.

Summary Report

The annual two-day event hosted various panellists including a number of prominent executives from the tech industry, government officials, startups, and investors that discussed various topics like 5G, AI, IoT, Security, Mobility etc. A diverse range of keynote speakers from organisations including Google, Accenture, Dell, Amazon, Battery Ventures, Vodafone Group etc., Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel, Deputy Prime Etienne Schneider and the inspiring Nobel Peace Prize Winner – Leymah Gbowee.

The summit was attended by more than 5000 participants, spanning over 50 countries and addressed by 30 speakers. Among the attendees were 200 startups, over 90 global tech giants, 100 tech investors and 800 C-level representatives from Vodafone worldwide.

Additionally, the Summit welcomed celebrity venture capitalists from the hit TV show “Dragon’s Den” - Jenny Campbell (UK), Frank Thelen (Germany) and Bart Deconinck (Belguim). Across the two-days, they interacted with startups, networked with corporates and used their expertise to judge the final startup competition rounds.

Social Impact was one of the main focus at Arch Summit enabling startups with life-changing solutions a way to reach key decision makers.

As part of this, 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist, social worker, and women’s rights advocate joined the summit as a keynote speaker and judge for the competitions.

Across the two days at Arch, around 150 innovative tech startups pitched their business solutions to a panel of judges ranging from investors, accelerators, innovation leads and senior executives from global corporate companies. The winners of the competition were given the choice of €100,000 as a cash prize or a work order of the same value with Vodafone.

Winner of the FutureTech Competition The Future Tech Prize was awarded to Hotailors – a business travel startup that uses AI to make corporate travel booking faster and cheaper. Success Stories: Startups

This year Arch Summit generated over 1700 meetings via matchmaking app Brella and thousands more ad hoc at the event. Startups – Crashtest Security and PayKey shared their experience across the two day at Arch.

Crashtest Security Crashtest Security were one of the startups that presented their solutions to attendees at the event and participated in the FutureTech competition.

Based in Munich, Germany, the business is working to provide transparency and measurement for the security of web applications and APIs. Jan Wiederrecht - Business Development & Customer

Success at Crashtest Security shared that Arch Summit 2019 was very successful for Crashtest Security. More than 60 new contacts were made ranging from corporate Vodafone partners to attending startups. 20 contacts were made exclusively with Vodafone, and the Crashtest Security booth had tons of traffic.

In fact, more than 30 security scans were executed directly at the booth and sent to requestors.

PayKey Paykey based in Tel Aviv, Israel also joined Arch Summit this year for the first time. The technology allows users to make secure P2P payment while still in any messaging app where the phone’s keyboard is used.

Paykey presence at Arch 2019 led to more than 20 relevant leads created with Vodafone’s global procurement and regional territories. The booth’s prescene also allowed PayKey to pitch to relevant leads.

Arch Summit Interview Reflections Written by Lisa Burke The Arch Summit 2019 was a light year leap from its inception last year. Here are some of my few takeaways from this year’s exciting event.

Warrick Cramer, CEO of Tomorrow Street and founder of the Arch Summit, opened the event with a focus on how we keep human ethics at the core of fast-paced tech development.

Dr. Jamshid Vayghan, CTO of IBM Global echoed this thought when we spoke in the Media Booth: “How should we leverage AI abilities to help business and potentially augment human life?

Typically the technology moves rapidly and then we ask, ‘What can we do with it?’ Now most of the industry leaders say the government needs to take control. It’s time to have a serious conversation.

Make sure we are doing the right thing, the right way for everyone.”

As for Jamshid’s view of the future: “In the next five years I think, firstly, cloud computing will be a big accelerator to everything.

Secondly, AI - we need to solve some of the basic problems. Most is based on the data but there’s so many issues with the data. Thirdly, the future of telecommunication, 5G and application of the cloud into telecoms.

Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, brought the house to tears, as she spoke about the female non-violent movement during the Liberian Civil War, her pan-African work and the Gbowee Peace Foundation.

What does it take to be a great leader, I asked, since it seemed to come so naturally to her?

Jenny Campbell, British entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den judge, gave this piece of advice to those present: “Startups: this is a massive opportunity. Build, get ready to exit and sell up to the corporate.

Corporates: I know how hard it is to do innovation in a corporate environment, so get scouting, because if you don’t buy them someone else will.”

Johan Wibergh, CTO of Vodafone, told me about their near future ambitions: “The goal is to change the digital interaction with customers. More is being moved from stores to be done digitally online, on the web, an app on phone or with an AI chatbot.

We measure the customer experience. When it started it was negative and now it’s very positive. This does depend on your age, but overall the internet experience is winning.”

David Roland, from Google Cloud Platform Ventures, was looking for the next start-ups to invest in!

Georgia Paphiti, a CFO in the banking industry, told me about the family expectations of her to stay at home and have a family in Cyprus. She wanted to do

both and ended up in banking industry. Now she has four children and explains that it is a matter of priorities.

David Hill Shares the Company’s First Success with Vodafone Written by Marisa Rodrigues

B Networks was the first company to join Tomorrow Street after its launch. The company is an American-based startup from Missouri that provides an innovative analytics platform called OcularIP, enabling companies across all industries to gain visibility of their entire network and digital infrastructure. Currently OcularIP enables over 120 Carriers and Enterprises with e2e performance visibility, analytics and reporting on their network services, owned or leased.

LB Network’s innovative nature of the platform, strong management team, and product scalability helped them secure a place at Tomorrow Street. After working with Tomorrow Street in Luxembourg for a year, David chats about the journey so far.

What made LB Networks join Tomorrow Street?

Tomorrow Street was looking for “mature startups” that deliver solutions, which align with Vodafone’s digital transformation directives for improving customer experience. In addition, the solutions must meet their high standards. The benefits provided

by OcularIP, LB Networks flagship offering, aligned with Vodafone’s requirements. The challenge was how we could successfully present a solution to Vodafone.

The Tomorrow Street provided an avenue to OcularIP for

After extensive evaluation, LB Networks/OcularIP was presented the opportunity to join the Tomorrow Street team and ever since has been assisting LB Networks across the Vodafone spectrum.

Vodafone is one of the carriers that sets industry directions.

Getting the right level of attention and then completing Vodafone’s rigorous evaluation process is really challenging for new innovative companies like LB Networks. The Tomorrow

Street team was instrumental in assisting LB Networks in presenting OcularIP’s business benefits, performing the evaluations, keeping the projects on track, and providing introductions to Vodafone’s senior leadership teams within both Group and Opcos. The experience has been exciting, challenging, hard work and ultimately rewarding.

LB Networks has been present at both the editions of Arch Summit, what has been your experience so far? Has it helped you and the team get connected?

A lot of interest in OcularIP was generated at Arch this year and we have several follow-up programmes already underway. Thanks to Arch Summit and the Tomorrow Street team, we also had the chance to review current plans with executive leadership teams within both Vodafone corporate and the Opcos.

These lines of communication are key to ensure success as we launch OcularIP in specific markets, and initiate projects for new markets.

In addition to Vodafone, we were introduced to a number of carriers involved in the Partnership Program and Arch provided us access to strategic Tomorrow Street partners who want to leverage OcularIP’s digital carrier compliance capabilities.

WARRICK CRAMER DETERMINED TO MAKE A CHANGE Warrick Cramer had never worked for anyone else before becoming CEO of Tomorrow Street. He had never run an event in his life, before founding the Arch Summit. From life as a serial entrepreneur, to creating waves of success to envelop others, that’s him.

adiating warmth and success, Warrick is a man who made it early in life and seemed destined to do so.

He oozes charm and knows his worth but remains modest, with a laser sharp focus.

Cramer’s conversation flows easily, veering from raising a teenage daughter to his concerns about the algorithms which lie behind AI datasets and ethics in the tech world-to-come.

His sense of purpose is to help others achieve - to ‘pay it forward’. And after four and a half years here in Luxembourg, he is returning to Australia, to his family, having left the Cramer stamp on the entrepreneurial heart of Luxembourg and so many people.

Everyone Contributes, Everyone Counts

Warrick grew up in Melbourne, Australia, where his parents ran a chain of clothing stores.

From this time, two lessons

were absorbed: a penchant for perfectly crafted suits, (he’s rarely seen looking less than perfectly groomed), and the need to understand every aspect of your business.

“Everyone contributes. Everyone counts. It’s important to value people.”

From his parents’ business, he knew that they, and in turn he, learnt every role in the chain.

This respect for every part of the cycle transfers to his respect for everyone he meets. Cramer fundamentally understands the intricacies and interlinking of people and their work. He understands the need for the overview of all aspects.

Tomorrow Street

From his early teenage years, Warrick was an entrepreneur.

He consequently learnt the hardest potholes to cross on the entrepreneurial path. When the Vodafone Procurement Company and the Government of

Luxembourg asked him to create the Tomorrow Street Innovation Centre, he knew what was needed and took on the challenge.

The combination of a global procurement centre with direct access to the Luxembourg Government gave Cramer great ballast and resources to mould and influence part of the burgeoning start-up scene here in Luxembourg.

Tomorrow Street sits atop Vodafone’s headquarters in Kirchberg, with its fern-lined coffee bar, communal working spaces and meeting rooms, ranging from Arabian themed ‘tents’ to the stars at night; the décor another mark of Cramer’s radar attention to detail. The selection process means that only late-stage entrepreneurs will make it through the net, so despite available space, selection is meaningful.

Entrepreneurs Need Relationship Capital

Tomorrow Street does two things, above all. It plugs start-ups into an environment with other entrepreneurs, and it provides access to a network of corporates and decision makers; a fast-track to growth. The two worlds meld in a space where they can speak the same language.

“As an entrepreneur, the capital you invest in is people.

Entrepreneurs don’t have all the answers or resources to do everything alone so you learn from others. I rely on my network to teach me.”

Trust you have the right people around you. Ensure your network and circle are big enough to have someone to ask.”

And that’s exactly why he decided to create The Arch Summit – to create a space where entrepreneurs, corporates and venture capitalists could meet each other.

“I’ve never run an event in my life” This is a minor concern to Warrick, who is undeterred by a

Then, he turned to his own network to learn and built the right team.

His enthusiasm is such that it’s never a burden to want to work the extra hours to ensure his ideas work. Because his ideas are beyond himself, to help so many others.

Cramer admits that he doesn’t get it right all the time. He can be obsessively persistent.

But he always uses these experiences as a time for selfreflection and resilience-building.

“Why did that happen? Well, my message was probably not clear enough.”

Keeping a sense of the big picture is ever-present. Cramer knows that much of the work he does is not life threatening.

“I’m not holding someone’s life in my hands. I’m not a surgeon. I shouldn’t be stressed if my event doesn’t go well. If people don’t show up, it’s ok. It’ll bruise my ego but that’s ok.”

Holding his greater purpose in mind, he can deal with almost any reactions.

“It’s all about me trying to help other people prosper and go forward.

Knowing that you’ll make a difference.”

When Warrick returns to his homeland, he hopes that Tomorrow Street and the Arch Summit will continue to thrive. He

FTI – Failure to Implement

To his staff at Tomorrow Street, Warrick has been the acme of inspiration and drive.

One of his key acronyms is FTI – Failure to Implement.

“Do it, then readjust.”

But God damn, just do it.

“Say yes, then you look at the back end. How are you going to implement it? Sometimes you don’t have all the answers but you can learn as you go.”

For this, many of us have to unlearn years of education: schools and universities, so frequently set up for just the opposite, where failure is not seen

as a step to fine-tuning and readjustment.

“Have confidence to go do things and take a leap of faith. Go for it. Don’t worry what others will think or say. People will come behind your idea.”

And for the Arch Summit, that, they definitely did.

Warrick Cramer leaves Luxembourg with a sense of accomplishment and legacy, for all who have met him.

rch Summit 2019 was honoured to present keynote speaker, Leymah Gbowee. An inspiring woman with a powerful story, Leymah won the Nobel Peace Prize after uniting Christian and Muslim women in a non-violent women’s movement that contributed to the end of a gruelling fourteen-year Liberian civil war.

Leymah fought to be heard, and now her voice is recognised as the epitome of strength, power and an agent of change. She

One of the lowest points in Leymah Gbowee’s life was when she was 25 years old. She found herself at one of the most difficult points in her life. She had recently left an abusive relationship, was living in a refugee camp and was struggling with debilitating depression. She was poor, extremely underweight, and holding her recently-born premature baby on the hospital’s floor - desperately waiting for medical care. She held her child close inside her dress, trying to keep him warm, because she couldn’t afford incubator care. As she did her best to take care of her

baby, passersby threw bread and coins. Much needed help finally arrived a week later, when the doctor came back and paid her bills and sent her home.

Yet even in the face of adversity, what made Leymah Gbowee powerful was her will to keep fighting.

“I refused to take the choice of being a victim. I choose to be a survivor, as someone who will step in this space and change my world.”

She decided never to be silent after a professor graded her unfairly because he believed she had nothing to share.

By tackling issues (both small and large) that stop accessibility to education and empowerment, Leymah Gbowee knows that the foundation can shape the future generation into becoming peacemakers, democracy builders and self-empowered leaders.

The organisation focuses on education, leadership and community development. After emerging from 14 years of civil conflict as one of the poorest countries in the world, it is no surprise that Liberia’s education system is still in crisis. By providing tutoring, networking and work placement services, youth have better opportunities to excel.

Projects span from simple changes that can make a lasting impactful difference, such as offering computer labs and printers - to large scale lifechanging educational changes like leadership training, sexual health and reproductive rights education. The foundation also aims to offer vocational courses in hard skills in carpentry, machinery, and heavy-duty driving and soft skills in

entrepreneurship, banking, finance, marketing establishing cooperatives.

One of the foundation’s most recent projects is to release a public health radio station. As Leymah Gbowee recognized, the reason that certain diseases spread quickly in parts of Africa is the lack of trust from the government. While the government might populate information on how to stay safe, residents do not trust it because histories of government corruption.

Therefore, to combat the lack of accessibility of trustworthy information, the foundation is creating a public health radio station to become a hub of accurate and trusted information for Liberia on issues such as health as well as community organizing. The foundation used Arch Summit as a platform to collaborate with global tech companies to help elevate this project and work towards accelerating its success.

This year alone, the foundation has raised over $1 million in

support of their education programs and has awarded more than 300 scholarships.

It’s clear to see that thanks to the organization, many women become empowered in education, their own civic engagement and financial independence to create a better future for themselves and their families.

It’s important to realize that all this change began through a choice. A choice to speak up and a choice to get involved.

Leymah Gbowee emphasizes the importance of remembering what drives all of our work - whether we work in technology or in advocacy. Her words impelled startups and tech companies at Arch Summit to remember the core of their technological developments -- humanity.

“We need to come together to make the world a brighter place, a better place, and to give hope in humanity that good can overcome evil. It is only by bridging our collective humanity and investing in people and investing in our world that we can enjoy all of this that we are creating.”

The programs include Bentley Skype for Business, virtual office applications that allow one to edit files on the go, hold vital video conferences and conduct meetings in a secure virtual environment. The new superfast WiFi service also creates endless possibilities for in-car entertainment with its ability to stream high-definition video across multiple devices with uninterrupted service quality.

Bentley partnered with the global communications company, Viasat, to provide customers with the world’s best and most in-car technology. Viasat is recognised internationally for managing 14 million WiFi hotspots spanning nearly 30 countries and for bringing satellite-enabled in-flight WiFi to major commercial and government aircrafts.

Bar Basso A visit to Milan is never truly complete without a drink at Bar Basso. An institution that’s been around since the 1940s, this place is just as popular amongst the older generations as the young, hip crowds who make Milan home for Fashion Week twice each year. Its signature special, the Negroni Spagliato (or ‘Wrong Negroni’) is practically infamous. Created - like so many great drinks - by accident, the Negroni Spagliato features Campari and sweet vermouth. The twist is a Prosecco inclusion, which replaces the gin you’d expect to find in a Negroni, and the concoction is served in a large glass with a single oversized ice cube.

Ugo Another of Navigli’s best bars (and there are plenty to choose from), Ugo has a timeless charm and elegance that belies its short history.

Opening in 2013, the bar quickly became a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike.

Entering the bar feels like coming to visit an eccentric, bohemian friend you never knew you had. Order a drink from the quirky Ugo’s Circus menu (we recommend The Strongman: red French vermouth, navy rum, overproof rum, sherry, cinnamon and bitters) and enjoy their divine aperitivo selection.

Top tip: Located in the quaint neighborhood of Navigli, Ugo is in the perfect location for a stroll along the beautiful canal to discover local stores.

N’Ombra de Vin

This is without a doubt one of the most remarkable bars in Milan. Set within an Augustinian Friars refectory dating back to the 1500s, the word ‘holy’ comes to mind when making your way to the bar under vaulted ceilings and ancient stone walls. Enjoy wine tastings all day, as well as a selection of tasty Italian morsels, or pop in for one of their regular live music events. Originally designed to cater to the most discerning of wine buyers, the owners have transformed this enoteca into a truly memorable venue, catering to all crowds from the fashion elite, to late-night dance partygoers, to couples looking for a romantic evening out. A melting pot of cultures with a rich history, this is one bar not to miss in Milan.

Where’s My Exit?

British Businesswoman Jenny Campbell Chooses Her Moves Carefully and Fearlessly Written by Lisa Burke

Jenny Campbell, after decades in a traditional banking career, turned entrepreneur. She founded YourCash Europe and sold it in October 2016 for £50 million. Her fame grew more generally when she appeared on Dragon’s Den in the UK from 2017-2019. As a business figurehead, she actively participates in enterprise charities, is the Vice Chair of the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Fellowship programme, and breeds Flat Coated Retrievers at champion level!

It was a week’s work experience in a bank which decided her future. Jenny chose to leave school at 16, start working in the local NatWest bank and continue her education during the evenings.

Nothing was unusual about this choice in her mind as her family was composed of business-minded bankers, builders and printers.

Jenny remained in banking for over 30 years, rising all the time. Her manifold roles included overseeing the integration of NatWest into the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

“I started at the bottom then ended up in a senior position in the City of London with the cash machine business.”

Elevating Yourself

There were key moments throughout the decades where Campbell took hold of her own future.

“In my mid-twenties, the bank told me my career prospects are X and I said no! My career prospects are Y and even Z.” The personnel department had sent her a letter saying ‘Dear Jenny, we’ve assessed your future career and we’ve assessed it as a Grade B’. Jenny’s ire was immediate.

“I remember looking at it and thinking, nobody talked to me about this, and last time I looked at the alphabet it didn’t begin with a B. I saw my young male colleague opposite – we did the same job. I honestly knew I was better than him, but he got a grade A. So there started some gritty determination.

I got re-graded an A.” Of course.

Jenny doesn’t like to dwell on being a female in a rather male world. She speaks often about not even noticing that she is the only female present in a boardroom. Partly it’s because she grew up in the middle of two brothers “hanging out of trees”.

“Don’t be fearful or even think about being in a male environment. We’re just all in this together.

Ladies, you’re only inhibited by yourself.”

And then she quotes one of her favourite mottos: “There’s no such thing as glass ceilings only sticky floors.”

When I press her on the point that even her own early days in banking demonstrate that those in charge can dictate one’s and Jenny Campbell future, that there has been a bias against women at times, Jenny admits that things are not changing fast enough.

From Corporate Banking to Cash Machines

Campbell moved from the corporate banking world in 2006, when she became Head of Operations for the failing Hanco cash machine business, making an annual loss of £7 million a year.

“One person’s challenge is another person’s opportunity. I’d done very important and fun work on the integration of the banks And then a [NatWest RBS] lightbulb went off – and from 2000 to 2006. In 2008, Jenny was instructed to sell the business.

But not knowing how to sell businesses, she learnt how to put external people around her whose job was to do these things.

“And then a lightbulb went off – why don’t we think about buying this.”

After a phone call to the boss, a bid from the management team, and a few other steps, Jenny Campbell became the only woman in the cash machine world.

The Revival of Entrepreneurship

Jenny is delighted to see the resurgence in entrepreneurship. However, she cautions one to have a fall back professional safety net and to consider being an entrepreneur a little later in life.

“The recession brought entrepreneurship back and it’s wonderful. I say to individuals, you won’t always succeed and it’s quite a lonely place to be at 18. It’s like being a premier league footballer – you’re not all going to make it. I think more young people should go into business to hone their skills, and then perhaps take an idea when they’re a little older and have a network of support. If you fail at 18 or 20 it could be quite soul destroying.”

Her grown-up sons followed their mum’s advice.

After gaining his accounting qualifications, her

eldest now runs three restaurants in London. And she is rightly proud.

Advice to Budding CEOs

Campbell believes that her success grew out of developing all-round skills.

“You need all-round business knowledge: sales, marketing, finance, operations. Then, fine tune what you are good at and recruit to fill in the places where you are not good. As a CEO you’re the general manager of the business and you need a general understanding of all aspects of the business.”

And how do you find good people?

“Network, recommendations, raise the quality bar. Coach people up or out. Always treat people fairly when you let them go. Rebuild. I would always interview people in the first tranches to make sure we had the right DNA in the business.

“

“I would always say look for attitude, train for skills. I want people with a cando attitude: work hard, play hard, but equally, when the tough times come, dig deep and give those extra hours.”

Investing

As a Dragon in the Den, Jenny knew to invest in something she likes and knows. And again it comes back to personality – who do you feel you could work with for the next 3-5 years?

Her banking head never leaves her: “I need to get in at the right price. I like a negotiation. But crucially, how do you get out?

Where’s my exit? I’m not going to be their banker for the next 10 years. The exit’s not always easy to see with small businesses.”

Jenny is tenacious as a business leader, dogged in her work ethic. But her Northern England sincerity underpins it all. Sheer hard work and self-belief, coupled with a great network of people, and her only time when she’s not thinking about business… the time spent with her Flat Coated Retrievers. “My dogs bring joy to my life.”

Jet lag is a fact of life for many travellers. Long-haul flights are often a necessary evil when it comes to vacationing or taking work trips abroad, and most of us have simply accepted that jet lag is an unavoidable risk.

However, thanks to new research from Qantas and Sydney University, we’ve picked up a few tips that could help you overcome your jet lag next time you head off overseas.

What is Jet Lag?

Jet lag, according to Steve Simpson (i), director of the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney, is an unavoidable and fundamental biological phenomenon. Enlisted by Qantas in 2018 to help it design an in-flight experience which would decrease the effects of jet lag, Simpson wants to be clear that there is no silver bullet.

Jet lag, also known as desynchronosis, is a physiological condition brought about by an interference with the body’s natural circadian rhythms. This happens when crossing time zones and has been found to be worse when crossing to the east than to the west. At worst, jet lag can cause headaches, migraines and disorientation, and at best, results in tiredness and disruption to normal sleep patterns.

Despite claims by Simpson that we can’t cure the condition entirely, his research has found that both airlines and travellers can do plenty to reduce its severity and overcome it more quickly.

Getting over Jet Lag: What Airlines Can Do

Changes in lighting Simpson suggests that cabin crew adjust the intensity and colour of the lighting to help passengers’ bodies synchronise with the conditions of their destination and its time zone. Effectively, this helps to trick the body into thinking it’s earlier or later, helping the body prepare for rest accordingly.

Food and meal times The types of food you eat, and when, can also play a role in causing jet lag. Airlines like Qantas started using ingredients that make it easier for passengers to sleep. Foods that include high levels of tryptophan and carbohydrates are ideal, as they help the body to produce melatonin and serotonin, both

of which are important for a restful sleep.

Eating three to four hours before it’s time to sleep is also advised, and so, Qantas has begun to shift meal times in-fight to ensure that passengers are ready for sleep at the most appropriate time.

What You Can Do

1.

Sleep times Of course, you want to sleep when you’re

tired, not when you’re being told you should.

However, to avoid jet lag, adjusting to the time zone of your destination is critical. Therefore, if you’re heading east, you should try to go to bed and wake up earlier for several days before your flight. If you’re heading west, you should do the opposite. This will bring you closer in alignment to your destination’s time zone and help you to avoid the dreaded sleepiness when you arrive. Also, once aboard your flight, take note of the time at your destination – not the time at your departure point – and try to delay sleep if necessary, to synchronise with your arrival time.

2.

Eat less protein and more carbohydrates It might not be the advice your dietician would give but eating lower levels of protein and higher levels of carbohydrates can help you to sleep more restfully. This is especially important on flights, when not only is it less comfortable to sleep, but you’re also trying to sleep at a time that feels unnatural to your body. The hormones produced when eating things like bread, rice and pasta can help you to drift off more easily, whilst proteins will only give you more energy. You should also avoid eating chilli and other hot foods.

Avoid alcohol and drink lots of water Avoiding a beer or wine with dinner might not sound like a lot of fun for your next long-haul flight, but it can mean the difference between severe jet lag and a mild case. Alcohol can increase the effects of jet lag, whilst drinking water to stay hydrated will help the body to cope with tiredness and disorientation. It might mean making a few more trips to the bathroom during your flight, but your body will thank you for it once you land.

best ways to ensure a good sleep, and so, should be used to help get you back into the swing of things at your destination.

To ensure that you’re able to sleep on your flight, try doing at least 30 minutes of exercise on the day of your departure.

Then, when you arrive, go for a brisk walk or even hit the gym. If you can hold off on sleeping until after 9pm at your destination, the workout will help you to sleep better and you’ll wake up feeling refreshed the next morning.

Be careful of naps If you absolutely cannot help but take a nap once you reach your destination, be careful to sleep for no longer than 90 minutes. Sleeping at all before bedtime is not a great idea and can increase the effects of jet lag, as your body will continue to have difficulty adjusting to the new time zone. However, by keeping your naps short, you will limit the damage. To help with that, expose yourself to bright natural light after waking up from your nap, and do some exercise during the day to help burn off that extra energy before bed.

Evolving Business Models

Research sponsored by NAGRA shows that MVPDs are transitioning from selling big channel bundles to retailing multiple smaller content packages, such as skinny bundles and direct-to-consumer services.

However, neither the existing pay-TV business model nor the contractual agreements with content owners were set up to support this transition.
