NOV 15 “Painting With Sound” chronicles a watershed event in the

history of music: the moment when the recording studio itself effectively became an instrument and gave rise to sounds that could never be reproduced live. This episode charts the evolution and sounds of multi-track recording.

PBS ARTS FALL FESTIVAL

TWO FAMILY FAVORITES GIVEN A HOLIDAY REBOOT

The PBS Arts Fall Festival continues Friday nights throughout November with guest host Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lincoln Center at the Movies presents “Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater” (November 4 at 9:00 PM). The New York-based modern dance company showcases its spectacular range, diversity and artistry, including the company’s signature work, “Revelations,” along with three other pieces. Great Performances presents Imelda Staunton as the indomitable Momma Rose in London’s hit revival of Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical “Gypsy” about stripper Gypsy Rose Lee’s rise to fame (November 11 at 8:30 PM). Get out your tissues and experience what The New York Times calls “an emotional firestorm” as award-winning television and Broadway star Alan Cumming brings down the house with his acclaimed cabaret show. “Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs” airs November 18 at 9:00 PM. Acclaimed pianist Lang Lang performs a love letter to New York in “Lang Lang’s New York Rhapsody” (November 25 at 9:00 PM), a Live From Lincoln Center special that features music from Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Danny Elfman, Lou Reed, Alicia Keys, Don Henley and others.

NATURE THE STORY OF CATS Cats have been revered since the dawn of civilization for their predatory power and enigmatic nature. The two-part series “The Story of Cats” journeys from rain forests to the savannah and the comfort of our homes to explore the evolutionary tricks and adaptations that make cats so unique. “Asia to Africa” (November 2) shows how the first cats arose in the forests of Asia and later spread across Africa. They evolved flexible limbs to climb, giant bodies to survive the cold, and super senses to catch prey. “Into the Americas” (November 9) shows how cats first crossed into North America and became the continent’s top predator. Brave wildcats in pursuit of mice moved into villages, evolving over time into domestic cats.

ADVENTURES IN THE OWYHEE DESERT The Owyhee Desert may look like a dry and desolate place, but beyond the endless sage are hidden gems: twisting waterways and narrow canyons with sheer walls and towering pinnacles. It’s some of the most remote country in the entire United States, a lonely landscape that only a handful of adventurous people visit each year. LOCAL PROGRAMING

Outdoor Idaho accompanies Stahl as he floats down one of the Owyhee River’s remote tributaries, Deep Creek. Camera crews also follow a group exploring the East Fork of the Owyhee in packrafts. This new sport combines hiking and ultra-lightweight rafts. In addition, crews embark on a canyoneering adventure in a secluded part of the desert few people have ever seen. It’s a challenging trip into a boulder-strewn slot canyon. “The Canyonlands are a very special place. It’s worth some hardship. There’s no other place like it,” says hiking guide Shane Moser. Join Outdoor Idaho for these and other “Owyhee Adventures,” airing November 17 and 20.

Channels Goes Back to the Future I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but we want to sincerely thank you all for your input on the new Channels layout.

Election Profiles: Lewiston

Christmastime in New Orleans. This festive

holiday special showcases the music, sights and acclaimed cuisine of New Orleans.

IDAHO

DEC 3 @ 5:00 PM

Idaho Reports profiles the city of Lewiston, the population center of District 6, to explore why the area produces such interesting legislative races. Then, Stephanie Witt of Boise State University and Dan Chadwick of the Idaho Association of Counties join Betsy Russell to discuss local taxes, economic development, and the privatization of lands.

Election Profiles: Gooding Idaho Reports profiles the city of Gooding in District 26 to discuss the dairy industry’s dominance in the area’s economy. Then, Rocky Barker of the Idaho Statesman joins Betsy Russell of the Spokesman-Review and Dr. Jim Weatherby to discuss rural economies, legislative races and HJR5.

As you probably noticed, we’ve gone “back to the future” with the programming grids. We heard loud and clear that you prefer them arranged by date and then channel, not the reverse. You shared other suggestions, too, and we were able to incorporate some of them. Some of them we just couldn’t fit into our new design. We hope you’ll understand. The IdahoPTV communications team is doing the best job they can weighing the time and resources it takes to assemble the magazine each month. It’s a tall order. We’re moving down our list of projects that will help us more efficiently reach you with news of IdahoPTV programming and special events. And it’s a long list of projects. We hope you’ll like them. Again, we want to thank you for your comments and suggestions.

DEC 3 @ 8:30 PM Climbing Idaho “Climbing Idaho” profiles some of Idaho’s unique rock climbing areas and the climbers who use them — climbing meccas like the Elephant’s Perch in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, The City of Rocks in Eastern Idaho, Chimney Rock in northern Idaho, and the boulder fields of southwestern Idaho. We meet up with some pioneers of Idaho rock climbing who led the way for younger generations.

Idaho Public Television was at the Idaho Super Conference on October 6 to help Idaho teachers learn about the fantastic resources PBS provides for educators. More than 1,000 teachers gathered at Timberline High School for training and inspiration. The event gave IdahoPTV a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers from around the state. You can check out our great resources yourself at idahoptv.org/teachers! idahoptv.org ■ (800) 543-6868

Decemberfest Specials Abound Next month we present an array of special programs to delight audiences with a variety of interests. Among the highlights are a new hourlong Outdoor Idaho special, “Beyond the White Clouds,” a look at this extraordinary place in Idaho and the decades-long fight to create the Hemingway-Boulders, White Clouds, and Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness areas. Speaking of extraordinary places, Rick Steves ventures outside Europe to take viewers on a family trip to Cuba, and we have a new special, Christmastime in New Orleans. We also present a lush look at Utah’s spectacular national parks in National Park Symphony — The Mighty Five. In the how-to and self-help genres, we have a new special from America’s Home Cooking, “Holiday Side Dishes.” Also new is a program from Miranda Esmonde-White called Forever Painless, and from Dr. Daniel Amen, Brain Fit: 50 Ways to Grow Your Brain, as well as World Without Cancer: The Real Promise of Prevention With Margaret I. Cuomo, MD. To help viewers manage their money, we present Moneytrack: Money for Life, and Suze Orman’s Financial Solutions. In the performance genre, My Music presents “Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion.” In addition, we have a new program from Andre Rieu called Waltzing Forever, and a concert, Van Morrison: Live at the Rainbow. Great Performances presents “Joan Baez’ 75th Birthday Celebration” with guests Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Damien Rice, Mavis Staples, Richard Thompson and Paul Simon. Finally, Idaho fan favorites Celtic Woman are returning to Idaho, and Idaho Public Television has tickets for contributions during Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas. All that and more awaits you during Decemberfest, December 2, 3 and 4. And those are my picks for next month. CHANNELS ■ November 2016 ■ Volume 22 ■ Issue 11
