An Afternoon in the Park To begin with a memory, when I was young enough to know it all even if it wasn’t so very much at that, meeting an artist in the down on its heels Tompkins Square Park in a marginal neighborhood that somehow found itself quite central at the time. He asked to draw my portrait, a nice day outside and it wouldn’t take long, a chance to talk and waste some time with culture as happened to be the favorite pastimes of our community in those days. A simple negotiation, but also somewhat of a seduction for he showed me the other drawings he’d done in his sketchbook, people I admired and many I would never know, some close to my scene and others unmistakably distant, from different worlds some ocean away, and all so real as any reading, believable as the very best cartoons can be. It was really just a modest interruption in the idyll of youth, but also a semaphore signaling a deeper disruption that was taking place. Here was another, yet one more who came from somewhere, all of us coming together as a community by the commonalty of our dissimilarity. For that moment- brief as it must have been, though at the time it surely seemed such a manifest eternity- he was so very in tune with what we were doing. And those paintings he brought to us with his shows at the estimable Pat Hearn Gallery, joining the chorus on the streets with even more sounds for the rising urban polyglot, carried their own visual language and vernacular from cities he’d lived or visited, and were like melodies that travel in the smoke signals of a new global tribe. His name was Milan Kunc, and for all that is now so hard to remember, I never forgot that.

Milan thinks it useful to have somebody who was actually around to describe the then-and-there that was New York City’s East Village in the 1980s when he made these paintings, but it’s somewhat of a fools errand. Memories such as these offer the kinds of nostalgia that too often mark the regret of time’s inevitable passing like some toxic residue upon the present. More than that however, the magic that flashed like a glimpse then was a matter of confusion, a doubt or a question more than any truth, and to give it clarity now is to deny and diminish its unsolvable conundrum. That said here’s what I recall: There was still a deeply romantic and surely naïve attachment to the mythologies of modernism, a project that was nearly a century old then but which continued to amaze and awe us with its long progression of radical innovations. But it bothered us too, and perhaps unconsciously filled us with some dread in the implicit understanding that it was in many ways nearly over. There was frustration over the corner that minimalism had quite literally painted us into and all those other rigors that didn’t go far enough yet left us nowhere else to go, and a kind of disbelief that painting had already been declared dead. Even Milan, who studied with our hero Joseph Beuys, would feel the force of conceptualism hitting an inevitable dead end, wondering how all this strategizing could leave no room for something as simple and fundamental as live model painting and taking his work to the streets began to practice this game of perception and rendering on everyday passers by. Everyone however was thinking of some way out, and the most expedient escape became to assert a kind of ragged informality in the face of all those other formalisms cluttering our cultural landscape. There was no way to know it then, but of course we were experiencing that moment of post-modernism, in the truest sense where there is that incredible slippage of meaning and certainty, like an exquisite panic, which actually stopped being so truly post-modern once the theories were attached and everyone could have their own strategies going forward.

I remember the music, not as some exact play-list so much as a sensibility that we all shared. Punk had come along and pretty much saved our souls, along with youth culture as something that could be still relevant and vital. This is very much a generational landmark, so maybe not so easy to read now at such a distance, but it had a monumental effect on our visual culture. More an ethos than a particular style, and rather an anti-aesthetic instead of an aesthetic, Punk’s original rejection of virtuosity and formula was extremely liberating for those of us who followed in its wake. If it was a movement its motion was reflexive as much as progressive, like a slap in the face of the establishment, an eschewing of accepted commercial modes that were strangling authentic expression with formulas that had become bombastic and tired. This model of refusal allowed us to return to prior modes of

representation that had been long abandoned, providing some balm of novelty like a salve to alleviate the queasy unease and ennui faced by the loss of the new. It inspired a DIY (do-it-yourself) sensibility and ad-hoc collectivity that could allow for such transgressive events as The Times Square Show (in which Kunc participated as a member of Group Normal) and a broad-based spirit of inclusivity that relied less on the requisites of talent or skill than on the impulsive spontaneity of participation.

It fostered a chance for retrieval and reinvention that ignited the diverse pastiche of ideas circulating in the East Village and amidst those likeminded rebels such as Kunc who were drawn there from their own domains of recycled potentialities.

And lastly I remember that we somehow all gave up on the idea of good taste. Few outside our demented mindset could fathom why everything was in such obvious bad taste, but somehow to us the childish insistence on unprofessional attitudes, nihilist self-abnegations, low art vulgarity and even kitsch was the best remedy for the authority of an aesthetic order that simply could not understand or respond to the real problems afflicting society and cultural production at that time. Looking back now at the paintings and drawings Milan Kunc produced in that era, I cannot help but register the infantilism that brought us all together as a remarkable kind of freshness that all these decades later still remains a precious rarity in contemporary art. If Abstract Expressionism taught us that representation was retrogressive and conceptual art similarly informed us that painting was a redundant vehicle that could not take us anywhere of value, we honestly had no choice but to pursue these obsolete terms for whatever residual lessons and arcane languages they might yet reveal to us, for surely nothing else that was being fobbed off on us as new had anything pertinent to say to our experience. So when Milan Kunc rolled into our town with a look that unmistakably reeked of Surrealism there was no misunderstanding his intentions. The passĂŠ was itself a provocation, and to go back to something that had been so thoroughly adopted by the advertising industry and belittled by the art world was at once purely populist and profoundly resonant with the cruelty, dishonesty and injustice that had so casually become the oppressive force of inhuman power levied by the invisible hand of governmental control and the smiling face of a brutal conservatism that had taken hold of our world in the Eighties. And for the few, like Kunc, who could somehow address this rage and alienation we all felt while managing to keep their pictures dangerously pretty, well, that just made it all the more subversive.

Rozhovor na téma New York, 80. léta mezi Milanem Kuncem a Tomášem Zapletalem ze dne 18. března 2015 Co tě tehdy přimělo k tomu, abys odcestoval do New Yorku?

V roce 1973, když jsem třetím rokem studoval na Düsseldorfské akademii u profesora Beuyse, jsem si umínil zajet do New Yorku. Můj kolega Jan Knap, bývalý student u prof. Gerharda Richtera v Düsseldorfu a pozdější člen skupiny Normal (1979*), odešel a žil už druhým rokem v New Yorku.

Při této cestě jsem ho chtěl také navštívit.

Tato první cesta do NY na mě nezapůsobila velkým dojmem z hlediska tehdejšího nového umění, protože čerstvě vystavených amerických konceptualistů jako Kosuth, Serra, Carl Andre jsme měli v düsseldorfských galeriích mnoho a viděl jsem prakticky všechno, co doba dala. Po studiu u Gerharda Richtera mi abstrakce už mnoho neříkala. Namaloval jsem asi 50 až 70 abstraktně - tašistických prací, které se mému profesorovi poměrně líbily: „Zajímavé, dělejte dál…!“ Osobně jsem měl ale za to, že tento směr, začatý pionýry jako byli Malevič, Kupka, Mondrian či Hans Hoffmann, byl uzavřen a současné odnože těchto bývalých velikánů pouze rozmělňují původní smysl této revolty a díla se stávají už pouhou dekorací.

Konceptuální umění, tehdejší mainstream, mně a mým nejbližším kolegům připadal příliš prázdný, či dokonce mrtvý, než aby měl právo fascinovat mladé umělce vyzbrojené elánem, jako jsme tehdy byli my. Byl to ale nástup nové éry modernismu zvané „Coolness“. Andy Warhol se svými filmy a svojí The Factory 1 měl pozornost celého New Yorku. Fascinace a zároveň zhnusení byly hlavním tématem těchto experimentálních snímků. Jeho filmy byly velmi legrační, ale nebylo to malování, které mne nade vše fascinovalo. Byl to pro mne pouze útěk do jiného média! My jsme tento postoj považovali za příliš nezávazný a vlastně cynický.

Ale v jedné věci se moje první cesta ukázala jako velmi významná: začal jsem až fanaticky figurativně kreslit a snažil jsem dát volný tok svým pocitům z této moderní civilizační fantasmagorie zvané New York.

Jakou formou se to událo?

Rozvíjel jsem lineární, zkratkovou „cartoonovou“ kresbu, kterou jsem pro sebe objevil, a ta se pohybovala na rozhraní karikatury a klasické narativní kresby. Mrzelo mě, že nás na akademii vlastně nic nenaučili, pouze „jakousi svobodu výběru idejí“, které by dobře fungovaly na galerijním trhu.

To mi bylo málo. Umínil jsem si, že si v rámci možností vydobydu vlastní názor na věc a naučím se dobře kreslit. Tady se musím zmínit o skvělém kreslíři Saulu Steinbergovi, který mne inspiroval, stejně jako už ve své době Andyho Warhola (v jeho kresbách).

Co tě přimělo se do New Yorku vrátit?

V New Yorku stejně jako v konzumem unuděné Evropě se zrodilo nové malířství – italská transavantgarda (Enzo Cucchi, Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente) a neoexpresivní německá malba (Baselitz, Lüpertz aj.) – a s ním i velký zájem o malované obrazy. Došlo k úplnému ignorování rychle zkostnatělého Koncept Artu, malovalo se ze žaludku, jak to jen šlo! Tehdy už jsem byl známý a do Düsseldorfu za mnou přijela na doporučení německého expresionisty Rogera Hermana (tehdy žil v L.A.) americká galeristka, taktéž z Los Angeles, Ulrike Kantor. Nabídla mi samostatnou výstavu v její galerii v L.A. na avenue La Cienega. V této galerii už vystavoval malíř George Condo, kterého jsem později potkal v NY. Mezitím mě navštívila další americká galeristka, Holly Solomon. S manželem Horacem Solomonem u mě koupili celou řadu obrazů. To byl první vážný zájem Ameriky o moje umění.

Tvoje třetí návštěva New Yorku se pojí k legendární Times Square Show 1980. Jak jste se tam se skupinou Normal ocitli?

V Düsseldorfu, kde jsem žil, jsme vytvořili roku 1979 skupinu NORMAL (Milan Kunc, Jan Knap, Peter Angermann), která se rychle proslavila. V roce 1980 jsme jako skupina vystavovali na pařížském XI. Bienále a reprezentovali Německo. Mezitím jsem New York průběžně navštěvoval. Podnikal jsem také časté cesty do jihovýchodní části USA, Nového Mexika a Arizony. Měl jsem tam kamarády mezi indiány kmene Navaho v Taosu v Novém Mexiku. Na těchto cestách podnikaných nejčastěji Greyhound busem 2 jsem do úmoru kreslil. Z těchto kreseb v malých cestovních blocích vznikly později některé důležité obrazy.

To jsem ale odbočil. Na Times Square Show mě pozval tehdy v NY žijící německý umělec Christof Kohlhöfer, přítel Sigmara Polkeho. Z toho tedy plyne, že tuto pro Ameriku legendární show organizovali z velké části Němci, společně s Newyorčanem, sochařem Johnem Ahearnem a pár dalších „Colab“ 3. Já se tehdy rozhodl, že bychom měli vystoupit jako celá skupina Normal, skupiny byly „in“.

Jednalo se v podstatě o squat show, kdy organizátoři zabrali budovu, která byla těsně před stržením, a pozvali do ní v té době neznámé mladé autory, kteří ji zaplnili uměním, většinou vzniklým na místě.

Vtip byl v tom, že budova, kde se celá show odehrála, byla nad východem z metra na Times Square, dodnes srdci New Yorku, tudíž show vidělo obrovské množství lidí, které tudy proudilo! Pracovalo se i před budovou na ulici. Vymalovali jsme s Normal celé přízemí budovy nástěnnou, poměrně humoristickou malbou znázorňující NYC jako příjemnou idylku.

3 Spolupracujících umělců.

Byli jsme jedni z mála Evropanů, kteří se této show účastnili. Prezentovali se tam noví umělci z Lower East Side, mj. John Ahearn, Basquiat, Tom Otterness, Kenny Scharf a některé hvězdy graffiti artu, například Ronnie Cutrone, Crash a Rammellzee a mnoho dalších.

O této show napsal kritik Jeffrey Deitch v Art in America a poté o ní mluvil celý New York. Tato show odstartovala celou vlnu aktivit umělců z East Village a celé Downtown scény. Já v té době začal souběžně vystavovat na obou kontinentech a pendloval mezi NY a Evropou.

A začal kolotoč výstav – Amsterdam, Milano, Madrid, Stockholm…

V Americe tě zastupovali nejlepší galeristé té doby. Jak ses k nim dostal?

Mou první výstavu v Los Angeles viděl kritik Robert Pincus-Witten z NY, který mne později přemluvil k výstavě už v tehdy renomované uptown galerii Roberta Millera (57th Street a Madison Avenue). Hlavně ale navštívila mojí výstavu Pat Hearn, mladá galeristka, která v New Yorku připravovala otevření své nové galerie. Viděla moje obrazy a pozvala mě k účasti na zahajovací skupinové výstavě. Společně s malíři Georgem Condo, Davidem Bowesem a Thiery Chewerneyim jsme byli prvními umělci této skvělé galerie. Bylo narváno a celá výstava se prakticky vyprodala už při otevření a naše show byla nejen velmi pozitivně hodnocena kritikou, ale galerie se stala ostře sledovanou novinkou v East Village. Pat Hearn se rychle zařadila mezi mladé „star“ galeristy.

Jak ovlivnil tvůj pobyt v New Yorku tvoje umění?

Mezi lety 1980 a 1990 jsem byl v New Yorku pravidelně, i několikrát do roka. Dvakrát jsem tam zůstal na delší pobyt. Tehdy mě zastupovala Pat Hearn, je velká škoda, že už nežije, byla to mimořádná osobnost. V New Yorku jsem maloval, kde to šlo a pořád. V jednu chvíli jsem sdílel studio s již zmíněným Georgem Condo, někdy i s jinými umělci.

Být součástí této kreativně bující scény bylo pro mě mimořádně inspirující.

Město bylo v této době označováno jako „Melting Pot“ 4 mezinárodních i lokálních umělců. Sešli se tu prakticky nejtalentovanější mladí lidé planety hledající „NĚCO“…! Byli tam Američani, Britové, Němci, Japonci, Australané, Rusové, Irové a dokonce i skandinávští umělci. East Village se stala jakousi Mekkou umění! Hudba, malba a performance byly v té době obrovským magnetem pro mladé nezávislé lidi odevšud. Velice zajímavá byla také současná klubová scéna, kde se běžně vystavovalo. Dnes vidím, že bez drog by to tehdy asi ani nešlo… Pyramid, Mudd Club, Club 57, Palladium… V klubech probíhaly neuvěřitelné provizorní, ale často i nákladné výstavy se všudypřítomnými performancemi, které se věnovaly různým tématům od náboženství přes pop art, cirkus atd. Vznikl pojem „celebrita“, kluby se staly součástí pop kultury a „Show Up“ – nechat se vidět. New York byla jedna velká párty, zrodil se Fun Art. V New Yorku jsem zformuloval jednu samostatnou část své tvorby, spojení neo-popu a kritického surrealismu. Průkopnickou práci ale samozřejmě měla na svědomí spolupráce se skupinou NORMAL, kde jsme se od sebe hodně praktického naučili. Do klubů, kaváren, ale i do muzeí jsem vždy chodil vybaven několika skicáky, tužkami a štětci, vznikla zde celá řada kreseb, které se staly zárodkem mnoha mých budoucích obrazů. Řekl bych, že mimořádná energie byl ten nejcennější fenomén doby.

A co se dělo v osmdesátých letech v Evropě?

Věru, Evropa nezůstávala vůbec pozadu. Ekonomika rostla a bylo to právě malířství, které otevřelo mnohé zavřené dveře veřejnosti. Inovace byla psána velkým písmem, ale „císařovy šaty“ na sebe nenechaly dlouho čekat….

V přeneseném slova smyslu metafora a hypotéza pro stav, kdy se heterogenní společnost stává více homogenní a její rozdílné prvky či rysy se v přeneseném smyslu „přetavují“ a pojí v jeden harmonický celek.

Jak to myslíš?

Ti, kteří neuměli malovat (a to byla většina), se chtěli také podílet na tomto zázračném dobrodružství zvaném UMĚNÍ, nicméně s obměněnými a zminimalizovanými prostředky. Musíme si uvědomit, že malbou tehdejší akademici na vysokých školách moc nehýřili. Stalo se to právě v NY, že staré struktury držené mocnými galeriemi prosadily pozvolna konceptuální umění zpět, i když s jistými obměnami.

Galeristi z East Village museli se smutkem přihlížet, jak etablované galerie z Uptownu „skupovaly“ mladé umělce a rapidně jim zvyšovaly ceny.

Myslíš tím „HYPE“ 5?

Ano. Ruku v ruce s nárůstem cen děl se rapidně zvyšovalo i nájemné galeriím a bytům. Nakonec přišla pohroma v podobě AIDS a krachu na Wall Street a to byl počátek konce. New York se začal hroutit. Nic nefungovalo jako dřív.

V r. 1987 jsem měl cestu do Itálie na výstavu v Římě a toto město mi tak dalece učarovalo, že jsem se tam přestěhoval. Zůstal jsem celého tři a půl roku. Nějak mi to starodávné město připomínalo vzdálenou Prahu.

A co úloha kresby ve tvém umění? Čím je kresba pro tebe tak důležitá?

Kresba byla nejen stálý doprovod mé tvorby, nýbrž i hlavní zdroj inspirace. Cestovní bloky a týdny strávené kreslením byly mým denním menu. Díky kresbě jsem posléze zjistil, že mohu prakticky malovat všechno.

What made you go to New York at the time?

In 1973, when I was in my 3rd year at the Düsseldorf Academy with Professor Beuys, I just made up my mind to take a trip to New York. My colleague, Jan Knap, a former student of Professor Gerhard Richter in Düsseldorf and later a member of the Normal (* 1979) group, left and he had been in New York for almost 2 years by then. I also wanted to go visit.

This first trip to NY did not make a big impression on me, as for the new art of that era, because we had many of the freshly presented American Conceptualists like Koshut, Serra, Carl Andree in Düsseldorf galleries. I had seen pretty much everything there was to see then. Having studied with Gerhard Richter, abstraction didn’t speak to me much. I painted some 50 or 70 abstract - tashist works, which my professor rather liked: “Interesting, keep on working...!” But personally I believed that this movement, started by pioneers such as Malevich, Kupka, Mondrian or Hans Hoffmann, had culminated and the current successors were just watering down the original sense of this revolt.

The works were becoming mere decorations.

Conceptual Art, the then mainstream, seemed to me and my closest colleagues, too empty, almost lifeless, to be able to fascinate a young artist, armed with such vigor as we had. But this was the onset of a new era of modernism, called “Coolness”. Andy Warhol with his movies and his Factory 5 had the attention of everyone in New York. Fascination and disgust were the main themes of the experimental pictures. His films were really funny, but it wasn’t the painting, which captivated me most of all. To me, it was just an escape into a different medium! We considered this approach to be too non-committal and actually cynical.

One thing turned out to be very important about my first trip: I threw myself into figure drawing, almost fanatically, and I tried to let my feelings about this modern civilizational madness called New York flow freely.

How did it this come about?

I was building on a linear, concise cartoon drawing style I discovered for myself, moving on the edge between caricature and classic narrative drawing. I felt disappointed that they didn’t teach us much at the academy, merely “a kind of freedom to choose ideas”, which would work on the gallery market.

And it wasn’t enough for me. I decided that within my possibilities, I would get my way and become good at drawing. I have to mention the great cartoonist Saul Steinberg here, because he inspired me, as he had done for Andy Warhol (in his drawings).

What made you come back to New York?

In New York, bored with consumerism just like Europe, a new painting style was in: The Italian Transavantgarde (Enzo Cucchi, Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente) and the German Neo-expressionism (Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, etc.) brought with it a huge public interest in paintings.

The fossilized movement of Concept Art was being ignored completely, paintings came from your gut, any way they could! I had already made a name for myself and I got a visitor in Düsseldorf, who came on the recommendation of the German expressionist Roger Herman (L.A.). It was an American gallerist, also from Los Angeles, Ulrike Kantor. She offered me a solo exhibition in her gallery in L.A. on La Cienega Boulevard. The gallery had recently hosted the painter George Condo, whom I met later on in NY. Meanwhile, I got a visit from another American gallerist, Holly Solomon, who, together with her husband Horace Solomon, bought a number of paintings. This was the first sign of serious interest in my art.

Your 3rd time in New York is connected to the legendary Times Square Show 1980.

How did you get there with the Normal group?

While I was living in Düsseldorf, we formed the group 1979 NORMAL (Milan Kunc, Jan Knap, Peter Angermann), which quickly became famous. In 1980 we had a group exhibition at the XI. Paris Biennale, representing Germany. Meanwhile, I would visit New York on occasion. I also made frequent trips to the Southeast of USA, New Mexico and Arizona. I had friends in the Indian tribe Navaho in Taos, New Mexico. On these trips, usually on a Greyhound bus 6 , I would just draw away.

These drawings, in small travel notebooks, became some of my important works later.

But I digress. I was invited to the Times Square Show by a German artist living in NY, Christoff Kohlhöfer, a friend of Sigmar Polke. This means that this legendary American show was largely organized by Germans, together with a New Yorker, the sculptor John Ahearn and some other “colabs” 7.

I decided we should appear as the whole group Normal, groups were very in.

It was basically a squat show, where the organizers got a building right before demolition and they invited young unknown authors, who filled it with art, typically created on the spot.

How did this work?

The idea was that the building, where the whole show was, stood right over the subway exit to Times Square, still the heart of New York today, so the huge number of people who went by all saw the show.

We even worked in the street in front of the building. We painted the entire ground floor wall with Normal, it was quite a humorous painting depicting NYC as pleasant idyll.

Collaborating artists

We were one of the few Europeans who participated in this show. New artists from the Lower East Side presented their work there, such as John Ahearn, Basquiat, Tom Otterness, Kenny Scharf and some graffiti art stars like Ronnie Cutrone, Crash and Ramelzee and many others.

Critic Jeffrey Deitch wrote about the show in Art in America, and then everyone in New York was talking about it. The show kicked off a whole wave of activities for artists from East Village and the entire Downtown scene. At that time I began to exhibit simultaneously on both continents, shuttling between New York and Europe.

A merry-go-round of exhibitions started - Amsterdam, Milan, Madrid, Stockholm...

You were represented in America by the best gallerists of the time. How did you find them?

The critic Robert Pincus Witten from NY saw my first exhibition in Los Angeles, who later talked me into doing an exhibition, at the already renowned uptown gallery Robert Miller (57th.st. and Madison Avenue). But mainly, my exhibition was seen by Pat Hearn, a young gallerist, who was preparing the opening of her new gallery in New York. She saw my paintings and she invited me to participate in the inaugural collective exhibition. Together with painter George Condo, David Bowes and Thiery Chewerneyi we were the first artists of this great gallery. It was crowded and the whole show was practically sold out by the time of the opening and our show was not only very positively received by critics, but the gallery also became closely watched news in East Village. Pat Hearn quickly became one of the young “star” gallerists.

How has your stay in New York influenced your art?

Between 1980 and 1990 I was in New York on a regular basis, even several times a year. Twice I stayed there for a longer time. That’s when I was represented Pat Hearn, it’s a great pity that she’s no longer with us, she was an extraordinary personality. In New York, I painted wherever I could, all the time.

At one point, I shared a studio with the already mentioned George Condo, sometimes with other artists.

Being a part of this thriving creative scene was extremely inspiring for me.

The city was at that time known as the “Melting Pot” 8 of international and local artists. Pretty much all the most talented young people on the planet met there, looking for “something“...! There were Americans, Britons, Germans, Japanese, Australians, Russians, Irish and even Scandinavian artists.

East Village became a kind of art mecca! At that time, music, painting and performance were a huge magnet for young independent people everywhere. The contemporary club scene was very interesting too, there were exhibitions on a regular basis. Today I see that at that time, without drugs, there was probably no way it could have worked... Pyramid, Mudd Club, Club 57, Palladium ... There were incredible makeshift, but often quite pricey exhibitions in these clubs, with the ubiquitous performances that addressed various topics from religion through pop art, circus etc. Concepts like “Celebrity” emerged, the clubs became part of pop culture and “Show Up” - to be seen. New York was one big party, Fun Art was born.

In New York, I formulated a separate part of my work, uniting Neo-pop with critical Surrealism.

The pioneering work of course, was the result of my cooperation with the group NORMAL, where we learned many practical things from each other. I always went equipped with several sketchbooks, pencils and brushes into clubs, cafes, also museums. A number of drawings were created there, which became the basis for many of my future works. I would say that the extraordinary energy was the most valuable phenomenon of that time.

And what was going on in Europe in the 80’s?

Indeed, Europe did not stay behind at all. The economy grew and it was painting, which opened many closed doors to the public. Innovation was written in large letters, but the “emperor’s clothes” were right behind the corner....

What do you mean?

People who didn’t know how to paint (and it was the majority) also wanted to participate in this miraculous adventure called ART, but with a modified and minimalized resources. We must realize that at the time, academics at universities did not celebrate painting much. It was in NY, where the old structures in the hands of powerful galleries brought conceptual gradually art back, although with some modifications. Gallerists from the East Village had to watch with sadness, as established galleries from Uptown “bought up” young artists and rapidly raised their prices.

You mean “HYPE” 10?

Yes. Hand in hand with the rise in prices of works came rapidly increasing rents in galleries and apartments. Finally, disaster struck in the form of AIDS and the Wall Street crash and that was the beginning of the end. New York began to crumble. Nothing worked as it used to.

In 1987 I took a trip to Italy for an exhibition in Rome, and the city charmed me so much that I moved there. I stayed for three and a half years. Somehow this ancient city resembled distant Prague to me.

And what about the role of drawing in your art? What makes drawing so important to you?

Drawing was not only a constant companion in my work, but also a major source of inspiration. Travel notebooks and weeks spent drawing were my daily menu. Thanks to drawing I discovered that I can paint virtually anything.

Picasso je prasátko Malba Milana Kunce datovaná rokem 1981 zobrazuje prasátko stojící u malířského stojanu. Obraz je proveden v kubizujícím stylu. Prasátko má charakteristickou patku tmavých vlasů a aby nemohl být nikdo na pochybách, nápis ho identifikuje jako Pabla. Dílo září jasnými barvami, namalované plátno i prasátko spolu vzájemně splývají: abstraktní kompozice na obraze přechází do okolního světa.

Více jak třicet let staré dílo Milana Kunce vzbuzuje otázku, do jaké míry si zde umělec dělá nemístnou legraci ze zakladatele moderního umění. Je známo, že Kunc patřil ke generaci malířů, která se v 70. letech minulého století vyhranila vůči vrcholnému modernismu či konceptualismu a vrhla se zpět k přímočaré, figurativní malbě plné fantazie, metafor a příběhů. Proti filozofickému umění abstraktních idejí svou tvorbu stavěl na pobaveném, ale i kritickém pozorování života, vlastních zážitcích a revolučně otevřené reflexi historie umění. Proč by si dělal legraci zrovna z Picassa?

Milana Kunce nelze vnímat jako tvůrce-ikonoklastu, který by ohnivým mečem ze svého ráje umění vyháněl vše nepřátelské. Možná by něco v podobném duchu mohl namalovat, ale se zjevnou ironií a pochopením. Umělecký i lidský nadhled je asi tím nejdůležitějším, co v jeho malbě na přelomu 70. a 80. let objevíme. Během studií na AVU v Praze se Milan Kunc střetl s tradicionalistickým a ideologií ovlivněným pojetím umění. Na Kunstakademii v Düsseldorfu zase potkal vyhraněnou avantgardu.

Neztotožnil se ani s jedním, ani druhým. Přes léta školení vlastně zůstal samoukem, který má luxus dělat si věci tak, jak chce, bez ohledu na přicházející a odcházející módy. Moment poznání vlastní umělecké pozice přišel právě ke konci 70. let. Tehdy uběhl pouhý rok mezi tím, kdy se Kuncův Trapný realismus transformoval do obrazů skupiny Normal. Malování už náhle nebylo důvodem ke studu, ale stalo se něčím běžným, normálním.

Nová definice malby, se kterou Milan Kunc a jeho souputníci na přelomu 70. a 80. let přišli, je charakteristická obrovskou mírou smířlivé hybridity. Jen se podívejme na Kuncovy obrazy z tohoto období. V různé míře v nich najdeme ozvuky nejrůznějších, často protikladných uměleckých i popkulturních směrů a tendencí: Kubismu, punku, Arcimbolda, psychedelie, Renoira, art deca, rokoka, Otakara Kubína, městského folklóru, pop artu, karikatury, expresionismu, estetiky kreslených filmů, Sigmara Polkeho a akademické malby 19. století. Tento druh historicky „prolinkované“ malby byl přitom tím, co Milana Kunce vyneslo na absolutní špičku tehdejšího světového umění.

Zvláštní zmínku si zaslouží dvě jména, jejichž reflexi v Kuncově tvorbě můžeme zaznamenat. Prvním je Francis Picabia a jeho pozdní obrazy ignorující rozdíl mezi vysokým a nízkým. Druhým jménem je Josef Čapek, jehož obrysové linie, ale i lyrické vypravěčství v Kuncových obrazech také nachází odraz. Byl to právě Čapek, který i na teoretické bázi upřel svůj zrak mimo úzce vymezenou sféru avantgardního umění, s jeho vědomím ho fascinovala lidová tvorba a díla přírodních národů. Stylový i hodnotový pluralismus, spojovaný s postmodernismem, přináší nejen souvislosti s minulostí, ale i prostor pro novou tvořivou svobodu.

Pablo Picasso se pro Milana Kunce mění v talisman, symbol umělecké potence či dokonce všežravosti 20. století. Kunce nezajímá kubismus jako takový, ale možnosti kubismu, schopnost malby nést formální i obsahové významy. Umělec a dílo splývají, jedno se zrcadlí v druhém. To je důvod k vesele barevné oslavě, ale i kritickému zamyšlení: jak se postmoderní důraz na horizontalitu hodnot snáší s etikou? Prasečí rypáček má nepochybné geometrické kvality, ale kopýtka mohou leccos necitlivě rozšlapat. Svou malířskou meditaci na tato témata Milan Kunc vede v groteskní zkratce, v nadsázce a s úsměvem. Prasátko Pablo proto především přináší štěstí.

Picasso, the Little Pig One of Milan Kunc’s paintings, dated in 1981 shows a piglet standing by an easel. The style of the painting is reminiscent of cubism. The piglet has the characteristic dark forelock and to leave no doubt, a sign identifies him as Pablo. The work is brightly colorful and the canvas with the piglet blend together: the abstract composition in the picture transcends into the world around.

This work by Milan Kunc, over 30 years old, begs the question to what degree is the artist inappropriately mocking the founder of modern art. It is a known fact that Kunc was part of a generation of painters, which in the 1970’s rejected high modernism or conceptualism and returned to straightforward figurative painting full of imagination, metaphor and stories. His work contrasted with the philosophical art of abstract ideas, as he based it on amused, but also critical observations of life, his own experiences and radically open reflections on art history. Why would he make fun of Picasso, of all people?

Milan Kunc cannot be seen as the creator-iconoclast, who would drive all things hostile from his paradise of art with a fiery sword. He might paint something in a similar vein, but with obvious irony and understanding. Artistic and human insight is probably the most important element we can find in his paintings from the late 70’s and early 80’s. During his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Milan Kunc clashed with traditionalist and ideologically influenced conception of art. At the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf he encountered extreme avant-garde. He could not identify with either of these styles. Despite his years of training he remained an autodidact with the privilege of doing things in his own way, regardless of the fashion waves that come and go. The moment when he found his true artistic position came right at the end of the 70’s. Only one short year passed until Kunc’s Awkward Realism transformed into pictures of the Normal group. Painting had suddenly become not a cause for embarrassment, but something common, normal.

The new definition of painting, which Milan Kunc and his colleagues came up with in the late 70’s and early 80’s, is characteristic by a huge degree of forgiving hybridity. Let’s just have a look at Kunc’s paintings from this era. There we find varying strengths of echoes from different, often conflicting artistic and pop-cultural styles and trends: Cubism, punk, Arcimboldo, psychedelia, Renoir, art deco, Rococo, Otakar Kubín, urban folklore, pop art, caricature, expressionism, the aesthetics of cartoon films, Sigmara Polkeho and 19th century academic painting. This kind of historically “linked” painting were what lifted Milan Kunc to the absolute top of the art world.

Two names deserve special mention here, whose reflection may be felt in Kunc’s art. The first is Francis Picabia and his late works, which ignore the difference between high and low. The second is Josef Čapek, whose outlines and his lyrical narration are also reflected in Kunc’s paintings. In fact, it was Čapek, who, even on a theoretical basis, aimed his sight outside the narrowly defined sphere of the avant-garde. Knowing him, Kunc was fascinated by folklore and tribal art. Style and value pluralism, associated with postmodernism, brings with it not only links to the past, but also space for a new creative freedom.

For Milan Kunc, Pablo Picasso is transformed into a talisman, a symbol of artistic potency, or even the omnivorousness of the 20th century. Kunc does not care for Cubism as such, but its possibilities, the ability of the painting to carry both formal and substantive meanings. The artist and the work merge, one reflected in the other. This is reason for a merry, colorful celebration, but also for critical reflection: how does the postmodern emphasis on the horizontality of values agree with ethics? The pig snout has indisputable geometric qualities, but the hooves can tread rather insensitively on many things. Kunc leads his artistic meditation on these themes in grotesque simplicity, with humor and a smile. Therefore, Pablo the piglet brings good luck, above all.
