BAKED KNIGHTLY

VETERAN-OWNED ARTISAN BAKERY BLENDS SERVICE, FAMILY & COMMUNITY

Yennefer Brumley’s Baked Knightly is an artisan bakery where every loaf tells a story — straight from her kitchen. As a female veteran and former U.S. Army culinary team member, Brumley brings a unique blend of military discipline and Renaissance hospitality to her baking. Today, she carries that same focus into her home-kitchen bakery.

At Baked Knightly, the focus is on slow, hand-crafted baking using traditional methods. Brumley and her son work side by side, mixing, kneading and shaping dough by hand — no stand mixers here. What sets Baked Knightly apart is its commitment to ingredients and process. They mill their own organic flours and use only natural flavors, avoiding artificial dyes or chemicals.

Brumley says her approach to food reflects her values. Bread, for example, is universal.

“No matter the culture, there’s a version of it,” she says. “Breaking bread creates a connection, even when you can’t speak the same language. That idea drives everything I do with the bakery.”

The result is a lineup of breads and

baked goods that feel timeless: tangy sourdough, fluffy white bread, cinnamon sugar brioche, and soft pretzel rolls that have drawn steady interest in the Kokomo community. Customers know they are getting something honest, and that trust has helped the bakery find its place at local markets, events and schools.

Beyond the oven, Brumley’s military background shapes her approach to community. She served from 2009 to 2016, earning Top Chef honors three years in a row. Her time with the Army culinary team took her around the world, competing and feeding people in crisis.

“Cooking has always been a passion,” she says. “Even in the military, I wanted to feed people, especially in moments of need.”

Brumley says she never imagined the infantry would be part of her path. She was married and had three young children when she enlisted. The timing was unusual — President Obama had just passed a rule requiring women in the infantry, and every woman leaving boot camp was assigned there.

“It was literally the one thing I said I couldn’t do,” she says. “But I still got to do the culinary team, so I wore two hats. One moment I was in a field in South Carolina, the next I was on a plane to Italy for a competition.”

Her motivation was never just combat. She wanted to feed people, especially in times of crisis.

“When there’s a natural disaster, the culinary team goes in and feeds people,” she says. “I wanted to do something good. It wasn’t just about fighting — it was about helping.”

She also participated in initiatives like the Go Green project, which focused on healthy eating and building community gardens across the United States.

“I loved that,” she adds. “It’s right in my wheelhouse. I want to feed people.”

After her service, Brumley returned to Kokomo, where she and her son launched Baked Knightly from their home kitchen. They now offer fresh-baked bread and pastries at local events and farmers markets, along with providing food to local marching bands.

Most notably, Baked Knightly provides food to those in need — any customer who cannot afford food for themselves or their family can approach a Baked Knightly employee at any event and say “pineapple.” Brumley will know what that means and will provide items for them or their family.

Brumley’s story is not just about baking. It’s about discipline learned in service, family ties in the kitchen, giving back to her community, and a belief that food made with care has lasting value.

CREAM & THE CROP

LOCAL ICE CREAM STORE IS A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR YOUR FRESH MARKET NEEDS

At the former Gulf gas station at 517 N. Apperson Way, Shawn Clark is giving customers plenty to smile about. Now home to Cream & The Crop, the fresh market and ice cream shop carries a wide range of produce, including bananas, potatoes, oranges, zucchini, onions, apples and fresh flowers. Oh, and ice cream.

“People eating ice cream are happy people,” Clark says. “You can’t frown while you’re eating ice cream. It’s impossible.”

Open since May 2024, Clark has owned the roughly half-acre lot on the southwest corner of Apperson Way and Jefferson Street for more than a decade, purchasing it from Jack Bowser Sr., who operated the property as a Gulf gas and service station for decades. The business now operates seasonally, allowing Clark to balance work with the pace of retirement.

“This doesn’t feel like a job to me,” he says. “I was sick a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t come in. That killed me because I wanted to be here for my customers and the community.”

Clark’s connection to Kokomo runs deep. He

graduated from Kokomo High School in 1985, attended Ivy Tech and enlisted in the Army in 1989. Stationed at Fort Ord in California, he deployed that same year to Panama during Operation Just Cause. After serving until 1992, he returned home and began a decades-long career at Chrysler while also starting small businesses on the side.

By the late 1990s, Clark had launched a window-cleaning company with two partners and opened a restaurant near his current store. When the site at 517 Apperson Way became available in 2012, Clark already had a vision for what it could become.

“Selling plants, flowers, produce and ice cream felt right for this neighborhood,” he says. “I’ve been in this area a long time. I know what it needs.”

The offerings reflect his attention to detail. In early spring, produce comes from outside the state until Indiana farms begin to harvest. By midsummer, shelves hold green beans, tomatoes and sweet corn from local growers, while flowers and plants arrive from regional nurseries. The centerpiece,

however, is the ice cream.

“It’s super-premium ice cream — denser, creamier and richer in flavor than standard ice cream,” Clark says. “Fourteen percent butterfat. A three-gallon tub weighs about 27 pounds compared to 18 or 20 pounds for regular ice cream. Ours is creamier and doesn’t melt as quickly.”

One of the most popular flavors is Exhausted Parent, an espresso-and-bourbon ice cream streaked with bittersweet chocolate chunks. Customers are often surprised not only by the richness but by how easy it is to enjoy, with the higher butterfat making a difference for those who are lactose intolerant.

The heart of the shop, though, is in the simple services Cream & The Crop provides to the community in a city that’s steadily expanding.

“Sometimes someone just needs an onion — a one-off for dinner or a recipe they’re making,” he says. “That excites me. They don’t have to drive across town to a big grocery store. They can walk in here, get what they need and be on their way. Maybe they grab an ice cream too.”

SERVICES

• QHHT SESSION

• REIKI SESSION

As Kokomo grows with new industries and development, Clark sees value in keeping the basics close to home.

“If I can do the small things right, if I can make sure they’re done well, then I’m contributing in my own way to the city’s future,” he says.

Family support helps keep the shop running smoothly behind the scenes. His children lend their skills with accounting and operations,

though Clark handles the daily on-site work himself.

He enjoys the connection that comes with running his store, knowing that his personal touches help shape his vision for the community.

Clark’s new chapter is less about scale and more about intent. Kokomo is growing quickly, but Clark believes its future will be

built as much on small, thoughtful efforts as on large projects. Cream & The Crop is his way of proving that a neighborhood store can still matter — and that doing simple things the right way, and with care, can make a difference.

Stop by Cream & The Crop at 517 N. Apperson Way in Kokomo. For questions on current produce and floral offerings, call 765-614-2426 or email creamandthecrop@gmail.com.

TIMELESS TREASURES

GREENTOWN ANTIQUE MALL OWNER FINDS A SECOND CALLING IN COLLECTIBLES

Antique Mall owner Dave Turner spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy, traveling the world and serving a year in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. He enlisted in 1961 and retired in 1981. While stationed in Bermuda, a chance discovery set him on the path to his life’s second career.

“On the way back from a transmitter site, I almost tripped over an old bottle,” Turner says. “A fellow sailor told me it was worth $20. I thought maybe a guy could make a little money in this business of selling old pieces.”

That bottle led to years of searching for glass and collectibles. A trip home to Greentown brought him into the local glass museum, where he picked up a book on Greentown glass. Soon after, he found a piece for $10 at a local flea market and learned it was worth $60. That small victory sparked a deeper passion for antiques.

After decades of shows on the road, Turner returned home in 1991. He married his wife in 1996, and together they opened the Greentown Antique Mall in 1999. He has been in the business ever since, with a brief pause after a heart attack before reopening the shop in 2015.

The mall now spans 3,500 square feet and carries a wide range of antiques. Collectors can find Greentown glass, farm toys, pocket knives, advertising tins, dolls, marbles, lamps, coins, and military memorabilia. Turner shares the space with Ralph and Kitty Troyer, who help manage the shop.

a festive atmosphere. Turner says it draws a loyal crowd year after year.

Greentown has been home for Turner since childhood, and the town has embraced the mall as a community hub.

“I’m homegrown. People know me, and they know I’ll treat them right,” he says.

He also offers appraisal services and enjoys connecting with visitors from across the country.

As the holidays approach, the shop hosts a Christmas open house every December, complete with discounts, cider, cookies, and

The antique mall is about people as much as objects. Turner prides himself on offering quality items and genuine conversation.

“Most people who come in here, we kid around and joke with them,” he says. “They come back because it feels like they’ve known you forever.”

When Turner isn’t at his store, you can find him — and have a fun conversation with him — at one of Greentown’s great restaurants.

“It’s probably always going to be a pizza place,” he says. “We have great places to eat here, and that’s my favorite food.”

For Turner, the Navy instilled a work ethic that still drives him.

“I can’t just sit and do nothing,” he says. “This business and community keep me going. It’s a love.”

Greentown Antique Mall has more than 3,600 square feet of antiques and collectibles and is open year-round except for major holidays. The shop is located at 107 W. Main St. and can be reached at 765-627-8310.
