Hi!

I’m KJ, your kitty correspondent. I’m a longtime media personality with a passion for pets, and for empowering people who love them with the knowledge to give them as many good days as possible. I am thrilled to be a contributor to Holistic Living and to be able to help you think holistically about your pet. Living a holistic life has always been a passion of mine, rooted in my deep belief in the power of wellness and connection. I realized that true wellness goes beyond just the absence of illness; it encompasses a state of balance and harmony in all areas of life. This realization led me to explore different modalities and practices that could support my holistic well-being and that of my cats. My journey began during a challenging time in my life when I was involved in a car accident that resulted in soft-tissue damage. The pain was overwhelming, and I found myself relying on muscle relaxers and other medications to manage the discomfort. I also found myself falling asleep during my radio show due to those medications. I knew deep down that I wanted to find a more natural and holistic way to heal my body. During this time I had the opportunity to meet an acupuncturist through a segment on the show. This acupuncturist became a dear friend and introduced me to the world of herbal supplements and other holistic remedies. I healed completely and was inspired to learn more. I became a reiki master and was drawn to do energy work with pets. No offense to you as a human, but pets have the gift to simply receive the energy without expectations. It’s incredible

to see it in action. When my cat, Grayson, came into my life, a chronic inflammation issue came with him that was so bad that we believed euthanasia was the only option. In a moment of clarity I thought, “I wonder if there are holistic treatments for pets too?”

am always up for learning more and finding the experts who can help us all live more holistically with our pets. For now, purrs, love and light to you and yours,

K J , Your Kitty Correspondent

I’m here to tell you the answer is yes. Eight years with Grayson, who wasn’t supposed to have one more day, is proof that the answer is yes. Addressing the body, mind and spirit of our pets can do wonders for their health and the relationship we have with them. From herbal remedies to science-based, nonintrusive therapies and diet, you can help your pet live a holistic life too! The discovery of holistic therapies for pets and cats has been a transformative and fulfilling journey for me. It has not only allowed me to find natural ways to support my own well-being, but has also enabled me to help others and their beloved furry companions. I aim to empower you and fellow pet owners to take a holistic approach to your pet's well-being and strengthen the bond you share. While you’ll find me often sharing my experiences with my cats, rest assured that just as holistic living applies to humans, it is beneficial to all our beloved animals. If you have specific questions you’d like answered about your pets in an upcoming Holistic Living issue, please let me know. I

THE

ANATOMY OF Self-

Care

Writer / Neil McGuffog Photography Provided

M

ention the term “self-care” to any number of people and you’ll receive a wide variety of responses. Input varies based on age, demographic, health status, ideology, lifestyle and much more. No wonder the concept can be confusing while simultaneously receiving a lot of attention. “Old-school” self-care meant an annual checkup with your physician, teeth cleaning twice a year, eating your green beans, taking a multivitamin daily, and so on. Today we can experience a growing number of selfcare modalities generally landing under the categories of physical well-being - mental acuity, emotional resilience and spirituality. Offerings are far ranging, including (to name a few) supplementation, highintensity interval training, hot/cold therapy, energy healing, sound baths, sleep hygiene, intermittent fasting, meditation, and breathing practices 4 / HOLISTIC MAGAZINE

Thankfully, our society is slowly moving away from the notion that self-care is selfcentered. Our roles in the context of the stages of life we are in benefit greatly from understanding which self-care avenues best suit our needs. Perhaps we focus on a particular component of our lives we perceive as needing a tune-up: social engagement, financial health, relationship enhancement, civic involvement, career development, etcetera. Identifying one or two of these areas may help identify which self-care pursuits will have the most impact. Yet there may be a sense of being overwhelmed or intimidated by the vast array of offerings available. Time and budget constraints come into play. Even the uncertainty of whether a program will work and what others will think can derail our best intentions. However, it doesn’t need to be complicated or scary, according to Colette Pellissier, chief evolution officer of Illuminated Leadership, an organization

dedicated to developing extraordinary leaders with the framework of exceptional places to work. "With the right intention, anything can be self-care,” says Pellissier. “It’s not really useful to tell ourselves we’ll just do less other stuff to make time for self care. If it were easy to drop commitments, we would have already done it, right? How, then, can we honor the call to greater self-care without piling even more ‘stuff ’ to our to-do list? I suggest developing a practice of giving ourselves much earned credit for what we already do in the self-care department.” Navigating the anatomy of self-care begins with a thorough review - an inventory - of what physical, emotional, mental and spiritual tools are working (or not working) along life’s path. Am I moving my body enough? Do I fly off the handle at the smallest of provocations? How much time do I dwell on the negative, or focus

on the positive? What is my relationship with Source, God, Higher Power, Creative Intelligence, etcetera? This approach of inventory taking can come from various outlets such as a substance abuse counselor, life coach, therapist or other practitioner. Taking inventory can provide a straightforward roadmap to identifying which areas of self-care need the most attention. Keep it simple by focusing on one or two aspects, without the need or justification to tackle multiple areas at once. Be open to investigating a new practice or modality that aligns with an area that’s most challenging. For instance, if anger and resentment consistently come up as a thought form or an awareness, consider a breathing practice to help lower reaction time to a stimulus that historically generates bitterness. Try mindful cooking and eating - consciously preparing food with the intention to enjoy the preparation then purposefully slowing down to consume. These, and many other suggestions you’ve no doubt heard and read about, may seem so simple and elementary. And they are, yet they get overlooked or taken for granted because of their simplicity. Please give something meaningful and simple a try.

turn up some valuable data, focus on what feels best in the body, mind and soul. This leads back to a willingness to explore which aspect of self-care lands best physically, mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually. Blending elements of mindfulness and yoga, for example, can help to lower blood pressure and improve cognitive function. Energy work such as Pranic healing and reiki may help in enhancing how the body responds to trauma. Movement combined with nutrition can improve weight management issues. Self-care options are nearly limitless. Here are some key points to remember when contemplating the growing number of self-care options available:

• Keep it simple. Don’t overcomplicate the process. • Be kind to yourself. All the answers do not need to come at one time. • Ask for assistance. • Try using a triage approach to self-care. Identify what is most needed and achievable, and work backwards

What if a relationship at home, work or play from there. is struggling due to poor communication • Consider a different angle to a familiar and connection? Finding quiet time to activity - rock-climbing versus meditate and be still can translate into better listening skills. Practice being present with weightlifting, indoor cycling versus a loved one, colleague or friend. Tending outdoor, organic cooking versus to our own self-care and relationship with supplementation, etcetera. self can strengthen and fortify our outer relationships. By now, one may be compelled to google “what is self-care?” Good luck! The number of entries, as may be predicted, is more than three billion! While doing this search may

GRASS IS GREENER CONSIDERING THE IMPACT OF ORGANIC LAWN CARE ON PETS

Writer / KJ McGlinn Photography Provided

McClennan's motivation for starting Good Nature stemmed from his experience as a teenager in the early ‘90s being the designated lawn fertilizer guy for his parents' place. He followed the conventional chemical program for lawn care until his biology teacher shed light on As we look forward to the grass rethe problems caused by these chemicals. emerging, there are some compelling This revelation sparked his curiosity and reasons for you to consider an organic approach to caring for your lawn this spring, made him question the necessity of using especially if you’re an animal lover. I spoke harmful chemicals on lawns. with Alec McClennan, founder of Good Nature Organic Lawn Care, about the pet At that young age, McClennan took on owners they serve, and why we should all the challenge of finding an alternative think about what we put on our lawns for approach to his parents’ lawn care. What the sake of our pets, our wildlife, our kids started as a simple task to find a replacement and ourselves. for chemical-based lawn care for his own home turned into a passion. He says more When it comes to thinking about a holistic approach to your pets, you have many options from integrative medicine to organic diets, but today we’re going to talk about how thinking holistically about your lawn is beneficial for your pet too.

often these days, people call Good Nature looking for an alternative to traditional lawn treatments because of their furry family members. “There's a lot of people that are concerned about that; I used to think it was kids that they wanted to protect, but now I realize I think they're more interested in their dogs,” he says with a smile. Traditional lawn care products often contain pesticides and herbicides that can linger on grass and pose a threat to your pets. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to various health issues including skin irritations, respiratory problems and even more serious conditions. Pets, especially dogs and cats, love to explore their

surroundings and may ingest substances from the lawn. Organic lawn care eliminates the risk of accidental poisoning since natural fertilizers and treatments are nontoxic. Another benefit for you and your furry friend? Good Nature Organic Lawn Care provides mosquito, flea and tick prevention. McClennan urges pet owners to verify, before choosing a lawn company, that their natural approach is truly organic.“You’ve got to be a little bit careful,” he says. “For us, we'll use garlic, peppermint oil and cedar oil to keep mosquitoes and ticks out of the yards. I think pet owners might sometimes be more concerned about that than their lawns.” Many people ask if organic lawn care can provide the same results for their lawn. McClennan reassured me the results are even better. “You ultimately will end up with a healthier lawn.” McClennan adds that, similar to a holistic health approach for our bodies, “you've got to diagnose what’s going on and get to the root cause.” Simply put, choosing organic lawn care is a paws-itively responsible decision for pet owners.

Stop killing your soil with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Replace them with soil-building organic materials.

Plant native plants.

YOU, ME & A HEALTHY BOUNDARY

HOW HEALTHY BOUNDARIES IMPROVE OUR RELATIONSHIPS

Writer / Laura Rain Photography Provided

Y

ears ago I was a dutiful and diligent self-care practitioner. I had been on a healing journey that required a tremendous amount of selfcare. In addition to prioritizing holistic selfcare appointments, I had a daily self-care ritual that fed my body, mind and soul. Fast-forward many years to my present life, and my self-care needs have changed. I no longer need that same level of care, but can struggle finding the time to get my basic self-care needs met amidst all the demands of a busy life. I’m not alone. Burnout, sleep deprivation, as well as overwhelming commitments and duties seem to be increasingly common. The need to slow down and rest is desperately needed for many of us. 8 / HOLISTIC MAGAZINE

According to the book "Sacred Rest” by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, there are seven areas of rest: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, sensory and creative. Upon completing the self-assessment quiz in her book, I discovered I am most in need of rest in the physical and sensory categories. This means that in order for me to feel more restored, I need to incorporate more ways to rest my body, and to experience my environment as a quiet, peaceful sanctuary, void of sensory input. How do I make that happen in the context of a busy, noisy household? When the kids are asleep is the answer to that question!

the kids wake up and interrupt my selfcare mojo? How do I continue taking care of myself amidst other demands on my attention and energy? When the kids were little, their needs trumped my own. That is normal. Children need to be attended to. What about now that they’re older? What are the boundaries? And by the way, what are healthy boundaries anyway?

This question comes up often in sessions with clients. People can think having boundaries is a way to separate themselves or protect themselves. When we think I’m not a morning person, but I’ve been about boundaries in this way, we tend to doing it - waking up early and taking the feel selfish and worried that our boundaries time to breathe deeply, journal, stretch, might hurt someone else. I’d like to suggest meditate and have my cup of coffee in peace. that healthy boundaries are less about selfIt’s lovely, and something to be cherished protection, and are more about an act of and respected. But what happens when self-awareness and self-love. When we are

aware of what our needs are and we set a boundary to take care of ourselves, it is also a gift to our relationships and to the people in our lives. Here’s why. If we are not aware of our needs and we don’t know what our boundaries are, we are unable to communicate them with others. When those uncommunicated boundaries are crossed either by ourselves or others, the result is anger. Anger can lead to resentment, which, sadly, is one of the killers of relationships. Anger is a natural response when a boundary, whether spoken or unspoken, has been crossed. On the other hand, when we are aware of our needs and have healthy boundaries with ourselves, and can communicate them with others, that builds trust. The ability to trust ourselves to know our boundaries, and honor them, also gives trust to the people we are in relationships with. They can trust that we are able to communicate our needs and take care of ourselves, ultimately giving them the freedom and permission to do the same. In my example, if I allow my children to invade my self-care time, I become irritable with them, harboring resentment that I got interrupted, and perhaps even concluding that it’s impossible for me to get my needs met. That doesn’t sound like a path to happiness or healthy relationships for anyone! On the other hand, if I know what my needs are and I teach my children how to respect my self-care space, I become a

more patient and loving mom. I am also modeling for my children that it’s OK to take care of themselves. Now that is a recipe for happy relationships for everyone! Everyone needs healthy boundaries. Boundaries allow us to BE. I encourage you to explore the following: Do you know what your needs are?

Do you set boundaries to ensure they are met?

Do you hold yourself accountable for honoring your boundaries?

Do you communicate your boundaries clearly with others?

Self-awareness + healthy boundaries + authentic communication = healthy, trusting, loving
