After college at Indiana University, Jennifer Seffrin longed to move away and explore new ideas and ways of life. One place she landed was Tempe, Arizona, where she took classes at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts. It was there that she took an interest in the concepts of conscious living, alternative therapies and holistic care. When she moved back to Indiana, she wanted to find a way to shine a light on the local holistic community.

“At first I was like, ‘Where do I start?’” Seffrin says. “But a quote stood out to me: ‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.’ by Theodore Roosevelt. I began to invite people to lunch.”

In 2012 she founded Indy Holistic Hub, a holistic health and wellness network designed to cater to the mind, body and

spirit. Indy Holistic Hub offers an extensive online directory of resources for the public that includes acupuncture, coaching, hypnotherapy, massage, chiropractic, natural products and holistic medicine.

Now, in 2023, she launches the next part of her vision, a local magazine featuring a wide range of topics related to holistic therapies, wellness, cutting-edge science, green-living and more! The Holistic Living magazine debuts on October 1st at the 8th annual Holistic Hub Wellbeing Fest with all attendees receiving the first copies of the magazine, which will also be offered digitally.

“It’s all about supporting people to take another step toward their well-being, by finding their fit where they are right now on their path,” Seffrin says.

The Indy Holistic Hub website offers a community calendar that lists classes, activities and other opportunities to learn

from local holistic professionals.

“That’s a source for people to say, ‘Oh, I can go on a retreat,’ or, ‘I can stick my toe in this intro class,’” Seffrin says.

Eight years ago Indy Holistic Hub began hosting an annual Wellbeing Fest, giving the general public a prime opportunity to interact with and learn from practitioners and professionals in the community. Seffrin explains, “With the addition of the Holistic Living Magazine, combined with what Indy Holistic Hub already offers, this creates such complimentary synergies to reach more people out there searching for health and wellness options.”

“If we desire to live a vibrant, enjoyable, meaningful, purposeful life, holistic health is critical,” Seffrin says.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INDY WINTER FARMERS MARKET

The Indy Winter Farmers Market (IWFM) commemorates its 15th season with a heartfelt reflection on its storied history. As the market reaches this significant milestone, it emphasizes the pivotal role played by the Indianapolis community in shaping it into the thriving organization it has become today. The IWFM leaders extend their profound gratitude to the dedicated community of small businesses, loyal customers and generous sponsors whose unwavering support has been instrumental in sustaining and elevating the market over the years.

2008

The first season of the IWFM featured 24 vendors. From the beginning, the market was committed to shaping the future of the community, city and state by advocating for local, sustainably produced food.

2011

The IWFM relocated to the Indianapolis City Market and welcomed 66 vendors. This season was notable for winning the Edible Indy 2012 Local Food Hero Award,

recognizing the market's contribution to the local food movement.

The IWFM piloted an Eat Well Bucks program, allowing Hoosier Works cardholders to use benefits to purchase IWFM vendor products. That same year, the IWFM, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and Eskenazi Health partnered on a Veggie Bucks voucher distribution program to make IWFM produce more affordable. These programs informed the creation of the Fresh Bucks program and IWFM’s Triple-SNAP Match commitment.

Story and Photography Provided 4 / HOLISTIC MAGAZINE

2014

The IWFM moved to the Circle City Industrial Complex (CCIC) in January 2015, accommodating 60 vendors. This move provided a larger and more suitable space for the growing number of vendors and visitors.

2018

Celebrating its 10th year, the Indy Winter Farmers Market returned to the CCIC with its most extensive lineup of 81 vendors, indicating its enduring popularity and impact within the community.

2020

Despite the challenges posed by the worldwide health crisis, the IWFM remained committed to providing essential fresh fruits, vegetables and food staples to the community, highlighting the critical role of farmers markets during such times.

2021

The market relocated again to The AMP at 16 Tech, signaling its adaptability and dedication to finding suitable spaces for its continued growth and impact. Relocating also increased the diversity of IWFM customers and vendors, with more than 20% BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of color) vendor representation.

2023

The IWFM will return to The AMP and is developing exciting new programs to add to the IWFM experience. Stay tuned!

The Indy Winter Farmers Market kicks off on Saturday, November 11, 2023, and runs on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until Saturday, April 27, 2024 (excluding Saturday, November 25, 2023). For more information about the Indy Winter Farmers Market, please visit indywinterfarmersmarket.org.

FIND YOUR SAFE HAVEN

CREATING SPACE TO FOSTER SELF-REGULATION

My story, like all journeys, has lots of twists and turns. I began my career as a mild disabilities special-education teacher. During my teaching career, I saw students begin to have more and more issues with mental health and self-regulation. They didn’t seem to understand how to express their feelings or manage all that was happening to them.

I found myself identifying with my students' feelings when my parents passed. Self-regulation was challenging. After years of being the decision maker for my parents’ care, I had to be ready to take a phone call at a moment's notice. This was something that I hadn’t had to do before. I was a mess, and a friend suggested I head back to yoga class. Yoga became my haven, my home and my space to selfregulate.

Before yoga, I would relive my grief story. I couldn't regulate my nervous system. I had been on "alert" for 3 years and didn't

know how to turn it off. I felt alone. I didn't resonate with support groups. I was drowning. Waves of grief would wash over me and I didn't always know what to do. I discovered that if I allowed the emotion to flow through me, it would begin to dissipate. I could cry and be with myself for a time. Eventually I learned to live with grief. I grew around it. The tools I learned in yoga became my guide.

We were not meant to continually process the emotions of what happened to us. We are meant to experience it and allow those emotions to move through us. The more we “process” or relive, the more those emotions become rooted in the body. When they come back up, they can manifest as anxiety, depression, illness or other health concerns. When this happens, our mind will try to protect us from it happening again. Self-regulation can guide us in redirecting the mind.

For me, grief became part of my life, and not this thing outside of me that I had to heal. Through yoga, I was able to integrate all of my grieving feelings into who I am. When the waves of grief would come, I knew what to do, how to be with them.

GET IN NATURE

Go for a hike or walk, in the woods or at a local park. Sometimes, for me, I just need to go around the block in my neighborhood - just get outside. Even better if you can pause, take off your shoes, and feel your feet in the grass or sand if you’re near a beach. Take a moment to lean into a tree, feel the vibration of the earth move through you. You can even do this in the city. Soak in the sun, even if it's behind clouds, breathe in the greenery around you, and listen to the sounds of the birds, bees, locusts and rustling leaves - they're music. Sometimes if I’m feeling stuck, all I need is a quiet walk. When things get crazy, get outside.

MEDITATE

Meditation is simply the act of getting in touch with your inner self. It doesn’t need to be a long, drawnout process. I find that the more I meditate, the better I’m able to handle the crazy, wild, unexpected things that come my way. Meditation can take so many different forms: focusing on your breath for a few minutes, guided journeys, writing morning pages (see the book “The Artist's Way”). Explore different practices to find what works for you. These can go from a few minutes to 30 minutes. If meditation is new to you, set a timer for two minutes, and focus on your breath or a simple mantra (phrase). Once that becomes easy, increase the time.

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

So often, we do what everyone else wants and desires.  We take care of everyone else. We forget to take time for ourselves. I like to curl up with a book, write, walk, or take in a movie or TV show. Want to get really crazy? Go on a retreat or trip on your own.

PLAY OR DANCE PARTY IT UP

As adults, we can be so serious. We forget to play, have fun or even have a dance party. Remember your younger self? What did you like to do? Make a choice from those options. I love to have a dance party by myself, turning up the music and just letting my body move. You could also play a game or do something for fun.  Remember the days of tag, softball and kickball in the yard? Going to a playground and swinging as high as you can? Use your imagination, laugh, and be silly or goofy.

GET REST

Rest is underrated. Our bodies don’t just need sleep, we also need rest. Rest can take forms such as the first four self-regulation ideas. It can also just be the act of doing nothing. Think of the Italian phrase, “Dolce far niente,” which means, “The sweetness of doing nothing.” How often do we do nothing?

We are so inundated with screens, social media and obligations, what would happen if we took a little time to just exist and do nothing? When I take time, slow down and set work aside, I’m so much more efficient when I come back. My mind is clearer.

Here are five ways you can begin to incorporate self-regulation into your life.

—Excerpt from an online article on psychologytoday.com by Steven Stosny,

When we consistently use practices to self-regulate, we become aware of our bodies and how we feel. This allows us to be able to recognize when something is off or needs attention. We can better handle stressful situations and even be the one people co-regulate with. We respond, instead of react. We have a well to give from. We have greater capacity to hold ourselves and those around us. We have the tools to use, to bring ourselves back to regulation, back to management, back to baseline. Just remember, if you don’t prioritize your mental well-being, your well-being will force you to prioritize it.

Research consistently shows that self-regulation skill is necessary for reliable emotional well being. Behaviorally, self-regulation is the ability to act in your long-term best interest, consistent with your deepest values. (Violation of one's deepest values causes guilt, shame, and anxiety, which undermine well being.) Emotionally, self-regulation is the ability to calm yourself down when you're upset and cheer yourself up when you're down.

“THE BLUEPRINTS OF GOD”

Pay heed to coincidence, for Life’s game is at play. Nothing just happens in a haphazard way. Events are not random that make up your day.

We’ve all had the moment pieces fall into place. Circumstances are perfect; the right time, the right space; A brutal tragedy is defeated by a saving grace.

Your book falls open to the needed page. Opportunity knocks as if cued to the stage. Perfect music is scored, defining an age.

Then a heart’s torn to pieces from immeasurable grief, the wrong place, the wrong time, with no sign of relief, leaving the devout even questioning belief.

There at a sign is perceived, a message comes through. A Spirited hello, with much love sent to you. One heals with the salve of knowing what’s True.

'Timing is everything' isn’t uttered by nuts. The chance in encounters is anything but. Fortune’s luck of the draw begins with the cut.

POEMS OF LOVE, INSPIRATION AND HOPE
10 / HOLISTIC MAGAZINE

You create your destiny one day at a time. You can do it with reason, you can do it with rhyme, and lousy can happen as life turns on a dime.

But in Always there’s purpose to this grand façade. Fate has built empires, history changed with a nod. A design to the universe, the Blueprints of God.

Two events coincide to give you a clue. Especially when dropped right out of the blue. Heaven sent you direction, a suggestion or two.

The Plan’s so much grander than most mortals believe. You may harvest serendipity but God plants the seed, with the love and the knowledge that what will be will be.

WHAT DOES HOLISTIC MEAN TO YOU?

“Holistic means envisioning the long view, which prioritizes interconnection, interdependence, inclusivity and diversity. Holistic means focusing on solutions that are grounded in fact-based evidence, critical thinking and ethical wisdom. Holistic means considering the whole rather than the part, whether the focus is an individual, a community or the global society. It is a deep knowing that recognizes what we think, do and say matters and influences others in a meaningful way.”

“Living holistically and the holistic concept to me involves awareness and recognition. As I gain a deeper awareness of my trek on this planet, I recognize more readily where I can best be of service. A very big part of the ‘suiting up and showing up’ for me involves working with the substance use disorder population. From a holistic view, this group, with such diverse backgrounds, benefits from programming like restorative yoga, guided meditation and mindfulness practice."

TEAMING UP

Holistic health education and empowerment are essential components of promoting overall well-being and self-care. Here in central Indiana, we have a father-son duo who has teamed up to do just that.

Dr. Jerry Weber, ND, and his son, Dr. Michael Weber, ND, founded their Body Balance Healing System to help empower individuals to listen to their bodies and actively participate in their own healing journey.

Recently on the “Think Holistic” podcast, Michael explained why he was inspired to join his dad: “It started really with him helping me, fixing me with issues that I had because I didn't feel good. He showed me

different ways of being able to help the body stay in balance naturally. I wanted to learn more. When I saw people's faces when he was helping them, how excited they were, how much better they felt, I wanted a part of it.”

Muscle testing is a key component of the Body Balance Healing System, as discussed in the podcast. It is a systematic approach that utilizes anatomy, muscle testing and various other techniques to achieve health optimization.

The best part is that anyone can do it. “There's a lot of people in the world that muscle test, but there's not that many people who have a step-by-step outline and proven precise system,” Jerry says.

The Webers’ Body Balance Healing System has a beginner class, and individuals can

choose to go through additional advanced courses, even becoming certified to teach others how to muscle test.

Whether you are a medical doctor or a mother looking to ensure the well-being of your family, the system can be tailored to your needs. For example, a mother can learn to test fruits and vegetables for pesticides and other harmful substances, ensuring the safety of her family's food, while a medical doctor can apply the techniques as another tool to help patients achieve wellness goals.

The Webers are so passionate about and invested in holistic health, they’ve launched a new product that aims to help more people interested in healthy alternatives to traditional medicine and prescription drugs. The duo describes their new product line, Innergize, as imprinted frequency

water, which involves putting frequencies of high-quality supplements into water using an imprinting program. They explain that frequency is everything in future medicine, and frequency medicine was emphasized by Albert Einstein.

Michael expresses his excitement about the potential for Innergize to help more people. “We’re able to put a lot of different supplements into something that's safe for children, safe for you, even pets, and it's a lot faster result,” he says.

Together, these two naturopath doctors believe that by sharing their knowledge and experiences, they can inspire others to make positive changes in their lives. The father-and-son duo exemplifies the power of working together towards common goals and the impact that family support can have on one's holistic journey.

“We're just here to help you learn how to stay healthier in whatever way it may be,”

Jerry says.
