Joining Forces to Deliver a Good Day in Carmel

As the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens. That couldn’t be more true in the Carmel Arts & Design District right now, thanks to Anne O’Brien, a passionate advocate for creativity and community. O’Brien is the visionary behind Create What You Crave, a new nonprofit focused on fostering collaboration and dialogue among artists and creatives. In a city where art is celebrated on gallery walls and public sculptures, she saw a gap. While Carmel provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the arts, there wasn’t a dedicated space for artists themselves to gather, exchange ideas and fuel their creative energy.

O’Brien is determined to change that.

Her mission became even more urgent when the city announced it would no longer produce Meet Me on Main,

the popular monthly Second Saturday event in the District. Rather than lament its loss, she saw an opportunity. In response, Create What You Crave was launched as a new monthly event designed to keep the spirit of community and artistic engagement alive. One of the most recent gatherings featured local artist ROSEY, who not only created a live painting, but also participated in a moderated discussion on creativity and mental health. It was a night of connection, expression and inspiration—exactly the kind of space O’Brien set out to create.

Of course, her ambitions don’t stop there. She has her eyes on the bigger picture—literally. Carmel’s Arts & Design District carries a special distinction as a state-designated Cultural District, a designation awarded by the Indiana Arts Commission in 2010. She wants to ensure the District

retains that important recognition while expanding its reach to a wider, more diverse audience.

And the business community is responding. Local shops like Silver in the City have jumped in to support her initiative with a social media Giveaway Challenge—encouraging visitors on Second Saturdays to post photos of art in the District for a chance to win gift cards. It’s a fun, easy way to celebrate creativity while giving people an extra reason to engage with

local businesses.

When I asked O’Brien why she felt so strongly about this work, she laughed and said simply, “I can’t not.” For her, creativity isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity, a fundamental part of what connects us to ourselves and to each other.

“Creativity is everywhere, not just in painting and sculpture, but in whatever your calling is,” she said. “That is your art and the world needs it.”

Create What You Crave isn’t just the name of her organization. It’s her guiding philosophy. There’s no gatekeeping, no waiting to be invited in. The message is simple: Create. Share. Connect. Be part of something bigger.

And if you’re looking for a place to do just that, mark your calendar—on June 14, Kuaba Gallery (404 West Main Street in Carmel) will host the next Create What You Crave gathering from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Artists from all disciplines are invited for an evening of creative exchange and camaraderie. RANDY SHAFFER CUSTOM HOMES AND RENOVATIONS

CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN BUSINESS

\Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographers / Karl Ahlrichs & Sarah Browning

When Brad Weber and his wife, Becky, set their sights on building a new home in Holliday Farms, they didn’t have to research who to hire because they had already built three homes with Randy Shaffer Custom Homes and Renovations and could not have been more pleased.

“Randy is by far the best builder we’ve ever worked with,” says Weber, who appreciated how present and attentive Shaffer was throughout the building process.

“He met with us or spoke with us every week during our build,” Weber says. “Whenever I called him with a question, he’d pick up the phone or text me back within minutes. He never made us feel like we were just a number. He truly cares about his customers and the quality of his work.”

Hard work, integrity and commitment to quality are all values that were instilled in Randy Shaffer at an early age as he watched his father construct homes.

“Dad taught me that showing up and doing what you say you’re going to do was very important, as was being honest with the homeowners and vendors,” says Shaffer. “That’s the only way to build trust and reputation that lasts.”

Shaffer knows that building a home is a big expense and that the process can be stressful. To help alleviate that stress, he remains a steady hand throughout the build, listening intently, offering solid advice and ensuring the end

result is something that everyone is proud of.

Randy Shaffer Custom Homes and Renovations, serving Hamilton County and the surrounding counties of Indianapolis, has been building luxury homes since 1985. Through the years he has built a stable of loyal customers like the Webers and Karl and Barbara Ahlrichs, who first hired the company 15 years ago to build their home. Karl Ahlrichs describes working with Shaffer and his team as a seamless experience.

“They took the time to understand our vision, turning our ideas into a home that perfectly balances elegance, coziness and brightness,” says Ahlrichs. “Their personal and collaborative approach made us feel heard and valued, and at no time did we feel overwhelmed by our choices, which has been a problem when working with other builders. Every detail of the finished home reflected our preferences.”

A significant advantage to hiring Shaffer is his hands-on experience in the industry. He knows what it takes to build a house, not just in theory, but in practice. That kind of experience provides him with a deeper understanding of every part of the process. From the carpentry to the electrical work, he proactively anticipates and solves problems before they occur. Such was the case for the Ahlrichs, when Karl shared an idea he had about how a door should swing in the pantry.

“Randy listened patiently to my idea, and said he could do what I was describing but that the outcome wouldn’t be good,” Ahlrichs says.

“EVERY HOME IS DIFFERENT; THAT’S PART OF THE FUN. I LOVE THE VARIETY BECAUSE IT KEEPS THINGS INTERESTING. THE GOAL IS TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT FEELS RIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO LIVE THERE.”
—RANDY SHAFFER

Shaffer explained how the trim, which was not yet installed, would interfere with the opening of the door. He offered an alternative solution that would achieve the same goal without interfering with the use of the shelving in the pantry.

“He solved the problem before anything was built,” Ahlrichs says. “Wisdom is wonderful.”

Plus, Shaffer has lots of great ideas of his own. For example, in the Ahlrichs home, he suggested transforming the “dead space” under the stairs into a play area for children.

“This was not in our original plans but has been a significant part of the kiddos’ lives,” Ahlrichs says. “Our children and grandchildren love the welcoming character of what we built with Randy.”

In 2018 Scot Pollard and his wife, Dawn, had Randy Shaffer build their home in The Village of West Clay, because in their previous home he had done an amazing job remodeling their primary bath and raising some doorways to accommodate Pollard’s height.

“We knew Randy was a pleasure to work with and cared so much about making our vision [a reality],” says Pollard.

Shaffer has built various styles of homes precisely because he’s focused on each client’s interests.

“Every home is different; that’s part of the fun,” says Shaffer, who is currently working on two completely different projects. One is an English farmhouse while the other is a sleek modern design.

“I love the variety because it keeps things interesting,” Shaffer says. “The goal is to create something that feels right for the people who are going to live there.”

The Pollards certainly are pleased.

“Randy and his team did not disappoint,” Pollard says. “We couldn’t be more pleased with our custom home. It’s definitely a statement home in the Village.”

The Ahlrichs were impressed by the way Shaffer kept to the budget.

“Adding features, expanding the floor plan and making the home even better than the drawing on paper can be tempting,” Ahlrichs says. “While all of this happened, with Randy’s guidance, our home came in only 2% over the agreed budget at the start of the project.”

During his career, Shaffer has been recognized for his superior work in the field. For instance, in 2004 he won Builder of the Year at The Village of West Clay. In addition, Builders Association of Greater Indiana awarded Shaffer the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Home-A-Rama in Chatham Hills and again in 2024 at the Home-ARama in Promontory.

He’s building another home in Chatham Hills for the 2025 HomeA-Rama in September that features a unique Japanese shou sugi ban siding, a burnt siding on the exterior of the house. It is proudly built with the support of trusted vendors he has worked with over the years, including Phantom Screens, Stone Center of Indiana, McComb Windows & Doors of Central Indiana, Indy Custom Stone, Jack Laurie Group, D&D Mouldings and Millwork, Raber Construction, and Weber Concrete Construction.

“The thoughtful design and quality construction have created a functional and inviting space,” Ahlrichs says. “My wife and I are both cooks, and the chef’s kitchen has been the center of many family gatherings and great meals. Natural light fills the rooms, and the cozy ambiance makes every day special. Living in our new home has been an absolute joy.”

IN A ROUNDABOUT WAY

THE UNEXPECTED CANVAS

He spent decades shaping outdoor spaces — patios, gardens and serene backyard retreats — places where people made memories. Randy Sorrell, known for his design acumen in Carmel and beyond, built a career on composition, contrast and flow. But when the time came to slow down, retirement didn’t quite sit right.

Because while some people retire to rest, Randy Sorrell retired to paint.

What started with a few canvases quickly became 50. Not long after, it became clear: he wasn’t just painting to pass the time. He was painting because he had to.

“I love to paint,” he laughs, “and would rather not have rooms of inventory.” So, he found himself doing what he always does when something matters — he got serious.

Today, Randy’s studio reflects both his inner world and his outer adventures. His work — layered, bold and emotive — is not just abstract. It’s personal. Vintage sheet music, historic 1850s maps, sand from beloved beaches and, yes, even a splash of bourbon or ocean water — his paintings are tactile journals of the places and passions that have shaped him.

While some pieces lean into abstraction, many echo the principles of modern realism — where recognizable forms are imbued with personal narrative and emotional depth. This blend allows viewers to see both the subject and the sentiment, anchoring memory in imagery while leaving space for interpretation.

Every brushstroke carries more than color — it carries memory, intention and often a sliver of Randy’s soul. Whether it’s the echo of a song, the warmth of a sunset or the laughter of grandchildren, he pours moments into each canvas with emotional honesty that resonates deeply with those who view or collect his work.

It’s no accident that Randy’s art feels familiar yet surprising. His years in design taught him the importance of composition. “We could be talking about a painting or your bathroom spa,” he says. “Creating flow, focal points … it’s all connected.”

What’s different now is the brush — less blueprint, more instinct. “Most paintings start very intentional,” he admits, “but at some point, muscle memory and emotion take over. And that’s when the magic happens.”

Community has always been a through line for Randy. Growing

up, he watched his father give quietly and consistently — rescuing dogs, helping neighbors and sponsoring baseball teams. That legacy lives on in Randy’s commitment to philanthropy. He donates artwork to fundraisers, not just because he can, but because he wants to — especially when the cause touches a friend or a memory.

His work has been called “Sorrellism” — a mash-up of emotion and experience, where scale and structure sometimes give way to intuition. A Paris street, a Carmel skyline, the sun-washed cliffs of Cinque Terre — all find their way into his pieces, transformed by memory and imagination. “Everything carries a sliver of my heart,” he says.

Even in this so-called “retirement,” Randy remains driven. He dreams of gallery space in Arizona, New York, maybe even New Mexico. But he’s not chasing fame. He’s chasing connection. “If I can harness a memory or dial up a song that inspires … I love it.”

So, in a roundabout way, one could say Randy never really stopped designing — he just swapped blueprints for brushstrokes.

VERSED SKATEBOARD SHOP

ELEVATING THE SKATEBOARDING EXPERIENCE

It started with a simple question: What could skateboarding in Indianapolis be if someone raised the bar?

Aaron Vaughn had an answer. He didn’t open Versed Skateboard Shop just to sell decks and wheels. He opened it to elevate the entire culture.

“We wanted to offer something different,” he says. “From the brands we carry to the way we present our own product and media — it’s all about quality, authenticity and keeping it simple.”

And simple doesn’t mean small. With skate shop video features in “Thrasher Magazine” and *Transworld Skateboarding* — the two biggest media outlets in the world — Versed has made itself known well beyond Indiana.

So, what makes it unique?

Aaron studies the industry like an artist studies light. “I pull a lot of inspiration from NYC and European-based companies,” he explains. “If their aesthetic aligns with ours, we’ll likely carry them.” His current favorites? Brands like Warsaw LTD, Grand Collection, Hélas and Last Resort — all carefully chosen and thoughtfully curated.

But while Aaron keeps an eye on the global scene, his heart beats for local skaters. Versed is rooted in community.

“We’re always looking out for the next generation,” he says. Through their “flow”

program, young talent is invited into the shop to receive gear, guidance and support — sometimes shaping a path toward a skateboarding career. And when kids walk in to build their very first custom board? Versed takes their photo, tags them on social media, and celebrates their entry into the skate world.

“We want to get them excited to skate and inspire their friend groups to join them.”

Beyond the walls of the shop, Versed hosts events at local skateparks, scavenger hunts and giveaways — all with one goal: keep the wheels turning and the community rolling.

Ask Aaron for a favorite memory, and he won’t pick just one. “Every person who walks through that door has a different story,” he says. “We’re just grateful people believe in what we’re doing.”

As skateboarding trends evolve — sometimes rapidly — Versed keeps pace while staying true to its core. “We follow the top skateboarders and the brands they ride for,” Aaron says. “When we release our own graphics, we aim to be current, but also distinct.”

That attention to detail extends to customer service. From top-to-bottom board customization to tailored gear recommendations, Versed makes sure each setup fits the rider — not just the trend. “Many brick-and-mortar shops don’t offer that kind of hands-on experience,” he adds. “We take pride in it.”

Looking ahead, Aaron’s vision is focused but open. “Our goals will stay the same but evolve with the times,” he says. “We want to keep giving back, welcoming newcomers, and encouraging every skater to push themselves — to become the best, and most fun, version of who they are on a board.”

So, in a roundabout way, one could say Aaron Vaughn didn’t just open a skate shop — he created a space where every skater can carve out their own paths.

For more information, you can catch up with them on the web at versedboardshop. com, as well as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube @versedskateboardshop.

Cares Homes Heart with

When Dr. Randy Schroeder arrived at CarDon & Associates’ senior living community in Pendleton, Rawlins House, he was in a rough patch. Severely weak from fighting the lifethreatening condition of bacterial meningitis, he needed maximum assistance with basic movements and daily tasks.

Thanks to the community’s dedicated team of rehab therapists, Randy can now walk up to 200 feet with supervision, climb stairs with minimal help, and manage daily activities on his own. Upon graduating from rehab, he called the community “a gift from God,” praising the staff across all departments.

While Rawlins House helped Randy return home, other CarDon communities have become home to seniors because of the skilled, compassionate care they provide.

STRENGTH & COMFORT IN CARE

Like many seniors, Donald Wilson was initially hesitant to enter senior living and accept assistance. Now, he’s been living at CarDon’s Altenheim community for more than six months and feeling right at home.

“My dad is an old-fashioned, do-it-himself kind of man, so he sometimes has a hard time asking for help or embracing it,” Robert said. “But the nurses here make him feel comfortable with that. I trust that he’s in good hands when I’m not here, and that’s the best feeling for a family member to have.”

As with the majority of CarDon’s communities, Altenheim provides independent and assisted living as well as rehab, memory support, on-site dialysis and 24/7 long-term care that not only fulfills residents’ daily needs with dignity but keeps them active and engaged. For example, Donald loves building puzzles and attending the community’s music therapy classes, which CarDon offers on the basis that music is scientifically proven to improve memory and overall cognition in seniors. During these classes, the instructor encourages residents to sing and dance to favorite tunes from their past.

Of course, CarDon’s rehab programs keep residents spry as well. With state-of-the-art gyms and highly trained physical, occupational and speech therapists equipped to guide residents through recovery, CarDon’s communities see daily success stories.

Delivering rehab therapy and long term care is more than a job for CarDon team members — it’s their passion.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PLACE

Mary Delaney also spoke of the relief she felt knowing that staff would always be around to assist her mother at CarDon’s Carmel Health & Living.

From the nurses safely positioning her mother’s wheelchair to a cafeteria employee always being ready to serve her decaf coffee, Mary said every member of the community’s staff made a positive impact every day.

From the moment Mary stepped into Carmel Health & Living, she was welcomed with open arms, which she didn’t expect when she spontaneously decided to schedule a tour of the community on a Sunday afternoon. From that first moment, she knew her mother would be in good hands.

Mary elaborated: “Other senior communities are appealing on a surface level. They have the gourmet meals, the nice tile, the flowers on the tables. But they don’t have the level of care that CarDon has.”

The people here make all the difference.

B OTTLING STATE FAIR NOSTALGIA

Writer / Ryan Gabbert Photographer / Michael Durr
Dan and Jamie Fahrner / Owners

For countless Hoosiers, summer and the State Fair go hand in hand. At the fair, elephant ears, corndogs, and lemon shakeups aren’t just treats but beloved traditions. Just the thought of these iconic fair foods stirs up vivid childhood memories for many people. Now, one company has discovered a way to capture that nostalgia in a can.

Shake Up, previously known as Hi & Mighty Distillery, was founded in 2022 by husband-and-wife duo Dan and Jamie Fahrner. After spending 15 years in brand marketing, Dan felt a persistent pull from the universe nudging him toward a different path.

“A few years ago, I started getting interested in the idea of creating a brand of my own, something my wife and I could work on together,” Fahrner says. “We’ve always been into cocktails (kind of cocktail nerds, honestly), so we naturally found ourselves drawn to the spirits world.”

Inspired by their extensive travels around the world, the idea of opening a distillery began to take shape, and Hi & Mighty was born. Soon after launch, Nick Traeger joined the team, bringing with him culinary and mixology expertise along with a fresh perspective on flavor development.

With this vision in mind, the team set out to open shop. They soon found a home at a place familiar to so many around the state: the Indianapolis Fairgrounds.

It was a fitting choice, given the Fahrner family’s strong ties to the long-standing traditions of the state and county fairs.

“One of those early products, now our flagship, is called the Lemon Shake-Up. It’s a cocktail made with real lemon, cane sugar and gin,” Fahrner says. “It’s inspired by the classic lemon shake-ups you’d get at county or state fairs.”

Part of why they aligned with the State Fair was due to proximity, but there’s also a personal connection: Jamie grew up selling barbecue with her dad at county fairs. So that fair and festival culture has been in their DNA from the start.

In March 2025, the decision was made to rebrand, and the company became Shake Up. Building on the success of the Lemon Shake-Up canned cocktail, the company launched several bold new flavors. It now offers a Peach Shake Up, Cherry Shake Up, Iced Tea and Lemon Shake Up, and Blueberry Shake Up. Whatever the preference, there’s a flavor for everyone.

In addition to the canned cocktails, Shake Up also sells bottles of the gin used to make the drinks. Two different styles are available: Big Fuss, a dry savory gin, and Big Heart, a wild floral gin.

These products can be found at liquor stores and supermarkets across Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Looking toward the future, the team at Shake Up wants to expand operations to other states and continue growing the brand.

“At this point, the goal for the business is less about a specific place and more about the product,” Fahrner says. “We now have the ability to scale and grow both regionally and nationally. Our main focus is on building strong brand recognition here in the Midwest. That’s where people are most familiar with the lemon shake-up, whether it’s the flavor, the concept, or just the nostalgia tied to it. Indiana will always be home, and it’ll likely remain our biggest market because of our deep roots here. But we’re definitely looking to expand, reaching new audiences in places like Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota and beyond. We want to connect with people who grew up enjoying lemon shake-ups and introduce the product to those who haven’t had the chance yet. That’s really the heart of our vision moving forward.”

Summer holds a special place in the hearts of many; school’s out, and the season of fun begins. For generations of Hoosiers, the Indiana State Fair has been a cherished part of that summer tradition, often marking the final celebration before the school year returns. The memories of those hot August days are almost always tied to one thing: food. It’s the food that sets the fair apart, and it continues to be a hotbed of culinary innovation. Where else can you find a bacon-wrapped Twinkie alongside a glazed donut cheeseburger?

While everyone has their personal favorites, one treat stands above the rest as a fairground essential: the Lemon Shake-Up.
