Task 01

Task 02

“Space - Function - Mater ”

“City Material”

In the first task, the material and its very own essence played the crucial role. The overall topic “How much space do we really need” was applied onto the resources, questioning the origins of the material and efficiency of the material usage. Wood has became the denominator of the first task and was later on inscribed in the project as well. The proposed small shelter cabin is a demonstration of the minimal space and explores the possibilities of the wood. Walls are made of solid panels that are stacked on top of each other, supporting the beams of the roof that is covered with the planks. Different functions require different construction methods. The essence of the material was strengthened due to the freshness of the recently cut wood, which lead to later transformation as the wood dried out.

4

The main question of the second task was what makes up the genius loci of the place. Materiality plays a huge role as it provides the main visual input to the observer. Besides that, other factors naturally comes in play - Proximity (how the spaces transforms into places based on the spatial qualities), Layering (of the new inputs atop of the original structures), Surrounding and Context (that defines the overall atmosphere and result of the built environment), Utility (that leads to the functional and therefore in a way aesthetic results) and Reinterpretation (of the traditional techniques and typologies)

Task 03

Task 04

“Project Location”

“Future Scenarios”

The third task was focused already on the project itself. The soft site investigation explored the qualities and potentials of the chosen plot. Most dominant aspect is the rigid structure of the existing parking house on a site. Furthermore, there is a high potential of the living public space due to the planned and existing public transport knot that comes with the high density of people. The overall position in the center of the whole masterplan study further highlights the importance of the future proposal.

The last task was a quick study of the possible future scenarios. The prevailing topic is the modification of the parking lot structure into the urban spaces (from above): Mobility hub (showing the potential integration of the transport infrastructure into the city); Urban gardening (exploring the strategies of the transformation of the parking lot structure into the garden space with its positive social impacts for the neighborhood residents); or Market alley (creating the vital retail space and thus intensifying public space life).

Project

Urban situation Project is a part of the overall masterplan for the wider city center of Vaduz. Location of the project is in the central part of the development on the parcel with the parking lot structure. Right next to the plot is the building of the bank that was decided to be preserved. Main topic of the urban solutions are the two axes - main street on the east side and the pathway with the bike lanes on the west sides, that are connected on several places, which defines main building areas for the new structures.

Main topic of the project is the transportation strategy and its incorporation into the urban space. The newly proposed tram lines together with the bus transportation is expected to take over most of the car transportation load, while the rest is redirected outside the city. For the residents, commuters and retail owners, there is a series of connected underground parkings below the whole development, which can be entered on the north and south point without the increase of the car traffic in the area.

Research Question

How to integrate mobility network into the urban living structure?

The overall transportation scheme follows the strategy of replacing the car transportation with the other means of transport - mainly by the newly proposed tram line together with the bus network. Secondarily, the bike network support increases to make this mean of transport more available and convenient, and lastly, the densification of the area and the wide variety of provided services together with the direct connection towards the city center is hading towards the walkable city. The mobility transfer point is the place with the high intensity of the people - commuters, local residents, tourists etc., which comes with a great potential for the viable public space with the sufficient services and retail spaces. However, the level of intensity has to be balanced with the privacy that allows the preservation of the residential life as well. The volumetry acts in this way. Basic scheme shows the initial block concept, that shuts off the inner courtyard and creates the wide street. This solution however does not offer variety of the spaces needed for the different target users, and furthermore doubles the masterplan - proposed street. The next scheme works with the volume shift, that already differentiates the three different places with unique aura and overall atmosphere. Those places are further confirmed in the final stage. The most public space - square - is formalized by the arcade, that at the same time acts as a shelter and a provider of the public functions. The setback from the existing bank windows create the shopping alley that act as the connection between highly formal square and more natural environment that surrounds the river in the back , and finally - the inner courtyard is widened allowing to create the urban garden, that act as the recreation and social zone for the residents as the contradiction to the highly densified areas in the surrounding.

8

The program follows the potential of the spaces created. Two buildings are residential with the different flat sizes to ensure wide demography of the residents, and the tower on the square is proposed as the hotel for the commuters and tourists. The ground floors are then given to the public functions. Ground floor of the hotel on the square is hotel lobby and a cafĂŠ while the other side of the square is mobility office and car rental office with the connection to the underground parking and a bakery. The program slightly changes in the alley, where the spaces are given to the retail function that mixes with the bars and restaurants in the ground floor of the existing bank (part of the neighbors project), which creates lively small scale city alley. In the riverside, the main topic is are the bikes due to the direct connection to the bike lane with the bike repair shop and bike stands with the rental bikes. Ground floor towards the garden is then occupied by the bike parkings for the residents and utility and storage rooms that are needed for the gardening processes.

Basic volume closes off the inner courtyard and creates the street.

The original parking lot structure grid is inscribed in the whole new proposal, where the outlines and the main load bearing structures follow this grid, which allows to support the new buildings without the need of demolition of the underground part of the parking lot. The concrete from the demolished part is reused as the filling for the pigmented concrete structure of the newly proposed ground floor, that carries and distributes the wight of the wooden construction of the rest of the buildings. The residential buildings are designed from the panel construction, while the 9 floor hotel is build using the wooden skeleton. In the garden, the pillars from the original parking house ground floor are kept and used as the grid for the wooden boxes with the earth. This memento of the past structure creates the unique genius loci of the place. The facade of the hotel follows the materiality of the construction with its long wooden vertical lamellas. The residential building mimics these lamellas in the details of the hand railings of the loggias, balconies and windows. Another wooden element are the massive wooden window frames, that are stepping in front of the facade. The rest of the facade is covered with the lime plaster, which is together with the wooden construction is typical for the residential buildings of the region and allows the wooden construction to breathe.

Visualisations show the materiality of the project as well as the life in the created places. From the square to the alley into the garden, the character of the space changes into the more informal atmosphere. The interior visualisation then shows the interchange between those spaces.
