European Parliament renovation (Brussels, 2024)

The Paul-Henry SPAAK building in Brussels, houses the Chamber, the facilities for holding parliamentary committee meetings, organising press conferences and welcoming visitors. It is considered the main building of the European Parliament.

The building is expected to be renovated in the coming years in order to fulfil environmental objectives and all sustainability certifications, improve its accessibility, expand the programme, make it safer, expand the hemicycle, upgrade its image and integrate it with the rest of the urban fabric.

Within the Directorate-General for Infraestructure and Logistics (DG INLO), as a part of the Brussels Environmental and Upkeep Unit, the traineeship works consists in project management, architecture design and layout, and graphic works and documentation representation. Is being a very enriching experience so far, dealing with the complex political environment plus a giant architecture project.

Graphic information and detail renovation data are confidential.

Sport complex in a school (Zürich, 2023)

The new sport complex complements the school building area with a pure cuboid that makes optimal and compact use of the available processing perimeter. The new volume connects the group of buildings in the school area.

The sport complex is made of a solid exposed concrete base on which the ground floor and upper floors are supplemented with a wooden structure. The wooden structure is covered with a skin made of a large, translucent glass facade, which unifies the external appearance and provides lightness and uniformity to the building. The main element of this building is the upper lantern which rises above the main volume and filters light from the exterior On the other side, the massive volume of the library next to it, floats above the glass-enclosed library. This differentiated materialization is accentuated. At the same time, an exciting interaction between the two buildings is created.

Confort, lighting and transitions between outdoor and indoor space were the key points in this competition

Ersatzneubau

Idee – ortsbauliches, architektonisches Konzept

The train station as an integrating element of the waterfront into the urban fabric (UPC 2023)

This master’s dissertation questions the role and function of the railway station as a private enclosure. It goes beyond the canonical concept of the station, exploring other typologies and the way they relate to their immediate surroundings: more specifically, it emphasises how a platform can simply be an extension of the urban space. Therefore, the objective is to ensure that the platform participates in what goes on around it and responds to its location, its place, rather than creating an impassable barrier. The new platform forgets the limits, dissolves and merges, in a more rigid way, into the urban part and, in a more organic way, into the sea.

A series of integral actions at the train station, in the car park square and in the surrounding streets form part of the project; a project that arose from the need to link the town with the sea by means of a crossing over the tracks. Following the guidelines of the planning of the municipality that has not been executed, the parking of the station is moved to design a square with two new equipments that will act as a neuralgic centre, centre of activity and as a hall of Malgrat de Mar. (Barcelona, 2023)

ESTACIÓ ANTIQUADA I POC ACCESSIBLE

Maria - 35 anys, cambrera

P: Why do you choose Malgrat for spending your holidays? How would you improve the city?

R: Malgrat rocks, you know? Sun, sick beaches, close to Barcelona, mad cheap. come to Spain every year [...] We gotta improve beach access, more public transport by the shore. Security’s a must too, some people tryna take advantage. Let’s make it even better, yeah?

The city, a problem of architecture (UPV, 2022)

This is a project with a clear and defined statement: to implement a residential and office equipment package on a city block in Valencia that is currently being used as a parking lot.

The proposal is to utilize the city block as a connection point for the adjacent streets and the creation of a public square, where the two volumes enclose it and open up to it with ground-floor equipments. Both the sloping public space and the typology of the residences are worked on. The residences are characterized by having spacious access corridors, large square meters of balconies, good lighting and ventilation, and efficient use of communal roofs.

The main value of this project is to create a sense of community. These are flexible, pass-through, and inclusive residences for different types of residents. Additionally, they are highly integrated into the urban fabric.

Singual Loft in Zürich (Zürich, 2024)

The goal of this refurbishment is to optimise the space to the maximum, to enhance its lighting and to connect both levels of the home more efficiently.

To achieve this, a sculpture was designed which, placed in the middle of the loft, acts as an intermediate floor and living room space. It is a very slender staircase-sculpture, which connects both spaces and adds storage. In total, of the 57 square metres of the house, this intervention gains 17 square metres. It is not only extra square metres, it is an excellent room with rest areas, a transition space and great views.

The structure was conceived as a red wired element that dialogues excellently with the existing materials and the new wooden furniture.

How our perceptions are intertwined with data and our environment (TU Delft, 2021)

This project was the result of the 24 hours competition held at the International Design Seminar 2021 at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft. The theme was Datascape, and for a week, we had the opportunity to engage in discussions, reflect, and attend presentations by prominent architects and designers.

Today, in our contemporary society, we tend to attach the value ‘good o things that are scientifically valid’ or data driven, but we forget that human interpretation plays a key element in the way we analyse, visualizae and usa data. As a team we analysed the sub- and objectiveness of data, architecture and people. We state that data is not completely objective, as the topic that the data analyist has chosen is personally biased, and it is valid until proven otherwise (Popper, K.). The way data is visualized can also play a big role on how users of data interpret it. We want to spark the disoussion by confronting people that what they see is a perception of reality, and there might be measurable and unmeasurable data that could completely change our view of, for instance, an “optimized” building.

Revit modeling and render project (Ibi-Barcelona, 2022-2024)

During the final years of my studies, I’ve been learning and refining my skills with Revit. To practice these skills, I modeled and worked on visualizing images to explain the materiality and the quality of the spaces in this small house “casa Onil” in the Alicante countryside.

The interpretation of construction elements, furniture, paviments, the materiality of spaces, or lighting at different times of the day are all aspects that are addressed in the rendered images created from the Revit model.

Apart from this model, in my freelance projects, I helped to model “casa Txell” in order to achieve a couple of images that told key aspects of the project.

Camino de Santiago Chapel competition (UPV, 2020)

For the competition organized by the Hispalit Ceramic Forum, which called for the construction of a chapel on the Camino de Santiago, the aim was to reflect on what a chapel is, what perceptions it seeks to evoke, and to experiment with the experience of the Camino de Santiago.

El Camino is inherently a profound and emotionally charged journey, a literal voyage to the pilgrimage destination. However, there is another way to experience the Camino, and that is by traveling inward, towards oneself. The creation of a space for reflection and meditation. To find oneself, one must sometimes get lost. This concept forms the foundation of this project. Although it may seem contradictory to get lost on a path, the importance of creating pathways is crucial, and that’s where their significance lies in this structure. The spaces serve as the foundation around which labyrinthine pathways revolve. Thanks to them, we can come across spaces we may not have imagined. The chapel is buried beneath the grand “chimney,” and to find access to it, one must navigate through the labyrinth, allowing oneself to become lost in the process.

Neighborhood Unit

Rehabilitation and urban regeneration in “El Cabanyal” (UPV, 2020)

This project aims to emphasize an overlooked part of the city by revitalizing the Cabanyal neighborhood based on its own intrinsic values. It consists of a set of residences built on the old streets of the Clot neighborhood, alongside the abandoned Portuarios Block, which is finally undergoing rehabilitation.

The project’s concept is rooted in reclaiming the values of the old city, where development was on a human scale, prioritizing pedestrians, greenery, a sense of community, direct connection with the outdoors, shared spaces, and their care. These are the values being sought for the new housing project.

The intervention is driven by intentions such as community-building, humanity, proximity, social integration, and cooperation. It moves away from modern dogmas in favor of a more intimate and human architecture. Everyday life and the daily experiences of people hold great significance in this project. It’s about well-being, not only on a personal level but also on a social one.

Fran Silvestre Course (UPV, 2019)

During my second year of college, we were tasked with choosing our favorite location to design a single-family home according to our preferences. The outcome was a visual project, based on models and adapted to the topography of the land.

The project arises from the superposition of two curved elements. Both intersect and form a strong connection with the terrain. This union of curved surfaces rests on the cliff, optimizing the slope to the fullest extent, creating four openings at each end of the structure. The interior spaces, especially the terrace, are oriented toward the sea, with the ocean at their feet. Solid, simple, and discreet, this residence commands the sea horizon.

Research Paper

European football stadiums and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Stadiums in the 21st century exert a great social influence and have a major impact on many aspects of urban life. The culture of sport and entertainment is booming, turning these infrastructures into centres of mass attraction. From an architectural point of view, the construction of these complexes, essentially larg structures, has a high economic, energy and material cost, with a considerable impact on social aspects. Curiously, these large works are underused for a signif icant percentage of the time.

The purpose of this Final Degree Project is to study each of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda applied to European football stadiums, the continent in which they have traditionally been most deeply rooted. The analysis will be formalised in three aspects: structure, infrastructure and club or use. It is a guide to good practice in relation to the SDGs when designing, building, maintaining and/or demolishing a football stadium, with particular emphasis on references, measures and actions.

Energy efficiency of concrete with Phase Change Materials

Nowadays, our society has the responsisbility of reducing the energy consumed in the building sector. A promising technology to achieve this goal is the implementation of thermal energy storage (TES) solutions in buildings envelopes. Phase change materials (PCM) which act as a thermal buffer, take advantage of the melting temperature of the material to change its state, improving building energy efficiency.

This work explores and investigates how with a cheap PCM material, such as surf paraffin, high impact thermal results are obtained. To check and verify this condition, two concrete specimens were prepared with the treated PCM aggregate and two without the PCM. The four test cubes were placed in an oven and using thermal sensors, the data about the temperature evolution during the process of heating and cooling was collected for further analysis.

The results between the PCM concrete samples and the samples without PCM were compared, verifying the promising performance in terms of energy impact.

The procedure of the experiment is the following:

1) PCM is melted in the oven (Fig.1a).

2) The arid aggregate is immersed in liquid PCM at 100 degrees so that it can absorb the PCM by capillarity, leaving the PCM inside (Fig.1b). Two specimens were made with the treated aggregate and two without the PCM.

3) After this, the process continues dosing and mixing all the components and the subsequent pouring into the different moulds, placing a thermal sensor inside to be able to measure temperatures afterwards (Figs.1c, 1d).

4) It is necessary to compact and cure the concrete before stripping the formwork and starting the measurements.

5) The experiment consists of placing the four test cubes in an oven at a constant temperature, initially 60 degrees (Fig.2). The temperature of the oven is also recorded throughout the time of the experiment. Data is taken every 10 minutes in order to compare how fast the temperature inside the different specimens increases (Figs.1e, 1f).

6) In the second part of the experiment, the aim is to find out the opposite, how long it will take for each of the specimens to return to room temperature (Fig.3).

Basalt FRP rebars research and comparation in terms of sustainability

The consequences of global warming are becoming increasingly disastrous. Nowadays, our society has the responsisbility of reducing the energy consumed in the building sector. In order to reduce this 40% of emissions, applying sustainable development criteria is fundamental throughout the life of materials in construction. More specifically, the use of steel rebar as reinforcement is the most widely used product in concrete reinforcement, and it is therefore important to reduce its climate impact. Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) is a promising alternative to replace these steel reinforcements due to its high strength, low weight and high durability capabilities.

This work explores, investigates and compares different rebars in sustainable terms. Four rebars of different materials are experimented: steel, stainless steel, glass FRP and basalt FRP. To check and verify the different geometrical and tensile properties, four rebars of each material are tested in the laboratory. Finally, an analysis and comparison of various sustainability aspects of the different bar types is carried out. The aim is to find out which reinforcing bar is the most sustainable and whether the basalt FRP rebar is as optimal as it promises to be. Different lines of research are opened after the experiments apart from the comparisons in terms of sustainability and life material cycle.
