Foreword by Willem van Gogh

Inspired by Brabant

Vincent van Gogh and Brabant. Both are joined forever, not only because Vincent spent the greatest part of his life living in Brabant, not only because he made a quarter of his total output of work here, but mainly because Vincent loved Brabant.

He had a passion for the nature, the landscape and the inhabitants.

His passion was the main theme through his drawings and paintings.

Brabant themes that he repeated in numerous pieces during his French period.

As the great-grandson of his beloved brother, Theo van Gogh, I am proud that Brabant, just like the Van Gogh Museum, is able to inspire so many people with Vincent’s life and work.

I thereby congratulate Van Gogh Brabant and the heritage sites in Zundert, Tilburg, Etten-Leur, Nuenen and Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch. They offer you the opportunity to become acquainted with Vincent close up.

Vincent van Gogh

World-famous artist of Brabant origins Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is a world-famous artist. He lived in more than 20 different locations in Europe. His works of art are dispersed over the world.

The origins of this master lie in Brabant. He lived here for half his life.

Wherever he was, Vincent was always homesick for Brabant. Vincent’s love for the farmland, the countryside and the lives of the simple folk originated in this southern province of the Netherlands. These are the themes that run thorough the sketches in his letters, his drawings and his paintings.

Whether he was working in Amsterdam, the Hague, Brussels, London, the Borinage, Drenthe, Antwerp, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence or Auvers-sur-Oise, Vincent was and remained a Brabant man.

Vincent’s Brabant years Who was Vincent van Gogh? How did his childhood and youth shape him?

Where did he live and where did he go to school, what was his relationship with the local population, with friends, with family? What brought him to some crucial choices in his life?

What actually made him the Vincent Van Gogh we know? You will discover it in Brabant!

Vincent is just unique In a short period, Vincent van Gogh went through a major development. He produced more than 1,000 drawings and over 800 paintings. His palette was initially dominated by grey hues but already in Nuenen, he studied colour theories and experimented fully with colour and colour contrasts.

Vincent was an innovator who gained inspiration from national and international painters such as Rembrandt, Delacroix, Millet, Breton, IsraĂŤls and Mauve. What makes Vincent globally distinctive from many other artists is the simplicity, the everyday scenes, the colours and the energy his pieces radiate. Van Gogh always drew and painted with his heart and soul.

Life as it was.

In turn, Vincent van Gogh was a source of inspiration for many: artists, entrepreneurs, event organisers, DJs and others. There are various examples of this later in this brochure.

Van Gogh Brabant Under the flag of Van Gogh Brabant, five unique locations have focused their attention on Vincent van Gogh’s Brabant years and the way they influenced his further career.

The Province of North Brabant finances the Van Gogh Brabant Foundation.

The board of the foundation is made up of representatives from the five collaborating locations (Zundert, Tilburg, Etten-Leur, Nuenen and ’s-Hertogenbosch).

VisitBrabant carries out the project management of Van Gogh Brabant.

Welcome to the real world of Vincent van Gogh Various municipalities in Brabant have unique bonds with the artist. Vincent was born and raised in Zundert. He received lessons from a famous drawing teacher in Tilburg. The village of Etten was a turning point in his life; it was in Etten that he set up his first studio. It is here that he saw his drawings continually improving; he gained more confidence in his own ability and registered himself as a painter. In Nuenen, he developed into a genuine painter of peasant life and he created his first masterpiece The Potato Eaters. A number of original Brabant pieces can be seen in Het Noordbrabants Museum in ´s-Hertogenbosch.

Other locations in Brabant also played a role in the life of the young Vincent. Consider for example Breda, Zevenbergen, Helvoirt and Eindhoven. Authentic presentations alternated with modern projections and techniques, such as augmented reality, make his life almost tangible.

Vincent’s birthplace Zundert is of course the place where Vincent van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853. In the parsonage of the Dutch Reformed Church of which Vincent’s father - Theodorus van Gogh – was then pastor. Vincent saw the light of day exactly one year after his stillborn brother, who was also called Vincent. It was a tough start to what would later turn out to be a turbulent life.

Vincent was exceptional early on The Brabant border village of Zundert, situated between the forests and heaths, is the place where Vincent spent his childhood years. He was a reticent, someone introvert boy. He was a Protestant in a predominantly Catholic village. For years, he was educated at home in the isolation of the parsonage. The inhabitants of Zundert very quickly noticed: Vincent is ‘different’. Vincent was exceptional early on.

When Vincent was 11 years old, his parents decided to send him to the Jan Provily boarding school in Zevenbergen in preparation for secondary education.

You can experience how ‘being different’ must have been for Vincent at various locations in Zundert. In the garden for example, where he often sought and found solace, where he could enjoy nature and often played with Theo, his four-year younger brother. Or at the house in which he was born, the church nearby (where the whole family were baptised) and the cemetery. Here is where his older stillborn brother, Vincent, is buried. Also visit the Van Gogh Gallery (former sexton’s house) and the artist-in-residence guest studio.

The Vincent van Gogh House now stands on the spot of the house in which he was born.

The first drawing lessons In 1866, at 13 years old, Vincent van Gogh went from Zundert to Tilburg to follow lessons at the brand new Rijks-HBS (National Higher Civic School).

The school was located in the former palace of King William II. Nowadays, the premises house Vincent’s Art Room. It was the only Higher Civic School in North Brabant. Vincent moved into the boarding house at “Haringseind”, the current Annaplein, at the start of the Korvelseweg.

At school, Vincent received drawing lessons from an artist who was famous during that time: Constant Huijsmans. He drew and painted and published various books about teaching drawing. During his lessons, Master Huijsmans paid a lot of attention to drawing depth. It is notable that Vincent had a lot of trouble with that in his later work.

Vincent was known as a good, somewhat headstrong pupil Vincent left school halfway through his second year. He returned to his family home in Zundert. The reason he left is unknown. Vincent was good student.

Vincent’s first studio In the period of 1875-1882, the Van Gogh family lived in the parsonage in Etten.

During this period, Vincent regularly visited for a few days, often because he needed money. Having failed as an art dealer, teacher, bookseller and pastor, Vincent returned to the family home for a longer period in 1881: the parsonage behind the church.

Vincent went full steam ahead to master the basic skills of the trade of artist: he reproduced prints, made sketches of farmers, sowers, landscapes and he studied books on anatomy and perspective. Although he wrestled with drawing, he did see his work continually improving. Here in Etten, he became acquainted with love.

He fell in love with his niece, Kee Vos, who was staying at the parsonage for a while after being widowed. However, she rejected Vincent.

In Etten, Vincent registered himself as a painter for the first time Wonderful stories, now being told in the Van Gogh Church, the former Dutch Reformed Church. He also had his first drawing studio here. Etten was a turning point in his life.

The first masterpiece From December 1883, Vincent van Gogh (he was then 30 years old) lived in Nuenen for two years (up to November 1885). He focused fully on painting when here.

In Nuenen, Vincent fell intensely in love with Margot Begemann, his roughly 12-year-older neighbour. This met with strong objections from Margot’s sisters and Vincent’s father. Despite the dramas that ensued, Vincent continued painting passionately. In Nuenen, he made no less than a quarter of his total oeuvre.

In particular, he drew and painted weavers and farmers in the field, and also regularly went out on trips to record the surroundings.

In the winter of 1884-1885, Vincent made a major series ‘heads of the people’, whereby he attempted to master the plasticity of the ‘rugged faces’. After an endless number of preliminary studies, he attempted his first large painting with multiple figures: The Potato Eaters. His first masterpiece.

Nuenen is a ‘Van Gogh outdoor museum’ Nuenen is an ‘outdoor museum’ with no fewer than 21 buildings and locations in the landscape with a direct relationship to Van Gogh’s stay there and his work. Stand where Van Gogh stood, see what he saw and painted. Then and now. Walk or cycle in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. You really can take that literally in Nuenen!

Don’t forget to visit the Van Gogh Church, Papenvoort 2a, to which Vincent’s father was attached as pastor; the old cemetery on the Tomakker in Nuenen, where Vincent’s father is buried and the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path.

The Original Works Vincent van Gogh grew up in the 19th century in a Protestant minister’s family, in which love for nature was important. Vincent’s life-long love for everything that grows and blooms originated in the rich countryside of Brabant. Although the 19th century was a time of cautious progress, Vincent was particularly fascinated by the traditional Brabant farming life. That is what he wanted to put on canvas.

Fascinated by the traditional Brabant farming life ’s-Hertogenbosch is the capital of North-Brabant. It is the largest fortified city in the Netherlands and the medieval city centre is one of the oldest and best-maintained inner cities in the country. Nobody will be bored in this exuberant city.

Located in the centre is Het Noordbrabants Museum. The only location where you can see original pieces by Vincent van Gogh.

HET NOORDBRABANTS MUSEUM Het Noordbrabants Museum is the museum for the highpoints of Brabant art, culture and history. Other Van Gogh locations in Brabant Breda: home of the Van Gogh family

Vincent’s grandfather

From his birthplace in Zundert, Vincent van Gogh regularly visited his grandparents who lived in Breda. His grandfather was the minister of the Grote Kerk and the KMA (Dutch Royal Military Academy) in Breda. Later, when he lived in Etten-Leur, Vincent frequently visited his rich godfather, ‘Uncle Cent’, who had an art gallery in Princenhage, in Villa Mertersem. Zevenbergen: at Jan Provily’s boarding school

When Vincent was 11 years old, his parents decided to send him to a boarding school in Zevenbergen in preparation for his secondary education. Before that, Vincent had attended school in his home town of Zundert and was home schooled by a governess, Anna Brirnei, and his father. Jan Provily commissioned the construction of the former boarding school, nowadays a private house. In August 1866, Vincent left the school and went to the HBS in Tilburg. Helvoirt: welcome to the Van Gogh family

There are various traces of Vincent van Gogh to be found in Helvoirt (Municipality of Haaren): his father’s Bible in the reformed church, the graves of an uncle and aunt of Vincent, his aunt’s house on the N65 and the former home of the Van Gogh family (the former parsonage). Helvoirt looks largely the same as it did in the time of Vincent van Gogh.

Eindhoven: Close to Van Gogh After staying in Drenthe, where he dwelt for three months, Vincent returned to Brabant and Nuenen was a breath of fresh air. The city of Eindhoven was important to Vincent. It was here where he could stock up on supplies and he had contacts with various art lovers and artists. Vincent made multiple drawings and paintings in Eindhoven.

Cycling through a painting The Brabant life and its landscape form the basis of the work by Vincent van Gogh.

His love for the simple folk, the countryside and the farmland; it all started in this wonderful province, which you can best discover by bike.

The Brabant Van Gogh Cycle Route There are dozens of (themed) routes centred on Van Gogh. One is not to be missed: the ´Van Gogh Cycle Route’, available from all Brabant Van Gogh heritage sites.

A handy booklet with removable routes and maps. The total length of the route is 335 kilometres, but the great thing is that it is divided into five attractive sub-routes in and around Zundert, Tilburg, Etten-Leur, Nuenen and ’s-Hertogenbosch. The routes follow the handy cycle route network and can be recognised by the Van Gogh cycle route signs.

The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path The designer, artist and entrepreneur Daan Roosegaarde is a wonderful example of a person who has been inspired by Vincent. There is a unique cycle path between Eindhoven and Nuenen, which is based on The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh!

The path is 600 metres long with luminous pearls in the asphalt that charge by day and light up at night. Together with fragments from the famous painting, they provide a subtle play of light and poetry. Techno poetry, as Roosegaarde himself calls it. A sensory experience!
