Published three times during the academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring), the HOWL is proud to celebrate and feature the wonderful gifts and talents of our Tomah Area School District students, faculty, and administration. Also included are news items keeping you informed of district events and leadership initiatives. Hat’s off to Mrs. Amanda Getgen, our Communications Coordinator, for her creative design skills curating the stories featured in this publication! And THANK YOU TASD Community of Learners so much for making our school district a wonderful place to learn and grow!

Tomah Area School District is proud to honor the Tomah High School graduating Class of 2021 at commencement exercises on May 29th. Not only do we have the opportunity to celebrate the educational accomplishments of our graduating seniors during their educational journey, we also commemorate new beginnings in their life chapter as they take the next step along a path that may include entry into the workforce, military, or furthering their education. Our best wishes to all graduates and many thanks to family members, teachers, coaches, and community members guiding, and advocating for their success along every step of their journey!

I want to thank our entire community for making this unprecedented year a success for our students! Together we cultivated both in-person and virtual learning experiences encouraging safe, healthy, and engaging educational experiences for our students. We’ve learned much from this experience and are well versed to navigate the future promoting High Quality Learning – Every Child – Every Day! Thank you for the opportunity to serve your children!

MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS OF ‘21 SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT

For the seniors: With this important chapter in our lives coming to an end we are bound to face hardships. Some of us are going straight to the workforce, others are going to serve our country, and many of us are heading to college. Some friendships may break while others continue. We tend to get overwhelmed with all that is going on. Just a gentle reminder --- breathe, it is okay! Life happens for a reason. Follow your dreams and goals. Finish the school year strong and embrace what comes next. This year has been hectic, but we made do with what we were given. It wasn’t the year we were expecting, but who doesn’t want a little bit of spice in our lives. I am happy I was able to be a part of this class.

You guys are amazing! Don’t doubt yourself and your abilities. I can’t wait to see and hear all of our accomplishments throughout the years.

For the community: I cannot thank you enough for your continuous support throughout our high school years. We as a class have been able to accomplish so much because of our community. I am proud to be a Tomah Timberwolf. While we may take our next steps elsewhere, Tomah will forever be our homes.

For the teachers: “A good teacher is like a candle --- it consumes itself to light the ways for others” - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. You all have been one of the biggest influences in our lives. You are constantly by our sides encouraging us to reach higher levels. By encouraging us to venture outside of our comfort zones, we have grown into creative citizens, ready to make a change in the world. You inspire us to think outside the box. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us. Thank you for the love and support you have given us throughout the years. We may not remember everything you taught us, but we will remember how special you are. You all are the definition of awesome!

T OURN A M E N T O F B OO K S Wa rren s E l em e nt ary March Madness took over Warrens Elementary as they held a Tournament of Books! 16 books, read and recorded by staff members, started the bracket. Students voted on their favorite book and the results whittled down to two finalists: The Book With No Pictures (read by Mrs. Tornga) and Custard Surprise (read by Mrs. Jen Robison).

The two finalists gave an admirable performance of their books in front of the students to earn their votes to be named the Tournament of Books Champ. The students were tough in their evaluations, but a winner had to be named. The Book With No Pictures (read by Mrs. Tornga) was deemed the winner by A SINGLE VOTE! Talk about a nail biter.

The students loved the friendly competition between staff members.

This was a great way to incorporate current events and stir excitement over reading.

TASD ELEMENTARY HERITAGE FAIR

The heritage fair is a project that is completed in remembrance of Wisconsin history. Students in 4th grade classes across the Tomah Area School District research topics about Wisconsin history and create a presentation to present to their class. Each presentation is evaluated by selected judges and a winner for each class is chosen to represent Tomah in the Regional Heritage Fair where they will present their project in front of many other area school districts.

High Quality Student Learning – Every Child – Every Day is Tomah Area School District’s mission statement.

Vital to delivering 21st century learning experiences for students are district school buildings. A comprehensive Facilities Assessment Report commissioned in Fall 2018 with HSR Associates served as the first step for review of our instructional centers. The district wide facility assessment noted specific areas of need unique to each building. With schools currently at student capacity and some aging facilities, now is the time to engage in deeper study of facility need to create a long-term facility plan for the future.

In Fall 2020, the Tomah Area School District Board of Education approved taking the next step addressing the state of educational facilities in the district by approving a Community Stakeholder Focus Group. The work of this representative group of Tomah Area School District community members centered on reviewing our educational, facility, and financial needs. The leadership outcome from the committee will be a recommendation to the Board of Education addressing district facilities needs for the future. The committee’s work promotes next steps in a facility plan where faculty and students will work and learn in a 21st century educational environment.

Spearheading the next step for prioritizing district facility needs and setting a vision for a master facility plan are approximately 25 community members representing private and public sector industries, teachers, students, the school board, and district administration. We are very grateful for their leadership and time the past five months in this important work focused on the future of the district.

Since February 23, 2021, meetings scheduled monthly and projected through June 2021, have focused on facility needs at specific building sites in the district. In February and March, the committee defined what a 21st century learning environment should look like, and then began the page | 6

work of reviewing and prioritizing facility needs at the middle school and high school. Elementary school planning and prioritizing needs activities took place in April 2021. You may find meeting presentations and agendas on the school district website navigating to the Board of Education section.

The Community Focus Group focus recommendation for a master facility plan is scheduled to be presented at the June 21st regular board of education meeting.

The board of education will then take time to review the outcomes from this community group for possible action in the near future. This is an exciting time for the Tomah Area School District with deeper study of the initial 2018 Facilities Assessment Report moving toward a recommendation from the dedicated members of the Community Stakeholder Focus Group. We look forward to May and June 2021 meetings as we take the next step in planning the 21st Century Learning environment for the students and faculty at Tomah Area School District.

LA GRAN GE E L E ME NTAR Y L OOKS FOR W A R D TO A NE W P L AYG R OU ND LaGrange students look forward to the planned improvements to their playground this fall. The Board of Education approved the project earlier this year. The playground is being funded by several contributing groups: LaGrange Safety Patrol, LaGrange Student Council, LaGrange PTO, Thomas B. Earle Trust, Frank G. Andres Trust, and Tomah Area School District.

*The Serenity Spot includes a bench with sensory games, spinning seat, rubber kick pad, and a variety of activities that can help calm students.

The original playground equipment will be replaced with similar structures but adding a ramp for students in wheelchairs to give them accessibility to several interactive boards. Adding to the adaptability of the updated playground is an inclusive swing and a *Serenity Spot. These additions will give accessibility and inclusiveness to students with special needs or disabilities.

The assignment: Your friend Alex wants a new pet to keep her company. Write her an email explaining why she should choose a potbellied pig. Her essay is written as follows:

To alex@email.com Subject The Perfect Pet Dear Alex, I know you’re stuck at home because of COVID 19, and I know you’ve been wanting a pet. I know the perfect pet for you! It’s starts with a P and ends with a G. If you guessed a pig then you are right, but no JUST a pig a potbellied pig!!

Alex my first reason why you should get a potbellied pig is because of their diet. They eat almost anything and some of their most favorite foods are fruits and vegetables.

Alex I heard that your sister is allergic to most animals, well guess what! You can still get a potbellied pig. The main reason why your sister is allergic is because of their fur, they have hair. So your sister is sneeze free!

Alex you should get a potbellied pig because they have a great personality. They love to cuddle, there very curious, there friendly affectionate, loyal, and clean. Potbellied pigs aren’t dirty they use mud as there sunscreen so they don’t go into the mud because they want to get dirty they go into the mud so they can cool off.

Alex after reading this I hope you want a potbellied pig as a pet. Also here’s a cool fact about potbellied pigs, potbellied pigs have poor vision, they also can’t see the sky because of how there eyes are place. Anyways I think that a potbellied pig is the perfect pet for you!

T HS STUDENT SE L E C T E D F O R P R E S T I GI O U S S T A T E H O N O R S M U S I C PR OJECT More than 1,100 students across Wisconsin auditioned for a spot the prestigious Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Program. Only 428 students were chosen to participate in the five ensembles; Tomah High is home to one of them!

Daniel Gordon, a THS sophomore, performs in Wind Ensemble, Show Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. He took on the challenge of auditioning for the WSMA State Honors Program in addition to his regular studies. Daniel impressed the judges with his performance and was selected for the project! page | 10

Daniel will attend an intensive four-day camp in preparation for his percussion performance in October at the Wisconsin State Music Conference in Madison.

THS YO UTH APPRENTICES HIP PRO GRAM

We are excited to offer an academic-based Summer School Program to our students. Both sessions will be staffed by our teachers in addition to *IMPACT teachers.

Tomah High School’s Youth Apprenticeship Program is gaining recognition for it’s growth over the last several years. This year, 44 High School students participated in the YA Program. It is designed to nurture students’ interests in trade or journey work by tailoring their high school credits to relate with their path of interest and offer on the job training while working toward their high school diploma.

The program is benefiting both local businesses as well as our high school students participating in the program.

Thor (below) is completing a Youth Apprenticeship in the STEM Pathway. He is learning skills that the Department of Workforce Development have established in the Engineering Drafting Unit.

We design our instruction to highlight a wide range of art mediums including drawing, printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and more. Students use the opportunity to experiment with tools, materials, and processes to discover what inspires them as artists.
