zidul - este incarcat cu semnificatii culturale si simbolice deosebite In teoria secolului al XIX-lea se face o distinctie intre zidarie si zid .

Zidaria este masiva, are grosime, se exprima atat la interior cat si la exterior ca un singur element, are puterea sa creeze adancime – deci spatiu.

- initial structura era masiva, exprimata pe fatada (Auguste Perret – garage Paris) - Gropius incearca sa modifice aceasta relatie structura/sticla si plaseaza cortina de sticla in fata structurii.

- la ora actuala structura dispare

- la inceputul secolului XX miscarea De Stijl a amestecat principiile elementelor structurale si ale celor solide prin folosirea panourilor de beton armat.

- ierarhia elementelor primare si secundare a fost abandonata din punct de vedere vizual.

intimitate si reprezentare

- zidul este elementul care defineste si delimiteaza spatiul interior - odata cu viata burgheza a secolului al XIX-lea spatiul interior devine un spatiu de reprezentare, ca spatiu al intalnirilor.

- art-nouveau-ul aduce ideea de reprezentare mai departe. Organicitatea elementelor grafice pune accentul de suprafata, pe efecte vizuale, in detrimentul atmosferei.

- spatiul se aplatizeaza, suprafata devenind importanta

zidul contemporan

- se observa o schimbare radicala in ceea ce priveste teoria suprafetei zidului. Daca placand de la Semper din secolul XIX de discuta despre invelisul zidului, de imbracaminte, acum termenii de refera mai degraba la placare.

- zidul s-a stratificat continuu, de la zidul masiv, la zidul compus (structura si umplutura) si pana la straturile actuale ale zidului, multe dintre ele ascunse, invizibile (termoizolatie, hidroizolatie, bariere de vapori, instalatii, structura si panotari)

Daca una dintre ele este apropiata corpului, simtita tactil si kinestezic (pardoseala), cealalta (tavanul) ramane un element vizual in mare masura.

- functia de acoperire (asemenea unui baldachin) - functia de suprapunere a nivelurilor functionale (etajele) - distinctia fata e elementul orizontal -zidul (acum pierduta din ce in ce mai mult)
