ethiopian satellite pre-school Gaba Kemisa, Ethiopia

Pre-school children have the dual need to be protected by a safe and welcoming space, but on the other hand not to be limited in their infinite imagination and pure mentality that knows no boundaries. To design an architecture that would interpret these two needs, we took the shape and structure of local schools, developing a building familiar to the local identity, and easily recognizable and replicable in the future by the local population. The main difference from existing schools, however, is that of incorporating the “covered courtyard” within the “school walls”, to create a free safe enclosed play space. The “open courtyard” remains outside a hinge between kindergarten and primary school, where sports activities are not only practiced by toddlers but also, and especially from older companions, more conform to that type of activity. To do this, the structure of the traditional trussed roof in eucalyptus wood is accompanied by a perimeter closure in the same material with a coffered system with infinite possibilities.

a civic library refurbishment Cuneo, Italy

The new Civic Library of Cuneo was commissioned by the local government to relocate and expand the province’s library collection which outgrew the precedent location. The second stage of the refurbishment began in 2015, concerns the clinic wing of the old city hospital, left unused for almost half a century. In the economic feasibility project stage, the main objective was to propose a contemporary solution in respect of the preexistence, combining new volumes to both expand the usable floor area and structural stiffening of the 18th-century vaults.

After several propositions, a central suspended mezzanine was approved as the optimal solution for the library users and the storage of volumes.

The design, however, has yet to reach a final morphology, due to ongoing structural in situ analysis and further approvals by the government.

Similar to the previous project, this design is aimed at the refurbishment of Palazzo Ricci in Pesaro as a library for the music school “Conservatorio Rossini”. The simple and contemporary design, at a close stage to realization, faced numerous interconnections with the pipework, electrical, and heating systems, asking for close to realism architectural visualization.

Vast conservation of the prexistent was the main focus of the design, including reuse of underground locals.

Access to the library will be guaranteed from the Riz Ortolani garden through a portico, “a covered and controlled access, a connection path between the conservatory and the Ricci palace dedicated to musicians. Through a new opening in the load-bearing masonry of the conservatory, it will be possible to access the atrium of the conservatory, guaranteeing covered and controlled access “.

auxetic climatic adaptive shells Turin, Italy

The auxetic metamaterials’ field of research is in constant expansion, and as engineering investigation keeps zooming with the magnifying glass on their microscopic properties, architects’ points of view zoom out, leading their exploration to buildings scales.

From a research that ranges in several fields of architecture and observes their compatibility with auxetic models, this thesis work analyzes, in particular, the possibilities for new sustainable applications, crisscrossing from bio-mimicry, metamaterials, computational design to contemporary solutions for passive housing systems, opening prospects on large auxetic models applications. In conclusion, the current studies on Climatic Adapting Building Shells uncover this work’s final objective, with a model proposal that synthesizes all the research work. A humble opening on auxetic materials for green futures.

The business process is based on the receipt of projects by the clients in the form of architectural and structural boards, and BIM models in Italian and English language.

The designs received were reworked and detailed according to the specifications of waterproofing required by the building, through the design of new plans, sections and three-dimensional models useful for definition of the necessary waterproofing products and their implementation. The new documents also allow to carry out metric calculations of the structures, obtaining precise results on the quantities of product needed. The secondary work carried out in the internship period involved the creation of summarizing tables of the analyzes on the project carried out, to be returned to the clients for evaluation, specialized personnel for the calculation of the estimate, and in case of success of sale of the project, useful on site as a construction guide for implementation.

Toad Hall John Andrews By the early 1970s, a different form of residential accommodation for students was being suggested. Key to the emergence of a new type that suggested a village or agglomeration of residential forms, often accompanied by the removal of the common dining hall and its replacement with self-catering kitchens within shared apartments.

The AUC in 1975 went so far as to describe this form of accommodation as being in its own class – ‘non-collegiate, regarding it ambivalently as distinct from colleges and halls.34 Informality and student independence were the driving forces behind this shift. At ANU it was a deliberate move by John Andrews that reflected his experience in designing the South Residences at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada (196568)

The student is a peculiar urban subject, characterized by his recent step into adulthood and new contact with the city as an individual, usually becoming more self-aware of his surroundings. Dwelling’s maintanace, different cultures, and circulation throughout the city are just a few of the many experiences that a student away from home may newly come to deal with.

When the lifestyle is subject to such a radical change it is of crucial importance providing a correct launch platform to project them into the city.

This can be achieved by designing a modern incubative habitat for them to share ideas and innovate both collectively and autonomously.

The concept takes shape as a vertical village, where apartments lie on shifting planes filled with “pocket” public and activity areas, and greenery. Like a nest on a tree, fresh air and sunlight are fundamental for a healthy body and peaceful mindset, therefore exterior and interiors are constantly merged and alternated between the horizontal and vertical circulation of the building.

The primary objective of the refurbishment consists into increasing the intensity of the urban structure and land use density to create a new area of the city dedicated mainly to living and commerce but assuring at the same time the presence of unoccupied spaces that allow a more pleasurable and breathable feeling in the district. By introducing different mixed zonings such as residential, workplace, leisure, and services, it is possible to make sure of having a consistent flow of people moving thought-out the area that, altogether with attractive architecture, has the potential of being a new tourist destination. The harbor area, in particular, due to the pre-existence of culturally significant buildings, can be mainly dedicated to commercial use becoming a whole new business area to attract both residents of nearby neighborhoods and visitors.
