UIHS TOBACCO PROJECT

Pregnancy & Commercial Tobacco Storytelling Group

Indian Health Services

Our NATIVE Tobacco Project offered a storytelling training & group last year. This training was offered to Tribal Elders and Pregnant UIHS clients in the community. Local storytellers Charlene Storr and Carol Larson shared the importance of storytelling and were able to share some of their own personal stories. They also encouraged and gave tips to community members on creating their own stories. The NATIVE Tobacco Team provided education on the dangers of commercial tobacco and resources for quitting.

The storytelling group was able to meet monthly, they were able to create stories based around their own personal experiences with commercial tobacco use. The stories that they created were so moving and inspiring. Their stories discussed the impacts using commercial tobacco products had on their health, but also the changes they made in their life when they found out they were expecting. Some of our moms shared some of the strategies they had taken to quit and how effective the strategies they had taken were. Elders shared information about how our next generations are our future and their health is of the utmost importance. The elders that were a part of our storytelling group were so helpful because they shared stories about how they had used commercial tobacco products for years and how hard it was to kick the habit; it was a big eye opener for our pregnant moms.

Our storytelling group was able to create 8 different stories during this period. One story that was shared by a local Yurok tribal member was: “I first started smoking when I was 11 years old. I used to steal lucky strike cigarettes from my parents. I quit smoking when I was pregnant, it would make me sick if I smoked but I still craved nicotine. I used to go to bingo with my mom just to be able to breathe in the air and ease my cravings, I smoked off and on for 40 years. I started having health problems and needed to have a major operation, so I had to quit. I started taking a cigarette and pretended to smoke it without lighting it. I would take a cigarette, put it to my lips and draw in deeply then blow out pretend smoke until I would feel satisfied. Eventually I didn't need to anymore. I've been smoke free for 2 years now.”

United Indian Health Services’, NATIVE Tobacco Project is providing a Pregnancy & Commercial Tobacco workshop that addresses issues such as dangers of smoking & using commercial tobacco during pregnancy and the dangers of second and third-hand smoke to children who are exposed. This workshop is available upon request, so please feel free to reach out to our organization if you would like to schedule this informational workshop.

Wildfire season is amongst us! How can this affect the air quality and what can you do?

How does wildfires affect the air quality?

• Smoke from wildfires contain chemicals, gases and fine particles that can harm your health. Breathing in fine particles in the air, which can reduce lung function, worsen asthma and any other existing heart and lung conditions, which may cause coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing.

How long can wildfire smoke stay in the air?

• Smoke from wildfires can linger in the atmosphere for up to a couple of weeks as it spreads. Smoke particles in the air chemically react with trace radicals (molecules with unpaired electrons) to undergo the oxidation process.

For more information on how to prepare for wildfire season in California visit the CAL Fire website at www.fire.ca.gov/prepare

FAMILY UNITY ACTIVITY

“Clay Pots”

Family UnityActivity

On May 8th, 2023 the Tribal TemporaryAssistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and the NativeAmerican Child Victim of Crime (NA) program, both of Community and Family Wellness, hosted a “Clay Pots” Family Unity Activity at the Howonquet Hall Community Center.

This month families gathered together to make clay pots. The first clay pots made by NativeAmerican tribes’date back to over 2000 years ago. They were made out of necessity for cooking in and storing food and water. Participants learned 2 methods of creating pots by hand; coiling and pinching. Participants were able to try either method to make their pot. Each family was given paint supplies to take home to paint their pots once they had dried.

The evening began with an opening prayer and dinner followed by families listening to this month’s story “You Hold Me Up” written by Monique Gray Smith. In appreciation of their participation, each family received a beautiful medicine wheel lamp along with a copy of this month’s book to take home. Those who completed surveys and provided photos of their clay pots were also able to select a lunch thermos as their participation incentive.

If you would like to join us at future Family UnityActivity events please register with the link provided on our flyers that are posted monthly on TDN social media sites and listed in the newsletter. These activities are open to NativeAmerican/Alaskan Native families residing in our service area with at least one child under the age of 18 living in the home.

HR Corner

Welcome Back! Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation’s Naa-dvtlh-nvsh-nee-dvn, Human Resources Department’s helpful tips to land that successful job you’ve been dreaming about! This month we will focus on Interviewing!

The Interview

So, you’ve been selected to be interviewed for a job, way to go! But, you’re not there yet, you still have to wow them. Here are some steps to make your interview go smoothly. Be ready!

Have all your tools ready for the interview to review if and when you need to refer to them: Resume – they should have it, but if they question something on it, it’s at your fingertips Application – if they ask you about something here, you can refer to it pretty fast Job History – double check the dates match in your application and resume References – Have these ready in case they ask you for them during the interview

Do some research; look up questions they could ask and write down how you would answer. The first question a lot of employers like to ask is “Tell us a little bit about yourself”. The more prepared you are, the better. These might not be the questions they will ask, but they could be similar. This will give you more confidence going to your interview.

Write your answers out, even if it’s obvious you’re reading them, it will show you came prepared to answer questions, and that you’re serious about getting the job.

Practice! (Mock Interviews)

Ask a friend, a family member, maybe even a current co-worker to help you do mock interviews. This helps immensely, will help put you at ease and boost your confidence once you do the real interview.

Your interviewer can give you invaluable feedback on your interviewing skills. You can make notes to not say a certain word or phrase too much, or to focus more on your skills and why you have what they’re looking for.

According to Forbes Magazine, preparing for an interview takes more than memorizing your resume and being able to speak about your past roles. Making a good impression and asking thoughtful questions will set you apart from other candidates. Read more about it in the link below:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/shelcyvjoseph/2019/03/30/interview-101-the-dos-and-donts Research (What do you know? Wow them!)

Look up the company on-line. Take notes on the company’s mission, vision statement, and goals. These are things interviewers like to hear, and will really tell them how serious you are about working at their company. This will be your moment to shine when you mention, “I have a question about your company’s mission statement and how this job directly affects this?”

They will probably say, “Great Question”, and it might raise some eyebrows that you took the time to look up anything about them.

These steps will help give you confidence and ease about how you interview, you got this!
