Welkom bij de Warming Up Kunstroute. Dwaal op je gemak over het terrein van Tolhuistuin en ontdek kunstwerken geïnspireerd door het klimaatvraagstuk. Op het hele Tolhuistuinterrein – het voormalige onderzoekslab van Shell – is een speciale kunstroute ingericht met werk van bijna 30 kunstenaars die je anders naar de wereld laten kijken.

QUEER AS THE OCEAN | Carlo De Gaetano 6

Queer as the Ocean is een experimenteel project dat generatieve AI gebruikt als hulpmiddel voor klimaatfictie, waarbij de relaties tussen de soorten binnen aquatische omgevingen worden onderzocht. De serie is gemaakt door Carlo De Gaetano in samenwerking met Midjourney en stelt zich een tijd voor waarin menselijke en waterecosystemen één zijn geworden. Door hun relatie te bevragen en te ensceneren als een fictieve modeshoot, wil dit experiment een speelse ruimte creëren waar de grenzen tussen mens en meer-dan-mens verdwijnen; beiden kunnen elkaar onder ogen komen, momenten van intieme verbondenheid vinden en acceptatie vinden in een toekomst waarin ze allebei zullen veranderen.

Queer as the Ocean is an experimental project that uses generative AI as a device for climate fiction, investigating interspecies relationships within aquatic environments.

The series was made by Carlo De Gaetano with Midjourney, and it imagines a time when human and water ecosystems have become one. By queering their relationship and staging it as a fictional fashion shoot, this experiment wants to create a playful space where the boundaries between human and more-than-human dissolve; both can face each other, find moments of intimate connection, and find acceptance in a future in which they both will change.

Title: What are we waiting for When do we act to solve the climate crisis? Do we wait until the water reaches our lips, or do we quickly ensure that we keep our feet dry?

The park bench was decaying in a council workshop. We nicely upcycled it into this installation.

What are we waiting for? was part of the Climate on the Street project. It was produced by Amsterdam Street Art.

Wanneer komen we in actie om de klimaatcrisis op te lossen?

Wachten we net zo lang totdat het water ons aan de lippen staat, of zorgen we er snel voor dat we droge voeten houden?

Het parkbankje lag te vergaan in een werkplaats van de gemeente.

We hebben het mooi upcycled tot deze installatie. Waar wachten we nog op? was onderdeel van het project Klimaat Op Straat. De productie werd uitgevoerd door Amsterdam Street Art.

OPLAADFIETS | Remon Baan

Door naar metaal te zoeken bij het grofvuil en door in de Amsterdamse grachten met magneten naar metaal te vissen, komt Remon Baan aan zijn materiaal. Hij maakt alles grondig schoon en geeft alles een nieuw leven: een nieuw verhaal. Hij begon ooit met het opknappen van fietsen, maar al snel ging zijn fantasie met hem op de loop en ontstonden zijn ‘headlight’-mannetjes. In zijn atelier bij de maak gemeenschap De Hoop last hij alles tot te gekke kunstsculpturen. Voor Warming Up maakt Remon een speciale Oplaadfiets.

By looking for metal in the rubbish and fishing for metal with magnets in Amsterdam's canals, Remon Baan gets his materials. He cleans everything thoroughly and gives everything a new life: a new story.

He once started by refurbishing bicycles, but soon his imagination got the better of him and his 'headlight' men were born. In his studio at the making community De Hoop, he welds everything into crazy art sculptures. For Warming Up, Remon makes a very special Charging Bike.

Freeling Waters is a collaborative project by designer Job Wouters and muralist Gijs Frieling. They paint antique wooden cabinets.

Once the transformation is complete, the cabinets can start moving again as free radicals exactly between the disciplines of their makers: those of applied and autonomous arts.

What is new is that for this commission they have also started to focus on the literal content of the cabinets. They use a very free arsenal of references to the state of the world with its climate crisis.

AH AH AH AH STAYING ALIVE | Job Wouters & Gijs Frieling

Freeling Waters is een samenwerkingsproject van ontwerper Job Wouters en muralist Gijs Frieling. Zij beschilderen antieke houten kasten. Na voltooiing van de transformatie kunnen de kasten zich opnieuw gaan bewegen als vrije radicalen precies tussen de disciplines van hun makers: die van de toegepaste- en autonome kunsten.

Nieuw is dat ze zich voor deze opdracht ook op de letterlijke inhoud van de kasten zijn gaan richten. Ze gebruiken een heel vrij arsenaal aan verwijzingen naar de toestand van de wereld met zijn klimaatcrisis.

Animal Insurrection (A.I.) stelt zich een toekomst voor waarin niet-menselijke dieren hun collectieve macht hebben gebruikt om de heersende soorten van de planeet aarde omver te werpen.

Dit drieluik in reliëfdruk is gemaakt met behulp van Midjourney met digitale en traditionele druktechnieken.

S.A.L.T is bedoeld om de effecten van verzilting op bodemkwaliteiten, architectuur en ecologie te onderzoeken. Een van de directe gevolgen van de zeespiegelstijging en bodemdaling is dat zout water in zoetwater- en grondstromen terechtkomt. Hoewel zoute grond als niet vruchtbaar voor landbouw wordt beschouwd, zijn er al experimentele boerderijen waar zouttolerante gewassen en specifieke planten, halofyten genaamd, worden gekweekt. In veel delen van de wereld waar regelmatige overstromingen een realiteit zijn, wordt al aan bio landbouw en aquacultuur gedaan. Het onderzoeksproject zal deze realiteiten observeren en verder kijken naar andere mogelijkheden om zout te gebruiken als architecturaal en artistiek materiaal, samen met de realtime en speculatieve interacties ervan in stedelijke en niet-stedelijke gebieden.

S.A.L.T is intended to look into the effects of salinization on qualities of soil, architecture and ecology. One of the immediate consequences of rising sea levels and ground subsidence is saline water entering flows of sweet water and soil. While saline soil is considered to be not fertile for agriculture, there are already experimental farms where salt tolerant crops and specific plants called halophytes are being grown. In many parts of the world where regular floods are a reality, biosaline farming and aquaculture are already practised.

The research project will observe these realities and look further into other possibilities of using salt as an architectural and artistic material together with its real-time and speculative interactions in urban and non-urban areas.

Animal Insurrection (A.I.) imagines a future in which non-human animals have used their collective power to overthrow the ruling species of planet Earth. This relief-printed triptych was created using Midjourney with digital and traditional printing techniques.

Langemeijer is kunstenaar met een achtergrond in de wereld van het poppentheater, Abels is kunstenaar/uitvinder gespecialiseerd in kinetisch werk. Het duo combineert poppenspel met moderne technieken zoals animatronics en zelf ontworpen software. Hiermee creëert ze levensechte schepsels en beeldende installaties in de publieke ruimte.

In de vensters van Tolhuistuin toont Langemeijer een aantal poëtische mechanische werken, een mix van verscheidene technieken o.a. uit het poppenspel, de filmindustrie en illusionisme. Door het ontbreken van schermen en het écht aanwezig zijn van de figuren en taferelen creëert dit een directe ervaring, waarmee elke toeschouwer zijn eigen verhaal kan maken.

Langemeijer is an artist with a background in the world of puppet theater, Abels is an artist/inventor specializing in kinetic work. The duo combines puppetry with modern techniques such as animatronics and self-designed software. With these, they create life-like creatures and visual installations in the public space.

In the windows of Tolhuistuin, Langemeijer shows a number of poetic mechanical works, a mix of various techniques from puppetry, the film industry and illusionism, among others. The absence of screens and the real presence of the figures and scenes creates a direct experience, with which each spectator can create his own story.

The Iconographic Collection is een serie provocaties die een aantal van de meest bekende gevolgen van klimaatverandering op onze watersystemen en relaties tussen soorten onderzoekt, door ze te bekijken aan de hand van beelden van bekende films en regisseurs.

Hoe we omgaan met het gevaar van klimaatverandering kan soms ontmoedigend en ontoegankelijk zijn door wetenschappelijk jargon en een gemanipuleerd discours door machtige industrieën zoals de fossiele brandstof industrie. Deze collectie probeert een ander perspectief aan het discours toe te voegen door de beelden van klimaatverandering in de context te plaatsen van het gemak en de vertrouwdheid van iconische films. Het gebruikt speelse provocaties om mensen uit te nodigen na te denken over verschillende verhaallijnen en mogelijkheden binnen hun eigen visualisatie van klimaatverandering.

The Iconographic Collection is a series of provocations that explores some of the best-known impacts of climate change on our water systems and species relationships by looking at them through images from wellknown films and directors. How we deal with the threat of climate change can sometimes be daunting and inaccessible due to scientific jargon and manipulated discourse by powerful industries such as the fossil fuel industry. This collection attempts to add a different perspective to the discourse by placing climate change imagery in the context of the ease and familiarity of iconic films. It uses playful provocation to invite people to think about different narratives.

De stijgende luchtvervuiling is vooral alarmerend omdat deze een van de grootste bedreigingen vormt voor het klimaat en het welzijn van levende wezens. Één oplossing zou kunnen zijn om algen in een synthetisch ecosysteem te gebruiken om menselijke lichamen in luchtzuiveringsfabrieken te veranderen.

Onderzoekers Iza Awad en Raoul Frese speelden met dit idee nadat ze in 2019 begonnen met onderzoek naar veganistisch leer gemaakt van bacteriële cellulose uit kombucha. Later voegden ze algen toe aan de cellulose die koolstofdioxide kunnen omzetten in zuurstof door middel van fotosynthese. Het resultaat is een fotosynthetische biologische gel die op de huid kan worden aangebracht, waardoor het lichaam in een fotosynthetische mens verandert.

The rising air pollution levels have become especially alarming as they pose one of the major threats to the climate and the well-being of living creatures. One solution could be to use algae in a synthetic ecosystem to turn human bodies into air purification factories.

Researchers Iza Awad and Raoul Frese toyed with this idea after they started looking into vegan leather made from bacterial cellulose derived from kombucha in 2019. Later, they added algae to the cellulose that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis. The result is a photosynthetic biological gel that can be applied to the skin, thereby transforming the body into a photosynthetic human.

Carolien Feldbrugge en Ilse van den Broek In 2016 organiseerde Deltares, een vooraanstaand water- en bodemonderzoeksinstituut dat de overheid adviseert, een inhouse policy hackathon om informatie te genereren over het vermogen van Nederland om multimeter zeespiegelstijging te weerstaan. Het uiteindelijke resultaat was de identificatie van 4 adaptatiestrategieën en -paden die ruwweg overeenkomen met die van het Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Carolien Feldbrugge en Ilse van den Broek hebben dit gevisualiseerd.

In 2016, Deltares, a leading water and soil research institute that advises the government, organized an in-house policy hackathon to generate information about the Netherlands' ability to withstand multimeter sea level rise. The end result was the identification of 4 adaptation strategies and pathways that roughly match those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Carolien Feldbrugge and Ilse van den Broek visualized this.

Onder de kop ‘Nederland (en de rest van de wereld) kan zo groen zijn’ bracht Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in januari 2020 haar visie op NL2120 naar buiten, een land waarin ‘de biodiversiteit bloeit, de natuur vrij spel heeft en het water de ruimte krijgt om te stromen’. De WUR creëerde een formidabel consortium, dat in februari 2023 110 miljoen euro van de Nederlandse overheid kreeg, waarmee NL2120 een van de grootste samenwerkingsverbanden ter wereld is op het gebied van natuurgerichte oplossingen.

Under the headline ‘The Netherlands (and the rest of the world) can be so green,’ Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in January 2020 released its vision of NL2120, a country in which ‘biodiversity flourishes, nature has free rein and water is given room to flow’. The WUR created a formidable consortium, which received 110 million euros from the Dutch government in February 2023, making NL2120 one of the largest partnerships in the world in nature-based solutions.

De zeespiegel stijgt mogelijk veel sneller dan tot dusver werd aangenomen. De huidige maatregelen zijn dan niet meer voldoende om droge voeten te houden. Is het tijd voor radicale plannen?

Sea levels may rise much faster than previously assumed. The current measures will then no longer be sufficient to keep dry feet.

Tim Hoogkamp, Gino Schier, Patrick van Zweden met Lukas Papenborg In 2300 komen we met het vliegtuig aan in de stad Apelhem, de grote stad op de Veluwe. Door de stijging van de zeespiegel met vijftien meter ligt de helft van Nederland onder water en loopt de kustlijn over de Veluwe. Het klimaat is subtropisch, kunstmatige intelligentie en robotisering hebben het grootste deel van het laagopgeleide werk overgenomen en grote bedrijven worden bestuurd door een superrijke elite.

De Nederlandse economie leunt op een toerismesector die luxe vakanties biedt. De dienstensector die hiervoor nodig is bevindt zich in het achterland rondom de megapolissen Apelhem, Eindhoven, Brussel en Nijmegen die met elektrosnelwegen zijn verbonden. Producten en goederen worden geïmporteerd, verwerkt en geëxporteerd via de volledig geautomatiseerde haven nabij Apelhem.

In 2300, we arrive by plane in the town of Apelhem, the big city on the Veluwe. As sea levels rise by 15 meters, half of the Netherlands is underwater and the coastline runs across the Veluwe. The climate is subtropical, artificial intelligence and robotization have taken over most of the low-skilled work, and large companies are controlled by a super-rich elite.

The Dutch economy leans on a tourism sector that offers luxury vacations. The service sector needed for this is located in the hinterland around the mega-polises of Apelhem, Eindhoven, Brussels and Nijmegen connected by electric highways. Products and goods are imported, processed and exported through the fully automated port near Apelhem.

Remco Rolvink, Berrie van Elderen, Eleni Chronopoulou, Maria Sachsamanoglou Nederland verandert dramatisch door een grote ramp, zoals dat de afgelopen 2000 jaar steeds gebeurd is. Deze ramp is het gevolg van springvloed, storm en heftige regenval waardoor het rivierwater geen kant op kan. Zwakke plekken in de kustbescherming breken, waardoor de delta vol stroomt. Ter voorbereiding op deze - voorspelde - gebeurtenis hebben havenbedrijven, gemeenten, waterschappen en zelfs Noordrijn-Westfalen de handen ineen geslagen en gezorgd dat de hoofdinfrastructuur, zoetwaterbekkens, landbouwgebieden en recreatieve zones verplaatst zijn naar Veluwe-Port. De macht verschuift van de nationale overheid naar grensoverschrijdende metropoolregio's. 650 jaar na de erkenning van de souvereine staat 'Nederland' is deze weer verdwenen.

The Netherlands in 2300 (plan D) The Netherlands changes dramatically due to a major disaster, as it has happened repeatedly for the past 2000 years. This disaster is the result of spring tides, storms and heavy rainfall that leave river water unable to move. Weak spots in the coastal defenses break, flooding the delta. In preparation for this - predicted - event, port companies, municipalities, water boards and even North Rhine-Westphalia have joined forces and ensured that the main infrastructure, freshwater basins, agricultural areas and recreational zones have been relocated to Veluwe-Port. Power is shifting from the national government to cross-border metropolitan regions. 650 years after the recognition of the sovereign state of "the Netherlands," it has disappeared again.

Deze handgetekende kaart van Kim Cohen, assistent-professor Geowetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, begeleidde het eerste artikel waarin het nieuws over de dreiging van versnelde zeespiegelstijging bekend werd gemaakt. ‘Zeespiegelstijging is een groter probleem dan we denken. En Nederland heeft geen Plan B’ van Rolf Schuttenhelm verscheen in het 5 februari 2019 nummer van Vrij Nederland.

'Sea level rise is a bigger problem than we think. And the Netherlands has no Plan B' by Rolf Schuttenhelm appeared in the Feb. 5, 2019 issue of Vrij Nederland.

Een waarschuwing: we kunnen de strijd tegen het water niet blijven winnen - omdat het water, zo blijkt uit de geschiedenis, altijd terugkomt, zolang we de kracht van het water onderschatten en zolang we economische belangen voorop stellen. Alleen de dreiging van een ongekende catastrofe kan ons bewust maken van wat ons te wachten staat als we nu geen oplossing weten te vinden voor de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Denk terug aan de Sint Elisabethsvloed van 1421. Nederland stroomt vol als een badkuip, het dagelijks leven wordt verstoord, de bevolking moet huis en haard verlaten. Als de zeespiegel blijft stijgen, zal een groter deel van het land geclaimd worden door het water, en is de schade niet te overzien.

A warning: we cannot keep winning the battle against water - because, history shows, water will always come back, as long as we underestimate its power and as long as we put economic interests first. Only the threat of an unprecedented catastrophe can make us aware of what awaits us, if we do not find a solution to the consequences of climate change now. Think back to the Saint Elizabeth Flood of 1421. The Netherlands flooded like a bathtub, daily life was disrupted, the population had to leave their homes. If the sea level continues to rise, more of the land will be claimed by the water, and the damage is incalculable.

Fanja Bouts

De Making Waves fanzine is geen catalogus van voltooide werken het is ook geen verslag van een samenwerking aan klimaatverbeeldingen, maar een kijkje in de voortdurende samenwerking tussen kunstenaars, ontwerpers en onderzoekers die gezamenlijk hun aandacht hebben gericht op de stijgende oceaan. Het is een serie publicaties ontwikkeld door Climate Imaginaries at Sea, een coalitie die is gevormd om mogelijke toekomsten in en rond het water te speculeren door middel van verschillende artistieke en participatieve onderzoekspraktijken.

The Making Waves fanzine is not a catalog of completed works. It is also not a record of a collaboration on climate imaginaries, but a glimpse into the ongoing collaboration between artists, designers and researchers who have collectively turned their attention to the rising ocean. It is a series of publications developed by Climate Imaginaries at Sea, a coalition formed to speculate possible futures in and around the water through various artistic and participatory research practices.

A largely distorted yet surprisingly ordered map of regular irregularities: A Dense Description of The Present Day History of The Future, is een 10 meter lang gebreid tapijt dat een absurde kaart van de wereld van vandaag voorstelt. Het werk, dat in samenwerking met het Textielmuseum in Tilburg is gemaakt, verkent sociale, culturele en milieukwesties door middel van humoristische personages en scènes die in elkaar overvloeien. De paden die elkaar kruisen in het wandtapijt leiden je door de elementen van de hyperkapitalistische wereld waarin we leven en de catastrofale gevolgen die dit vandaag en morgen met zich meebrengt. Door de vele verschillende paden te bewandelen, van het midden, waar god is afgebeeld als een pinautomaat, tot bijvoorbeeld een paar stappen naar rechts waar de huidige staat van de landbouw en bio-industrie wordt getoond, vind je orde in de kleurrijke donkere chaos.

A largely distorted yet surprisingly ordered map of regular irregularities: A Dense Description of The Present Day History of The Future is a 10 meter long knitted tapestry representing an absurd map of the world today. Collaboratively created with the Textile museum in Tilburg, the work explores social, environmental and cultural issues through humorous characters and scenes that flow into one other.

The paths crossing in the tapestry guide you through the elements of the hyper-capitalist world we live in, and the catastrophic consequences this brings today and will bring tomorrow. By walking the many different paths, from the centre, where god is depicted as an ATM-machine, to for example a few steps to your right where the current state of agriculture and bio-industry is shown, you find order in the colourfully dark chaos.

Deze beelden zijn een speelse kijk op de vraag: hoe zouden grote meesters uit het verleden vervuiling hebben weergegeven in hun werk? We vroegen Midjourney hoe Caravaggio een stilleven met plasticvervuiling zou schilderen, of hoe Artemisia Gentileschi zich zou voorstellen dat vrouwen een verzamelactie zouden leiden om een strand schoon te maken van plastic afval. Deze serie is oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor een onderzoeksproject over het beperken van de milieu-impact van de IT-sector.

These images are a playful take on the question: how would great masters of the past have depicted pollution in their work? We asked Midjourney how Caravaggio would paint a still life with plastic pollution, or how Artemisia Gentileschi would imagine women leading a collection effort to clean a beach of plastic waste. This series was originally created for a research project on reducing the environmental impact of the IT sector.

Een audio-sculptuur die de rol van Europa en Frontex in relatie tot (klimaat)-vluchtelingen aan de kaak stelt. Eén van de nieuwe ‘tools’ die Frontex in 2021 introduceerde, was een geluidskanon.

Dit is een wapen dat geluid van 162 decibel gericht ‘afvuurt’. Het volume van dit geluid staat gelijk aan een opstartende straaljager.

Dit geluid doet denken aan ons luchtalarm. ‘Birds don’t Sing, they Shout’ bevraagt de veelzijdigheid van de inzet van geluid, hoe het ook fungeert als wapen ter afschrikking.

De sculptuur is verbonden aan het twitteraccount van Watch the Med Alarm Phone, een hulporganisatie die informatie van mensen in nood verzamelt en hiermee druk uitoefent op de lokale autoriteiten die verantwoordelijk zijn.

An audio sculpture denouncing the role of Europe and Frontex in relation to (climate) refugees. One of the new ‘tools’ introduced by Frontex in 2021 was a sound cannon. This is a weapon that 'fires' sound of 162 decibels in a targeted manner. The volume of this sound is equivalent to a fighter jet taking off. This sound is reminiscent of our air raid alarm. 'Birds don't Sing, they Shout' questions the versatility of the use of sound, how it also functions as a weapon of deterrence.

The sculpture is linked to the twitter account of Watch the Med Alarm Phone, an aid organization that collects information from people in need and uses it to put pressure on the local authorities responsible.

Power of Water is een fotografieproject dat wordt uitgevoerd door Villa Zapakara in samenwerking met +597 Photography Foundation. Tijdens een tweedaagse sessie in Paramaribo leerden jongeren tussen de 10 en 13 jaar hoe ze de gevolgen van klimaatverandering in hun lokale omgeving konden vastleggen. Deze fototentoonstelling laat de resultaten zien van die workshop en hoe die tot stand is gebracht door jongeren in Amsterdam met hulp van Dorothy Blokland.

Het programma, dat loopt tot 2024, maakt gebruik van artistieke en participatieve onderzoekspraktijken om toekomstbeelden te schetsen met betrekking tot water.

Power of Water is a photography project implemented by Villa Zapakara in collaboration with +597 Photography Foundation. During a two-day session in Paramaribo, youth between the ages of 10 and 13 learned how to capture the effects of climate change in their local environment. This photo exhibition shows the results of that workshop and how it was created by young people in Amsterdam with help from Dorothy Blokland.

The program, which runs until 2024, uses artistic and participatory research practices to sketch future images related to water.

An Augmented Reality artwork with five different digital gardens scattered across the Tolhuistuin grounds. Together they form a pop-up book, so to speak: from extinct flowers, lost long ago, to the return of gray wolves to the Netherlands; from a forest that heals, to flowers in the sky.

Een Augmented Reality kunstwerk met vijf verschillende digitale tuinen verspreid over het Tolhuistuinterrein. Samen vormen ze als het ware een pop-up boek: van uitgestorven bloemen, die lang geleden verloren zijn gegaan, tot de terugkeer van grijze wolven in Nederland; van een bos dat geneest, tot bloemen in de lucht.

Je kunt het natuurlijke leven in vergane en bloeiende vorm verkennen, zoals ze werden afgebeeld door ontdekkingsreizigers, bewaard in museumcollecties over de hele wereld. Dit kunstwerk kun je ervaren door met je telefoon de QR-code te volgen. Elke marker opent een nieuwe digitale omgeving in je Instagram app.

Amen voor de Aarde is een poëtische audiotour waarbij Eva van Manen je muzikaal door Tolhuistuin meeneemt langs de verstopte (keramieken) wezentjes van Isa van Lier, die je vanuit de bomen verwelkomen! De audiotour bouwt voort op Eva's nieuwste EP 'Le Hérou’. Afgelopen winter bracht Eva tweeënhalve maand door in het bos in de Belgische Ardennen waar ze ’Le Hérou’ maakte: een EP waarop fieldrecordings, zachte gitaren, troostvolle liedteksten en baspartijen gemengd worden tot een serie troostvolle liedjes waarvoor de natuur de grote inspiratiebron vormde.

Amen for the Earth is a poetic audio tour where Eva van Manen musically takes you through the Tolhuistuin past Isa van Lier's hidden (ceramic) creatures, welcoming you from the trees! The audio tour builds on Eva's latest EP "Le Hérou. Last winter, Eva spent two and a half months in the woods in the Belgian Ardennes where she made 'Le Hérou': an EP on which field recordings, soft guitars, comforting lyrics and bass parts are mixed into a series of comforting songs for which nature was the great inspiration.

Onze samenleving is verslaafd aan licht en snelheid. Het trage, het stille, het duistere blazen we weg met lampen en lawaai. Het is ons denken ingeslopen, onze taal, onze cultuur: hoe donkerder hoe slechter. Talloze dieren raken gedesoriënteerd omdat ze in een oogverblindende wereld niet langer kunnen navigeren op het kompas van de sterrenhemel. Deze gekapte lantaarnpaal is een ode aan de duisternis. Geen baken van licht, maar een baken van donker, ter herwaardering van de duisternis.

Our society is addicted to light and speed. The slow, the quiet, the dark we blow away with lights and noise. It has crept into our thinking, our language, our culture: the darker the worse. Countless animals become disoriented because in a dazzling world they can no longer navigate by the compass of the starry sky. This felled lamppost is an ode to darkness. Not a beacon of light, but a beacon of darkness, in revaluation of the dark.

In ‘Flipping the Bird’, een fotografieproject van Jaap Scheeren, word je meegenomen in een verhalend visueel verslag van een lange en intensieve wandeling in de duinen. Er ontstaat een bijzondere, surrealistische, humoristische en confronterende dialoog tussen mens, flora en fauna. Het werk houdt de kijker een spiegel voor en laat op zowel bloedserieuze als absurdistische wijze zien hoe we ons verhouden tot de natuur.

Change your perspective and look through fresh eyes. ‘Flipping the Bird’, a photography project by Jaap Scheeren, takes you through a visual narrative report of a long and intensive walk in the dunes. An unusual, surreal, humorous and confrontational dialogue is created between mankind, flora and fauna. The work holds up a mirror to the viewer, giving us a deadly serious yet absurd impression of how we as mankind relate to nature.

Our city is finite. If we look at water level predictions, Amsterdam will be under water within 250 years. The maximum potential sea level rise is 70 meters, if all the land ice on our planet melts. In Tolhuistuin, Collectief Walden is building a memorial that changes along with the rising water level. How do we commemorate a disaster that awaits us? And how does it affect the choices we make today?

Waarom Nederland een klimaat-burgerberaad nodig heeft. Politiek moet je niet te veel aan politici overlaten. Daar zijn onze problemen namelijk te ingewikkeld voor. Vooral een veelkoppig monster als klimaatverandering vraagt om een veelkoppige aanpak. Steeds meer landen werken daarom met burgerberaden, waarin inwoners uit alle hoeken van de samenleving samen tot oplossingen komen voor de grootste problemen van onze tijd.

Deze muurtekening van Bureau Burgerberaad en Creative Beards laat zien hoe een burgerberaad werkt en waarom ze cruciaal zijn voor een sterke democratie en een gezonde planeet.

Why the Netherlands needs a climate citizens' council. Politics should not be left too much to politicians. After all, our problems are too complicated for that. Especially a multi-headed monster like climate change requires a multi-headed approach. This is why more and more countries work with citizens' councils, in which residents from all walks of life work together to find solutions to the biggest problems of our time.

This wall drawing by Bureau Burgerberaad and Creative Beards shows how citizens' councils work and why they are crucial for a strong democracy and a healthy planet.

Van 21 oktober tot 19 november 2023 bouwt Lijm-lab de ruimtes van Pexpo om tot een groot atelier. Vier weken lang draait, rolt, valt, zoeft en stuitert het in Pexpo. In dit Kunstmachine ontdekatelier kan jong en oud op zoek naar de kunstenaar en techneut in zichzelf.

Samen met de kunstenaars van Lijm-lab onderzoek je hoe je iets in beweging krijgt zonder batterij of oplader. Volwassenen en kinderen mogen zelfstandig experimenteren met alles wat beweegt.

Je speelt met zwaartekracht en verbeeldingskracht. Samen met de Tolhuistuin organiseren we tijdens het Warming Up festival op zondag 5 november de familie-workshop: Kunstmachine.

From October 21 to November 19, 2023, Lijm-Lab is transforming Pexpo's spaces into a huge studio. For four weeks, Pexpo will spin, roll, fall, whoosh and bounce. In this Art Machine discovery studio, young and old can search for the artist and engineer in themselves. Together with the artists from Lijm-Lab, you'll investigate how to get something moving without a battery or charger. Adults and children can independently experiment with anything that moves.

FESTIVAL We Are Warming Up. Net als de rest van de wereld. Maar wat betekent dat? En hoe gaan we ermee om? We hebben een nieuwe taal nodig die het hart raakt en tot de verbeelding spreekt. Daar gaat Warming Up Festival over.
