Chick-fil-A, which opened two new restaurants in the Toledo area this year, found itself embroiled in the nation’s same-sex marriage debate this summer after company president Dan Cathy said he backs the traditional family unit.

Proponents of same-sex marriage immediately boycotted the restaurant chain while activists who agree with Cathy organized “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Days,” encouraging people to support the chain. Both sides made appearances in Toledo.

Also controversial was a May proposal to designate the Downtown intersection of Erie Street and Jefferson Avenue as Joe Wicks Way. Councilman Steve Steel proposed the idea to honor the late Wicks’ activism promoting AIDS awareness, prevention and treatment in the early 1990s. Opposition arose from Downtown business owners and others who pointed to Wicks’ unpaid property taxes, unkempt property and abrasive personality as reasons against bestowing the honor. The debate, tabled for now, could spark legislation that will dictate criteria for future street-naming.

Toledo hosted many events that drew visitors from far and wide.

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) brought a world-class collection of portraits by 19th-century French painter Édouard Manet, which drew visitors from 38 states to the only North American stop for the exhibition.

bringing the Glass Arts Society conference to Toledo in June, which drew thousands of glass artists to the Glass City.

The conference was especially meaningful as it commemorated the 50th anniversary of the studio glass movement, which traces its roots to Toledo.

In August, Toledo Free Press publisher Tom Pounds and I had the chance to ride the USS De Wert from Detroit to Toledo with a delegation of Toledo leaders and media as part of Navy Week Toledo. It marked the first time U.S. Navy ships had been in the Great Lakes since 1999 and the first time Toledo has been chosen as a Navy Week city. Five ships docked in Toledo that week, offering free tours and drawing more than 20,000 visitors.

Also in August, the third annual Toledo Pride event took place Downtown, drawing nearly 10,000 people, doubling the 5,000 visitors the event drew in 2011. About 2,500 attended the inaugural Toledo Pride in 2010.

Since we love seeing new voices emerge to harmonize with successful established ones, Toledo artist Kimberly Adams topped our list of arts newsmakers this year.

Adams moved to the Glass City from Tampa, Fla., in June 2011, but is part of a group of recent Toledo transplants that has already had a huge impact on the local arts community. Adams founded Tart Projects, organized Toledo’s first PechaKucha Night, joined founder Timothy Gaewsky as an early member of Launch Pad Cooperative and more.

Another new arts initiative, You Are Here Toledo, took the form of a series of 100 colorful “dots” that popped up on Glass City sidewalks from May to November, marking points of interest around the city. Scanning QR codes with a smartphone provided information about the location as well as the local artist who designed the dot.

The innovative project, a collaboration between the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Toledo and the Arts Commission, engaged visitors and longtime residents alike in learning

more about the city’s hidden gems. The free smartphone application inspired a “collect-them-all” challenge.

The project was coordinated by AIGA Toledo president and Colorado native Jenn Stucker, a former “new voice” in the Toledo arts scene.

One of the year’s biggest sports stories was the University of Toledo cracking the Top 25 in national football polls for the first time since 2001. The Rockets drew national attention for pulling off an upset win over then-unbeaten No. 21 Cincinnati. Although the team ultimately lost to Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, first-year head coach Matt Campbell’s one-game-at-a-time philosophy seems to be working.

Another highlight was the number of local high school teams that played for state championships this year. Central Catholic football and Perrysburg girls soccer both claimed state titles, while Whitmer football and Sylvania Southview boys soccer fell just short.

For the fourth year in a row, Toledo Free Press was named best weekly newspaper in its 100,000-plus circulation class by the Ohio chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, an honor we aim to defend as best as we can moving forward.

The media landscape in Toledo looks much different today than it did 12 months ago. FOX Toledo and WTOL-11 merged newsrooms, FOX Toledo news anchor/executive producer Shaun Hegarty moved to former rival WTVG-TV, Channel 13, controversial talk radio host Brian Wilson and general manager Andy Stuart separated from 1370 WSPD and Cumulus boomeranged from awarding Star 105 morning host Andrew Z a multiyear contract in June to abruptly firing him six months later on Dec. 26.

Hollywood Casino Toledo General Manager Richard St. Jean has plenty to be cheerful about as the casino, which opened May 29, marks seven months in business.

Business is brisk while concerns about increased crime, traffic jams and gambling addictions have subsided.

“Early on, we did our best to assure local residents, businesses and government that a lot of what you hear [about casinos] isn’t necessarily true and won’t materialize,” St. Jean said. “[Rossford has had] virtually no incidences associated with those fears, aside from increased traffic on the Toledo side obviously coming up and down 75. And we’ve heard the same thing from [Toledo Police] Chief [Derrick] Diggs and [Toledo]Mayor [Mike] Bell, so all of our efforts to educate and inform everyone early on have now been validated by what they are actually seeing on a dayto-day basis. We’re very pleased they feel more comfortable with this neighbor in their backyard.”

Penn National Gaming, which operates the casino, is happy with the property’s performance, particularly the volumes, St. Jean said.

“Table games, poker and food and beverage in particular have far exceeded our expectations and slots is actually right around where we expected it would be,” St. Jean said.

Gamblers wagered a total of $126.7 million at Toledo’s casino in November, including $113.2 million on slot machines and $13.9 million on table games. Total wagers were down about 9 percent from the $138.8 million wagered in October, which was also down about 9 percent from the $153.1 million wagered in September, according to monthly reports from the Ohio Casino Control Commission. Taxable revenue in November was $13.6 million, down from $14.8 million in October, $15.9 million in September, $17.4 million in August, $19.1 million in July and $20.4 million in June, the casino’s first full month of operation.

St. Jean said he is proud Toledo’s casino fulfilled its pledge to hire 90 percent of its workforce locally and to promote from within. So far, 55 team members have been promoted once, six have been promoted twice and two have been promoted three times.

The casino is exploring adding more entertainment options beyond gaming, such as a riverfront concert series, car show or food and wine festival.

“There’s still somewhat of a perception I hear that you must be a gamer to come to the casino, which is far from the truth,” St. Jean said.

Director of Food and Beverage Marc Guastella said expectations were high for the casino’s four eateries, but he feels all have delivered.

Guastella hopes Final Cut Steak & Seafood will earn a Forbes four-star rating when the next report is released in spring 2013.

“Four stars is very achievable for us and I’m confident we can achieve that,” Guastella said.

Brenda Schwind, vice president of the Rossford Business Association (RBA), said the casino is a “great partner.”

“Everybody I’ve talked to, even people who were really leery of the casino coming in, are impressed with the facility and I’ve heard nothing but good comments,” said Schwind, of Directions Credit Union. “I think people have been very surprised. They’ve proven to be a very good neighbor.”

Rossford Mayor Neil A. MacKinnon III agreed.

“I’ve been in business quite a while now and I know these guys are sincere and they are for real,” MacKinnon said during a recent Rossford City Council meeting. “I consider them friends and I consider them part of the fabric of the community. Their participation in the RBA has been phenomenal.”

Casino answers critics with seven months of success

Mayor Bell also feels the casino is a positive asset, said Public Information Officer Jen Sorgenfrei.

“The revenues are definitely aiding the city budget and they’ve been a good corporate citizen, contributing to local philanthropy and supporting community organizations,” Sorgenfrei said.

“They are still finding their equilibrium, but remain a positive asset to the region.”

There hasn’t been a major influx of crime like many feared, agreed Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss Sr. and Sgt. Joe Heffernan, who is public information officer for the Toledo Police Department.

“Whenever you have more people, you’re going to have more issues, but we haven’t had any major incidents that you can point your finger at and say, ‘That’s the casino’s fault,’” Goss said. “It’s still new. We’re still monitoring. We’ll have to wait and see.

There could be good and bad down the road, but as far as law enforcement, it hasn’t really affected Rossford directly, which we’re thankful for.”

“I keep hearing people call them good neighbors, like a cliché, but truly they are,” Goss said. “I think we’re really fortunate to have the casino here.”

Bill McFarland, interim superintendent of Rossford Schools, said the district has had no issues with crime or traffic, as some parents feared.

“We really have seen no effect. We hardly know it’s there to be honest with you,” McFarland said.

“The hysteria and paranoia I think has long been forgotten. I think it’s functioning really well and I don’t think it’s having any negative effect on our community at all.”

Larry Eilert, owner of Larry’s Auto Center in Rossford, said he’s pleased with an uptick in business the casino has created.

“I’ve gotten more customers from there, especially the employee side of it,” Eilert said. “There is more traffic — but it’s a good traffic, not a bad traffic.”

hasn’t helped business as much as they were hoping, but it hasn’t hurt either.

“Really nothing has changed,” Bockelman said. “We thought it would be better. But the people who do come here are faithful. We get some of the casino workers later at night. Very, very seldom the out-of-towners. The locals will sometimes meet here and then go down there for a little gambling, some cocktails, watch a concert and then come back here. So that’s fun.”

Rossford City Councilman Larry Oberdorf Sr. said the casino has proved detractors wrong.

“A lot of people had apprehensions about Penn coming into this community and I think Penn has answered with good qualification all of those apprehensions,” Oberdorf said during a recent Rossford City Council meeting.

“We haven’t had the traffic problems we had assumed or any of the other illicit things some people thought would happen. It’s really a professional organization. I’m extremely happy to have them in our locale.”

Representatives from the Lucas County Board of Elections (BOE) and the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office were satisfied with the board’s administration of the Nov. 6 national elections and are optimistic about the board’s future, HUSTED despite recent controversies.

On Aug. 12, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that he would assign a “special master” to each party within the BOE to oversee daily operations. This decision was in response to the board’s failure to produce position descriptions and a bipartisan organizational chart.

In 2012, as of press time, 34 people have died as a result of criminal homicide in Toledo.

Seven of those people were children, according to a Toledo Police spokesman.

The number of those who le died in 2011 as a result of crimd o F r ee P inal homicide was also 34. That number includes three juveniles: Timothy Blair, 14, Deadrick Rocker, 17, and Montelle Taylor, 17.

Among the children who died in 2012 were Paige, Logan and Madalyn Hayes, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a November murder-suicide by the children’s grandmother and uncle.

Also among the seven children is Ke’Ondra Hooks, 1, who was shot in the head Aug. 9.

She and her sister, Le’Ondra, who survived, were in their home at the Moody Manor complex when bullets came inside and struck them.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan of the Toledo Police Department said it’s possible that the shooters believed someone from a different gang was inside, but added, “Why they were shooting into the home, I don’t know if we’ll ever fully know why.”

Toledo-native rappers Jason Jensen and Sik Da Don Sikosa composed a song, “I Thought They Cared,” about the Hooks children and also performed at HipHop4Peace, a benefit for the victims’ family.

Sikosa said he wished more people would have come out to support the family.

“We can’t take life when life hasn’t even started. We have to give these kids an opportunity. … We could have killed somebody who would be the next president or would have cured AIDS,” he said.

Heffernan said that overall, there seems to be a decrease in the number of deaths from gang violence but an increase in deaths from domestic violence.

At press time, nine children had died in Lucas County as a result of abuse or neglect in 2012, said Dean Sparks, Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) executive director.

Every April, LCCS organizes a memorial for the children who died from abuse or neglect in the previous year. Although the three teens who died from street violence in 2011 were remembered at the most recent event, “At our last memorial, we didn’t have any children that had died of abuse or neglect,” Sparks said.

Many of the children were not connected to LCCS, so it’s hard to figure out what happened or why the number spiked from zero to nine, Sparks said.

Many of the children who died from abuse or neglect in 2012 were 1 or younger, he said, adding that many babies who die from abuse are shaken.Usually, parents who shake babies are reacting to “stressors,” Sparks said.

“Babies cry and it’s normal sometimes to get frustrated with them. What’s not normal is to shake them,” he said.

calling 911 if there are indications of abuse or neglect.

For parents, he recommended seeking support if they become too frustrated.

“Call a friend or a relative and have them come take care of the baby or give them the baby,” he said. “We’re at the point where we’re saying, ‘Bring the baby to us if you’re so frustrated.’”

Sparks added, “Clearly, not all these kids were shaken. We had the [Hayes] murder-suicide. I don’t know how you make sense of that. … I don’t know how you make sense out of a gang shooting into an apartment and hitting two babies.”

“We as a community need to mourn those losses … just as we see in Connecticut, which has prompted us as a nation to think about how we deal with guns, how we deal with mental illness,” he said.

“We really want people to reach out to each other. We want people to call us if they’re concerned and if a parent finds themselves with no other options but to hurt their babies, bring them to us we’ll take care of them. … Our community can’t take any more child deaths. In November, Kaptur faced Republican Samuel Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, and Libertarian Sean Stipe. She earned about 73 percent of votes in that race.

“It’s gonna be a rough next couple years and the way I see it is we have ourselves to blame because we settled for the status quo,” Wurzelbacher said of the 2012 results.

Also in 2012, incumbent Sherrod Brown defeated Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel in the race for U.S. Senate. Brown earned about 50 percent of the BROWN vote compared to Republican Mandel’s 45 percent.

Independent Scott Rupert had about 5 percent of the votes.

Brown, who has been a senator since 2007, cited the auto rescue as a triumph during his previous term.

“All the Toledo-area manufacturers were in trouble and people thought their whole way of life was going to collapse,” he said. “We went to bat for them.”

In addition to the presidential election, 2012 saw several dramatic races both in Ohio and in Toledo, with many incumbents keeping their seats.

In Lucas County, there were seven levies on the ballot. Voters passed all but two: Toledo Public Schools’ (TPS) 4.9-mill levy with about 52 percent of votes against it and the City of Toledo Recreation 1-mill levy with about 54 percent against.

After results were in, Lisa Sobecki, president of the TPS Board of Education said, “Of course, I’m disappointed. … On the other side, I saw how close the numbers were. I can see we are making some ground,” She also said the district will likely need to pursue another levy in the future and that she would work to “make Columbus aware of our needs” when it comes time for state budget plans.

The Imagination Station’s 0.17mill tax levy ended up passing once an official recount went through. The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s 2.9-mill levy, the Metroparks’ 0.9-mill levy, the Lucas County Mental Health

& Recovery Services’ 1-mill levy and the Lucas County Children Services’ 1.85-mill levy also all passed.

Before the election, the levy glut prompted Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken to propose the potential idea of an umbrella levy or combining the “back of the house operations,” like the human resources and administration of different agencies.

“It’s time for the commissioners to have this conversation about if there isn’t a better way to do it,” he said. “This ballot is very levy-heavy and for the first time, there will be real winners and losers when there shouldn’t be.”

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur also had a busy year. In March, Kaptur, who has 30 years of experience in Congress, defeated U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich in the primaries for the recently redrawn District 9. Kaptur’s district now includes parts of Cleveland.

“I have great loyalty to my home community, but I also know I have a responsibility to the new parts of the district,” she previously said. “It’s exciting to go into a new community and meet new people and learn what their concerns are.”

In the beginning of 2012, the Toledo area had one Chick-fil-A. As the year comes to an end, the community now has three.

“Because of the receptivity of the Toledo community, [Chick-fil-A] felt like we needed to grow by 200 percent in a very short amount of time in order to service the demand for our product,” said Jonathan Winn, who operates the 4260 Sylvania Ave. location, just outside Westfield Franklin Park Mall, where another is located.

Mike Herrick, who used to run the Chick-fil-A in the mall food court, now operates the 10315 Fremont Pike, Perrysburg, location. Both new locations opened in November and a new owner came into the mall spot, which opened in 1984.

Each location has more than 4,000 square feet and includes a play area and double drive-thru lanes.

“We have been very busy. It has been sustainable, which is awesome, so it has been a very good move,” Herrick said.

Winn said his store sees about 4,000-5,000 customers per day. He encouraged patrons to be patient as new employees learn the ropes. About 200 new employees were hired between the two locations.

Herrick was still at the mall location during Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on Aug. 1.

Randolph Linn is behind bars after pleading guilty to federal arson and related crimes committed at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, but local Muslim leaders are concerned there may be more people like him out there.

Linn, a 52-year-old truck driver and ex-Marine from St. Joe, Ind., was initially charged with one count each of intentionally damaging religious property and using fire or explosives in commission of a felony for the Sept. 30 arson attack. A third charge, of using a firearm to commit a crime of violence, was added by a grand jury Dec. 18.

He pleaded guilty to all three counts in U.S. District Court in Toledo on Dec. 19 as part of a binding agreement and could be sentenced to 20 years in prison in April. He will also be required to pay a $250,000 fine and restitution that may exceed $1 million.

“Yes, justice has been served and the Islamic Center will be rebuilt and we will meet inside it and continue to do so. But the actual problem hasn’t been dealt with,” said S. Zaheer Hasan, a spokesman for the United Muslim Association of Toledo.

“There’s a bad feeling, first of all because of the environment, which is becoming hateful,” he said. “The arson attack was an isolated incident, but it was a product of that hatred.”

Damage to the mosque from the blaze and from the building’s sprinkler system and firefighters’ hoses is estimated at $1.5 million, Islam said, adding that insurance is covering the expenses.

Repairs are scheduled to be completed by the end of March. In the meantime, the mosque is holding Friday prayers at a Rossford indoor sports complex — with added security — and the center’s Islamic school meets at Owens Community College.

Islam said surveillance cameras showed Linn, wearing a camouflage hat and sweatshirt, walking through the mosque with a pistol in his left hand.

He left a beer can in the women’s hijab room, she said, before pouring gasoline on the carpet in the main prayer room and igniting it.

“Had somebody been there, I dread to think about what could have happened because he had a gun. If people had been there, it might have been like the [Oak Creek, Wis.] Sikh temple shooting.” O

He brought three firearms and stopped along the way to fill three gas containers, authorities said.

Linn said in court that he had hauled his truck many times past the domed mosque at the junction of Interstates 75 and 475.

According to Islam, when Zouhary asked Linn if knew any Muslims personally, he replied, “No, I only know what I hear on the radio and see on Fox News.”

He told the judge that Muslims are “going around killing us,” Islam said.

Zouhary told Linn that the attack on the mosque was an attack on all places of religion.

“You are no better than the terrorists or extremists you sought to punish,” the judge told Linn.

Islam said she believes irresponsible media coverage fanned Linn’s hatred and distorted his view of her faith.

“The way our democracy works is 12 people are elected to Council, and when seven of them agree on something, that’s how it is done. Clearly, decisions are made based on feedback from the community, and there was a lot of concern over the Joe Wicks decision.”

Waniewski said he intends to introduce legislation that will establish a policy for naming streets, intersections, bridges, parks and the like in 2013.

He said, “I’ve gotten probably threequarters of a way through that. I want to check one other city. But we’ve pulled the current legislation in Cincinnati and Cleveland. The process they follow is somewhat similar.” O

Veterans Matter and new VA Clinic make progress in 2012

Two groups in the area have made significant progress during 2012 in providing health care and housing for veterans.

On Sept. 19, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) opened its new Community-Based Outpatient Clinic.

The new facility is located at 1200 S. Detroit Ave., and, at 66,000 square feet, roughly doubles the size of its previous Glendale Avenue location.

The clinic had its official ribboncutting ceremony Nov. 9 during Veterans Day weekend and featured speakers Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and Brig. Gen. Mark E. Bartman, an assistant adjutant general of the Ohio Air National Guard. The event also featured the unveiling of the “Faces of Heroes” wall, a large art piece featuring the photos of 1,500 local veterans.

The ceremony was a huge success for the clinic and about 300 people attended, according to Derek Atkinson, VA public affairs officer.

The clinic is administered by the VA Ann Arbor Health system. Some of the new services offered at the fa-

Many of the established VA services are still offered, such as mental health treatment, and others have been upgraded for ease of access. Virtual medical services, such as a direct link to the Cleveland Veterans Benefits office, utilize technology to eliminate travel and communication lag.

Atkinson said he is excited for the future of the facility and the additions that will be made over time.

“We designed the clinic with expansion in mind,” Atkinson said.

The VA clinic was not the only Toledo veterans group to receive a boost over the past year — another was aided by the power of rock stardom.

The nonprofit group Veterans Matter assists veterans who are screened and accepted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs Supported Housing program (HUD-VASH). The HUD-VASH program provides housing for veterans in need, but requires a rent deposit up front. Ken Leslie recognized this was a problem for many veterans, and co-founded Veterans Matter in February as a way to raise funds for the

Hill has been a longtime advocate for veterans, and when he learned about Veterans Matter, he saw an opportunity to get involved in his home state of Texas, as well as nationally.

“Dusty and his wife started the Houston Veterans Matter chapter, raising $16,000 the first day. This allowed us to house two waiting Houston veterans that very same day,” Leslie said.

Hill embarked on a radio tour of eight cities promoting Veterans Matter with an auction of ZZ Top gear. The auction raised $5,400 and one of the radio stations agreed to match that amount.

Leslie and ZZ Top have several other events planned for the future, including the “60,000 Soldiers Housed” campaign and may feature other music industry names. O

Navy Week sails to Toledo for first time

Before 2012, there hadn’t been U.S. Navy ships in the Great Lakes since 1999.

That streak was broken when the USS De Wert and USS Hurricane sailed to the area for Navy Week.

Also visiting were the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay, the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Ville de Québec and the historic U.S. Brig Niagara, a replica of the War of 1812 flagship. The ships arrived Aug. 23 and stayed four days.

The weeklong event, starting Aug. 20, went hand-in-hand with the bicentennial of the War of 1812, an “over-

arching theme of most Navy events” this year, said Navy Week Program Manager Lt. Cmdr. Pamela Bou in an email.

Toledo was one of nine cities that celebrated the bicentennial; the others were New Orleans, Baltimore, Boston, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Buffalo, N.Y. It was the first time Navy Week paid a visit to Toledo. Out of the 15 cities, it was the only new location, Bou said.

The week included free ship tours, musical performances and more.

Sailors helped local community groups including Cherry Street Mission, Toledo Ability Center, Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity, St. Paul’s Community Center, Ronald McDonald House and the Special Olympics. They also discussed the importance of science, technology, engineering and math at Imagination Station and paid visits to patients at ProMedica Toledo Chil-

dren’s Hospital and Mercy St. Vincent Children’s Hospital.

Navy Week is a time for sailors to show Americans what they do, Bou said. The Toledo event drew in 21,000 people, she said.

“Because the Navy is forward deployed around the world, Americans rarely see how important it is to have a strong, flexible Navy,” Bou said. “The Navy is extremely relevant to national security and pro-

tecting the American way of life.”

A return engagement is already in the works, with a senior Navy leader planning to visit Toledo in 2013 as part of the Navy’s 50/50 Program, Bou said. O

It was a tumultuous year for the local media landscape in Toledo.

Changes started in January when longtime WUPW-TV Channel 36 anchor Laura Emerson left FOX Toledo for a larger news outlet in Paducah, Ky. Emerson had been with the station for 16 years, helping build it from the beginning as its first primary news anchor.

“I’m proud of the product we put on at FOX Toledo, but my previous two TV stations had morning, noon, multiple night newscasts.

And it is helpful to have more coverage throughout the day, and I’m kind of excited to get back to that sort of a newsroom,” Emerson told

Shortly after Emerson left, FOX Toledo announced it would enter a shared services agreement with WTOL-11.

The resulting merged newsroom, operating under the tagline Toledo News Now, debuted in April.

The announcement triggered a host of staffing changes, most notably FOX Toledo news anchor/executive producer Shaun Hegarty’s move to WTVG-TV on Channel 13, where he took a job as investigative reporter.

Hegarty said his transition has been smooth and his new job rewarding.

“In January, February, March, we were competitors,” Hegarty said. “I came over in April, but I was welcomed here right away and everyone seemed glad to have me on board, which made

In November, controversial talkradio host, program director and news director Brian Wilson abruptly parted ways with 1370 WSPD followed shortly by station general manager Andy Stuart.

Wilson declined to discuss the separation or his future plans, citing terms of the separation.

Morning radio host Andrew Zepeda had perhaps the most turbulent year of all.

In March, despite ongoing legal issues stemming from a 2010 break-in Zepeda orchestrated at his former business, Cumulus Media promoted his morning show from tiny 100.7 The Vibe to a larger signal at Star 105.

In June, the station awarded the show a multiyear contract through December 2015.

But in OcWood tober, County judge ZEPEDA Alan Mayberry ruled that Zepeda had violated the terms of his two-year intervention in lieu of conviction period by participating in a celebrity boxing match fundraiser at which alcohol was present. The violation terminated his intervention program, resulting in three felony convictions — theft, complicity to breaking and entering, and failure to remit sales tax — on charges related to the 2010 break-in.

Zepeda was sentenced Dec. 20 to 30 days in jail starting Jan. 21 and five years community control, including no bars or alcohol.

On Dec. 26, Zepeda was abruptly fired by Cumulus along with his team, including wife Michelle Zepeda. Cumulus Toledo General Manager Matt Spaulding declined to comment on the termination, but said Cumulus has not yet decided on a replacement show. Zepeda also declined comment.

Lawsuit

Toledo’s print media outlets are not immune to turbulence.

The Blade and Toledo Free Press continue to work through an October 2011 lawsuit filed by Block Communications Inc. on behalf of The Blade alleging Toledo Free Press publisher Thomas F. Pounds breached the separation agreement he entered into after he resigned in 2004 as general manager of The Blade.
