A warm welcome to the first arts and events guide of 2019 The new year kicks off at the Tolbooth and Albert Halls with another varied programme of fantastic live entertainment and a host of workshops and classes to get stuck into.

At the Albert Halls there’s traditional festivities to start things off, with the world class performance of A Viennese Gala

by The European Orchestral Ensemble; and later an evening with Dan Snow aka ‘The History Guy’, as we hear memorable anecdotes and tales from his highly successful career as a historian and broadcaster. We’ll be joined by rock superstardom, in the form of legendary Status Quo lead singer Francis Rossi, as he shares the extraordinary secrets of his 50-plus years in rock’n’roll; and something for the little ones (and not so little ones!) as The Sooty Show rolls into town.

At the Tolbooth, phenomenal and hotly-tipped jazz group STRATA, fronted by virtuoso drummer Graham Costello, returns to the Tolbooth with their sublime, groovy minimalist/ jazz fusion. Mind-reading double act DNA, made famous through their appearances on Britain’s Got Talent, are out to shock and amaze with their impossible telepathic stage show.

Whilst for the trad music fans we’re welcoming back Ross Ainsley & Ali Hutton of Treacherous Orchestra/Salsa Celtica/ Shooglenifty/Capercaillie acclaim, as the award-winning duo tour new album ‘Symbiosis II’.

After much anticipation and encouragement from fellow musicians and fans alike, two of Scotland’s foremost musicians joined forces in 2016 to form one of the most formidable duos in recent Scottish music history. Following on from the success of their debut album ‘Symbiosis’, Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton released their second album ‘Symbiosis II’ in spring 2018 to huge critical acclaim. Winners of the best duo category at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017 and nominees for the same award in 2018, Ross and Ali have been working hard on creating a repertoire full of new and original material.

Folk music’s legendary triumvirate of musical magpies Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle and John McCusker are out on the road again in 2018. As winter turns to spring Mike, John & John will wrap up their stint on Transatlantic Sessions for another year and bring you their own blend of top class folk songs, tunes and charming bonhomie.

With their recently released album, ‘The Wishing Tree’ this will be an evening to remember. Described as the masters of flute, fiddle, song and guitar they have worked with the biggest and brightest and bring you a night of beautifully crafted music. Having shared stages and recording studios with everyone from Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler to Paul Weller, Joan Baez and Linda Thompson Mike, John & John are a rare musical treat you’ll savour for a very long time.

Strange Behaviours: GASP + Jackal Trades

Sat 9 Mar, Doors 7.30pm £6 adv/£8 on the door £5 with young scot card. Ages 18+ Enigmatic, prolific and influential, GASP is arguably one of underground hip-hop’s most revered emcees. Via a steady slew of videos, he portrays a character bordering on unhinged, lunacy, aggression, a sense of horror either stuffed down your throat where you stand, or else lurking never too far away. In his lyrics however you see the humour and the innate ability to sum up common experience in neat verse that has kept him at the top of the scene’s foodchain for years now. Joining him on the night is cult producer Physiks, a regular collaborator and part of what has kept GASP’s output of the highest quality in production and musicality.

In support is emerging emcee and Scottish Alternative Music Award-nominated artist Jackal Trades. A writer whose distinctive rasp and work with a range of esteemed producers has seen his reputation build, through two selfreleased albums chocked full of social observation, political backlash and sarcastic one-liners.

Phil Differ: Billy Bremner And Me Sat 16 Mar, 8pm £12.50

A schoolboy’s dream. Once again we welcome the annual Distil performance, featuring compositions by some of Scotland’s leading traditional composers including this year for the first time two bands Heisk and Tannara, and performed with unique flair and expertise by the ensemble Mr McFall’s Chamber.

Distil is run by Hands up for Trad, who also organise the annual Scottish Trad Music Awards.

A lost bear finds himself in a world that is full of Lost things, lost toys, lost hats, lost socks and lost umbrellas. When Lost Bear travels to try and find his way home, his journey takes him through lost worlds, the seaside, the jungle and a trip to the Moon. Along the way he meets other lost toys, Scary Shark, Mischievous Monkey and the Revolving Robot, until he finds himself facing the most unusual foe of all – Steggyasaurus...!

City Music Live - Monthly under-18s live music nights

A gentle tale for little ones – short adventures without too long a story to follow. Brought to you by one of Scotland’s leading puppetry companies, the same team that presented Gingerbread Man, this is a show created with an infectious sense of fun and adventure for all those, large and small, who still love their toys (Especially the grown-ups!).

Foxes and Crows: ‘Chaussette’ Puppet Workshop Mon 8 Apr, 2–4pm £7.50 ages 7-9

Le Petit Monde brings you a new puppet-making workshop based on the famous Aesop fable The Fox & The Crow!

Turned into a poem by the super famous French poet Jean de La Fontaine in the 17th century, the fable is equally popular in Scotland and it is in France. After a short introduction to the story, participants will make their own puppets out of old socks and then get to manipulate them.

We will also have fun practising a few key French phrases from Tania’s own bilingual version of the fable and re-enact the story together. Printed copies of the text will be handed out to take home.

This workshop is accessible to non-French speakers. All you need to bring is a sock (stripy ones are great!) and your imagination...

Thu 18 Apr, 8pm £13/£11 Daoirí is one of the most important traditional singers to emerge in the last decade’ Dónal Lunny Singer and bouzouki player Daoirí (pronounced ‘Derry’) Farrell is described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. Six months after releasing the album ‘True Born Irishman’ Daoirí won two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017 for Best Newcomer, and Best Traditional Track and performed live at the awards ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Since then he has toured twice to the UK, and played at festivals in Australia, Canada, the UK, Belgium, Denmark and more. In February 2018 he toured with the all-star Transatlantic Sessions in major venues across the UK. The follow-up to ‘True Born Irishman’ is due out in autumn 2018.

One of Shetland’s finest and most accomplished modernday fiddlers, Jenna Reid is joined by long-time accompanist Harris Playfair, and the genre-defying string ensemble Mr McFall’s Chamber in a sumptuous double-bill of musical mastery.

Released in early 2019, Working Hands is Reid’s fourth studio album, featuring predominantly original compositions, inspired by lessons she took with Robert McFall, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s second violinist and leader of the revered ensemble bearing his name. Such was the connection and influence, many of the featured compositions are dedicated to the quartet and individual musicians - who not only went on to feature on the album, but now join her on tour for select spring dates. Jenna will also be reunited with one of Scotland’s most highly regarded traditional pianists, Harris Playfair - an electric pairing, brilliantly captured on her five-star Live in Shetland record offering a selection of traditional material, ahead of joining the McFall’s ensemble.

Dan Snow An Evening with the History Guy Fri 1 Mar, 7.30pm £25

An Evening with DAN SNOW will feature the well-known historian and TV presenter recount anecdotes of memorable experiences from his very successful career as a historian and broadcaster. Otherwise known as ‘The History Guy’ Dan will also research and include historical facts and stories relating to the specific area/ town of each theatre on the tour and will be aided by the use of digital screens. The show will be an undoubted success with academics, students, families and all those interested in the history of STIRLING and the surrounding area.The show will conclude with a 20 mins Q&A.

Neil McIntyre Wildlife Talk Fri 8 Mar, 7pm £12

Neil McIntyre is a self-taught wildlife photographer, based at Aviemore in the Cairngorms. Son of a Perthshire gamekeeper, he was brought up with immediate access to the wild outdoors - an ideal environment where he could study the Scottish wildlife such as red deer and grouse, some of which would become his chosen photography subjects in later life. Neil has had photographs printed in various wildlife magazines and televised shorts included in the Plant Earth series. However, some beautiful close-up photos are published in the book The Red Squirrel, with the text written by Polly Pullar, which will be on sale on the night. The talk is being held to raise funds for SPANA - The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad - a British based charity raising funds to treat working animals around the world.

Hit The Road The Scottish Music Centre’s youth music touring project returned to Stirling in December, with local singer-songwriter Joseph Hewer being selected to take part in their tour across the country.

Joining up with Riley and Kier Gibson, the acts played Stirling, Fort William and Glasgow, gaining some great insight into life as a touring musician and learning loads on the road from the project’s mentors. Great work Joseph!

Tolbooth Trad has been happening for 13 years and the wonderful Lori Watson has led the workshops from the very start.

There isn’t enough space to be able to say all the wonderful things we would like to say about Lori. She is an exceptional tutor, going above and beyond continuously.

Lori has an incredible ability to work with the youngest beginner up to the most advanced players. Young musicians that started as complete beginners 13 years ago are working with us now as assistant tutors under Lori’s mentorship.

Lori left the workshops in December to take up a full time post as Lecturer in Scottish Ethnology at the University of Edinburgh.

Thank you Lori for everything, we will miss you
