EDWARD POVEY Available works
Edward Povey is a remarkable man and a truly remarkable artist. I have only known him personally for a few years but have admired his paintings for much longer. It is a pleasure and honor to represent him.
Beyond the extraordinary skill necessary to create these immaculate canvases, what truly distinguishes Povey’s paintings from those of his contemporaries is his ‘Emotional Realism’, a term he coined and an excellent description of his art. His figures are lifelike and convincing, his compositions complex with a modern style, but most importantly he paints with a true emotional intensity.
The experiences Povey endured as the child of a violent merchant seaman gave him insights that, to this day, imbue his art with a soulful potency. He allows us to share his forceful awareness of the beauty and vulnerability of life and the strength of the human spirit. I love reading Povey’s poetic explorations of each work and its interwoven symbols.
I have never known an artist articulate so well the meaning and inspiration behind his works. As a gallery owner, I have put on more than 100 exhibitions; no contemporary show has been as significant as ‘Human’ (New York, October-November 2023).
