We regret to inform you that the 21st Tokomairiro High School Lake to Sea Trail Ride, scheduled for 19th October, has been cancelled.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

With the NCEA exams just around the corner, it’s important to remember that the support teens receive at home plays a huge role in how well they prepare and cope with the challenges ahead. While studying can be a stressful time for many students, there are practical steps parents and caregivers can take to help their teens navigate this period with confidence and resilience.

1. Create a Structured Study Environment

One of the most effective ways to support your teen is by ensuring they have a quiet, comfortable, and well-lit space dedicated to studying. Encouraging them to organise their study materials and create a timetable will help them stay on top of their workload. Breaking their subjects into manageable chunks and setting small, achievable goals for each study session can make studying feel less overwhelming.

2. Encourage Healthy Study Habits

While studying is important, it’s equally important for teens to take regular breaks and avoid overworking. Short breaks every 30 to 50 minutes can help improve focus and information retention. You can also promote active learning techniques, such as summarising notes, using flashcards, or practicing past exam papers, which are proven to be more effective than passive reading.

3. Support Their Well-being

Exam stress is a common challenge during this period, and as parents, you can help by offering emotional support. Encourage your teen to talk about any concerns they may have, and remind them that feeling anxious is natural. Promote relaxation techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or even a short walk to help them manage stress. Also, make sure they are eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.

management. Assist your teen in creating a study schedule that balances schoolwork with time for relaxation, hobbies, and family. Avoid the last-minute cramming by encouraging consistent, daily study sessions well in advance of the exams. Remind them that a good balance between work and rest will help keep them motivated and focused.

5. Stay Positive and Focus on Effort

It’s important to emphasise the effort they are putting into their studies rather than focusing solely on results. Praise their hard work and progress, no matter how small. This helps reduce pressure and builds confidence.

Remind them that exams are only one part of their learning journey and not the sole measure of their success. By fostering a positive, balanced approach to studying and well-being, parents and caregivers can play a pivotal role in helping their teens manage this critical time with resilience and confidence. Together, we can ensure our students are not only prepared for their exams but are also supported every step of the way.

Sleep Survey

Researchers from Otago University are currently working on a Cure Kids-funded project that aims to understand the benefits and challenges of later school start times for Year 12 and 13 students. They have designed surveys on the topic for students aged 16+ as well as parents which are available via the blog https://blogs.otago.ac.nz/teensleep/ .

All surveys seek opinions about later school start times for senior high school students in Aotearoa New Zealand. The teen survey also asks about their sleep and wellbeing. On completion teens can choose to enter the draw for one of ten $250 JB Hi-Fi or The Warehouse gift vouchers. Other survey respondents can choose to enter the draw for one of fifteen $100 Prezzy vouchers.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Update

The PB4L team at Tokomairiro High School has launched the Toko Star of the Month programme, celebrating tauira (students) who consistently embody our school values of Whakaute / Respect, Haepapa / Responsibility, and Hiranga / Excellence.

Each month, Heads of Department select an outstanding student from their area who has exemplified these values. The chosen student's ingoa (name) and whakaahua (photo) are proudly displayed in the school’s entryway.

Choosing just one tauira per department is no easy task, as so many are actively demonstrating our core values with such great regularity. In fact, during Mahuru (September) alone, students were acknowledged nearly 600 times for living these values a true testament to the positive culture we are building together at our kura (school)!

Waihola/ Carendon Women’s Institute

Our September meeting began with the committee meeting in the Wailhola Hall, to organise the Coffee Morning to be held in the Waihola Hall October 21st 2024 The speaker is DR Charlotte King who will be talking about the lives of Early Colonial Women living in Otago.

Members then travelled to the Dunedin Public Gardens where two more members joined us. We toured the lower garden by a small train and trailer where we had the history of the bigger trees explained to us.

Next we went to the Food Room in Green Island for our lunch. Once we were seated two men joined us. They had flown down from the North Island to join with us to help celebrate their Mother`s 80th birthday. A lovely surprise and a lovely day out, especially as the weather had gone from a misty morning to a clear sunny day by the time we arrived in Dunedin.

The speaker at the September meeting was local Mick Cullen. His grandfather emigrated from Scotland to Milton and established the first school on Back Road which was then the main thoroughfare.

Mick was born at Glenore and grew up with a love of bagpipes. He left school at 15 to start an apprenticeship as a turner. He moved to Auckland where his eyes were opened as to how others in NZ lived. Then he had shifts to Kaiapoi, Mosgiel and back to Auckland.

There he worked for a German on modern European machinery making envelopes with a different technique to other manufacturers. While working there he started his overseas trips. When machines were 10 years old, they were sold, often to overseas buyers. This entailed instalment as well, hence the need for Mick to do the job. His visits included to France, Germany, UK and USA.

He saw an advert for a lake front place in Waihola and moved to where he now lives. He joined Waihola Looking Forward and is impressed with all they have achieved. Mick was thanked by Stu Michelle and given a gift.

The October meeting is on Tuesday the 15th at the RSA hall at 10 am. The speaker is Joyce Beck from Kaitangata. She leads a busy life with involvement in her community and we look forward to her visit.

Committee please meet at 9.30 am.

Well it's certainly been an eventful seven days with The Big Wet featuring predominantly in everyone's existence. In fact it seems to have awoken romance with one member who got stranded coming home from Dunedin after purchasing jewellery for his beloved wife. Plenty of other examples of community spirit coming to the fire and I know the Fire Brigade had a busy time of it. On behalf of wider community, thanks team for your efforts.

Our NPC Tipping Comp is getting to the squeaky bum time with the added stress of having to pick the Heartland Semi Finals as well. Matches are on our Facebook page or at the RSA. Prize giving will be first Friday in November so lock that date in.

Our joker draw has now hit $2000 so the card will be drawn each Thurs night so you need to be there in order to be eligible. Speaking of membership draw the author of this highly ridiculed column had his number drawn out twice in five weeks, but unfortunately wasn't there either time to claim the prize, so that should be a lesson to all.

Perhaps this column should be re-named Last Of The Summer Wine with the antics of Clegg Compo (who's harem is allegedly getting younger) gaining prominence. Now we can add in 2 more characters with Foggy and Nora Batty giving me plenty of material. I witnessed Nora Batty offered cash and claiming all types of mischievous activities which made me blush.

Finally wish Tanya Manson happy birthday on Friday as she will be shouting refreshments.

That's all for this week, I need a lie down.
