Level 1 Te Reo Māori

This term, we are focused on developing oral language skills using the rich learning resource Papa Whakakōrero. This resource places strong emphasis on spoken conversation and practical language use. Students are learning to construct and use transitive verbal sentence structures as they build confidence in communicating in Te Reo Māori.

For example, they are learning how to say:

Kei te aha koe?" – What are you doing?

Kei te oma au. – I am running.

Kei te ahatia ngā tamariki? What are the children doing? They are swimming

This structure helps students understand how to identify the subject, verb, and object in a sentence a key skill in building fluency.

Student Attendance

Every day counts towards your child’ learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.

Parents and caregiver expectations

Parents are legally required to enrol their children and make sure they attend school every day.

Parents play a big role in helping their children do well in school. You can do this by making sure your child goes to school every day and letting the school know if they're sick. If your child is unable to attend school you must let the school know the reason why.

Family holidays or taking time off for recreational activities are not acceptable reasons for being absent.

You are responsible for letting the school know if your children are moving schools and you need to make sure you enrol your children in their next school right away.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

As we settle into the second week of Term Two, Tokomairiro High School is buzzing with activity and opportunities for our students.

Winter sports have started strongly, with two great wins in hockey this week a fantastic way to open the season. Excitement is also growing for the upcoming Tokyo trip, as students received their Disneyland tickets and trip hoodies. The countdown is

At our assembly on Monday, we reflected on the idea of hiringa, personal excellence one of our core school values. Personal excellence is about taking on challenges, giving your best and growing step by step a spirit that we see in action across our school every day.

3 Steps for Life We are proud to be partnering with Hato Hone, St John to offer the 3 Steps for Life CPR and AED training programme to our students.

The first session last week was outstanding, with fifteen students learning valuable, potentially life-saving skills. We are very proud of their commitment to building important capabilities that may one day save a life.

Exploring Creativity Art Trips Last week, our art students had the opportunity to broaden their creative horizons through two art trips. These excursions provided valuable inspiration and learning experiences outside the classroom, as students explored new ideas, techniques, and environments to fuel their artistic development. We are proud of how they represented Tokomairiro and embraced these opportunities with enthusiasm.

Common Assessment Activities At the end of May, we enter the first NCEA Common Assessment Activities (CAA) window for 2025. Students who have been entered for the CAAs will already know their assessment dates. These are two online assessments one in literacy and one in numeracy sat under exam conditions at school. Passing a CAA awards 10 corequisite credits towards NCEA. Students do not need to achieve both literacy and numeracy at the same time they can build their success step by step. Teachers are preparing students in class, but extra preparation at home will give them the best chance of success. Every bit of practice helps.

Fortnightly Reports Our first fortnightly reports for Term Two will be sent out at the end of this week. If any caregivers do not receive a report, we encourage you to first check your spam folder. If the report is still missing, please contact the school office to ensure we have the correct email address. If you notice any attendance errors, please reach out to your child’s House Group Teacher.
