Pink Shirt Day

Tokomairiro High School once again acknowledged Pink Shirt Day on Friday 23rd May. Students were encouraged to wear pink-themed clothing and bring a gold coin donation. All funds raised went to the Mental Health Foundation, supporting their important work in promoting kindness, inclusion, and mental wellbeing. Students supported the day not only by making their donations and dressing in pink, but by creating supportive messages in chalk on the pavement.

Leadership Day for Young Students

Earlier in the term, ten Year 7 & 8 students attended NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) in Dunedin. They listened to a variety of different speakers that shared their incredible stories. Some very thought provoking messages were shared throughout the day! This year's theme for NYLD was 'Stronger together'. When we work together as a team and

Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini My strength is not due to me alone, but due to the strength of many.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the term! The weeks are flying by and our students continue to throw themselves into all aspects of school life from learning in the classroom to sports, cultural activities and leadership opportunities

3 Steps for Life

Last week marked the fourth and final session of the 3 Steps for Life course, delivered by Hato Hone St John. Almost half of our Year 9–13 students have now received hands-on training in CPR and how to use a defibrillator skills that could one day save a life.

We’re proud of the way our students engaged with this opportunity. It’s part of our broader commitment to equipping them not only with academic knowledge, but with real-world capabilities too. We’ll be repeating the course later this year so that more of our students especially our younger ākonga have the chance to build confidence in these vital skills.

Rippa Rugby Success

Two teams of our Year 7 and 8 students competed in a local Rippa Rugby tournament last week and they were phenomenal. Both teams played with enthusiasm, discipline, and true Tokomairiro spirit.

The non-competitive team went undefeated, and the competitive team won the tournament outright. They at Forsyth Barr Stadium a very exciting next step!

Thank you to Mrs Milligan and Mrs Mallon for preparing our students so well and supporting them throughout the day. Their dedication makes opportunities like this possible.

Common Assessment Activities

Last week was the first of two national opportunities in 2025 for students to sit the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs). These assessments are now a key part of the new NCEA structure.

All students who were entered gave their best and took the process seriously we were particularly proud of their positive attitude and the quiet focus during testing. Results from this round will be released at the end of June reading early July for numeracy and writing.

Curiosity Through Science

This term at Milton Kindergarten we have been focusing on feeding mokopuna curiosity (whakamatatemate) through science (pūtaiao). Mokopuna have been engaging and investigating in longterm and short- term projects, mixing colours through the fun of potion making while also exploring bugs, erupting volcanoes and finding out what will happen as they test out their working theories. “How does it work?”, “What will happen?” and “How do I?”. This has been a fun way for mokopuna to share their ideas in their own time and extend their ongoing scientific knowledge and understanding. To follow what we get up to at Milton Kindergarten, follow us on Facebook, just search Milton Kindergarten.

Rippa Rugby Tournament

On Tuesday, 20 May, two teams of Year 7/8 students participated in the annual Rippa Rugby Festival in Balclutha run by Sport Clutha with a record 102 teams entered. The two teams competed against other schools from the South West district. One team competed in the social grade and the other in the competitive grade. The social team won all of their games and the competitive team also won all their round robin games. They progressed to the finals and after some tight quarter and semi finals, they ended up in the final against Lawrence Area School. After another tight game that could have gone either way, Toko Gold took the win in the Year 7 & 8 tournament. It was a great competition that the students enjoyed. thanks to the parents who came along and supported our teams.

What is Tūturu?

Tūturu has been working alongside your school for a while now.

Tūturu is a uniquely Aotearoa approach that brings schools and health services together, so that students can learn, be well, and be prepared for a modern world.

Tūturu was created to help schools and health services better support all students to learn and be well.

By fostering critical thinking skills and offering support during difficult times, we strengthen young people’s ability to navigate life’s challenges.

Tūturu works in four main areas:

• Enhancing school climate (such as BOT training and policy).

• Facilitating pastoral care for rangatahi at school.

• Professional learning and development for school staff.

• Production of curriculum resources for students in years 9–13.

A Tūturu approach strengthens school ecosystems and enhances the experiences and overall wellbeing of students.

Why does Tūturu exist?

Tūturu was created to help schools and health services better support all students to learn and be well.

Combining the expertise of the education and health sectors, Tūturu helps rangatahi and the wider school community to explore complex issues. Initially, our focus was on alcohol and other drugs (AOD), aiming to help schools move away from reactive methods to proactive approaches that prepare students for the challenges of modern life. Now, we’ve broadened our focus to encompass other aspects of young people’s health such as implementing student-led action. By fostering critical thinking skills and offering support during difficult times, we strengthen young people’s ability to navigate life’s challenges.

This video explains the mahi that Tūturu does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXfv0kPzFe0

Toko Rugby Report

On Saturday Toko Premiers travelled to Lawrence in a match where they needed to gain maximum points in order to maintain their standing as Top 2 candidate.

Toko opened the scoring positively through tries to Teimana Rewita and Billy Greer to take a dominant lead 14-0 part way through the first half. Lawrence responded before Damon Clement scored just before halftime which gave Toko a handy 22-12 lead.

Toko scored early in the second half through Dylan Greer to take what appeared to be a commanding 28 -2 lead. Lawrence responded immediately for the majority of the second half and were only behind by one point when they were awarded a handy penalty which touch judge put his flag up while second touch judge didn't!!! Thankfully the kick missed and Toko squeaked out with a 31-27 victory.

For Toko, Kaleb Hayes and Keegan Ferguson had strong games along with Damon Clement and McLeod Glaister. No Premier Games this week due to Topp Cup. Good luck to Toko players Jared Hayes and Keegan Ferguson on selection. Next game Toko travel to Heriot for a massive game in a fortnight. -The Judge

News from the Trenches...

Another power packed week has concluded with plenty of action going on at the moment.

On Sunday we had our annual Clay Bird shoot vs Milton Fire Brigade. This competition is for a fantastic trophy and both organizations are keen on securing the prize. And the winner was Milton RSA, only just keeping the trophy at home. The contest is based on average points scored by each team shooters. Final score was 21 RSA and 20.77 Fire Brigade so was extremely close overall. This was a highly enjoyable occasion hosted by the Fire Brigade.

Not sure about exact shooters but Fire Brigade has roughly 23 shooters to RSA approx 10 so that's why based on average. RSA had lost one of their prime shooters when they had the misfortune of tripping over their dogs thus causing an injury. I can be assured that the RSA Welfare Officer has checked on their well being!!!

From what I understand Fire Brigade is looking for retribution via a games night in a months time. There was a rumour going around the RSA had planted someone to help the Fire brigade team but investigation still being undertaken.

Next week I've got some awesome announcements about what's occuring over the next couple of months. You will not want to miss this column!!!!

Thank You!

On Friday, 4th April, the St Mary’s school community came together for our first ever Walkathon, bringing together the entire school in a fun-filled afternoon to raise funds for much-needed musical instruments and a new school gazebo. The event was a great success, filled with colour, laughter, and an incredible sense of school spirit. Thanks to our school families and local community, the fundraiser was not only enjoyable but also highly successful in reaching its goals and more.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our major sponsors, Fergusons Transport, Marshall Electrical and Team Phantom for their huge generosity. We would also like to thank local businesses, The Warehouse Balclutha, Leap Dunedin, Riviera Cinemas, Milton Dollar Store and Artist Alice Muiral for donating prizes. Your support made a big difference and helped inspire the kids to give their best effort.

Events like the Walkathon show what can be achieved when our small school community pulls together. We’re so proud of our students and grateful for everyone who contributed to making the day such a success!

Thanks again to everyone involved, St Mary’s Home and School Committee
